Ben: Welcome back to Vocafy Language in Real Life. I'm Ben, here again with Clara. Today we're looking at a language spoken across a huge part of the world, from the Atlantic coast of North Africa to the Arabian Peninsula and beyond.

আরবি।

Arabic.

কিন্তু ক্লারা, কেউ ‘আরবি বলেন’ বললেই তিনি ঠিক কোন আরবি বলেন, তা সব সময় বোঝা যায় না।

But Clara, saying someone "speaks Arabic" doesn't always tell us exactly what Arabic they speak.

ক্লারা: শুরু করার জন্য এটাই একেবারে সঠিক জায়গা।

Clara: That's the perfect place to start.

শিক্ষার্থীদের কাছে আরবির একটি অস্বাভাবিক বৈশিষ্ট্য আছে। বহুল ব্যবহৃত একটি অভিন্ন মানক রূপ থাকলেও দৈনন্দিন কথ্য ভাষা এক জায়গা থেকে অন্য জায়গায় অনেকটাই বদলে যেতে পারে।

Arabic has something unusual for learners. There is a widely shared standard form, but everyday speech can vary greatly from one place to another.

মরক্কোর কোনো কথোপকথন মিশর, লেবানন বা ইরাকের কথোপকথন থেকে একেবারেই আলাদা শোনাতে পারে, যদিও বক্তারা সবাই নিজেদের ভাষাকে আরবি বলেন।

A conversation in Morocco might sound very different from one in Egypt, Lebanon or Iraq, even though the speakers may all describe what they speak as Arabic.

বেন: তাহলে আরবি কি আসলে একটি ভাষা, নাকি একদল ভাষা?

Ben: So is Arabic actually one language or a group of languages?

ক্লারা: এখানেই বিষয়টি আকর্ষণীয় হয়ে ওঠে।

Clara: That's where things become interesting.

এর কোনো একক সহজ উত্তর নেই, কারণ ‘ভাষা’ ও ‘উপভাষা’ কেবল ভাষাবিজ্ঞানের তকমা নয়। ইতিহাস, সংস্কৃতি ও পরিচয়ও এখানে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।

There isn't one simple answer, because "language" and "dialect" aren't purely linguistic labels. History, culture and identity matter too.

অধিকাংশ বক্তাই নিজেদের আরবিভাষী মনে করেন, আর পুরো অঞ্চলকে যুক্ত করে রেখেছে একটি অভিন্ন লিখিত ও আনুষ্ঠানিক ভাষা।

Most speakers see themselves as speaking Arabic, and there is a shared written and formal language connecting the region.

একই সঙ্গে, দৈনন্দিন কথ্য রূপগুলোর উচ্চারণ, শব্দভান্ডার ও ব্যাকরণে যথেষ্ট পার্থক্য থাকতে পারে।

At the same time, the everyday spoken varieties can differ substantially in pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar.

ভাষাবিদেরা প্রায়ই এই পরিস্থিতি বোঝাতে ‘ডাইগ্লসিয়া’ শব্দটি ব্যবহার করেন।

Linguists often discuss this situation using the term diglossia.

বেন: এটি এমন একটি শব্দ, যা এর অন্তর্নিহিত ধারণার চেয়ে অনেক বেশি জটিল শোনায়।

Ben: That's one of those words that sounds much more complicated than the idea behind it.

এখানে ডাইগ্লসিয়া বলতে কী বোঝায়?

What does diglossia mean here?

ক্লারা: সহজভাবে বললে, একই ভাষার ভিন্ন রূপ ভিন্ন উদ্দেশ্যে ব্যবহৃত হওয়াকে ডাইগ্লসিয়া বলে।

Clara: In the simplest version, it means that different forms of a language are used for different purposes.

আরবিতে একটি মানক রূপ রয়েছে, যা মূলত লেখা ও আনুষ্ঠানিক যোগাযোগে ব্যবহৃত হয়। অন্যদিকে, মানুষ সাধারণত পরিবারে একটি স্থানীয় কথ্য রূপ শুনে ও বলে বড় হন।

Arabic has a standard form used especially for writing and formal communication, while people usually grow up speaking a local variety at home.

আজকের এই মানক রূপটিকে সাধারণত আধুনিক মানক আরবি, সংক্ষেপে MSA, বলা হয়।

The standard form today is usually called Modern Standard Arabic, or MSA.

তবে এখানে একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বিষয় আছে।

But there's an important detail.

বাস্তব পরিস্থিতি এমন নয় যে পরিষ্কার দুটি বাক্স রয়েছে—একটির গায়ে লেখা MSA, অন্যটির গায়ে উপভাষা।

It isn't really a neat world with two boxes, one labelled MSA and the other labelled dialect.

বেন: কেন নয়?

Ben: Why not?

ক্লারা: কারণ বাস্তব কথাবার্তা অনেক বেশি জটিল ও মিশ্র।

Clara: Because real speech is much messier.

পরিস্থিতি অনুযায়ী মানুষ বেশি আনুষ্ঠানিক ও বেশি কথোপকথনমূলক ভাষার মধ্যে যাতায়াত করেন। তাঁরা স্থানীয় কথ্য রূপের উপাদানের সঙ্গে মানক ভাষার বৈশিষ্ট্যও মিশিয়ে নিতে পারেন।

People can move between more formal and more conversational language depending on the situation. They may mix standard features with elements of their local speech.

বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের আলোচনা, টেলিভিশন সাক্ষাৎকার বা রাজনৈতিক বিতর্ক বন্ধুদের কথোপকথনের চেয়ে বেশি আনুষ্ঠানিক শোনাতে পারে, তবে তা পুরোপুরি পাঠ্যবইয়ের MSA হয়ে যায় না।

A university discussion, a television interview or a political debate might sound more formal than a conversation between friends, without necessarily becoming pure textbook MSA.

তাই একে ধারাবাহিক একটি পরিসর হিসেবে ভাবাই ভালো।

So it's often better to imagine a spectrum.

এক প্রান্তে রয়েছে অত্যন্ত আনুষ্ঠানিক মানক আরবি। অন্য প্রান্তে রয়েছে খুবই স্থানীয় দৈনন্দিন কথ্য ভাষা। আর মানুষ এই দুই প্রান্তের মাঝামাঝি নানা জায়গায় চলাচল করতে পারেন।

At one end you have highly formal Standard Arabic. At the other you have very local everyday speech. And people can move around between them.

বেন: তাহলে আনুষ্ঠানিক প্রান্তটি দিয়েই শুরু করা যাক।

Ben: Let's start with the formal end.

আধুনিক মানক আরবি আসলে কী?

What exactly is Modern Standard Arabic?

ক্লারা: MSA হলো ধ্রুপদি আরবির ওপর ঘনিষ্ঠভাবে ভিত্তি করে গড়ে ওঠা আরবির আধুনিক মানক রূপ।

Clara: MSA is the modern standardized form of Arabic closely based on Classical Arabic.

আনুষ্ঠানিক লিখিত ভাষায় শিক্ষার্থীরা মূলত এই রূপটিরই মুখোমুখি হন। বই, সংবাদপত্র, সরকারি নথি ও শিক্ষা উপকরণের বড় অংশে এটি দেখা যায়।

It is the language learners encounter in most formal writing. You'll see it in books, newspapers, official documents and much educational material.

সংবাদ সম্প্রচার, প্রস্তুত করা ভাষণ, তথ্যচিত্র এবং অন্যান্য আনুষ্ঠানিক পরিবেশেও এর নানা রূপ শোনা যায়।

You'll also hear forms of it in news broadcasts, prepared speeches, documentaries and other formal settings.

এর অন্যতম বড় শক্তি হলো, এটি পুরো আরবিভাষী বিশ্বের জন্য একটি বহুল অভিন্ন লিখিত ভাষা তৈরি করেছে।

One of its great strengths is that it gives the Arabic-speaking world a broadly shared written language.

বেন: তাহলে মরক্কোর একজন এবং ওমানের একজন একই সংবাদপত্রের নিবন্ধ পড়তে পারবেন।

Ben: So someone in Morocco and someone in Oman could read the same newspaper article.

ক্লারা: ঠিক তাই—যদি দুজনেরই মানক আরবিতে ভালো দখল থাকে।

Clara: Exactly, assuming both have a good command of Standard Arabic.

তবে তার মানে এই নয় যে তাঁরা সকালের নাশতার টেবিলে সাধারণত এভাবেই কথা বলেন।

But that doesn't mean they normally speak that way over breakfast.

শিশুরা সাধারণত পরিবার ও সমাজে প্রচলিত আরবির স্থানীয় রূপটি শুনে ও বলে বড় হয়। স্কুল, পড়াশোনা, গণমাধ্যম ও আনুষ্ঠানিক জীবনের মাধ্যমে মানক আরবি অনেক বেশি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ হয়ে ওঠে।

Children typically grow up speaking the Arabic variety of their family and community. Standard Arabic becomes much more important through school, reading, media and formal life.

বেন: অর্থাৎ MSA সাধারণত এমন ভাষা নয়, যা একটি শিশু প্রথমে মা-বাবার কাছ থেকে শেখে।

Ben: So MSA isn't normally the language a child first learns from their parents.

ক্লারা: ঠিক।

Clara: Right.

এ কারণেই শিক্ষার্থীদের কাছে আরবিকে কিছুটা অস্বাভাবিক মনে হতে পারে।

That's one reason Arabic can feel unusual to learners.

ভাবুন, আপনি ইংরেজি শিখছেন, কিন্তু পরে দেখলেন বই, সংবাদ ও স্কুলের ভাষা মানুষ পরিবারের সঙ্গে স্বাভাবিকভাবে যে ভাষায় কথা বলেন, তা থেকে বেশ আলাদা।

Imagine learning English, but discovering that the language of books, news and school is noticeably different from the language people naturally use with their families.

তুলনাটি পুরোপুরি নিখুঁত নয়, তবে ব্যবধানটি কেমন হতে পারে সে সম্পর্কে একটি ধারণা দেয়।

The comparison isn't perfect, but it gives you a sense of the distance involved.

বেন: আর আরবিভাষী বিশ্বের ভিন্ন ভিন্ন অংশের মধ্যে এই ব্যবধান কতটা বড় হতে পারে?

Ben: And how large can that distance become between different parts of the Arabic-speaking world?

ক্লারা: বেশ বড়।

Clara: Quite large.

মিশরীয়, লেভান্টাইন, উপসাগরীয়, ইরাকি ও মাগরেবি আরবির মতো বড় বড় গোষ্ঠী রয়েছে। এগুলোর মধ্যেও আবার অসংখ্য আঞ্চলিক ও স্থানীয় পার্থক্য আছে।

There are broad groups such as Egyptian, Levantine, Gulf, Iraqi and Maghrebi Arabic, and within those there are many more regional and local differences.

পাশাপাশি অঞ্চলের ভাষারূপগুলো সাধারণত বক্তাদের কাছে তুলনামূলকভাবে সহজবোধ্য হয়, কিন্তু দূরের অঞ্চলের রূপগুলো বোঝা অনেক কঠিন হতে পারে।

Neighbouring varieties are often relatively easy for speakers to understand, while varieties from distant regions can be much harder.

তবে ভৌগোলিক দূরত্বই একমাত্র বিষয় নয়।

But geography isn't the only factor.

কোন ভাষারূপের সঙ্গে কতটা পরিচিতি রয়েছে, সেটিও গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।

Exposure matters too.

কেউ যদি বছরের পর বছর টেলিভিশন, সংগীত বা অনলাইন মাধ্যমে কোনো নির্দিষ্ট কথ্য রূপ শুনে থাকেন, তাহলে কেবল ভৌগোলিক দূরত্বের হিসাবে যতটা বোঝার কথা, বাস্তবে তার চেয়ে অনেক বেশিই বুঝতে পারেন।

If you've spent years hearing a particular variety in television, music or online media, you may understand it much better than geographical distance alone would suggest.

বেন: আর এ প্রসঙ্গেই আসে মিশর।

Ben: Which brings us to Egypt.

এই আলোচনার মূল সংস্করণে সম্ভবত মিশরীয় আরবিকে আরব বিশ্বের অঘোষিত সাধারণ ভাষা বলা হতো।

The original version of this story would probably call Egyptian Arabic the unofficial common language of the Arab world.

এভাবে বলা কি একটু বাড়াবাড়ি হয়ে যায়?

Is that going too far?

ক্লারা: হ্যাঁ, তবে কথাটির পেছনে একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সত্য রয়েছে।

Clara: Yes, but there's an important truth behind it.

বিশ শতকে আরবি ভাষার জনপ্রিয় সংস্কৃতির ওপর মিশরের বিপুল প্রভাব ছিল।

Egypt had an enormous influence on Arabic-language popular culture during the twentieth century.

মিশরীয় চলচ্চিত্র, গান, বেতার অনুষ্ঠান ও টেলিভিশন অনুষ্ঠান পুরো অঞ্চলে ছড়িয়ে পড়েছিল। ফলে নিজেরা মিশরীয় আরবিতে কথা না বললেও বিপুলসংখ্যক মানুষের কাছে এই ভাষারূপটি পরিচিত হয়ে ওঠে।

Egyptian films, songs, radio programmes and television travelled throughout the region. As a result, Egyptian Arabic became familiar to huge numbers of people who didn't speak it themselves.

বেন: তাহলে কেউ হয়তো ছোটবেলা থেকে মিশরীয় সিনেমা দেখে বড় হয়েছেন বলেই মিশরীয় আরবি কিছুটা বুঝতে পারেন।

Ben: So someone might understand Egyptian Arabic partly because they grew up watching Egyptian movies.

ক্লারা: ঠিক তাই।

Clara: Exactly.

গণমাধ্যম কীভাবে বিভিন্ন ভাষারূপের পারস্পরিক বোধগম্যতা বদলে দিতে পারে, এটি তার দারুণ উদাহরণ।

It's a great example of how media can change mutual understanding between language varieties.

মিশরীয় আরবি অন্য দেশগুলোর স্থানীয় কথ্য ভাষার জায়গা নেয়নি। আবার ভিন্ন অঞ্চলের মানুষ দেখা হলে স্বয়ংক্রিয়ভাবে মিশরীয় আরবিতে কথা বলতে শুরু করেন না।

Egyptian Arabic didn't replace the local speech of other countries, and people from different regions don't automatically switch to Egyptian when they meet.

তবে কয়েক দশকের জনপ্রিয় সংস্কৃতি এটিকে আরবির সবচেয়ে পরিচিত কথ্য রূপগুলোর একটিতে পরিণত করেছে।

But decades of popular culture made it one of the most widely recognised spoken forms of Arabic.

বেন: দুই আরবিভাষী যদি একে অন্যের স্থানীয় কথ্য ভাষা সহজে বুঝতে না পারেন, তখন কী হয়?

Ben: What happens when two Arabic speakers don't easily understand each other's local speech?

ক্লারা: তাঁরা নিজেদের ভাষা মানিয়ে নেন।

Clara: They adapt.

তাঁরা হয়তো খুব স্থানীয় অভিব্যক্তি এড়িয়ে চলেন। এমন শব্দ ব্যবহার করেন, যা অন্যজন চিনবেন বলে মনে হয়। তাঁরা আরও বহুল বোধগম্য রূপের দিকে যেতে পারেন বা মানক আরবির কিছু উপাদান যোগ করতে পারেন।

They might avoid strongly local expressions. They may use vocabulary they expect the other person to recognise. They can move toward more widely understood forms or bring in elements of Standard Arabic.

ঠিক কোন কৌশল ব্যবহৃত হবে, তা বক্তাদের অভিজ্ঞতা, পটভূমি ও পরিস্থিতির ওপর নির্ভর করে।

The exact strategy depends on the speakers, their backgrounds and the situation.

এ কারণেও ‘MSA বনাম উপভাষা’—এই সরল চিত্রটি বাস্তব জীবনকে পুরোপুরি তুলে ধরতে পারে না।

That's another reason the simple picture of "MSA versus dialect" doesn't quite capture real life.

বেন: এবার এমন একটি বিষয় দেখা যাক, যা প্রায় প্রত্যেক শিক্ষার্থীই শুরুতে লক্ষ করেন।

Ben: Let's look at something that almost every learner notices immediately.

লিখনপদ্ধতি।

The writing system.

ক্লারা: আরবি ডান দিক থেকে বাঁ দিকে লেখা হয়। কোনো অক্ষর শব্দের কোথায় আছে, তার ওপর ভিত্তি করে সেটির আকারও বদলে যায়।

Clara: Arabic is written from right to left, and its letters change shape depending on where they appear in a word.

প্রথমে এটি কঠিন মনে হতে পারে, তবে দেখতে যতটা জটিল লাগে, পদ্ধতিটি আসলে তার চেয়ে অনেক বেশি নিয়মিত।

That can look difficult at first, but the system is much more regular than it may appear.

বেশির ভাগ অক্ষর পাশের অক্ষরের সঙ্গে যুক্ত হয়। এ কারণেই লিখিত আরবির চেহারা এত প্রবহমান এবং দেখামাত্র চেনা যায়।

Most letters connect to the letters around them, so written Arabic has that flowing appearance that makes it instantly recognisable.

আরেকটি বৈশিষ্ট্যও শিক্ষার্থীদের অবাক করে।

There is another feature that surprises learners too.

সাধারণ লেখায় হ্রস্ব স্বরধ্বনি প্রায়ই লেখা হয় না।

Short vowels are often not written in ordinary texts.

বেন: তাহলে শব্দটিতে কী লেখা আছে, মানুষ বোঝেন কীভাবে?

Ben: So how do people know what the word says?

ক্লারা: মূলত শব্দভান্ডার, ব্যাকরণ ও প্রসঙ্গ থেকে।

Clara: Mostly from vocabulary, grammar and context.

প্রয়োজন হলে অতিরিক্ত স্বরচিহ্ন যোগ করা যায়। শিশুদের বই, ধর্মীয় গ্রন্থ এবং শিক্ষার্থীদের উপকরণে এগুলো বিশেষভাবে উপকারী।

Extra vowel marks can be added when needed, and they're especially useful in children's books, religious texts and materials for learners.

তবে অভিজ্ঞ পাঠকদের সাধারণ লেখা পড়তে সাধারণত এগুলোর প্রয়োজন হয় না।

But experienced readers usually don't need them for ordinary text.

বেন: বিষয়টি কঠিন শোনাচ্ছে।

Ben: That sounds difficult.

ক্লারা: প্রথমদিকে কঠিন লাগতে পারে।

Clara: At first it can be.

তবে শব্দভান্ডার বোঝার জন্য আরবিতে শিক্ষার্থীদের সামনে আরেকটি শক্তিশালী সূত্র আছে—এর শব্দমূল ও ছাঁচের পদ্ধতি।

But Arabic also gives learners another powerful clue to vocabulary, and that's its system of roots and patterns.

আরবির অনেক শব্দ তিনটি ব্যঞ্জনধ্বনির একটি মূলকে কেন্দ্র করে গড়ে ওঠে।

Many Arabic words are built around a root containing three consonants.

এর একটি পরিচিত উদাহরণ হলো K-T-B, যা লেখার ধারণার সঙ্গে সম্পর্কিত।

A classic example is K-T-B, which is associated with writing.

এই শব্দ-পরিবার থেকেই পাওয়া যায় কিতাব, অর্থাৎ বই; কাতিব, অর্থাৎ লেখক; মাকতাব, অর্থাৎ অফিস বা ডেস্ক; এবং মাকতাবা, অর্থাৎ গ্রন্থাগার বা বইয়ের দোকান।

From this family you get words such as kitaab for book, kaatib for writer, maktab for office or desk, and maktaba for library or bookshop.

বেন: এটি আরবির ক্ষেত্রে আমার সবচেয়ে পছন্দের বৈশিষ্ট্যগুলোর একটি।

Ben: That's one of my favourite features of Arabic.

একবার K-T-B মূলটি চিনতে পারলে শব্দগুলোকে আর একেবারে সম্পর্কহীন মনে হয় না।

Once you recognise K-T-B, those words stop looking completely unrelated.

ক্লারা: ঠিক তাই।

Clara: Exactly.

তবে একে এমন কোনো সংকেতলিপি ভাবা উচিত নয়, যার সাহায্যে প্রতিটি শব্দের অর্থ স্বয়ংক্রিয়ভাবে অনুমান করা যাবে।

You shouldn't think of it as a code that lets you automatically guess every word.

ভাষা কখনোই এত সহজে সব রহস্য খুলে দেয় না।

Language is never quite that cooperative.

তবে শব্দমূল আরবির বিপুল শব্দভান্ডারকে বিভিন্ন পরিবারে সাজাতে সাহায্য করে।

But roots help organise a huge amount of Arabic vocabulary into families.

শিক্ষার্থীরা যখন অচেনা শব্দের ভেতরে পরিচিত মূল চিনতে শুরু করেন, তখন ভাষাটিকে অনেক কম এলোমেলো মনে হতে থাকে।

Once learners start recognising familiar roots inside unfamiliar words, the language can begin to feel much less random.

বেন: এরপর আসে ধ্বনিগুলো।

Ben: And then there are the sounds.

আরবির উচ্চারণ কঠিন—এমন একটি পরিচিত ধারণা রয়েছে।

Arabic has a reputation for being difficult to pronounce.

ক্লারা: আরবিতে সত্যিই এমন কয়েকটি ধ্বনি আছে, যেগুলোতে ইংরেজিভাষীরা অভ্যস্ত নন।

Clara: It does contain several sounds that English speakers aren't used to.

একটি বিখ্যাত উদাহরণ হলো আরবি ‘আয়ন’ (ayn) অক্ষরের ধ্বনি।

One famous example is the sound represented by the Arabic letter ayn.

আরবিতে ব্যঞ্জনধ্বনির এমন কিছু ভেদও রয়েছে, যা শুরুতে শিক্ষার্থীদের কানে প্রায় একই রকম শোনালেও আরবির মাতৃভাষীদের কাছে শব্দের অর্থ আলাদা করে দেয়।

Arabic also has consonant contrasts that can initially sound very similar to learners but distinguish words for native speakers.

চ্যালেঞ্জটি কেবল একবার কোনো অচেনা ধ্বনি উচ্চারণ করতে পারা নয়।

The challenge isn't simply producing an unusual sound once.

আপনাকে নির্ভরযোগ্যভাবে ধ্বনিগুলোর পার্থক্য শুনতে শিখতে হবে, তারপর শব্দ ও বাক্যের ভেতরে সেগুলো স্বাভাবিকভাবে উচ্চারণ করতে হবে।

You have to learn to hear the difference reliably and then produce it naturally inside words and sentences.

বেন: আঞ্চলিক রূপগুলোর মধ্যে কি উচ্চারণও বদলে যায়?

Ben: Does pronunciation vary between the regional varieties too?

ক্লারা: অনেকটাই বদলে যায়।

Clara: Very much so.

একই লিখিত অক্ষর আরবিভাষী বিশ্বের ভিন্ন ভিন্ন অঞ্চলে ভিন্নভাবে উচ্চারিত হতে পারে।

The same written letter can be pronounced differently in different parts of the Arabic-speaking world.

তাই শিক্ষার্থীরা আরবির কোন রূপটি শুনছেন, তা জানার আরেকটি ভালো কারণ এটি।

That gives learners another good reason to know which variety they're listening to.

আয়ত্ত করার মতো একটিমাত্র সর্বজনীন দৈনন্দিন আরবি উচ্চারণ নেই।

There isn't just one universal everyday Arabic accent waiting to be mastered.

বেন: আর এবার আসা যাক সম্ভবত পুরো পর্বের সবচেয়ে বড় ব্যবহারিক প্রশ্নে।

Ben: And that brings us to probably the biggest practical question in the entire episode.

আমি যদি আজই আরবি শেখার সিদ্ধান্ত নিই, তাহলে আসলে কী শেখা উচিত?

If I decide today that I want to learn Arabic, what should I actually learn?

MSA, নাকি কোনো কথ্য রূপ?

MSA or one of the spoken varieties?

ক্লারা: সেরা উত্তরটি এত সহজ যে কিছুটা হতাশ লাগতে পারে।

Clara: The best answer is frustratingly simple.

আপনি কী করতে চান, তার ওপরই সব নির্ভর করছে।

It depends on what you want to do.

আপনি যদি সংবাদপত্র ও বই পড়তে চান, আনুষ্ঠানিক সংবাদ বুঝতে চান, লিখিত আরবি নিয়ে কাজ করতে চান বা আনুষ্ঠানিক পরিবেশে বিভিন্ন দেশের মানুষের সঙ্গে যোগাযোগ করতে চান, তাহলে MSA অত্যন্ত মূল্যবান।

If you want to read newspapers and books, follow formal news, work with written Arabic or communicate across countries in formal contexts, MSA is extremely valuable.

আপনি যদি জর্ডানে গিয়ে বসবাস করেন এবং ক্যাফে, দোকান ও দৈনন্দিন জীবনে মানুষের সঙ্গে কথা বলাই আপনার প্রধান লক্ষ্য হয়, তাহলে কথ্য লেভান্টাইন আরবি সঙ্গে সঙ্গেই কাজে আসবে।

If you're moving to Jordan and your main goal is talking to people in cafés, shops and everyday life, spoken Levantine Arabic will be immediately useful.

কায়রোতে থাকলে দৈনন্দিন ব্যবহারের স্বাভাবিক পছন্দ হবে মিশরীয় আরবি।

If you're living in Cairo, Egyptian Arabic becomes the obvious everyday choice.

বেন: তাহলে MSA এমন কোনো মহাচাবি নয়, যা স্বয়ংক্রিয়ভাবে সব কথোপকথনের দরজা খুলে দেয়।

Ben: So MSA isn't the master key that automatically unlocks every conversation.

ক্লারা: ঠিক তাই।

Clara: Exactly.

এটি আপনাকে আরবির একটি অভিন্ন ও অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অংশে প্রবেশের সুযোগ দেয়, বিশেষ করে লিখিত ও আনুষ্ঠানিক ভাষায়।

It gives you access to a shared and enormously important part of Arabic, especially the written and formal language.

তবে MSA জানলেই যে প্রতিটি দেশের দ্রুতগতির দৈনন্দিন কথোপকথন স্বয়ংক্রিয়ভাবে বুঝতে পারবেন, তা নয়।

But knowing MSA doesn't automatically mean you'll understand rapid everyday conversation in every country.

এর উল্টোটাও সত্যি।

The reverse is also true.

কেউ যদি কেবল একটি স্থানীয় রূপ শেখেন, তাহলে সেই অঞ্চলে খুব ভালোভাবে যোগাযোগ করতে পারলেও আনুষ্ঠানিক লেখা বুঝতে তাঁর অসুবিধা হতে পারে।

Someone who learns only one local variety may communicate very well in that region while still finding formal writing difficult.

বেন: শিক্ষার্থীদের কি একটি বেছে নিয়ে অন্যটি উপেক্ষা করতে হবে?

Ben: Do learners have to choose one and ignore the other?

ক্লারা: একেবারেই নয়।

Clara: Not at all.

আরবি ভালোভাবে শিখতে চান এমন অনেকের জন্য MSA-এর পাশাপাশি একটি কথ্য রূপ শেখা যথেষ্ট যুক্তিসংগত।

For many serious learners, learning some MSA alongside one spoken variety makes a lot of sense.

MSA-এর মাধ্যমে আপনি লিপি, পড়া এবং বিস্তৃত আনুষ্ঠানিক শব্দভান্ডার শিখতে পারেন। পাশাপাশি আপনার জীবনে সবচেয়ে প্রাসঙ্গিক কথ্য রূপটিতে ধীরে ধীরে শোনা ও বলার দক্ষতাও গড়ে তুলতে পারেন।

You might learn the script, reading and broader formal vocabulary through MSA while gradually building your listening and speaking skills in the variety most relevant to your life.

লক্ষ্য অনুযায়ী কোনটিতে কতটা মনোযোগ দেবেন, তা বদলাতে পারে।

How much attention you give each one can change with your goals.

বেন: সবারই আগে MSA নিয়ে দু-বছর কাটানো উচিত, আর তারপর মানুষ বাস্তবে কীভাবে কথা বলেন তা শেখা শুরু করা উচিত—এমন ধারণার চেয়ে এটি অনেক বেশি বাস্তবসম্মত।

Ben: That feels more realistic than saying everyone should spend two years on MSA and only then start learning how people actually talk.

ক্লারা: অনেক বেশি বাস্তবসম্মত।

Clara: Much more realistic.

প্রত্যেক শিক্ষার্থীর জন্য একটিমাত্র সঠিক পথ নেই।

There isn't one correct route for every learner.

যিনি আরবি সাহিত্য পড়ছেন, তাঁর প্রয়োজন বৈরুতে বসবাস করতে যাওয়া কারও চেয়ে আলাদা। আবার তাঁদের দুজনের প্রয়োজনই শুধু আত্মীয়স্বজনের সঙ্গে কথা বলতে চান এমন কারও প্রয়োজন থেকে ভিন্ন।

Someone studying Arabic literature has different needs from someone moving to Beirut, and both have different needs from someone who simply wants to speak with relatives.

গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বিষয় হলো, শুরু থেকেই বুঝতে হবে যে আরবির বিভিন্ন রূপ ভিন্ন ভিন্ন প্রয়োজনে ব্যবহৃত হয়।

The important thing is to understand from the beginning that Arabic has different forms serving different purposes.

তাহলে এই বৈচিত্র্য পরে হঠাৎ চমকে দেওয়ার বদলে এমন কিছু হয়ে উঠবে, যার জন্য আপনি আগে থেকেই পরিকল্পনা করতে পারবেন।

Then the variation becomes something you can plan for rather than something that surprises you later.

বেন: আর এখানেই আমরা আবার আমাদের শিরোনামে ফিরে আসি।

Ben: Which brings us back to our title.

এক ভাষা, হাজার কণ্ঠ।

One language, a thousand voices.

ক্লারা: ঠিক তাই।

Clara: Exactly.

‘হাজার’ সংখ্যাটি অবশ্য কাব্যিক, তবে এর অন্তর্নিহিত ধারণাটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।

The "thousand" is poetic, of course, but the idea matters.

আরবির রয়েছে শক্তিশালী এক অভিন্ন ঐতিহ্য ও বহুল ব্যবহৃত মানক রূপ। অন্যদিকে, দৈনন্দিন কথ্য ভাষায় প্রতিফলিত হয় এটি ব্যবহারকারী মানুষের বিস্তীর্ণ ভৌগোলিক পরিসর ও বিপুল বৈচিত্র্য।

Arabic has a powerful shared tradition and a widely used standard form, while everyday speech reflects the enormous geography and diversity of the people who use it.

এই দুটি বিষয় একে অন্যকে নাকচ করে না।

Those two things don't cancel each other out.

দুটিই আরবির অংশ।

They're both part of Arabic.

বেন: তাহলে আরবি সত্যিই একটি ভাষা, নাকি গোপনে অনেক ভাষা—সম্ভবত সেটি সবচেয়ে আকর্ষণীয় প্রশ্ন নয়।

Ben: So perhaps the interesting question isn't whether Arabic is really one language or secretly many languages.

ক্লারা: আমারও তাই মনে হয়।

Clara: I think that's right.

একজন শিক্ষার্থীর জন্য আরও কার্যকর প্রশ্ন হলো, আরবির বিভিন্ন রূপ একে অন্যের সঙ্গে কীভাবে যুক্ত।

For a learner, the more useful question is how its different forms connect.

সংবাদপত্রে যে আরবি পড়েন, আনুষ্ঠানিক ভাষণে যে আরবি শোনেন, মিশরীয় সিনেমায় যে আরবি শোনেন এবং আম্মানের কথোপকথনে যে আরবি ব্যবহার করেন—সব কটি একই রকম নাও শোনাতে পারে।

The language you read in a newspaper, hear in a formal speech, watch in an Egyptian film and use in a conversation in Amman may not sound the same.

তবে এগুলো সম্পূর্ণ বিচ্ছিন্ন জগৎও নয়।

But they're not isolated worlds either.

আরবি শেখার অর্থ হলো ধীরে ধীরে এই বিস্তৃত ভাষাভূমির ভেতর পথ চলতে শেখা।

Learning Arabic means gradually learning how to move through that landscape.

বেন: আর তখনই জটিলতাকে সমস্যার মতো কম এবং ভাষাটিকে আকর্ষণীয় করে তোলা বৈশিষ্ট্যের মতো বেশি মনে হতে শুরু করে।

Ben: And suddenly the complexity starts looking less like a problem and more like part of what makes the language interesting.

ক্লারা: ঠিক তাই।

Clara: Exactly.

আপনাকে আরবির প্রতিটি রূপ শিখতে হবে না।

You don't need to learn every variety.

কেন আরবি শিখছেন তা জানতে হবে, শুরু করার জন্য উপযোগী একটি জায়গা বেছে নিতে হবে এবং বুঝতে হবে যে এগোতে থাকলে ভাষার ভিন্ন ভিন্ন দিক আপনার সামনে খুলে যাবে।

You need to know why you're learning Arabic, choose a useful place to begin, and understand that the language will open up in different directions as you go.

বেন: সবখানে কাজে লাগে এমন আরবির কোনো জাদুকরি রূপ খোঁজার চেয়ে এটি অনেক ভালো উত্তর বলে আমার মনে হয়।

Ben: I think that's a much better answer than looking for one magical version of Arabic that works everywhere.

ক্লারা, বিষয়টি খুলে বুঝিয়ে দিতে সাহায্য করার জন্য ধন্যবাদ।

Clara, thanks for helping us unpack it.

ক্লারা: খুব ভালো লাগল, বেন।

Clara: My pleasure, Ben.

বেন: আর যাঁরা শুনেছেন, সবাইকে ধন্যবাদ। Vocafy-এর ‘বাস্তব জীবনে ভাষা’ অনুষ্ঠানের পরের পর্বে আবার দেখা হবে।

Ben: And thanks to everyone listening. We'll see you next time on Vocafy Language in Real Life.
