Incident of Dr. Lanyon

Time passed. The police offered thousands of pounds for news about the murder. People were very angry because Sir Danvers Carew was a good man. But Mr. Hyde disappeared completely. No one could find him. The police learned many things about Mr. Hyde’s past. He was a very cruel man. He lived a bad life and had strange friends. People always hated him. But after the morning of the murder, Mr. Hyde was gone. Mr. Utterson began to feel calm again. He was happy because Mr. Hyde was gone. Dr. Jekyll also began a new life. He came out of his house and saw his friends again. He looked happy and healthy. Dr. Jekyll worked very hard to help poor people. He was also very busy with religion. For more than two months, Dr. Jekyll was at peace. His face looked bright and he was a good host to his guests. On the 8th of January, Mr. Utterson had dinner at Dr. Jekyll’s house. Dr. Lanyon was there too. The three men were all friends again. But on the 12th of January, Dr. Jekyll would not see Mr. Utterson. On the 14th and 15th, Mr. Utterson tried to visit again. Each time, the door was shut. Poole said that Dr. Jekyll stayed in his room and saw no one. Mr. Utterson felt lonely and worried. On the sixth night, he went to see Dr. Lanyon. Mr. Utterson was shocked when he saw Dr. Lanyon. Dr. Lanyon looked like he was going to die soon. He was very pale and thin. He was balder and he looked much older. But his eyes were the most shocking thing. Dr. Lanyon looked terrified. Mr. Utterson thought Dr. Lanyon was afraid of death. Dr. Lanyon said that he had a big shock. He said he would never recover. He said he only had a few weeks to live. "Dr. Jekyll is ill too," said Mr. Utterson. "Have you seen him?" Dr. Lanyon’s face changed. He held up a trembling hand. He spoke in a loud, shaky voice. He said he never wanted to see Dr. Jekyll again. He said that Dr. Jekyll was like a dead man to him. Mr. Utterson was very surprised. He said they were three very old friends. But Dr. Lanyon did not change his mind. He told Mr. Utterson to talk about other things. He said he could not bear to talk about Dr. Jekyll. Mr. Utterson went home and wrote a letter to Dr. Jekyll. He asked why Dr. Jekyll and Dr. Lanyon were not friends now. The next day, Dr. Jekyll wrote a long answer. The letter was very sad and mysterious. Dr. Jekyll wrote that he and Dr. Lanyon must never meet. He said he must live a very quiet life alone. He told Mr. Utterson not to doubt his friendship. But he said his door would be shut to everyone. "I have a punishment that I cannot name," Dr. Jekyll wrote. He said he was a great sinner. He said he was suffering very much. He asked Mr. Utterson to respect his silence. Mr. Utterson was amazed and confused. A week later, Dr. Lanyon went to bed because he was very ill. In less than two weeks, Dr. Lanyon was dead. After the funeral (a ceremony for a dead person), Mr. Utterson went into his office. Mr. Utterson took out an envelope from Dr. Lanyon. The envelope said: "Private. For Mr. Utterson only." It also said: "Destroy this paper if Mr. Utterson dies first." Mr. Utterson felt afraid, but he opened it. Inside, there was another envelope. It said: "Do not open until the death or disappearance of Dr. Henry Jekyll." Mr. Utterson could not believe his eyes. The word "disappearance" was there again. This word was in Dr. Jekyll’s will because of Mr. Hyde. But why did Dr. Lanyon write it too? Mr. Utterson wanted to read the paper immediately. But he was a man of honour. He put the paper in his safe (a strong metal box for keeping papers). Mr. Utterson did not visit Dr. Jekyll as much after that. He thought of Dr. Jekyll kindly, but he was also fearful. He was relieved when Poole said he could not come in. He preferred to talk to Poole on the doorstep. Poole said that Dr. Jekyll stayed in the room over the laboratory. Dr. Jekyll even slept there sometimes. He was very silent and he did not read books. It seemed that Dr. Jekyll had a heavy problem on his mind.
