เบน: ยินดีต้อนรับกลับสู่ Vocafy: ภาษาในชีวิตจริง เบนมาพร้อมกับคลาราเช่นเคย วันนี้เราจะมาดูภาษาหนึ่งที่ใช้กันในพื้นที่กว้างใหญ่ของโลก ตั้งแต่ชายฝั่งมหาสมุทรแอตแลนติกในแอฟริกาเหนือ ไปจนถึงคาบสมุทรอาหรับและไกลออกไป

Ben: Welcome back to Vocafy Language in Real Life. I'm Ben, here again with Clara. Today we're looking at a language spoken across a huge part of the world, from the Atlantic coast of North Africa to the Arabian Peninsula and beyond.

ภาษาอาหรับ

Arabic.

แต่คลารา การบอกว่าใครสักคน “พูดภาษาอาหรับ” ไม่ได้ทำให้เรารู้เสมอไปว่าคนคนนั้นพูดภาษาอาหรับแบบไหนกันแน่

But Clara, saying someone "speaks Arabic" doesn't always tell us exactly what Arabic they speak.

คลารา: นั่นเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นที่เหมาะที่สุด

Clara: That's the perfect place to start.

ภาษาอาหรับมีลักษณะอย่างหนึ่งที่ไม่ธรรมดาสำหรับผู้เรียน นั่นคือมีรูปแบบมาตรฐานที่ใช้ร่วมกันอย่างกว้างขวาง แต่ภาษาพูดในชีวิตประจำวันอาจแตกต่างกันมากในแต่ละพื้นที่

Arabic has something unusual for learners. There is a widely shared standard form, but everyday speech can vary greatly from one place to another.

บทสนทนาในโมร็อกโกอาจฟังดูแตกต่างจากบทสนทนาในอียิปต์ เลบานอน หรืออิรักอย่างมาก แม้ว่าผู้พูดทั้งหมดจะเรียกสิ่งที่ตนพูดว่าภาษาอาหรับก็ตาม

A conversation in Morocco might sound very different from one in Egypt, Lebanon or Iraq, even though the speakers may all describe what they speak as Arabic.

เบน: ถ้าอย่างนั้น ภาษาอาหรับเป็นภาษาเดียวหรือเป็นกลุ่มภาษากันแน่?

Ben: So is Arabic actually one language or a group of languages?

คลารา: ตรงนี้เองที่เรื่องเริ่มน่าสนใจ

Clara: That's where things become interesting.

ไม่มีคำตอบง่าย ๆ เพียงคำตอบเดียว เพราะคำว่า “ภาษา” และ “ภาษาถิ่น” ไม่ได้เป็นป้ายกำกับทางภาษาศาสตร์ล้วน ๆ ประวัติศาสตร์ วัฒนธรรม และอัตลักษณ์ก็มีความสำคัญเช่นกัน

There isn't one simple answer, because "language" and "dialect" aren't purely linguistic labels. History, culture and identity matter too.

ผู้พูดส่วนใหญ่มองว่าตนเองพูดภาษาอาหรับ และมีภาษาเขียนและภาษาทางการที่ใช้ร่วมกันเพื่อเชื่อมโยงผู้คนทั่วภูมิภาค

Most speakers see themselves as speaking Arabic, and there is a shared written and formal language connecting the region.

ขณะเดียวกัน ภาษาพูดในชีวิตประจำวันแต่ละรูปแบบก็อาจแตกต่างกันมากทั้งด้านการออกเสียง คำศัพท์ และไวยากรณ์

At the same time, the everyday spoken varieties can differ substantially in pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar.

นักภาษาศาสตร์มักใช้คำว่า “ภาวะภาษาคู่” หรือ diglossia เพื่ออธิบายสถานการณ์นี้

Linguists often discuss this situation using the term diglossia.

เบน: นี่เป็นหนึ่งในคำที่ฟังดูซับซ้อนกว่าแนวคิดเบื้องหลังมาก

Ben: That's one of those words that sounds much more complicated than the idea behind it.

แล้วภาวะภาษาคู่ในที่นี้หมายถึงอะไร?

What does diglossia mean here?

คลารา: ถ้าอธิบายอย่างง่ายที่สุด ก็หมายถึงการใช้รูปแบบต่าง ๆ ของภาษาเพื่อวัตถุประสงค์ที่แตกต่างกัน

Clara: In the simplest version, it means that different forms of a language are used for different purposes.

ภาษาอาหรับมีรูปแบบมาตรฐานที่ใช้โดยเฉพาะในการเขียนและการสื่อสารอย่างเป็นทางการ ขณะที่คนทั่วไปมักเติบโตมากับการพูดภาษาอาหรับท้องถิ่นที่บ้าน

Arabic has a standard form used especially for writing and formal communication, while people usually grow up speaking a local variety at home.

ปัจจุบันรูปแบบมาตรฐานนี้มักเรียกว่า ภาษาอาหรับมาตรฐานสมัยใหม่ หรือ MSA

The standard form today is usually called Modern Standard Arabic, or MSA.

แต่มีรายละเอียดสำคัญอย่างหนึ่ง

But there's an important detail.

ในความเป็นจริง โลกของภาษาอาหรับไม่ได้แบ่งเป็นสองกล่องอย่างเรียบร้อย โดยกล่องหนึ่งติดป้ายว่า MSA และอีกกล่องติดป้ายว่าภาษาถิ่น

It isn't really a neat world with two boxes, one labelled MSA and the other labelled dialect.

เบน: เพราะอะไร?

Ben: Why not?

คลารา: เพราะภาษาพูดที่ใช้จริงมีความซับซ้อนกว่านั้นมาก

Clara: Because real speech is much messier.

ผู้คนสามารถปรับไปมาระหว่างภาษาที่เป็นทางการมากขึ้นกับภาษาสนทนาได้ตามสถานการณ์ และอาจผสมลักษณะของภาษามาตรฐานเข้ากับองค์ประกอบจากภาษาพูดท้องถิ่นของตน

People can move between more formal and more conversational language depending on the situation. They may mix standard features with elements of their local speech.

การอภิปรายในมหาวิทยาลัย การสัมภาษณ์ทางโทรทัศน์ หรือการโต้วาทีทางการเมืองอาจฟังดูเป็นทางการกว่าบทสนทนาระหว่างเพื่อน โดยไม่จำเป็นต้องกลายเป็น MSA ตามตำราอย่างสมบูรณ์

A university discussion, a television interview or a political debate might sound more formal than a conversation between friends, without necessarily becoming pure textbook MSA.

ดังนั้น การมองเป็นสเปกตรัมจึงมักจะเหมาะกว่า

So it's often better to imagine a spectrum.

ปลายด้านหนึ่งคือภาษาอาหรับมาตรฐานที่เป็นทางการอย่างมาก ส่วนอีกด้านคือภาษาพูดในชีวิตประจำวันซึ่งมีลักษณะเฉพาะท้องถิ่นอย่างชัดเจน และผู้คนก็สามารถปรับไปมาระหว่างสองด้านนี้ได้

At one end you have highly formal Standard Arabic. At the other you have very local everyday speech. And people can move around between them.

เบน: มาเริ่มจากด้านที่เป็นทางการกันก่อน

Ben: Let's start with the formal end.

ภาษาอาหรับมาตรฐานสมัยใหม่คืออะไรกันแน่?

What exactly is Modern Standard Arabic?

คลารา: MSA คือรูปแบบมาตรฐานสมัยใหม่ของภาษาอาหรับที่มีพื้นฐานใกล้เคียงกับภาษาอาหรับคลาสสิก

Clara: MSA is the modern standardized form of Arabic closely based on Classical Arabic.

เป็นภาษาที่ผู้เรียนจะพบในการเขียนอย่างเป็นทางการส่วนใหญ่ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นหนังสือ หนังสือพิมพ์ เอกสารราชการ และสื่อการศึกษาจำนวนมาก

It is the language learners encounter in most formal writing. You'll see it in books, newspapers, official documents and much educational material.

นอกจากนี้ยังได้ยินรูปแบบต่าง ๆ ของภาษานี้ในการออกอากาศข่าว สุนทรพจน์ที่เตรียมไว้ล่วงหน้า สารคดี และสถานการณ์ที่เป็นทางการอื่น ๆ

You'll also hear forms of it in news broadcasts, prepared speeches, documentaries and other formal settings.

จุดแข็งสำคัญประการหนึ่งคือ ภาษานี้ทำให้โลกที่ใช้ภาษาอาหรับมีภาษาเขียนร่วมกันอย่างกว้างขวาง

One of its great strengths is that it gives the Arabic-speaking world a broadly shared written language.

เบน: ถ้าอย่างนั้น คนในโมร็อกโกกับคนในโอมานก็สามารถอ่านบทความหนังสือพิมพ์ชิ้นเดียวกันได้

Ben: So someone in Morocco and someone in Oman could read the same newspaper article.

คลารา: ถูกต้อง หากทั้งสองคนมีความรู้ภาษาอาหรับมาตรฐานเป็นอย่างดี

Clara: Exactly, assuming both have a good command of Standard Arabic.

แต่นั่นไม่ได้หมายความว่าโดยปกติพวกเขาจะพูดกันแบบนั้นระหว่างรับประทานอาหารเช้า

But that doesn't mean they normally speak that way over breakfast.

เด็ก ๆ มักเติบโตมากับการพูดภาษาอาหรับรูปแบบที่ครอบครัวและชุมชนใช้ ส่วนภาษาอาหรับมาตรฐานจะมีบทบาทสำคัญขึ้นมากผ่านโรงเรียน การอ่าน สื่อ และชีวิตที่เป็นทางการ

Children typically grow up speaking the Arabic variety of their family and community. Standard Arabic becomes much more important through school, reading, media and formal life.

เบน: ถ้าอย่างนั้น MSA ก็มักไม่ใช่ภาษาแรกที่เด็กเรียนรู้จากพ่อแม่

Ben: So MSA isn't normally the language a child first learns from their parents.

คลารา: ใช่

Clara: Right.

นี่เป็นเหตุผลหนึ่งที่ทำให้ภาษาอาหรับอาจดูไม่คุ้นเคยสำหรับผู้เรียน

That's one reason Arabic can feel unusual to learners.

ลองจินตนาการว่ากำลังเรียนภาษาอังกฤษ แต่กลับพบว่าภาษาที่ใช้ในหนังสือ ข่าว และโรงเรียนแตกต่างอย่างเห็นได้ชัดจากภาษาที่ผู้คนใช้กับครอบครัวอย่างเป็นธรรมชาติ

Imagine learning English, but discovering that the language of books, news and school is noticeably different from the language people naturally use with their families.

การเปรียบเทียบนี้อาจไม่ตรงทั้งหมด แต่ช่วยให้เห็นภาพว่าความแตกต่างนั้นมากเพียงใด

The comparison isn't perfect, but it gives you a sense of the distance involved.

เบน: แล้วความแตกต่างระหว่างพื้นที่ต่าง ๆ ในโลกที่ใช้ภาษาอาหรับอาจมากได้แค่ไหน?

Ben: And how large can that distance become between different parts of the Arabic-speaking world?

คลารา: มากทีเดียว

Clara: Quite large.

มีกลุ่มใหญ่ ๆ เช่น ภาษาอาหรับอียิปต์ ภาษาอาหรับเลแวนต์ ภาษาอาหรับแถบอ่าว ภาษาอาหรับอิรัก และภาษาอาหรับมาเกร็บ และภายในกลุ่มเหล่านี้ยังมีความแตกต่างระดับภูมิภาคและท้องถิ่นอีกมากมาย

There are broad groups such as Egyptian, Levantine, Gulf, Iraqi and Maghrebi Arabic, and within those there are many more regional and local differences.

ผู้พูดมักเข้าใจภาษาอาหรับรูปแบบที่ใช้ในพื้นที่ใกล้เคียงได้ค่อนข้างง่าย ขณะที่รูปแบบจากภูมิภาคห่างไกลอาจเข้าใจได้ยากกว่ามาก

Neighbouring varieties are often relatively easy for speakers to understand, while varieties from distant regions can be much harder.

แต่ภูมิศาสตร์ไม่ใช่ปัจจัยเดียว

But geography isn't the only factor.

ความคุ้นเคยจากการได้ยินก็สำคัญเช่นกัน

Exposure matters too.

หากได้ยินภาษาอาหรับรูปแบบใดรูปแบบหนึ่งผ่านโทรทัศน์ เพลง หรือสื่อออนไลน์มานานหลายปี ก็อาจเข้าใจรูปแบบนั้นได้ดีกว่าที่ระยะทางทางภูมิศาสตร์เพียงอย่างเดียวจะบ่งบอก

If you've spent years hearing a particular variety in television, music or online media, you may understand it much better than geographical distance alone would suggest.

เบน: และนั่นนำเรามาสู่อียิปต์

Ben: Which brings us to Egypt.

ถ้าเล่าเรื่องนี้แบบเดิม ๆ ก็คงเรียกภาษาอาหรับอียิปต์ว่าเป็นภาษากลางอย่างไม่เป็นทางการของโลกอาหรับ

The original version of this story would probably call Egyptian Arabic the unofficial common language of the Arab world.

นั่นเป็นการกล่าวเกินจริงไปหรือไม่?

Is that going too far?

คลารา: ใช่ แต่เบื้องหลังคำกล่าวนั้นมีความจริงที่สำคัญอยู่

Clara: Yes, but there's an important truth behind it.

อียิปต์มีอิทธิพลอย่างมหาศาลต่อวัฒนธรรมสมัยนิยมภาษาอาหรับในช่วงศตวรรษที่ยี่สิบ

Egypt had an enormous influence on Arabic-language popular culture during the twentieth century.

ภาพยนตร์ เพลง รายการวิทยุ และโทรทัศน์ของอียิปต์แพร่หลายไปทั่วภูมิภาค ด้วยเหตุนี้ ภาษาอาหรับอียิปต์จึงกลายเป็นรูปแบบภาษาที่คุ้นเคยสำหรับผู้คนจำนวนมหาศาลซึ่งไม่ได้พูดภาษานี้เป็นภาษาของตนเอง

Egyptian films, songs, radio programmes and television travelled throughout the region. As a result, Egyptian Arabic became familiar to huge numbers of people who didn't speak it themselves.

เบน: ถ้าอย่างนั้น บางคนอาจเข้าใจภาษาอาหรับอียิปต์ได้ส่วนหนึ่งเพราะเติบโตมากับการชมภาพยนตร์อียิปต์

Ben: So someone might understand Egyptian Arabic partly because they grew up watching Egyptian movies.

คลารา: ถูกต้อง

Clara: Exactly.

นี่เป็นตัวอย่างที่ชัดเจนว่าสื่อสามารถเปลี่ยนแปลงความเข้าใจระหว่างภาษาแต่ละรูปแบบได้อย่างไร

It's a great example of how media can change mutual understanding between language varieties.

ภาษาอาหรับอียิปต์ไม่ได้เข้ามาแทนที่ภาษาพูดท้องถิ่นของประเทศอื่น และผู้คนจากต่างภูมิภาคก็ไม่ได้เปลี่ยนไปใช้ภาษาอาหรับอียิปต์โดยอัตโนมัติเมื่อพบกัน

Egyptian Arabic didn't replace the local speech of other countries, and people from different regions don't automatically switch to Egyptian when they meet.

แต่วัฒนธรรมสมัยนิยมที่สั่งสมมาหลายทศวรรษทำให้ภาษานี้กลายเป็นหนึ่งในรูปแบบภาษาพูดอาหรับที่ผู้คนรู้จักอย่างกว้างขวางที่สุด

But decades of popular culture made it one of the most widely recognised spoken forms of Arabic.

เบน: แล้วจะเกิดอะไรขึ้นเมื่อผู้พูดภาษาอาหรับสองคนไม่สามารถเข้าใจภาษาพูดท้องถิ่นของกันและกันได้ง่าย ๆ?

Ben: What happens when two Arabic speakers don't easily understand each other's local speech?

คลารา: พวกเขาก็ปรับตัว

Clara: They adapt.

พวกเขาอาจหลีกเลี่ยงสำนวนที่มีลักษณะเฉพาะถิ่นมาก ๆ เลือกใช้คำศัพท์ที่คาดว่าอีกฝ่ายจะรู้จัก ปรับไปใช้รูปแบบที่ผู้คนเข้าใจกันกว้างขวางกว่า หรือนำองค์ประกอบของภาษาอาหรับมาตรฐานเข้ามาใช้

They might avoid strongly local expressions. They may use vocabulary they expect the other person to recognise. They can move toward more widely understood forms or bring in elements of Standard Arabic.

วิธีที่เลือกใช้จะแตกต่างกันไปตามผู้พูด ภูมิหลัง และสถานการณ์

The exact strategy depends on the speakers, their backgrounds and the situation.

นี่เป็นอีกเหตุผลหนึ่งที่ภาพง่าย ๆ แบบ “MSA ปะทะภาษาถิ่น” ไม่สามารถสะท้อนชีวิตจริงได้อย่างครบถ้วน

That's another reason the simple picture of "MSA versus dialect" doesn't quite capture real life.

เบน: มาดูสิ่งหนึ่งที่ผู้เรียนแทบทุกคนสังเกตเห็นทันที

Ben: Let's look at something that almost every learner notices immediately.

นั่นคือระบบการเขียน

The writing system.

คลารา: ภาษาอาหรับเขียนจากขวาไปซ้าย และตัวอักษรจะเปลี่ยนรูปตามตำแหน่งที่ปรากฏในคำ

Clara: Arabic is written from right to left, and its letters change shape depending on where they appear in a word.

ตอนแรกอาจดูยาก แต่ระบบนี้มีกฎเกณฑ์สม่ำเสมอกว่าที่เห็นมาก

That can look difficult at first, but the system is much more regular than it may appear.

ตัวอักษรส่วนใหญ่เชื่อมต่อกับตัวอักษรที่อยู่ข้าง ๆ ทำให้ภาษาอาหรับเขียนมีลักษณะลื่นไหลซึ่งมองออกได้ทันที

Most letters connect to the letters around them, so written Arabic has that flowing appearance that makes it instantly recognisable.

ยังมีอีกลักษณะหนึ่งที่ทำให้ผู้เรียนประหลาดใจเช่นกัน

There is another feature that surprises learners too.

โดยทั่วไป สระเสียงสั้นมักไม่เขียนกำกับไว้ในข้อความทั่วไป

Short vowels are often not written in ordinary texts.

เบน: แล้วผู้คนรู้ได้อย่างไรว่าคำนั้นอ่านว่าอะไร?

Ben: So how do people know what the word says?

คลารา: ส่วนใหญ่อาศัยคำศัพท์ ไวยากรณ์ และบริบท

Clara: Mostly from vocabulary, grammar and context.

สามารถเติมเครื่องหมายสระเมื่อจำเป็นได้ และเครื่องหมายเหล่านี้มีประโยชน์อย่างยิ่งในหนังสือสำหรับเด็ก คัมภีร์ทางศาสนา และสื่อสำหรับผู้เรียน

Extra vowel marks can be added when needed, and they're especially useful in children's books, religious texts and materials for learners.

แต่ผู้อ่านที่มีประสบการณ์มักไม่จำเป็นต้องใช้เครื่องหมายเหล่านี้ในการอ่านข้อความทั่วไป

But experienced readers usually don't need them for ordinary text.

เบน: ฟังดูยากไม่น้อย

Ben: That sounds difficult.

คลารา: ในช่วงแรกอาจเป็นเช่นนั้น

Clara: At first it can be.

แต่ภาษาอาหรับยังมอบเบาะแสอันทรงพลังอีกอย่างหนึ่งให้ผู้เรียนในการทำความเข้าใจคำศัพท์ นั่นคือระบบรากศัพท์และแบบแผนการสร้างคำ

But Arabic also gives learners another powerful clue to vocabulary, and that's its system of roots and patterns.

คำภาษาอาหรับจำนวนมากสร้างขึ้นจากรากศัพท์ที่ประกอบด้วยพยัญชนะสามตัว

Many Arabic words are built around a root containing three consonants.

ตัวอย่างคลาสสิกคือ K-T-B ซึ่งเกี่ยวข้องกับการเขียน

A classic example is K-T-B, which is associated with writing.

คำในตระกูลนี้ประกอบด้วย kitaab ที่แปลว่าหนังสือ kaatib ที่แปลว่านักเขียน maktab ที่แปลว่าสำนักงานหรือโต๊ะทำงาน และ maktaba ที่แปลว่าห้องสมุดหรือร้านหนังสือ

From this family you get words such as kitaab for book, kaatib for writer, maktab for office or desk, and maktaba for library or bookshop.

เบน: นี่เป็นหนึ่งในลักษณะของภาษาอาหรับที่ชอบมากที่สุด

Ben: That's one of my favourite features of Arabic.

เมื่อมองออกว่าเป็นราก K-T-B คำเหล่านั้นก็ไม่ดูเหมือนไม่เกี่ยวข้องกันเลยอีกต่อไป

Once you recognise K-T-B, those words stop looking completely unrelated.

คลารา: ถูกต้อง

Clara: Exactly.

แต่อย่ามองว่าระบบนี้เป็นรหัสที่ช่วยให้เดาคำทุกคำได้โดยอัตโนมัติ

You shouldn't think of it as a code that lets you automatically guess every word.

ภาษาไม่ได้ใจดีกับเราถึงขนาดนั้น

Language is never quite that cooperative.

อย่างไรก็ตาม รากศัพท์ช่วยจัดระเบียบคำศัพท์ภาษาอาหรับจำนวนมหาศาลให้อยู่เป็นตระกูล

But roots help organise a huge amount of Arabic vocabulary into families.

เมื่อผู้เรียนเริ่มมองเห็นรากศัพท์ที่คุ้นเคยภายในคำที่ไม่คุ้นเคย ภาษาอาหรับก็อาจเริ่มดูเป็นระบบและคาดเดาได้มากขึ้น

Once learners start recognising familiar roots inside unfamiliar words, the language can begin to feel much less random.

เบน: แล้วก็ยังมีเรื่องเสียง

Ben: And then there are the sounds.

ภาษาอาหรับมีชื่อเสียงว่าออกเสียงยาก

Arabic has a reputation for being difficult to pronounce.

คลารา: ภาษาอาหรับมีเสียงหลายเสียงที่ผู้พูดภาษาอังกฤษไม่คุ้นเคย

Clara: It does contain several sounds that English speakers aren't used to.

ตัวอย่างที่มีชื่อเสียงอย่างหนึ่งคือเสียงที่แทนด้วยตัวอักษรอาหรับ อัยน์ (ayn)

One famous example is the sound represented by the Arabic letter ayn.

ภาษาอาหรับยังมีคู่เสียงพยัญชนะที่ในช่วงแรกอาจฟังดูคล้ายกันมากสำหรับผู้เรียน แต่สามารถแยกความหมายของคำสำหรับเจ้าของภาษาได้

Arabic also has consonant contrasts that can initially sound very similar to learners but distinguish words for native speakers.

ความท้าทายไม่ได้อยู่แค่การออกเสียงที่ไม่คุ้นเคยให้ได้เพียงครั้งเดียว

The challenge isn't simply producing an unusual sound once.

ผู้เรียนต้องฝึกฟังความแตกต่างให้ได้อย่างแม่นยำ แล้วจึงออกเสียงเหล่านั้นอย่างเป็นธรรมชาติภายในคำและประโยค

You have to learn to hear the difference reliably and then produce it naturally inside words and sentences.

เบน: การออกเสียงแตกต่างกันไปตามรูปแบบระดับภูมิภาคด้วยหรือไม่?

Ben: Does pronunciation vary between the regional varieties too?

คลารา: แตกต่างกันมาก

Clara: Very much so.

ตัวอักษรเดียวกันอาจออกเสียงต่างกันในแต่ละพื้นที่ของโลกที่ใช้ภาษาอาหรับ

The same written letter can be pronounced differently in different parts of the Arabic-speaking world.

นี่เป็นอีกเหตุผลสำคัญที่ผู้เรียนควรรู้ว่ากำลังฟังภาษาอาหรับรูปแบบใด

That gives learners another good reason to know which variety they're listening to.

ไม่มีสำเนียงภาษาอาหรับในชีวิตประจำวันที่เป็นสากลเพียงสำเนียงเดียวให้เรียนจนเชี่ยวชาญ

There isn't just one universal everyday Arabic accent waiting to be mastered.

เบน: และนั่นนำเรามาสู่คำถามเชิงปฏิบัติที่น่าจะสำคัญที่สุดของตอนนี้

Ben: And that brings us to probably the biggest practical question in the entire episode.

หากวันนี้ตัดสินใจว่าอยากเรียนภาษาอาหรับ ควรเรียนอะไรกันแน่?

If I decide today that I want to learn Arabic, what should I actually learn?

MSA หรือภาษาพูดรูปแบบใดรูปแบบหนึ่ง?

MSA or one of the spoken varieties?

คลารา: คำตอบที่ดีที่สุดนั้นเรียบง่ายจนน่าหงุดหงิด

Clara: The best answer is frustratingly simple.

ขึ้นอยู่กับว่าต้องการนำภาษาไปใช้ทำอะไร

It depends on what you want to do.

หากต้องการอ่านหนังสือพิมพ์และหนังสือ ติดตามข่าวอย่างเป็นทางการ ทำงานกับภาษาอาหรับเขียน หรือสื่อสารข้ามประเทศในบริบทที่เป็นทางการ MSA มีประโยชน์อย่างยิ่ง

If you want to read newspapers and books, follow formal news, work with written Arabic or communicate across countries in formal contexts, MSA is extremely valuable.

หากกำลังจะย้ายไปจอร์แดนและเป้าหมายหลักคือการพูดคุยกับผู้คนในคาเฟ่ ร้านค้า และชีวิตประจำวัน ภาษาอาหรับเลแวนต์ที่ใช้พูดจะนำไปใช้ได้ทันที

If you're moving to Jordan and your main goal is talking to people in cafés, shops and everyday life, spoken Levantine Arabic will be immediately useful.

หากอาศัยอยู่ในไคโร ภาษาอาหรับอียิปต์ก็เป็นตัวเลือกที่ชัดเจนสำหรับชีวิตประจำวัน

If you're living in Cairo, Egyptian Arabic becomes the obvious everyday choice.

เบน: ถ้าอย่างนั้น MSA ก็ไม่ใช่กุญแจสารพัดประโยชน์ที่ไขทุกบทสนทนาได้โดยอัตโนมัติ

Ben: So MSA isn't the master key that automatically unlocks every conversation.

คลารา: ถูกต้อง

Clara: Exactly.

MSA เปิดทางให้เข้าถึงส่วนที่ผู้ใช้ภาษาอาหรับมีร่วมกันและมีความสำคัญอย่างยิ่ง โดยเฉพาะภาษาเขียนและภาษาทางการ

It gives you access to a shared and enormously important part of Arabic, especially the written and formal language.

แต่การรู้ MSA ไม่ได้หมายความว่าจะเข้าใจบทสนทนาในชีวิตประจำวันที่รวดเร็วในทุกประเทศได้โดยอัตโนมัติ

But knowing MSA doesn't automatically mean you'll understand rapid everyday conversation in every country.

ในทางกลับกันก็เช่นเดียวกัน

The reverse is also true.

ผู้ที่เรียนเพียงภาษาท้องถิ่นรูปแบบเดียวอาจสื่อสารได้ดีมากในภูมิภาคนั้น แต่ยังคงรู้สึกว่าการอ่านภาษาเขียนอย่างเป็นทางการเป็นเรื่องยาก

Someone who learns only one local variety may communicate very well in that region while still finding formal writing difficult.

เบน: ผู้เรียนต้องเลือกอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่งแล้วละเลยอีกอย่างหรือไม่?

Ben: Do learners have to choose one and ignore the other?

คลารา: ไม่จำเป็นเลย

Clara: Not at all.

สำหรับผู้เรียนที่ตั้งใจจริงจำนวนมาก การเรียน MSA ควบคู่ไปกับภาษาพูดรูปแบบหนึ่งเป็นทางเลือกที่สมเหตุสมผลมาก

For many serious learners, learning some MSA alongside one spoken variety makes a lot of sense.

อาจเรียนตัวอักษร การอ่าน และคำศัพท์ทางการที่ใช้ได้กว้างขวางผ่าน MSA พร้อมกับค่อย ๆ พัฒนาทักษะการฟังและการพูดในรูปแบบภาษาที่เกี่ยวข้องกับชีวิตของตนมากที่สุด

You might learn the script, reading and broader formal vocabulary through MSA while gradually building your listening and speaking skills in the variety most relevant to your life.

สัดส่วนความสำคัญที่ให้กับแต่ละรูปแบบสามารถเปลี่ยนแปลงได้ตามเป้าหมาย

How much attention you give each one can change with your goals.

เบน: ฟังดูสมจริงกว่าการบอกว่าทุกคนควรใช้เวลาสองปีเรียน MSA แล้วค่อยเริ่มเรียนว่าผู้คนพูดกันจริง ๆ อย่างไร

Ben: That feels more realistic than saying everyone should spend two years on MSA and only then start learning how people actually talk.

คลารา: สมจริงกว่ามาก

Clara: Much more realistic.

ไม่มีเส้นทางที่ถูกต้องเพียงเส้นทางเดียวสำหรับผู้เรียนทุกคน

There isn't one correct route for every learner.

ผู้ที่ศึกษาวรรณกรรมอาหรับย่อมมีความต้องการต่างจากผู้ที่กำลังจะย้ายไปเบรุต และทั้งสองกลุ่มก็มีความต้องการต่างจากผู้ที่เพียงอยากพูดคุยกับคนในครอบครัว

Someone studying Arabic literature has different needs from someone moving to Beirut, and both have different needs from someone who simply wants to speak with relatives.

สิ่งสำคัญคือการเข้าใจตั้งแต่เริ่มต้นว่า ภาษาอาหรับมีหลายรูปแบบซึ่งทำหน้าที่แตกต่างกัน

The important thing is to understand from the beginning that Arabic has different forms serving different purposes.

เมื่อเข้าใจเช่นนั้น ความหลากหลายก็จะกลายเป็นสิ่งที่วางแผนรับมือได้ แทนที่จะเป็นเรื่องที่สร้างความประหลาดใจในภายหลัง

Then the variation becomes something you can plan for rather than something that surprises you later.

เบน: และนั่นนำเรากลับมาสู่ชื่อของตอนนี้

Ben: Which brings us back to our title.

หนึ่งภาษา พันเสียง

One language, a thousand voices.

คลารา: ถูกต้อง

Clara: Exactly.

แน่นอนว่าคำว่า “พัน” เป็นถ้อยคำเชิงกวี แต่แนวคิดนี้มีความสำคัญ

The "thousand" is poetic, of course, but the idea matters.

ภาษาอาหรับมีทั้งขนบที่ผู้คนยึดโยงร่วมกันอย่างเหนียวแน่นและรูปแบบมาตรฐานที่ใช้กันอย่างกว้างขวาง ขณะที่ภาษาพูดในชีวิตประจำวันสะท้อนภูมิศาสตร์อันกว้างใหญ่และความหลากหลายของผู้ใช้ภาษา

Arabic has a powerful shared tradition and a widely used standard form, while everyday speech reflects the enormous geography and diversity of the people who use it.

สองสิ่งนี้ไม่ได้หักล้างกัน

Those two things don't cancel each other out.

ทั้งสองล้วนเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของภาษาอาหรับ

They're both part of Arabic.

เบน: ถ้าอย่างนั้น คำถามที่น่าสนใจอาจไม่ใช่ว่าภาษาอาหรับเป็นภาษาเดียวจริง ๆ หรือแอบเป็นหลายภาษา

Ben: So perhaps the interesting question isn't whether Arabic is really one language or secretly many languages.

คลารา: เห็นด้วย

Clara: I think that's right.

สำหรับผู้เรียน คำถามที่มีประโยชน์กว่าคือรูปแบบต่าง ๆ ของภาษาอาหรับเชื่อมโยงกันอย่างไร

For a learner, the more useful question is how its different forms connect.

ภาษาที่อ่านในหนังสือพิมพ์ ได้ยินในสุนทรพจน์อย่างเป็นทางการ ฟังในภาพยนตร์อียิปต์ และใช้สนทนาในอัมมานอาจไม่ได้ฟังดูเหมือนกัน

The language you read in a newspaper, hear in a formal speech, watch in an Egyptian film and use in a conversation in Amman may not sound the same.

แต่ภาษาเหล่านี้ก็ไม่ได้เป็นโลกที่แยกขาดจากกัน

But they're not isolated worlds either.

การเรียนภาษาอาหรับหมายถึงการค่อย ๆ เรียนรู้ว่าจะก้าวไปในภูมิทัศน์ทางภาษานี้อย่างไร

Learning Arabic means gradually learning how to move through that landscape.

เบน: แล้วทันใดนั้น ความซับซ้อนก็เริ่มดูเหมือนเป็นส่วนหนึ่งที่ทำให้ภาษาน่าสนใจ มากกว่าจะเป็นปัญหา

Ben: And suddenly the complexity starts looking less like a problem and more like part of what makes the language interesting.

คลารา: ถูกต้อง

Clara: Exactly.

ไม่จำเป็นต้องเรียนภาษาอาหรับทุกรูปแบบ

You don't need to learn every variety.

สิ่งที่ต้องรู้คือเรียนภาษาอาหรับไปเพื่ออะไร เลือกจุดเริ่มต้นที่เป็นประโยชน์ และเข้าใจว่าโลกของภาษาจะค่อย ๆ เปิดกว้างออกไปหลายทิศทางระหว่างการเรียนรู้

You need to know why you're learning Arabic, choose a useful place to begin, and understand that the language will open up in different directions as you go.

เบน: นั่นเป็นคำตอบที่ดีกว่าการมองหาภาษาอาหรับฉบับมหัศจรรย์เพียงรูปแบบเดียวที่ใช้ได้ทุกที่อย่างแน่นอน

Ben: I think that's a much better answer than looking for one magical version of Arabic that works everywhere.

คลารา ขอบคุณที่ช่วยเราคลี่คลายเรื่องนี้

Clara, thanks for helping us unpack it.

คลารา: ยินดีเสมอ เบน

Clara: My pleasure, Ben.

เบน: และขอบคุณทุกคนที่รับฟัง แล้วพบกันครั้งหน้าใน Vocafy: ภาษาในชีวิตจริง

Ben: And thanks to everyone listening. We'll see you next time on Vocafy Language in Real Life.
