Talk about a whole type, not one object:

For a whole type, use no article as the default; use a/an for one typical example, and use the when you are pointing to a specific set or using a formal class label.

Plural count nouns often name a class: Cats are independent. Uncount nouns name a general substance or idea: Music can change your mood. The plus a singular count noun can also name a species, invention, or recognized class, especially in formal style. The article choice depends first on noun type, then on the meaning you want.

Start with noun type

Start by asking two questions: is the noun countable, and am I speaking about one example or the whole field? For countable things in general, the safest everyday form is plural with no article: Buses are slow in city traffic. For uncountable things in general, also use no article and normally a singular verb; a question can be: Does exercise reduce stress? Do not add the word the just because the meaning is general. In English, no article often creates the widest generic meaning for plural and uncount nouns.

Articles as lenses

Think of articles as camera lenses. A plural or uncount noun with no article is a wide lens: it shows the whole landscape of a class. Lions are social animals is about lions as a group. The + singular: formal class label

The plus a singular count noun can be generic, but it is not the everyday default. It often appears with species, inventions, instruments, and public or technical topics. The tiger is endangered sounds like a statement from an article, lecture, or documentary. In conversation, a plural noun with no article often feels more natural. With this pattern, the names the class as a recognized label, not a known individual. Use it when the style or noun type invites it; do not force it onto every general noun.

Common article and countability errors

Common errors come from adding articles to generic plurals or making uncount nouns plural. Say Children need sleep, not The children need sleep, if you mean children in general. The version with the is correct when you mean a known group, for example your children. Say Information is useful, not Informations are useful. For one item of an uncount noun, use a measure phrase such as piece of information. The same logic applies to advice, equipment, furniture, research, and news. If you want a softer generalization, add most, many, or some instead of changing the article.
