Inversion for emphasis means changing normal subject-before-verb order to auxiliary-before-subject order. It is mainly used after negative or limiting expressions placed at the front of a clause: Never have I seen this before. Rarely do we get this chance. The meaning is usually the same as normal order, but the style is stronger, more dramatic, and often more formal. In everyday speech, people usually say I have never seen this before. In writing, speeches, reports, and careful storytelling, inversion can make the limit or contrast stand out.

Think of the first phrase as a spotlight. When a negative or limiting expression moves to the front, it pulls the auxiliary forward too. Normal order is subject + auxiliary: I have never seen it. If there is no auxiliary in the normal sentence, English adds do, does, or did: We rarely get a second chance becomes Rarely do we get a second chance. The inversion happens in the clause affected by the fronted expression, not automatically in every clause after it.
