First decide the meaning: old past = used to/would; familiarity = be/get used to, with a thing or -ing after to.

Introduction

Four forms, four meanings

English uses four similar-looking forms for different ideas. Use used to + verb for a past habit or past state that is no longer true, as in 'I used to live near the station.' Use would + verb for repeated past actions inside a past story, as in 'I would walk there every morning.' Use be used to + noun or -ing for something that feels normal now, as in 'I'm used to the noise now.' Use get used to + noun or -ing for the process of becoming comfortable, as in 'I'm getting used to the new timetable.'

Think of the lesson as two different maps, not one. The first map is time: used to and would point backward to repeated life before. Used to is like an old label on your life; it often suggests the label has changed. Would is like a film clip that replays inside a past scene. The second map is comfort: be used to means you are already inside the comfort zone; get used to means you are moving into it. Familiarity: be used to and get used to

Use be used to + noun, pronoun, or -ing when something is familiar, acceptable, or not surprising. The verb be shows the time: am, is, are, was, will be. 'She's used to working nights.' Questions and negatives use the form of be: 'Are you used to driving on the left?' Use get used to + noun, pronoun, or -ing for the change toward familiarity. It often appears with still, slowly, finally, or not yet. 'I'm getting used to my new glasses.' 'It took me weeks to get used to waking up early.' The -ing form is required after this to when the next idea is an action.

In 'I used to work late,' used to is a past-habit marker. The main verb is work, in base form, and the whole sentence means that working late belonged to a past period. In 'I am used to working late,' am is the main time carrier, used is an adjective-like word meaning familiar, and to is a preposition, so working is a gerund. The difference after to is the easiest visual test: used to do points to old past behavior; be used to doing points to comfort or experience with an activity.

Used to is broader than would. It can introduce repeated actions and long past states: 'I used to know everyone here.' Would normally describes repeated actions, not states such as know, believe, own, or live. It works best when a past time scene is already open: 'Every summer, my grandfather would fix bicycles in the yard.' If the sentence mainly tells the listener that life was different then, choose used to. If it paints repeated actions inside that old life, would is possible. The forms can combine naturally: 'I used to get nervous before meetings, but now I'm used to speaking in public.'

The most common error is mixing the past-habit pattern with the familiarity pattern. 'I am used to work late' is not correct for familiarity because after be used to, an action must be -ing: 'I am used to working late.' If you mean an old job habit that is not true now, remove be and use the base verb after used to. After did, write use to, not used to: the d in did already marks past. Also notice a separate passive pattern: 'This key is used to open the back door.' Here is used means is utilized, and to open gives purpose; it does not mean the key is familiar with opening.

Form variations

Tense, spelling, and form choices

Used to for past habit has no normal present form. For present habits, choose usually, often, tend to, or be in the habit of. Would for past habits is the same written form as conditional would, so context matters. Be used to can be present, past, or future because be changes. Get used to can also change tense: getting used to, got used to, will get used to. In speech, used to and use to may sound very similar, so spelling follows the grammar: used to in affirmative past habit, use to after did.
