What adverbs do

Adverbs add extra information to a verb, an adjective, another adverb, or a whole sentence. They answer practical questions such as how often, how, how much, when, and where. In English, position is part of the grammar. A frequency adverb usually lives near the verb, a manner or place detail often comes near the end, and a degree adverb stays close to the word it changes. Start with three safe models: 'I often cook at home.' 'She answered calmly.' The goal is not to memorize every adverb, but to know which position sounds natural for each job.

Three natural positions

Think of an English sentence as having three useful adverb zones. The front zone sets the scene for the whole message, especially with time or sentence comments. The middle zone sits inside the verb area; this is the normal home of frequency adverbs such as usually, often, never, and ever. The end zone adds extra details after the verb and object, especially manner, place, and time. A safe neutral order is subject, middle adverb, verb, object, manner, place, time. This order can change for emphasis, but it is the best default for clear everyday English.

Frequency adverbs go in the middle

Adverbs of frequency say how often something happens: always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely, never, ever. With one main verb, put the frequency adverb before the verb: 'They usually walk to school.' With be, put it after be: 'She is always ready.' With auxiliaries such as have, can, will, and do, put it after the first auxiliary: 'He has never called me.' In negatives, the adverb normally follows not: 'I do not often eat meat.' In questions, it normally comes after the subject: 'Have you ever been to Canada?'

Manner, place, and time usually go at the end

Manner adverbs tell how something happens, so they usually come after the verb, or after the object if there is one. Do not separate a verb from its direct object with a manner adverb. The learner sentence 'Please close quietly the door' breaks this link; the natural correction is 'Please close the door quietly.' If the object is short and important, keep it next to the verb: 'She speaks English well.' Place usually comes before time at the end: 'We ate dinner in the kitchen last night.' Time can also move to the front to frame the message: 'Tomorrow, I have a meeting.'

Degree adverbs stay close

Degree adverbs show strength, amount, or completeness: very, really, quite, almost, too, enough. They normally sit directly before an adjective or another adverb: 'The room is very cold.' 'He drives too fast.' Enough is the important exception after adjectives and adverbs: 'She is old enough to vote.' With verbs, really and almost often come before the main verb: 'I really like this song.' Do not use very directly before a verb in standard English. Say really like or like very much, not very like.

Use this X-ray for a safe combined sentence: 'We usually eat dinner at home on Fridays.' The chunks are We, usually eat, dinner, at home, on Fridays. The core chunk is usually eat because it shows the frequency adverb in the verb area. Dinner stays next to eat, because direct objects should not be pushed away by manner adverbs. At home gives place, and on Fridays gives time. If you add a manner detail, put it after the object and before place: eat dinner quietly at home. This gives the practical end order: manner, place, time.

Adverbs are not adjectives

The closest common confusion is between adverbs and adjectives. Adjectives describe nouns or the subject after linking verbs such as be, seem, look, feel, taste, and smell. Adverbs usually describe actions, adjectives, or other adverbs. The learner error 'She drives careful' uses an adjective for an action; the correction is 'She drives carefully.' But careful is right when it describes a noun: 'She is a careful driver.' After a linking verb, English often uses an adjective: 'The soup tastes good.' When look means direct your eyes, use a manner adverb: 'He looked at me strangely.'

Danger zone

Common danger zones

The most common position mistakes come from moving an adverb too close to the wrong word. Do not put a manner adverb between a verb and its direct object. Do not put normal frequency adverbs before be in neutral sentences. Do not use very before a verb. Be careful with hard and hardly: hard can be an adjective or an adverb, but hardly means almost not. Also notice meaning changes in negatives. Not often means rarely; never means zero times. These are small position choices, but they change how natural or accurate the sentence sounds.
