The next morning, the Scarecrow was very excited. "Congratulate me!" he told his friends. "I am going to get my brains!" He went to the Throne Room.

"Come in," said Oz.

"I am here for my brains," the Scarecrow said.

"Of course," said Oz. "I need to take off your head to put the brains inside."

"That is fine," said the Scarecrow. "Just make my head better than before."

So Oz, the humbug, took off the Scarecrow's head. He emptied out the old straw. Then he got a mix of bran (the outside part of wheat) with many sharp pins and needles. He filled the top of the Scarecrow's head with this mix. He put new straw in the rest of the space.

Oz put the head back on the Scarecrow's body. "Now you will be a very smart man," Oz said. "I gave you brand-new brains." The Scarecrow was very proud and happy. He went back to his friends.

"How do you feel?" Dorothy asked. His head was now very big at the top.

"I feel very wise," he said.

"Why are there pins and needles sticking out of your head?" asked the Tin Woodman.

"That shows he is 'sharp'," said the Lion.

Next, the Tin Woodman went to Oz. "I have come for my heart," he said.

"Okay," said Oz. "I must cut a hole in your chest to put it in."

"That is fine. I will not feel it," said the Woodman.

So Oz used tin scissors to cut a small square hole in the Tin Woodman's chest. He took out a pretty heart made of red silk. It was full of soft sawdust. "Isn't it beautiful?" Oz asked. He put the silk heart inside the Tin Woodman. Then he fixed the hole. "Now you have a heart," he said. The Tin Woodman was very happy and thanked Oz.

Now it was the Lion's turn. He went to the Throne Room. "I have come for my courage," he said.

"Very well," said Oz. He took a green bottle from a high shelf. He poured a green liquid from the bottle into a beautiful dish. "Drink this," he told the Lion.

"What is it?" asked the Lion.

"It is courage," Oz said. "But it is only courage after you drink it. Courage is always inside you." The Lion drank all of the liquid.

"How do you feel now?" asked Oz.

"Full of courage!" said the Lion happily. He went back to tell his friends the good news.

Oz was alone. He smiled. He was happy that he could make his friends believe they got what they wanted. "It was easy to make them happy," he thought. "They believed I could do anything. But Dorothy is a different problem. I don't know how to get her back to Kansas. That will need more than just imagination."
