বেন: Vocafy Unpacked-এ আবারও স্বাগত। আমি বেন, আর আমার সঙ্গে আছেন ক্লারা। আজ আমরা প্রায় এক শতাব্দী পেছনে ফিরে এমন একজনের সঙ্গে পরিচিত হব, ভাষা শেখার বিষয়ে যাঁর দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি আজও আশ্চর্যরকম আধুনিক শোনায়।
Ben: Welcome back to Vocafy Unpacked. I'm Ben, and I'm here with Clara. Today we're going back almost a century to meet someone whose approach to language learning can sound surprisingly modern.
ক্লারা: হ্যালো, বেন। শুরুতেই সম্ভবত স্বীকার করা উচিত, এই গল্পটির প্রতি আমার বিশেষ টান আছে। কাতো লোম্ব আমার সবচেয়ে শ্রদ্ধেয় ভাষাশিক্ষার্থীদের একজন।
Clara: Hi Ben. And I should probably admit from the beginning that I have a soft spot for this one. Kató Lomb is one of the language learners I admire most.
বেন: বেশ জোরালো সুপারিশ। তিনি কে ছিলেন?
Ben: That's a strong recommendation. Who was she?
ক্লারা: তিনি ছিলেন হাঙ্গেরীয়, জন্ম ১৯০৯ সালে। আর তাঁর প্রাথমিক শিক্ষাজগৎ ভাষাকে ঘিরে ছিল না। তিনি পদার্থবিদ্যা ও রসায়ন পড়েছিলেন এবং রসায়নে ডক্টরেট অর্জন করেছিলেন।
Clara: She was Hungarian, born in 1909, and her original academic world wasn't languages at all. She studied physics and chemistry and earned a doctorate in chemistry.
পরে তিনি অনুবাদক এবং প্রথম দিকের সমকালীন দোভাষীদের একজন হয়ে ওঠেন। কর্মজীবনের শীর্ষে তিনি ১৬টি ভাষা নিয়ে পেশাগতভাবে কাজ করেছেন।
She later became a translator and one of the early simultaneous interpreters. At the height of her career, she worked professionally with 16 languages.
বেন: ষোলোটি ভাষা—প্রায় অবিশ্বাস্য শোনায়।
Ben: Sixteen sounds almost unbelievable.
ক্লারা: তা ঠিক, তবে এই সংখ্যাটি নিয়ে লোম্ব নিজেই খুব সতর্ক ছিলেন।
Clara: It does, but Lomb herself was careful about that number.
তিনি খোলাখুলিই বলতেন, ১৬টি ভাষার সবগুলোই তিনি একই স্তরে জানতেন না।
She openly said that she did not know all 16 languages at the same level.
There were languages such as Hungarian, Russian, English, French and German that she could use very freely. With some others she could translate or interpret after preparation. And there were languages she mainly worked with through written texts.
বেন: এই উত্তরটি আমার ইতিমধ্যেই সেই চেনা বহুভাষাবিদের গল্পের চেয়ে বেশি ভালো লাগছে, যেখানে দাবি করা হয় কেউ নাকি ত্রিশটি ভাষাই নিখুঁতভাবে বলতে পারেন।
Ben: I already like that answer more than the usual polyglot story where somebody supposedly speaks thirty languages perfectly.
ক্লারা: ঠিক তাই।
Clara: Exactly.
ভাষা শেখাকে জাদুতে পরিণত করার কোনো আগ্রহ তাঁর ছিল না।
She wasn't interested in turning language learning into magic.
বরং তাঁর লেখায় বারবার প্রায় উল্টো কথাটিই এসেছে। ভাষার জন্য স্বাভাবিক প্রতিভাবান হওয়ার ধারণাটিকে ঘিরে থাকা কিছু রহস্য তিনি দূর করতে চেয়েছিলেন।
In fact, one of the recurring themes in her writing was almost the opposite. She wanted to remove some of the mystery surrounding the idea of being naturally gifted at languages.
বেন: তিনি কি সেই মানুষদের একজন ছিলেন, যাঁরা শৈশব থেকেই অসাধারণভাবে ভাষা শিখে আসছেন?
Ben: Was she one of those people who had been learning languages brilliantly since childhood?
ক্লারা: না, আর সে কারণেই তাঁর গল্পটি এত আকর্ষণীয়।
Clara: No, and that's one reason her story is so interesting.
স্কুলে তিনি কয়েকটি ভাষা শিখেছিলেন, তবে নিজেকে কখনো অসাধারণ ভাষাশিক্ষার্থী হিসেবে বর্ণনা করেননি।
She had learned some languages at school, but she didn't describe herself as a remarkable language student.
তাঁর গুরুত্বসহকারে স্বাধীনভাবে ভাষা শেখার যাত্রা আসলে শুরু হয়েছিল প্রাপ্তবয়স্ক হওয়ার পর।
Her serious independent language-learning journey really began as an adult.
১৯৩৩ সালে তিনি চাকরি পাওয়ার সম্ভাবনা বাড়াতে চেয়েছিলেন, তাই নিজে নিজে ইংরেজি শেখা শুরু করেন।
In 1933 she wanted to improve her employment prospects, so she began teaching herself English.
বেন: কীভাবে?
Ben: How?
ক্লারা: একটি উপন্যাস দিয়ে।
Clara: With a novel.
আর সেটি শিক্ষার্থীদের জন্য বিশেষভাবে সহজ করে লেখা কোনো বই ছিল না।
And not a specially simplified learner book.
তিনি জন গলসওয়ার্দির একটি উপন্যাস নিয়ে নিবিড়ভাবে কাজ শুরু করেন।
She began working intensively with a novel by John Galsworthy.
শুরুতে তিনি খুব সামান্যই বুঝতেন। পরে তিনি লিখেছিলেন, এক সপ্তাহ পর লেখাটির মধ্যে দিয়ে মোটামুটি পথ খুঁজে নিতে শুরু করেছিলেন, মাসখানেক পর সেটি বুঝতে পারছিলেন এবং দুই মাস পর সেটি উপভোগ করছিলেন।
At first she understood very little. She later wrote that after a week she was beginning to sense her way through the text, after about a month she could understand it, and after two months she was enjoying it.
বেন: আপনি বর্তমানে কোন পাতায় আটকে আছেন, তার ওপর নির্ভর করে এটি অনুপ্রেরণাদায়ক বা ভীতিকর—দুটোর যেকোনোটি শোনাতে পারে।
Ben: That sounds either inspiring or terrifying, depending on what page you're currently stuck on.
ক্লারা: সম্ভবত দুটোই।
Clara: Probably both.
তবে এটি লোম্ব সম্পর্কে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কিছু জানায়।
But this tells us something important about Lomb.
আংশিক বোঝাপড়ার অস্বস্তি সহ্য করার মানসিকতা তাঁর ছিল।
She was willing to tolerate partial understanding.
কোনো লেখা উপকারী হয়ে ওঠার আগে তার প্রতিটি শব্দ জানতে হবে—এমনটা তিনি মনে করতেন না।
She didn't think you had to know every word before a text became useful.
বেন: স্কুলে আমাদের অনেকেই যেভাবে ভাষা শিখেছি, তার চেয়ে এটি বেশ আলাদা।
Ben: That's quite different from how many of us learned languages at school.
একটি অনুচ্ছেদ পড়লেন, প্রতিটি অজানা শব্দে থামলেন, অভিধানে খুঁজলেন, লিখে রাখলেন—আর অনুচ্ছেদের শেষে পৌঁছাতে পৌঁছাতে সেটি কী নিয়ে ছিল, তা-ই ভুলে গেলেন।
You read a paragraph, stop at every unknown word, look it up, write it down, and by the time you reach the end you've forgotten what the paragraph was about.
ক্লারা: ঠিক তাই।
Clara: Exactly.
লোম্ব অভিধান ব্যবহার করতেন। তিনি মোটেই অভিধানের বিরোধী ছিলেন না।
Lomb used dictionaries. She wasn't against them at all.
তবে অভিধান যেন তাঁর পড়াকে নিয়ন্ত্রণ না করে, সেটিই তিনি চাইতেন।
But she didn't want the dictionary to control the reading.
নতুন কোনো বই পড়ার সময় তিনি প্রায়ই প্রথমে প্রসঙ্গ থেকে অর্থ বোঝার চেষ্টা করতেন। দরকারি শব্দগুলো আলাদাভাবে না লিখে বাক্যসহ লিখে রাখতেন। পরে আবার পড়ার সময়ও যা বুঝতে পারতেন না, তার আরও বেশি অংশ অভিধানে খুঁজতেন।
When reading a new book, she often tried first to work out meaning from the context. She would record useful words together with sentences rather than as isolated items. Only on later readings would she look up more of what she still didn't understand.
বেন: অর্থাৎ গল্প আগে, আর সব শব্দের পূর্ণ জ্ঞান পরে।
Ben: So the story came first and complete vocabulary knowledge came later.
ক্লারা: এভাবে বলা যথার্থ।
Clara: That's a fair way to describe it.
আর কী পড়বেন, সেই নির্বাচন তাঁর কাছে অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ছিল।
And the choice of what to read mattered enormously to her.
তাঁর সবচেয়ে সহজ পরামর্শগুলোর একটি ছিল—এমন কিছু বেছে নিন, যা সত্যিই আপনার আগ্রহ জাগায়।
One of her simplest recommendations was to choose something that genuinely interests you.
গোয়েন্দা গল্প, কারিগরি লেখা, ম্যাগাজিন—যা-ই আপনাকে সামনে এগিয়ে যেতে টানে।
A detective story, a technical text, a magazine, whatever pulls you forward.
বেন: কথাটি প্রায় স্বতঃসিদ্ধই শোনায়।
Ben: That sounds almost obvious.
ক্লারা: এখন তা-ই শোনায়।
Clara: It does now.
তবে এর নিচে একটি বাস্তব উপলব্ধি রয়েছে।
But there's a practical insight underneath it.
বিদেশি ভাষার কঠিন লেখা পড়তে স্বাভাবিকভাবেই বাধা আসে। পরের পাতায় কী ঘটবে তা নিয়ে যদি আপনার কোনো আগ্রহ না থাকে, তাহলে থেমে যাওয়া খুবই সহজ।
A difficult foreign-language text creates friction. If you don't care what happens on the next page, it's very easy to stop.
আপনি সবটা না বুঝলেও কৌতূহল আপনাকে এগিয়ে যাওয়ার কারণ দেয়।
Curiosity gives you a reason to keep going even when your understanding is incomplete.
লোম্ব এ বিষয়ে খুব সরাসরি লিখেছেন। তাঁর মতে, ভাষা নিজেই যখন হতাশার কারণ হয়ে ওঠে, তখন সেই কঠিন মুহূর্তগুলো পার হতে আগ্রহই শিক্ষার্থীদের সাহায্য করে।
Lomb wrote very directly about this. Interest, in her view, was one of the forces that helped learners through those moments when the language itself became frustrating.
বেন: আর ইংরেজিই একমাত্র ভাষা ছিল না, যা তিনি এভাবে শিখেছিলেন।
Ben: And English wasn't the only language she learned that way.
ক্লারা: মোটেই না।
Clara: Far from it.
রুশ ভাষা আমাদের আরেকটি দারুণ উদাহরণ দেয়।
Russian gives us another great example.
১৯৪১ সালে লোম্ব রুশ ভাষা শেখার সিদ্ধান্ত নেন।
In 1941, Lomb decided to learn Russian.
পুরোনো বইয়ের একটি দোকানে তিনি দুই খণ্ডের একটি পুরোনো রুশ-ইংরেজি অভিধান খুঁজে পান। সেটি ১৮৬০ সালে প্রকাশিত হয়েছিল এবং দৃশ্যত বেশ শোচনীয় অবস্থায় ছিল।
She found an old two-volume Russian-English dictionary in a secondhand bookshop. It had been published in 1860 and was apparently in pretty terrible condition.
তিনি সেটি কিনে কাজ শুরু করে দেন।
She bought it and started working.
বেন: ১৯৪১ সালের হাঙ্গেরিতে রুশ ভাষা শেখা কি রাজনৈতিকভাবে বেশ ঝুঁকিপূর্ণ ছিল না?
Ben: Wasn't learning Russian in Hungary in 1941 politically rather awkward?
ক্লারা: অবশ্যই ছিল।
Clara: Very much so.
হাঙ্গেরি অক্ষশক্তির শিবিরে আরও গভীরভাবে জড়িয়ে পড়ছিল, তাই প্রকাশ্যে রুশ ভাষা পড়লে অনাকাঙ্ক্ষিত নজরদারির মুখে পড়তে হতো।
Hungary was moving deeper into the Axis camp, so openly studying Russian could attract unwanted attention.
লোম্ব তখনই লেখার মাধ্যমে শেখার একটি পদ্ধতি গড়ে তুলেছিলেন। আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে শেখার সুযোগ সীমিত থাকায় সেটি তাঁর কাজে এসেছিল।
Lomb had already developed a way of learning through texts, which became useful because formal opportunities were limited.
তিনি ধ্রুপদি রুশ সাহিত্য পড়ার চেষ্টা করেছিলেন, কিন্তু শুরুতে তা খুব কঠিন মনে হয়েছিল। এরপর অনেক সহজ একটি উপন্যাস খুঁজে পান এবং সেটি নিয়েই এগিয়ে যান।
She tried classic Russian literature but initially found it too difficult. Then she found a much easier novel and worked through that instead.
পরে যুদ্ধের সময়ও অত্যন্ত কঠিন পরিস্থিতির মধ্যে তিনি রুশ ভাষায় পড়া চালিয়ে গেছেন।
Later, during the war, she continued reading Russian even under extremely difficult circumstances.
বেন: অর্থাৎ এটি সুচিন্তিতভাবে তৈরি কোনো ভাষার কোর্স ছিল না।
Ben: So this wasn't a carefully designed language course.
ক্লারা: একেবারেই না।
Clara: Not remotely.
আর এটিও তাঁর জীবনের আরেকটি মূল বিষয়।
And that's another theme in her life.
যা পেতেন, তা-ই কাজে লাগাতেন।
She used what she could find.
বই, অভিধান, রেডিও, সংবাদপত্র, কথোপকথন, কারিগরি নথি।
Books, dictionaries, radio, newspapers, conversations, technical documents.
একবার তিনি বিদেশি ভাষাকে এমন একটি দুর্গের সঙ্গে তুলনা করেছিলেন, যেটিকে সব দিক থেকে আক্রমণ করা উচিত।
She once described a foreign language as something like a castle that should be attacked from every direction.
বেন: একেবারেই লোম্বসুলভ কথা।
Ben: That's very Lomb.
ক্লারা: নিঃসন্দেহে।
Clara: Very much so.
এটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ, কারণ তাঁর দর্শন কেবল “উপন্যাস পড়ুন এবং বাকি সবকিছু উপেক্ষা করুন”—এমন ছিল না।
And it matters because her philosophy wasn't simply "read novels and ignore everything else."
তিনি রেডিও শুনতেন, অভিধান ব্যবহার করতেন, শিক্ষক ও মাতৃভাষীদের সাহায্য নিতেন, ভাষার ধরন খেয়াল করতেন, লেখা অনুবাদ করতেন এবং সচেতনভাবে কথা বলার অনুশীলন করতেন।
She also listened to radio, used dictionaries, sought teachers and native speakers, studied patterns, translated texts and deliberately practised speaking.
তাঁর পদ্ধতি ছিল ব্যাপক।
Her approach was broad.
বেন: ব্যাকরণের ব্যাপারে তাঁর মত কী ছিল?
Ben: What about grammar?
তাঁর গল্পের প্রচলিত বর্ণনা হলো, তিনি মূলত ব্যাকরণ উপেক্ষা করতেন এবং প্রসঙ্গ থেকে স্বাভাবিকভাবেই সবকিছু শিখতেন।
The usual retelling of her story is that she basically ignored grammar and learned everything naturally from context.
ক্লারা: এটি অতিরিক্ত সরলীকরণ।
Clara: That's too simple.
শব্দের তালিকা মুখস্থ করা এবং ব্যাকরণের নিয়ম আত্মস্থ করার মধ্যেই ভাষা শেখার শুরু ও শেষ—এই ধারণা তাঁর পছন্দ ছিল না।
She disliked the idea that language learning should begin and end with memorising vocabulary lists and digesting grammar rules.
তিনি ভাষার ব্যবহার থেকেই বিভিন্ন ধরন আবিষ্কার করতে পছন্দ করতেন, তারপর যা দেখছেন তা বুঝতে ব্যাকরণের সাহায্য নিতেন।
She preferred discovering patterns through the language itself and then using grammar to help make sense of what she was seeing.
অর্থাৎ ব্যাকরণ অকেজো—এমনটা তিনি বলছিলেন না।
So she wasn't saying that grammar is useless.
তিনি শুধু গুরুত্বের ক্রম বদলে দিচ্ছিলেন।
She was changing the order of importance.
ভাষা আগে, বিশ্লেষণ তার সহায়ক।
Language first, analysis in support of it.
বেন: পার্থক্যটি বেশ গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বলে মনে হচ্ছে।
Ben: That feels like an important distinction.
ক্লারা: তা অবশ্যই।
Clara: It is.
আমাদের এটিও মনে রাখা উচিত, লোম্ব বহু বছর ধরে তাঁর নিজের ক্ষেত্রে যা কার্যকর হয়েছে, তা-ই বর্ণনা করছিলেন।
We should also remember that Lomb was describing what worked for her over many years.
তাঁর বইগুলো নিয়ন্ত্রিত বৈজ্ঞানিক পরীক্ষার ফল নয়।
Her books aren't controlled scientific experiments.
তাঁর কিছু ধারণা আজকের ভাষাশিক্ষক ও গবেষকদের আলোচনার সঙ্গে সহজেই মিলে যায়। অন্যগুলো একজন অত্যন্ত অভিজ্ঞ শিক্ষার্থীর ব্যক্তিগত পর্যবেক্ষণ।
Some of her ideas fit comfortably with things language teachers and researchers discuss today. Others are simply the observations of an exceptionally experienced learner.
তিনি সব সময় বাস্তব কিছু প্রশ্ন করেছেন—এটিই তাঁকে এত আকর্ষণীয় করে তোলে।
What makes her fascinating is that she kept asking practical questions.
কী আমার আগ্রহ ধরে রাখে?
What keeps me interested?
কী আমাকে কথা বলতে ভয় পাইয়ে দেয়?
What makes me afraid to speak?
এই ভাষাটিকে আমি কীভাবে আমার জীবনের অংশ করে নিতে পারি?
How can I fit this language into my life?
কোনো ব্যাখ্যার সাহায্য নেওয়ার আগে প্রসঙ্গ থেকে আমি কী শিখতে পারি?
What can I learn from context before reaching for an explanation?
বেন: আর এখান থেকেই আমরা তাঁর বিখ্যাত সমীকরণে আসি।
Ben: Which brings us to her famous equation.
ক্লারা: হ্যাঁ।
Clara: Yes.
শেষ পর্যন্ত লোম্ব ভাষা শেখায় সাফল্য সম্পর্কে তাঁর দৃষ্টিভঙ্গিকে ইচ্ছাকৃতভাবে একটি সহজ সূত্রে প্রকাশ করেছিলেন।
Lomb eventually expressed her view of language-learning success with a deliberately simple formula.
ব্যয় করা সময়ের সঙ্গে প্রেরণা যোগ করে, তারপর মানসিক সংকোচ দিয়ে ভাগ করলে ফল পাওয়া যায়।
Invested time plus motivation, divided by inhibition, gives the result.
বেন: একজন রসায়নবিদসুলভ কাজই বটে।
Ben: That's a very chemist-like thing to do.
ক্লারা: তা ঠিক।
Clara: It is.
আর তিনি খুব ভালোভাবেই জানতেন, মানুষের শেখার প্রক্রিয়াকে আক্ষরিক অর্থে কোনো সমীকরণে সীমিত করা যায় না।
And she knew perfectly well that human learning couldn't literally be reduced to an equation.
মূল বিষয় ছিল এই উপাদানগুলোর মধ্যকার সম্পর্ক।
The point was the relationship between those factors.
ভাষাটির সঙ্গে অর্থবহভাবে আরও বেশি সময় কাটান।
Spend more meaningful time with the language.
সেটি শেখার জন্য আরও শক্তিশালী কারণ রাখুন।
Have a stronger reason to learn it.
আর যে সংকোচ আপনাকে ভাষাটি সত্যিকারভাবে ব্যবহার করতে বাধা দেয়, তা কমান।
And reduce the inhibition that stops you from actually using it.
বেন: সংকোচ বলতে তিনি ঠিক কী বোঝাতেন?
Ben: What exactly did she mean by inhibition?
ক্লারা: এর একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অংশ ছিল ভুল করার ভয়।
Clara: One important part was fear of making mistakes.
অনুভূতিটি আপনার পরিচিত।
You know the feeling.
আপনি মোটামুটি জানেন কী বলতে চান, কিন্তু বাক্যটি ঠিক কি না তা নিশ্চিত নন, তাই কিছুই বলেন না।
You know roughly what you want to say, but you're not sure the sentence is correct, so you say nothing.
লোম্বের কাছে এই দ্বিধা বড় বাধা হয়ে উঠতে পারত।
For Lomb, that hesitation could become a serious obstacle.
তিনি বিশ্বাস করতেন, ত্রুটিপূর্ণ যোগাযোগেরও মূল্য আছে।
She believed that imperfect communication still had value.
বেন: তাঁর বিখ্যাত কথাটি সেখান থেকেই এসেছে।
Ben: That's where her famous line comes from.
ক্লারা: হ্যাঁ।
Clara: Yes.
তিনি বলতে পছন্দ করতেন, ভাষাই একমাত্র বিষয়, যা খারাপভাবে জানলেও জানার মূল্য আছে।
She liked to say that languages were the only thing worth knowing even poorly.
আর এই কথার পেছনের ধারণাটি উদ্ধৃতিটির চেয়েও বেশি আকর্ষণীয়।
And the idea behind that line is more interesting than the quote itself.
আপনার ইতালীয় ভাষা নিখুঁত না হলেও সেটি যদি মিলানগামী ট্রেন কোনটি তা জিজ্ঞেস করতে সাহায্য করে, তাহলে ভাষাটি ইতিমধ্যেই কার্যকর কিছু করেছে।
If your Italian is imperfect but it helps you ask which train goes to Milan, the language has already done something useful.
ব্যাকরণগতভাবে ত্রুটিপূর্ণ একটি বাক্যও দুই মানুষের মধ্যে সংযোগ তৈরি করতে পারে।
A grammatically imperfect sentence can still connect two people.
বেন: তার মানে এই নয় যে ভুলের কোনো গুরুত্ব নেই।
Ben: Which doesn't mean mistakes don't matter.
ক্লারা: ঠিক তাই।
Clara: Exactly.
লোম্ব চাইতেন তাঁর ভুল সংশোধন করা হোক। যেসব শিক্ষক ও বক্তা তাঁর ভুল শুধরে দিতে পারতেন, তাঁদের তিনি মূল্য দিতেন।
Lomb wanted corrections. She valued teachers and speakers who could correct her.
উদ্দেশ্য ভুল উদ্যাপন করা ছিল না।
The point wasn't to celebrate mistakes.
উদ্দেশ্য ছিল ভুলের ভয়কে যোগাযোগের পথে বাধা হয়ে উঠতে না দেওয়া।
It was not to let the fear of them prevent communication.
এটি সম্পূর্ণ আলাদা একটি ধারণা।
That's a very different idea.
বেন: অর্থাৎ আত্মবিশ্বাস মানে নিজেকে সঠিক বলে ভান করা নয়।
Ben: So confidence wasn't pretending you were correct.
ক্লারা: ঠিক।
Clara: Right.
এর অর্থ চেষ্টা করতে প্রস্তুত থাকা, নিজের ভুল আবিষ্কার করা, তা সংশোধন করা এবং এগিয়ে চলা।
It was being willing to try, discover that you were wrong, adjust, and continue.
বেন: সমীকরণে আপনি প্রেরণার কথাও বললেন। তিনি কি সেই ধরনের প্রেরণা বোঝাতেন, যেখানে দামি একটি কোর্স কিনেছেন বলে প্রতি রাতে নিজেকে পড়তে বাধ্য করেন?
Ben: You mentioned motivation in the equation too. Did she mean the kind of motivation where you make yourself study every night because you've bought an expensive course?
ক্লারা: ঠিক তা নয়।
Clara: Not quite.
লোম্বের কাছে প্রেরণা প্রায়ই খুব বাস্তব ও নির্দিষ্ট ছিল।
For Lomb, motivation was often very concrete.
তিনি আংশিকভাবে চাকরির প্রয়োজনেই ইংরেজি শিখেছিলেন।
She learned English partly because she needed work.
তিনি জাপানি ভাষা শেখা শুরু করেছিলেন, কারণ একটি জাপানি রাসায়নিক পেটেন্ট অনুবাদের বেশ উচ্চাভিলাষী দায়িত্ব নিয়েছিলেন। সেই সময় হাঙ্গেরিতে জাপানি ভাষার শিক্ষক বা পাঠ্যবই খুঁজে পাওয়া অত্যন্ত কঠিন ছিল।
She began Japanese because she had taken on the rather ambitious task of translating a Japanese chemical patent at a time when finding a Japanese teacher or textbook in Hungary was extremely difficult.
তাঁর কৌতূহলও গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ছিল।
Her curiosity mattered too.
কোনো ভাষার ধাঁধা সমাধান করতে তিনি সত্যিই আনন্দ পেতেন।
She genuinely enjoyed solving the puzzle of a language.
বেন: অর্থাৎ প্রেরণা মানেই সারা জীবনের কোনো বিশাল স্বপ্ন নয়।
Ben: So motivation wasn't necessarily some grand lifelong dream.
ক্লারা: ঠিক তাই।
Clara: Exactly.
এটি হতে পারে পেশাগত প্রয়োজন, কৌতূহল, এমন কোনো বই যা আপনি বুঝতে চান, এমন কোনো মানুষ যার সঙ্গে কথা বলতে চান, অথবা নিছক কিছু বুঝে ফেলার আনন্দ।
It could be professional necessity, curiosity, a book you wanted to understand, a person you wanted to speak with, or simply the pleasure of figuring something out.
আর ভাষা শেখাকে সম্পূর্ণ আলাদা একটি কর্তব্যে পরিণত না করে তিনি জীবনের বাকি অংশের সঙ্গে যুক্ত করার চেষ্টা করতেন।
And she tried to connect language learning with the rest of life rather than making it a completely separate duty.
বেন: এখান থেকেই তাঁর সঙ্গে সম্পর্কিত আরেকটি পরামর্শ আসে—প্রতিদিন ভাষাটির সংস্পর্শে থাকা।
Ben: Which leads into another piece of advice associated with her. Daily contact.
ক্লারা: হ্যাঁ।
Clara: Yes.
লোম্বের বাস্তব পরামর্শগুলোর একটি ছিল প্রতিদিন ভাষাটির সঙ্গে কিছু সময় কাটানো।
One of Lomb's practical suggestions was to spend some time with the language every day.
সময় কম থাকলে অন্তত দশ মিনিট নিজের সঙ্গে কথা বলার চেষ্টা করতে বলতেন।
If time was short, she suggested at least trying a ten-minute monologue.
তবে এর অর্থ এই নয় যে দশ মিনিটই বৈজ্ঞানিকভাবে নিখুঁত কোনো মাত্রা।
That's quite different from claiming that ten minutes is some scientifically perfect dose.
বেন: অর্থাৎ কোনো জাদুকরি টাইমার নেই।
Ben: So no magical timer.
ক্লারা: না।
Clara: No.
তাঁর মূল বক্তব্য ছিল ধারাবাহিকতা।
Her larger point was continuity.
দীর্ঘ সময় ধরে পড়ার সুযোগ পাচ্ছেন না বলে ভাষাটি থেকে দীর্ঘদিন দূরে থাকবেন না।
Don't disappear from the language for long periods just because you can't fit in a serious study session.
প্রয়োজনে কাজটি বদলে নিন।
Change the activity if necessary.
কিছু পড়ুন।
Read something.
কিছু শুনুন।
Listen.
মনে মনে ছোট একটি স্বগতোক্তি তৈরি করুন।
Think through a little monologue.
অভিধান উল্টে দেখুন।
Look through a dictionary.
ভাষাটির সঙ্গে সম্পর্কটি জীবন্ত রাখুন।
Keep the relationship with the language alive.
বেন: তিনি কি সত্যিই নিজের সঙ্গে কথা বলতেন?
Ben: Did she really talk to herself?
ক্লারা: তিনি যাকে স্বগতোক্তি বা মনের ভেতরের স্বগতোক্তি বলতেন, তার অনুশীলন দৃঢ়ভাবে সুপারিশ করতেন।
Clara: She strongly recommended what she called monologues or inner monologues.
তাঁর মতে, কথা বলার মতো কেউ আশপাশে না থাকলেও শিক্ষার্থীদের সেই ভাষায় চিন্তা গঠনের অনুশীলন করা উচিত।
She thought learners should practise constructing thoughts in the language even when there was nobody around to talk to.
খুব বাস্তব একটি কারণে এটি উপকারী।
That's useful for a very practical reason.
কথোপকথনের সময় প্রতিটি বাক্য গঠনের জন্য আপনি অসীম সময় পান না।
Conversation doesn't give you unlimited time to build every sentence.
নিজে নিজে অনুশীলন করলে বুঝতে পারবেন, কোন বিষয়গুলো প্রকাশ করতে পারেন এবং কোথায় আটকে যাচ্ছেন।
Practising on your own lets you notice what you can express and where you get stuck.
বেন: অর্থাৎ গতকাল আমি কী করেছি, তা কীভাবে বোঝাতে হয় সে সম্পর্কে আমার যে কোনো ধারণাই নেই—এটি আবিষ্কারের জন্য সত্যিকারের কথোপকথন পর্যন্ত অপেক্ষা করতে হবে না।
Ben: So rather than waiting for a real conversation to discover that I have absolutely no idea how to explain what I did yesterday.
ক্লারা: একদম ঠিক।
Clara: Precisely.
নিজের রান্নাঘরেই নিরাপদে সমস্যাটি আবিষ্কার করতে পারেন।
You can discover that problem safely in your kitchen.
তারপর প্রয়োজনীয় ভাষা খুঁজে নিতে পারেন।
And then you can find the missing language.
বেন: এই সবকিছুর আড়ম্বরহীনতার মধ্যে বেশ একটা আকর্ষণ আছে।
Ben: There's something appealingly unglamorous about all this.
একটি বই পড়ুন।
Read a book.
সাহায্য হলে অভিধান ব্যবহার করুন।
Use a dictionary when it helps.
রেডিও শুনুন।
Listen to the radio.
নিজের সঙ্গে কথা বলুন।
Talk to yourself.
চালিয়ে যান।
Keep going.
ক্লারা: এ কারণেই লোম্বকে আমার এত ভালো লাগে।
Clara: That's one of the reasons I like Lomb so much.
তাঁর অর্জন ছিল অসাধারণ, কিন্তু তাঁর পরামর্শ সাধারণত তেমন অসাধারণ কিছু ছিল না।
Her achievements were extraordinary, but her advice usually wasn't.
তিনি শিক্ষার্থীদের এমন কোনো গোপন কৌশল দেননি, যা ভাষা শেখাকে অনায়াস করে তুলবে।
She didn't give learners a secret technique that would make a language effortless.
তিনি সময়, কৌতূহল, অধ্যবসায় এবং অসম্পূর্ণ জ্ঞান নিয়েও কাজ করার মানসিকতার ওপর জোর দিয়েছিলেন।
She emphasized time, curiosity, persistence and willingness to work with incomplete knowledge.
বেন: আর মাঝে মাঝে নিজেকে একটু বোকা দেখাতে রাজি থাকার ওপরও।
Ben: And willingness to look slightly foolish sometimes.
ক্লারা: অবশ্যই।
Clara: Absolutely.
তবে আরেকটি বিষয়ে আমাদের সতর্ক থাকা উচিত বলে আমার মনে হয়।
But there's one more thing I think we should be careful about.
লোম্বের জীবনকে এমন প্রমাণ হিসেবে দেখানো লোভনীয় যে সঠিক পদ্ধতি ব্যবহার করলেই যে কেউ ষোলোটি ভাষা শিখতে পারেন।
It's tempting to turn Lomb's life into proof that anybody can learn sixteen languages if they just use the right method.
আসলে শিক্ষাটি তা নয়।
That's not really the lesson.
বেন: কারণ তিনি নিঃসন্দেহে ব্যতিক্রমী মানুষ ছিলেন।
Ben: Because she was clearly an unusual person.
ক্লারা: অত্যন্ত ব্যতিক্রমী।
Clara: Very unusual.
তিনি ছিলেন অসাধারণ অধ্যবসায়ী ও বুদ্ধিবৃত্তিকভাবে কৌতূহলী এবং কয়েক দশক ধরে পেশাগতভাবে ভাষা নিয়ে কাজ করেছেন।
She was extraordinarily persistent, intellectually curious and spent decades working professionally with languages.
একজন অসাধারণ প্রাপ্তবয়স্ক শিক্ষার্থী কী অর্জন করেছিলেন, তাঁর জীবন সেটিই দেখায়।
Her life demonstrates what one remarkable adult learner achieved.
এটি বলে না যে সবাই একই গন্তব্যে পৌঁছাবেন।
It doesn't tell us that everyone will reach the same destination.
তবে এটি সেই ধারণাকে চ্যালেঞ্জ করে যে গুরুত্বসহকারে ভাষা শেখা শুধু তাঁদেরই কাজ, যাঁরা শৈশব থেকেই এতে স্পষ্ট প্রতিভার পরিচয় দিয়েছেন।
What it does challenge is the idea that serious language learning belongs only to people who were obviously gifted at it from childhood.
বেন: বিশেষ করে তিনি যেহেতু প্রাপ্তবয়স্ক হওয়ার পরই এর অনেকটা গড়ে তুলতে শুরু করেছিলেন।
Ben: Especially because she started building much of this as an adult.
ক্লারা: ঠিক তাই।
Clara: Exactly.
আর তিনি কয়েক দশক ধরে শিখে গেছেন।
And she continued learning for decades.
সম্ভবত তাঁর গল্পের এই অংশটিই আমার কাছে সবচেয়ে বেশি উৎসাহব্যঞ্জক।
That may be the part of her story I find most encouraging.
ভাষা শেখাকে তিনি শেষ করে ফেলার মতো কোনো পর্ব হিসেবে দেখেননি।
She didn't treat language learning as a phase you complete.
সারা জীবনই এটি তাঁর কাজের অংশ হয়ে ছিল।
It remained something she did throughout her life.
বেন: কাতো লোম্ব যদি এখন আমাদের সঙ্গে এখানে বসে থাকতেন, ছয় মাস ধরে পড়েও নিজেকে হতাশাজনকভাবে ধীর মনে করছেন—এমন একজন শিক্ষার্থীকে তিনি কী বলতেন বলে আপনার ধারণা?
Ben: If Kató Lomb were sitting here with us, what do you think she'd tell a learner who's been studying for six months and feels hopelessly slow?
ক্লারা: তাঁর হয়ে কথা বলা আমার পক্ষে অবশ্যই সম্ভব নয়।
Clara: I obviously can't speak for her.
তবে তাঁর লেখার ভিত্তিতে আমার ধারণা, তিনি বেশ কিছু বাস্তব প্রশ্ন করতেন।
But based on her writing, I suspect she'd ask some very practical questions.
আপনি কি ভাষাটির সঙ্গে যথেষ্ট সময় কাটাচ্ছেন?
Are you spending enough time with the language?
সত্যিই আপনার আগ্রহ জাগায়—এমন বিষয় নিয়ে কি কাজ করছেন?
Are you working with things that genuinely interest you?
আপনি কি খুব তাড়াতাড়ি সবকিছু বুঝে ফেলার প্রত্যাশা করছেন?
Are you expecting yourself to understand everything too soon?
আর ভুল করার এতটাই ভয় পাচ্ছেন কি যে আপনার প্রয়োজনীয় অনুশীলনই এড়িয়ে যাচ্ছেন?
And are you so afraid of making mistakes that you're avoiding the very practice you need?
বেন: তালিকাটি বেশ অস্বস্তিকর।
Ben: That's a rather uncomfortable checklist.
ক্লারা: উপকারী তালিকাগুলো প্রায়ই এমনই হয়।
Clara: The useful ones often are.
বেন: সাবলীলতা অর্জনের আরেকটি ইন্টারনেটি রেসিপিতে পরিণত না করে তাঁর পদ্ধতিকে আপনি কীভাবে সংক্ষেপে তুলে ধরবেন?
Ben: So how would you summarize her approach without turning it into another internet recipe for fluency?
ক্লারা: কৌতূহলী থাকুন।
Clara: Stay curious.
ভাষাটির সঙ্গে সত্যিকারের সময় কাটান।
Spend real time with the language.
আপনি সত্যিই বুঝতে চান—এমন বিষয় পড়ুন।
Read things you actually want to understand.
প্রসঙ্গ কাজে লাগান, তবে প্রয়োজন হলে অভিধান ও ব্যাখ্যারও সাহায্য নিন।
Use context, but use dictionaries and explanations when you need them.
নিয়মিত ভাষাটির কাছে ফিরে আসুন।
Return to the language regularly.
নিখুঁত বোধ করার জন্য অপেক্ষা না করে ভাষাটি ব্যবহারের অনুশীলন করুন।
Practise producing it instead of waiting until you feel perfect.
আর অসম্পূর্ণ ভাষাকে অকেজো ভাষা মনে করবেন না।
And don't confuse imperfect language with useless language.
বেন: “এক আজব কৌশলে বহুভাষাবিদ শিখলেন ষোলোটি ভাষা”—এর চেয়ে এটি অনেক ভালো।
Ben: That's considerably better than "polyglot learns sixteen languages with one weird trick."
ক্লারা: অনেক ভালো।
Clara: Much better.
আর মানুষটির নিজের ভাবনারও অনেক কাছাকাছি।
And much closer to the woman herself.
বেন: ক্লারা, আপনি কেন তাঁর ভক্ত, তা বুঝতে পারছি।
Ben: Clara, I can see why you're a fan.
ক্লারা: শুরুতেই তো আপনাকে সাবধান করেছিলাম।
Clara: I warned you at the beginning.
বেন: কাতো লোম্ব ছিলেন রসায়নবিদ, অনুবাদক, দোভাষী এবং আজীবন ভাষাশিক্ষার্থী। তবে সম্ভবত তাঁর সবচেয়ে মূল্যবান উত্তরাধিকারটি আরও সহজ।
Ben: Kató Lomb was a chemist, translator, interpreter and lifelong language learner. But perhaps her most useful legacy is much simpler.
ভাষা শেখার শুরু প্রতিভা বা নিখুঁততা দিয়ে হতেই হবে না।
Languages don't have to begin with talent or perfection.
এর শুরু হতে পারে কৌতূহল এবং এগিয়ে যাওয়ার মানসিকতা দিয়ে।
They can begin with curiosity and the willingness to keep going.
ক্লারা: আমার মনে হয়, কথাটি তাঁর ভালো লাগত।
Clara: I think she would have liked that.
বেন: ধন্যবাদ, ক্লারা।
Ben: Clara, thank you.
ক্লারা: আনন্দের সঙ্গে।
Clara: My pleasure.
