A green light showed the place where the pirate ship, the Jolly Roger, stayed in the water. It was a dark and dirty ship. People on the land were afraid of this ship. It was a very scary place.
The night was quiet. Smee sat at a sewing machine and worked hard. Smee was a simple man, but he was also a pirate. Captain Hook sometimes cried when he looked at Smee. Smee did not know why he made Captain Hook sad.
Some pirates looked at the dark water. Other pirates played games with cards on the deck. The four pirates who carried the little house were now asleep. They moved their bodies when Captain Hook walked past them. They did not want Captain Hook to touch them.
Captain Hook walked on the deck and thought. He was very successful today. He thought Peter Pan was dead. He had all the other boys on his ship. Soon, he would make the boys walk the plank (a long piece of wood on the side of a ship). If a person walks the plank, they fall into the sea and die.
Captain Hook was not happy. He felt very alone on the ship. He was a smart man, but his pirates were not smart. He felt that he was better than the other pirates. Captain Hook always thought about acting like a gentleman.
Captain Hook remembered his old school. He wanted to be a person with "good form." This means he wanted to act the right way. He asked himself if he was a good person today. These thoughts made him feel bad. He was very unhappy.
Captain Hook was afraid that he would die soon. He wanted to make a last speech. "I wish I was not so ambitious," Captain Hook said to himself. He looked at Smee. Smee was sewing and he looked happy.
Smee thought all the children were afraid of him. But the children were not afraid of Smee. The children liked Smee because he was kind to them. Even Michael liked Smee. Captain Hook did not understand why the children liked Smee.
Suddenly, the pirates began to dance and make a lot of noise. Captain Hook was angry. "Be quiet!" Captain Hook shouted. He told the pirates to bring the children from the bottom of the ship. The pirates dragged the boys to the deck.
Captain Hook looked at the boys. He told them that six boys must die tonight. But he needed two boys to work on the ship. Captain Hook asked which boys wanted to be pirates. The boys did not want to join the pirates.
Tootles stepped forward. He said his mother would not like him to be a pirate. Slightly and the Twins said the same thing. They all talked about their mothers. This made Captain Hook very angry. "Stop talking!" Captain Hook roared.
Captain Hook looked at John. He thought John was a brave boy. John said he once wanted to be a pirate. Captain Hook was happy. But John had one question. He asked if he could still love the King of England.
Captain Hook said no. A pirate must hate the King. John and Michael refused to join the pirates. "Then you will die!" Captain Hook shouted. He told the pirates to bring Wendy to the deck.
Wendy came to the deck. She looked at the ship and she was angry. The ship was very dirty. Wendy saw that the pirates did not clean anything. Captain Hook told Wendy to say her last words to the boys.
Wendy was very brave. She told the boys to die like English gentlemen. The pirates were surprised by her words. The boys were proud of Wendy. Then Captain Hook told the pirates to tie Wendy to the mast (the tall pole that holds the sails on a ship).
Smee tied Wendy to the mast. The boys looked at the plank. They were very afraid now. They shivered because they did not want to die. Captain Hook smiled at them. He wanted to make Wendy watch the boys die.
Suddenly, everyone heard a sound. It was "tick-tick-tick-tick." The pirates were very quiet. The boys heard the sound too. Everyone looked at Captain Hook. They knew that sound very well. It was the crocodile!
Captain Hook was terrified. He fell to the deck and he could not move. The sound came closer and closer. Captain Hook thought the crocodile was coming onto the ship. He crawled away from the sound.
"Hide me!" Captain Hook cried to his pirates. The pirates stood around Captain Hook. The boys ran to the side of the ship. They wanted to see the crocodile. But it was not the crocodile.
It was Peter Pan! Peter Pan was making the "tick-tick" sound with his mouth. Peter Pan told the boys to be quiet. He had a plan to save them.
