Use present perfect for a past event linked to now; use past simple when you point to a finished past time.

The basic choice

English often offers two correct-looking choices: present perfect or past simple. The difference is not only about when something happened; it is about what the speaker wants to connect it to. Use the present perfect when a past event matters now. Use the past simple when you place the event in a finished past time. A useful first question is: Is the present connection important, or is the finished time important? This lesson trains that choice, so you can explain results, experiences, news, and completed events naturally.

Present connection or finished time

The present perfect says: a past event has a present meaning. The exact time is not the main point. It often reports news, results, experience, or progress up to now. The past simple puts an event in a finished part of the past. If the sentence answers ‘When exactly?’, use the past simple. If it answers ‘What is true now because of it?’, use the present perfect. The same real event can often be described with either tense, but the meaning changes because the speaker’s focus changes.

Forms you need

Present perfect form is have or has + past participle. In everyday speech, contractions are common: I’ve, you’ve, we’ve, they’ve, he’s, she’s. Questions move have or has before the subject. Negatives add not after have or has. Past simple statements use the past verb form, but questions and negatives use did + base verb. Do not use did with a present perfect form, and do not add a past ending after did. Remember that he’s or she’s can mean he has or she has before a past participle.

Cognitive metaphor

Bridge or timeline pin

Think of the present perfect as a bridge from the past to now. One end is in the past; the other end touches the present. The past simple is a pin on a past timeline. It places the action in a completed past area. The event may be the same, but the speaker chooses the angle: present result or past event. This metaphor is useful because English tense choice is often about viewpoint. Bridge: why it matters now. Timeline pin: where it happened in the past.

Usage rules

Time words that guide the tense

Time expressions often guide the tense. Use the present perfect with up-to-now words such as ever, never, already, yet, just, so far, and recently when the connection to now is important. Also use it with unfinished periods such as today or this week when the period still includes now. Use the past simple with finished-time expressions such as yesterday, last night, in 2020, two days ago, and when. Be careful with today and this week: they can be unfinished or finished depending on the speaker’s viewpoint.

For and since: still true or finished

With for and since, the choice often changes the meaning. Present perfect normally means the situation continues now. Past simple presents the whole situation as finished or separated from now. This contrast is very practical with live, work, know, study, own, and be. Be careful: for three years does not automatically require the present perfect. The question is whether the period reaches the present. If the person still lives, works, studies, or owns something now, present perfect is usually right. If the period is over, past simple is usually right.

Danger zone

Common traps

The biggest trap is mixing present perfect with a finished-time phrase. Finished words close the time window, so the past simple is required. Another trap is using present perfect after when to ask for a specific past time. For normal completed events, when usually takes the past simple. In informal American English, speakers sometimes use past simple with just, already, or yet when the result is clear. In international or more formal English, present perfect is the safer choice when you want to show a present result.

Quick decision guide

Choose by meaning, not by translating a time word mechanically. Present perfect means: past event plus present connection; the exact time is not important or the time period is still open. It is common for news, results now, life experience, and situations continuing to now. Past simple means: completed event in a finished time; the timeline point is important, stated, or understood. If you add a finished-time phrase, use past simple. If you ask when something happened, use past simple. If you explain what is true now because of the past, use present perfect.
