HOME 1: before a noun
  Start far from the noun → move closer
  opinion → size/age/shape/color → origin/material → NOUN

  a lovely little garden

  Normal: I bought a red car.
     Not: I bought a car red.

HOME 2: after a linking verb
  be / seem / taste... (= connects to a description)

  The café was quiet.
  She seems tired.

Use adjectives before nouns in the usual far-to-near order, or after linking verbs like be/seem/taste.

An adjective adds a quality to a noun: size, color, age, feeling, value, material, and more. In English it has two main homes. Before a noun, it helps build a noun phrase: We found a quiet café. After a linking verb, it describes the subject: The café was quiet. Questions and negatives keep the same adjective position: Is the room ready? The chairs are not comfortable. English adjectives usually do not change for singular/plural or masculine/feminine; the noun and the verb carry those changes.

The two main positions

Use two basic patterns. Pattern one: determiner plus adjective plus noun. The adjective sits inside the noun phrase and helps identify the thing. Pattern two: subject plus linking verb plus adjective. Common linking verbs are be, seem, look, feel, sound, smell, taste, become, and get. In She seems tired, tired describes she, not the action of seeming. Many adjectives can use both positions, but the sentence focus changes: before the noun, the adjective helps name the thing; after a linking verb, it gives news about the subject.

Natural adjective order

When several adjectives come before one noun, English usually moves from personal or general description toward physical and classifying details. A useful order is determiner or number, opinion, size, age, shape, color, origin, material, purpose, noun. You rarely need the full list; two or three adjectives are usually enough. Natural phrases include a lovely little garden, two old green French bottles, and a small round wooden table. If an order sounds strange, remove less important adjectives or split the description into another sentence.

Look inside a noun phrase: a beautiful old wooden chair. The core noun is chair. Wooden is close to the noun because it classifies the chair by material. Old tells age, and beautiful gives the speaker's opinion, so it comes earlier. This order helps the listener build the noun step by step. In real speech, do not stack too many adjectives unless each one helps the listener choose the right thing.

Usage rules

Commas and plural nouns

Use commas only between coordinate adjectives: adjectives that describe the noun separately and can usually be joined by and. A long, difficult meeting has two separate judgments about the meeting, so the comma is natural. Do not use a comma when adjectives work in a fixed order to build one idea: a small red car. Also remember that adjectives before plural nouns stay unchanged. The noun may become plural, but the adjective does not take plural -s.

The closest common confusion is adjective versus adverb. Adjectives describe nouns or subjects after linking verbs. Adverbs describe actions, adjectives, or whole sentences. Compare She is careful with She drives carefully. With sense verbs, meaning matters: The soup tastes good describes the soup; He checked the soup carefully describes how he checked it. Do not change an adjective to an adverb just because it comes after a verb; after a linking verb, an adjective is normal.

Form variations

Useful after-noun exceptions

Some adjectives and adjective-like phrases come after the word they describe. After indefinite pronouns such as something, anything, and nothing, put the adjective after the pronoun: I need something cheap. Some adjectives usually appear after a linking verb, not directly before a noun, especially asleep, afraid, alive, and alone: The baby is asleep. Short reduced descriptions can also follow the noun, especially with available, responsible, or possible: We chose the best room available.
