Introduction

What reported speech does

Reported speech tells someone else's words without quoting them exactly. You usually change the sentence so it fits the new speaker, time, and place. Direct speech can be 'I'm tired,' she said. Reported speech is She said she was tired. The reporting verb often comes in the past, so English often moves the reported verb one step back in time: He told me he couldn't come. Reported speech is not only for statements. It also reports questions, commands, requests, promises, warnings, and advice. The main skills are choosing the right reporting frame, changing pronouns and time words, and deciding whether backshift is needed.

Move the message into a new scene

Think of reported speech as moving a message into a new scene. The original speaker's I, you, here, and now belonged to the old scene. In the report, they must match the new scene. Direct speech can be 'I live here,' Anna said. Reported later from another place: Anna said she lived there. The tense often moves back because the report is looking at the message from a later time. Direct speech can be 'I'll call you tomorrow.' Reported speech is She said she would call me the next day. Backshift is a perspective tool, not a mechanical punishment: if the reporting verb is present or the fact is still true, the tense may stay the same.

Statements and the backshift pattern

For statements, use subject + reporting verb + optional that + reported clause. That is common in formal writing and useful before long clauses, but often omitted in conversation. Common backshifts after a past reporting verb are: present simple to past simple, present continuous to past continuous, present perfect or past simple to past perfect, will to would, can to could, and may to might. Examples are He said he was waiting, She said she had finished, They said they had met Tom the day before, and He said he would help. Modals such as would, could, should, and might usually do not change. Past perfect also stays past perfect. Use tell only when you include the listener: She told me that she was worried.

Sentence X-ray: what changes

X-ray this report: They said they had seen me there the day before. The frame is They said + reported clause. The message is they had seen me: the original we saw you became they had seen me because the speakers changed from we to they, you became me, and the past simple saw backshifted to had seen. The place word here became there. The time word yesterday became the day before. Learn these as functional chunks: They said, they had seen me, there, the day before. The core chunk is had seen me because it shows the reusable past-to-past-perfect report.

Form variations

Reported questions

Reported questions use ask, wonder, want to know, or a similar verb. For yes/no questions, use if or whether: She asked if I had seen Alex. They asked whether we were coming. For wh-questions, keep the question word but use statement word order: He asked where I lived. She asked what time the meeting started. Do not use do, does, or did as a question auxiliary unless it belongs to the reported content. Direct question order is Where do you live? Reported order is where I lived, not where did I live. If the reporting verb is in the present, backshift is not necessary: He asks where you live.

Form variations

Commands and requests

Commands, requests, and advice do not use a that-clause. Use reporting verb + object + to + base verb. Tell is common for commands: Dad told me to call him later. Ask is common for polite requests: She asked me to wait there. Order, remind, advise, warn, and invite follow the same infinitive pattern. For negatives, put not before to: He told us not to touch it. Please usually disappears because the reporting verb shows the politeness: Please sit down becomes She asked us to sit down. Do not backshift the main command verb; use to wait, to call, not waited or called.

Usage rules

Pronouns, time words, and no backshift

Pronouns and time words change only when the new situation requires it. The rule is meaning first. My may become her, his, their, or my depending on who reports the message. Common time and place shifts are now to then, today to that day, tonight to that night, yesterday to the day before, tomorrow to the next day or the following day, last week to the week before, next week to the following week, here to there, and this to that. Backshift is optional or unnecessary when the reporting verb is present: She says she works in sales. It may also be avoided for facts that are still true: He said the train leaves at six.

Direct speech, reported speech, and indirect questions

Do not confuse direct speech, reported speech, and polite indirect questions. Direct speech quotes the original words and keeps their grammar: She asked, 'Where do you live?' Reported speech gives the content without quotes and changes perspective: She asked where I lived. A polite indirect question asks something now, not reports someone else: Could you tell me where you live? The shared danger is word order. In both reported questions and polite indirect questions, the inner question uses statement order: where I lived, where you live. The direct question can use do-support: Where do you live? The reported version cannot use direct question order.

Watch three common errors. First, do not use question word order in reported questions. Mistake: He asked where did I live. Correct: He asked where I lived. Second, choose say and tell correctly. Say does not need a listener; tell normally does. Mistake: She told that she was busy. Correct: She said that she was busy, or She told me she was busy. Third, do not use say with an object in standard English. Mistake: He said me he was ready. Correct: He told me he was ready, or He said to me that he was ready. Also remember: asked that is not the normal frame for a yes/no question; use asked if or asked whether.
