Introduction

What these words do

Discourse markers and conversation fillers are small words or phrases that help a conversation move smoothly. They often do not change the basic facts of a sentence; they show attitude, direction, or timing. In speech, they help you answer carefully, correct yourself, add a side point, return to the topic, or invite the other person to continue. Use them more in speaking, messages, interviews, and dialogue than in formal reports.

Cognitive metaphor

Conversation road signs

Think of conversation as a road system. Your main message is the road; discourse markers are signs. Well is a slow-down sign before an answer. Actually is a correction or new-information sign. Anyway brings you back to the main road. I mean repairs or explains your last words. You know checks shared understanding. By the way opens a side road. So can introduce a result, a conclusion, or a next-step question. This is why these words feel optional grammatically but important socially: they tell the listener how to follow you.
Core pattern

Where markers sit

Most markers appear at the beginning of a sentence or turn, followed by a small pause in speech and often a comma in writing. They can also appear in the middle or at the end when they comment on the whole sentence. Common frames are marker plus statement, marker plus question, and sentence plus marker. In careful writing, commas show that the marker is separate from the main grammar. In fast informal messages, commas are often dropped, but the pause is still understood.

Contrast

Marker or ordinary word?

Closest confusion: a marker is not the same as the ordinary meaning of the same word. Well can describe performance, or it can manage an answer. Actually can sit inside a clause and emphasize truth, or it can stand at the start and correct or reframe. Anyway is a conversation marker meaning return, continue, or despite that. Danger zone

Do not overfill the sentence

Do not use fillers as decoration. Too many markers can make you sound unsure or distracted, especially you know, I mean, and actually. They are useful, but the main sentence still needs normal grammar and clear meaning. In formal writing, replace some conversational markers with clearer signposts such as however, in fact, in any case, or returning to the main point. Be careful with actually: it can sound as if you are saying the listener is wrong when your tone is sharp.
Summary

The practical choice

Choose the marker by conversation job. Well softens or delays. Actually corrects or adds a surprising fact. Anyway returns, continues, or closes. I mean repairs or explains. You know checks shared experience. By the way adds a side topic. So starts a result, conclusion, or next-step question. If the sentence works without the marker, the facts stay mostly the same, but the conversation feels less guided.
