Introduction

Two jobs verbs can do

English verbs can describe either an action or a state. An action is something that happens, moves, starts, stops, or changes. A state is a condition, feeling, possession, opinion, relationship, or sense that simply exists. This difference matters because continuous forms usually show actions in progress, while simple forms often carry states. She is fixing the printer shows an action happening now. She owns the printer shows a state, not an activity.

Core logic

Meaning first, form second

First decide what meaning the verb has in this sentence. If the meaning is a fact, feeling, possession, opinion, need, or mental state, prefer simple forms. I need a break. Do you believe him? She doesn’t like coffee. If the meaning is an activity around the time you are speaking or around another time, use a continuous form. Right now, I’m taking a break. Continuous does not simply mean present; it means an action is in progress, temporary, repeated around now, or developing.

Cognitive metaphor

A photo or a video

Think of state verbs as a photo and action verbs as a video. A photo can be true at this moment without showing movement; a video shows something unfolding. The room smells clean reports a result your senses notice, like a photo. The dog is smelling my bag shows an active process, like a video. This metaphor is useful, but meaning comes first. Some verbs can be either photo or video depending on how the speaker views the situation.

Core pattern

States and actions in perfect forms

Perfect forms follow the same logic. Use present perfect simple for states that continue from the past to now. I’ve known Sam for years. We’ve owned this flat since 2018. Use present perfect continuous for actions that have been happening over a period and may still be unfinished, repeated, or recently visible. I’ve been waiting for Sam for an hour. They’ve been repairing the flat since May. With state meanings, perfect simple normally sounds natural; perfect continuous often sounds as if you are wrongly turning a condition into an activity.

Contrast

Same verb, different meaning

The closest common confusion is between a state meaning and an action meaning of the same verb. Do not memorize only the verb; check the meaning. Think can mean believe, a state, or consider, an action. I think you’re right. I’m thinking about changing jobs. Have can mean possess, a state, or experience or do, an action. He has a small office. He’s having a meeting. The continuous is natural when the subject is actively doing something, not when the verb only names possession, belief, or a stable relation.

Usage rules

Common state meanings and boundaries

Common state meanings include knowing, understanding, believing, wanting, needing, liking, loving, preferring, remembering, owning, belonging, costing, seeming, and depending. Sense verbs such as see, hear, smell, taste, feel, and look need extra care: they are stative when they report a perception, but action-like when someone deliberately tests, checks, or experiences something. The verb be is usually stative for identity or permanent description, but continuous be can show temporary behavior, as in being careful or being difficult. Informal speech and advertising sometimes use continuous with feelings for emphasis; treat that as marked style, not the neutral grammar.
Danger zone

Do not use continuous just because it is now

A common error is adding continuous because the situation is true now. Mistake: I’m knowing the answer. Corrected: I know the answer. Another common error is using continuous questions with mental-state verbs. Mistake: Are you understanding me? Corrected: Do you understand me? Use continuous only when the meaning is an activity: thinking about a plan, having lunch, tasting food, or looking for keys. If you mean possession, knowledge, preference, belief, or understanding, choose a simple form.

I’m knowing the answer.

Summary

The practical test

Use this quick test. First, ask whether the verb shows an event you could watch unfold. If yes, a continuous form may be natural. Second, ask whether the verb describes a condition, relationship, feeling, opinion, possession, or sense result. If yes, a simple form is usually better. Third, if the time period starts in the past and continues now, choose perfect simple for continuing states and perfect continuous for continuing actions. Finally, remember that meaning can change, so test the sentence, not just the dictionary verb.
