A bare command can sound too strong in everyday situations, so speakers often use modal questions or soft openings. “Could you send me the link?” asks for help. “Can I sit here?” asks permission. “Would you like some coffee?” is an offer or invitation. “Let me check that for you.” offers help directly. Softening works by adding a little social distance.
