Hedging means softening a claim so it fits the evidence, the situation, and your relationship with the listener. Stance means showing your attitude toward the information: certainty, doubt, source, evaluation, or personal viewpoint. Compare: “This may cause delays,” “I think we should wait,” and “The evidence suggests that the plan is working.” These sentences do not avoid meaning; they manage strength. Hedging is especially important in reports, meetings, academic writing, feedback, and disagreement, because it helps you sound accurate rather than aggressive or overconfident.

Modal verbs are the most direct tools for cautious claims. In negatives, use not necessarily to stop an overstrong conclusion: “A delay does not necessarily mean the project is in trouble.” You can also hedge disagreement with partial agreement: “That may be true, but we still need more data.” Hedging is not weakness here; it keeps the conversation open.
