Around eight or nine in the morning, the Time Traveller reached the metal seat. This was the same place where he first looked at the world. He thought about his first ideas. He laughed because he was so wrong before. The world was still very beautiful. He saw the green trees and the silver river.

People in bright clothes moved among the trees. Some people were swimming where the Time Traveller saved Weena. This gave the Time Traveller a sharp pain in his heart. He looked at the cupolas (small, round buildings over the holes to the underworld). He understood the truth now. The life of the Eloi was like the life of cows in a field. They had no enemies and no worries. But in the end, they were only meat for the Morlocks.

The Time Traveller felt sad. Human intelligence was gone because life was too easy. Long ago, people wanted a world that was safe and comfortable. They succeeded, but then they stopped thinking. Nature only gives us intelligence when we have problems to solve. Without danger, there is no need to be smart.

The Eloi became weak and pretty. The Morlocks worked with machines, so they were a bit stronger. One day, the Morlocks had no more food. They began to eat the Eloi. This was the terrible end of human history. This was how the Time Traveller explained the year 802,701.

The Time Traveller was very tired and the sun was warm. He lay down on the grass and had a long sleep. He woke up just before the sun went down. He felt safe from the Morlocks in the light. He walked down the hill toward the White Sphinx. He held his iron bar and felt the matches in his pocket.

Then, something very strange happened. The big bronze (a strong, brown metal) doors of the Sphinx were open. The Time Traveller stopped and looked. He was afraid to go inside. But then he saw the Time Machine in a small room. The Time Traveller had the levers in his pocket. He thought the Morlocks were giving up. He threw his iron bar away.

The Time Traveller walked toward the machine. He realized the Morlocks had a plan. He walked into the room and touched the machine. It was clean and had oil on it. The Morlocks tried to understand how it worked. Suddenly, the heavy doors closed with a loud noise. It was dark. The Time Traveller was in a trap.

The Time Traveller heard the Morlocks laughing. He was not afraid at first. He wanted to light a match and leave like a ghost. But then he remembered something terrible. These matches only worked if he rubbed them on the matchbox. But the matchbox was lost! Now he was very afraid.

The Morlocks were very close to him in the dark. One Morlock touched him. The Time Traveller hit the Morlocks with his hands. He climbed onto the seat of the machine. Many small hands pulled at his clothes. He felt for the holes where the levers belonged.

One Morlock almost took a lever away. The Time Traveller hit the Morlock with his head. He heard the Morlock's head hit the floor. It was a very hard fight. Finally, the Time Traveller pushed the lever into the machine. He pulled it hard. The hands fell away and the darkness disappeared. He was travelling through time again.
