Think of the subject as the receiver of an event. The get passive usually feels dynamic: something changes, happens, or is done to someone or something. The basic pattern

The core pattern is subject + get + past participle. Put the tense on get: “People often get hurt when they rush,” “The window got broken during the storm,” and “You might get asked for ID.” After a modal, use the base form get: might get, could get, may get, will get. For questions and negatives, use normal English auxiliaries around get: “Did your bag get checked?” and “We didn’t get paid.” The participle stays the same: checked, paid, selected, invited, broken, stolen.

In “Our flight got cancelled because of the weather,” the sentence has three useful parts. “Our flight” is the receiver, “got cancelled” is the get passive, and “because of the weather” gives the reason. The agent is often not mentioned because it is unknown, obvious, or unimportant. If you need it, use a by-phrase: “We got delayed by traffic.” In a question, keep get before the past participle: “Did your bag get checked at the gate?” not “Did your bag checked?”

Get passive vs be passive

The closest contrast is the be passive. Be passive is more neutral and more common in formal writing: “The meeting was cancelled by the manager.” Get passive is more conversational and event-focused: “The meeting got cancelled at the last minute.” Be can also describe a state, not an event: “The door was closed” may simply mean it was not open. Get pushes the meaning toward an event: “The door got closed before we arrived.” When you need an official, neutral, or academic tone, be passive is usually safer.

When to choose it

Choose the get passive when the event affects people directly, has a practical consequence, or sounds like everyday spoken news. It is natural in sentences such as “He got fined for parking there,” “We didn’t get paid on time,” and “How did you get selected for the team?” It is also common with accidents, punishments, invitations, promotions, delays, and checks. Use it carefully in formal reports, contracts, academic writing, and historical facts, where the be passive usually sounds more professional.

Do not forget the past participle. Say “My bike got stolen yesterday,” not “My bike got steal yesterday.” Also, do not force the get passive into every passive sentence. “The report got written by three researchers in 2020” is understandable, but it sounds too informal and too event-focused for a formal fact. “The report was written by three researchers in 2020” is better. Finally, remember that not every get + participle-like word is a true passive. “I got tired” describes a change of state, not an action done by someone.
