Ben: Welcome back to Vocafy Language in Real Life. I'm Ben, here again with Clara. Today we're looking at a language spoken across a huge part of the world, from the Atlantic coast of North Africa to the Arabian Peninsula and beyond.
అరబిక్.
Arabic.
కానీ క్లారా గారు, ఎవరైనా “అరబిక్ మాట్లాడతారు” అని చెప్పినంత మాత్రాన వారు ఏ అరబిక్ మాట్లాడతారో మనకు స్పష్టంగా తెలియదు కదా.
But Clara, saying someone "speaks Arabic" doesn't always tell us exactly what Arabic they speak.
క్లారా గారు: ప్రారంభించడానికి అదే సరైన అంశం.
Clara: That's the perfect place to start.
అరబిక్లో అభ్యాసకులకు అసాధారణంగా అనిపించే ఒక లక్షణం ఉంది. విస్తృతంగా అందరూ పంచుకునే ఒక ప్రామాణిక రూపం ఉన్నప్పటికీ, రోజువారీ మాటతీరు ఒక ప్రాంతం నుంచి మరో ప్రాంతానికి చాలా మారవచ్చు.
Arabic has something unusual for learners. There is a widely shared standard form, but everyday speech can vary greatly from one place to another.
మొరాకోలో జరిగే సంభాషణ, ఈజిప్ట్, లెబనాన్ లేదా ఇరాక్లో జరిగే సంభాషణకంటే చాలా భిన్నంగా వినిపించవచ్చు. అయినప్పటికీ, వారందరూ తాము మాట్లాడేది అరబిక్ అనే చెబుతారు.
A conversation in Morocco might sound very different from one in Egypt, Lebanon or Iraq, even though the speakers may all describe what they speak as Arabic.
బెన్ గారు: అయితే అరబిక్ నిజంగా ఒకే భాషా, లేక భాషల సమూహమా?
Ben: So is Arabic actually one language or a group of languages?
క్లారా గారు: ఇక్కడే విషయం ఆసక్తికరంగా మారుతుంది.
Clara: That's where things become interesting.
దీనికి ఒక సరళమైన సమాధానం లేదు. ఎందుకంటే “భాష”, “మాండలికం” అనేవి పూర్తిగా భాషాశాస్త్రానికి సంబంధించిన గుర్తింపులు మాత్రమే కావు. చరిత్ర, సంస్కృతి, అస్తిత్వ భావన కూడా ముఖ్యమే.
There isn't one simple answer, because "language" and "dialect" aren't purely linguistic labels. History, culture and identity matter too.
చాలామంది తాము అరబిక్ మాట్లాడేవారిగానే భావిస్తారు. అంతేకాక, ఆ ప్రాంతాన్ని అనుసంధానించే ఉమ్మడి లిఖిత, అధికారిక భాష కూడా ఉంది.
Most speakers see themselves as speaking Arabic, and there is a shared written and formal language connecting the region.
అదే సమయంలో, రోజువారీ మాట్లాడే భాషారూపాల మధ్య ఉచ్చారణ, పదజాలం, వ్యాకరణంలో గణనీయమైన తేడాలు ఉండవచ్చు.
At the same time, the everyday spoken varieties can differ substantially in pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar.
భాషాశాస్త్రవేత్తలు ఈ పరిస్థితిని తరచూ ‘డైగ్లోసియా’ అనే పదంతో వివరిస్తారు.
Linguists often discuss this situation using the term diglossia.
బెన్ గారు: దాని వెనుక ఉన్న భావనకంటే ఎంతో క్లిష్టంగా వినిపించే పదాల్లో ఇది కూడా ఒకటి.
Ben: That's one of those words that sounds much more complicated than the idea behind it.
ఇక్కడ డైగ్లోసియా అంటే ఏమిటి?
What does diglossia mean here?
క్లారా గారు: సరళంగా చెప్పాలంటే, ఒక భాషలోని వేర్వేరు రూపాలను వేర్వేరు అవసరాలకు ఉపయోగించే పరిస్థితి.
Clara: In the simplest version, it means that different forms of a language are used for different purposes.
అరబిక్లో ముఖ్యంగా రచన, అధికారిక సంభాషణ కోసం ఉపయోగించే ఒక ప్రామాణిక రూపం ఉంది. అయితే ప్రజలు సాధారణంగా ఇంట్లో ఒక స్థానిక భాషారూపాన్ని మాట్లాడుతూ పెరుగుతారు.
Arabic has a standard form used especially for writing and formal communication, while people usually grow up speaking a local variety at home.
నేటి ప్రామాణిక రూపాన్ని సాధారణంగా ఆధునిక ప్రామాణిక అరబిక్ లేదా MSA అంటారు.
The standard form today is usually called Modern Standard Arabic, or MSA.
అయితే ఇక్కడ ఒక ముఖ్యమైన విషయం ఉంది.
But there's an important detail.
ఒక పెట్టెపై MSA అని, మరో పెట్టెపై మాండలికం అని రాసి, అరబిక్ ప్రపంచాన్ని రెండుగా చక్కగా విభజించలేం.
It isn't really a neat world with two boxes, one labelled MSA and the other labelled dialect.
బెన్ గారు: ఎందుకు?
Ben: Why not?
క్లారా గారు: ఎందుకంటే నిజ జీవితంలోని మాటతీరు అంత క్రమబద్ధంగా ఉండదు.
Clara: Because real speech is much messier.
పరిస్థితిని బట్టి ప్రజలు మరింత అధికారిక భాష నుంచి సంభాషణాత్మక భాషకు, తిరిగి మరోవైపుకు మారగలరు. తమ స్థానిక మాటతీరులో ప్రామాణిక భాషా లక్షణాలను కలపవచ్చు.
People can move between more formal and more conversational language depending on the situation. They may mix standard features with elements of their local speech.
విశ్వవిద్యాలయ చర్చ, టెలివిజన్ ఇంటర్వ్యూ లేదా రాజకీయ వాదన స్నేహితుల మధ్య సంభాషణకంటే మరింత అధికారికంగా వినిపించవచ్చు. అయినా అది పూర్తిగా పాఠ్యపుస్తకాల్లోని MSAగా మారాల్సిన అవసరం లేదు.
A university discussion, a television interview or a political debate might sound more formal than a conversation between friends, without necessarily becoming pure textbook MSA.
కాబట్టి దీనిని ఒక నిరంతర పరిధిలా ఊహించడం మంచిది.
So it's often better to imagine a spectrum.
ఒక చివర అత్యంత అధికారికమైన ప్రామాణిక అరబిక్ ఉంటుంది. మరో చివర పూర్తిగా స్థానికమైన రోజువారీ మాటతీరు ఉంటుంది. ప్రజలు అవసరాన్ని బట్టి ఈ రెండింటి మధ్య కదులుతారు.
At one end you have highly formal Standard Arabic. At the other you have very local everyday speech. And people can move around between them.
బెన్ గారు: ముందుగా అధికారిక రూపం నుంచి ప్రారంభిద్దాం.
Ben: Let's start with the formal end.
ఆధునిక ప్రామాణిక అరబిక్ అంటే అసలు ఏమిటి?
What exactly is Modern Standard Arabic?
క్లారా గారు: MSA అనేది క్లాసికల్ అరబిక్ను ప్రధానంగా ఆధారం చేసుకుని ప్రమాణీకరించిన అరబిక్ ఆధునిక రూపం.
Clara: MSA is the modern standardized form of Arabic closely based on Classical Arabic.
చాలా అధికారిక రచనల్లో అభ్యాసకులకు ఎదురయ్యే భాష ఇదే. పుస్తకాలు, వార్తాపత్రికలు, అధికారిక పత్రాలు, అనేక విద్యా వనరుల్లో మీరు దీన్ని చూస్తారు.
It is the language learners encounter in most formal writing. You'll see it in books, newspapers, official documents and much educational material.
వార్తా ప్రసారాలు, ముందుగా సిద్ధం చేసిన ప్రసంగాలు, డాక్యుమెంటరీలు, ఇతర అధికారిక సందర్భాల్లో కూడా దీని రూపాలు మీకు వినిపిస్తాయి.
You'll also hear forms of it in news broadcasts, prepared speeches, documentaries and other formal settings.
అరబిక్ మాట్లాడే ప్రపంచమంతటికీ విస్తృతంగా పంచుకునే ఒక లిఖిత భాషను అందించడం దీని ప్రధాన బలాల్లో ఒకటి.
One of its great strengths is that it gives the Arabic-speaking world a broadly shared written language.
బెన్ గారు: అంటే మొరాకోలోని ఒక వ్యక్తి, ఒమాన్లోని మరొక వ్యక్తి ఒకే వార్తాపత్రిక కథనాన్ని చదవగలరన్నమాట.
Ben: So someone in Morocco and someone in Oman could read the same newspaper article.
క్లారా గారు: అవును. వారిద్దరికీ ప్రామాణిక అరబిక్పై మంచి పట్టు ఉంటే అది సాధ్యమే.
Clara: Exactly, assuming both have a good command of Standard Arabic.
అయితే వారు అల్పాహారం చేస్తూ సాధారణంగా అదే విధంగా మాట్లాడతారని దీని అర్థం కాదు.
But that doesn't mean they normally speak that way over breakfast.
పిల్లలు సాధారణంగా తమ కుటుంబం, సమాజం ఉపయోగించే అరబిక్ రూపాన్ని మాట్లాడుతూ పెరుగుతారు. పాఠశాల, పఠనం, మీడియా, అధికారిక జీవితం ద్వారా ప్రామాణిక అరబిక్కు ఎక్కువ ప్రాముఖ్యత ఏర్పడుతుంది.
Children typically grow up speaking the Arabic variety of their family and community. Standard Arabic becomes much more important through school, reading, media and formal life.
బెన్ గారు: అంటే MSA సాధారణంగా పిల్లలు తమ తల్లిదండ్రుల నుంచి మొదట నేర్చుకునే భాష కాదన్నమాట.
Ben: So MSA isn't normally the language a child first learns from their parents.
క్లారా గారు: అవును.
Clara: Right.
అభ్యాసకులకు అరబిక్ అసాధారణంగా అనిపించడానికి ఇది కూడా ఒక కారణం.
That's one reason Arabic can feel unusual to learners.
మీరు ఇంగ్లీష్ నేర్చుకుంటున్నారని ఊహించండి. కానీ పుస్తకాలు, వార్తలు, పాఠశాలలో ఉపయోగించే భాషకు, ప్రజలు తమ కుటుంబాలతో సహజంగా మాట్లాడే భాషకు స్పష్టమైన తేడా ఉందని మీకు తెలుస్తుంది.
Imagine learning English, but discovering that the language of books, news and school is noticeably different from the language people naturally use with their families.
ఈ పోలిక పూర్తిగా సరిపోదు. అయినా ఆ రెండు రూపాల మధ్య ఎంత దూరం ఉండవచ్చో అర్థం చేసుకోవడానికి ఇది సహాయపడుతుంది.
The comparison isn't perfect, but it gives you a sense of the distance involved.
బెన్ గారు: అరబిక్ మాట్లాడే ప్రపంచంలోని వేర్వేరు ప్రాంతాల మధ్య ఈ దూరం ఎంత ఎక్కువగా ఉండవచ్చు?
Ben: And how large can that distance become between different parts of the Arabic-speaking world?
క్లారా గారు: చాలా ఎక్కువగానే ఉండవచ్చు.
Clara: Quite large.
ఈజిప్షియన్, లెవాంటైన్, గల్ఫ్, ఇరాకీ, మఘ్రెబీ అరబిక్ వంటి విస్తృత సమూహాలు ఉన్నాయి. వాటిలో కూడా మరెన్నో ప్రాంతీయ, స్థానిక భేదాలు ఉన్నాయి.
There are broad groups such as Egyptian, Levantine, Gulf, Iraqi and Maghrebi Arabic, and within those there are many more regional and local differences.
పక్కపక్క ప్రాంతాల భాషారూపాలను మాట్లాడేవారు సాధారణంగా ఒకరినొకరు సులభంగా అర్థం చేసుకోగలరు. దూర ప్రాంతాల రూపాలను అర్థం చేసుకోవడం మాత్రం చాలా కష్టంగా ఉండవచ్చు.
Neighbouring varieties are often relatively easy for speakers to understand, while varieties from distant regions can be much harder.
అయితే భౌగోళిక దూరం మాత్రమే దీనిని నిర్ణయించదు.
But geography isn't the only factor.
ఆ భాషారూపం ఎంతగా పరిచయమైందన్నది కూడా ముఖ్యం.
Exposure matters too.
మీరు టెలివిజన్, సంగీతం లేదా ఆన్లైన్ మీడియాలో ఒక నిర్దిష్ట భాషారూపాన్ని ఏళ్ల తరబడి వింటూ ఉంటే, భౌగోళిక దూరాన్ని బట్టి ఊహించినదానికంటే దాన్ని మరింత సులభంగా అర్థం చేసుకోవచ్చు.
If you've spent years hearing a particular variety in television, music or online media, you may understand it much better than geographical distance alone would suggest.
బెన్ గారు: ఇప్పుడు మనం ఈజిప్ట్ గురించి మాట్లాడాలి.
Ben: Which brings us to Egypt.
ఈ కథ మొదటి రూపంలో బహుశా ఈజిప్షియన్ అరబిక్ను అరబ్ ప్రపంచపు అనధికారిక ఉమ్మడి భాషగా పేర్కొని ఉండవచ్చు.
The original version of this story would probably call Egyptian Arabic the unofficial common language of the Arab world.
అలా చెప్పడం అతిశయోక్తి అవుతుందా?
Is that going too far?
క్లారా గారు: అవును. కానీ దాని వెనుక ఒక ముఖ్యమైన నిజం ఉంది.
Clara: Yes, but there's an important truth behind it.
ఇరవయ్యో శతాబ్దంలో అరబిక్ ప్రజాదరణ పొందిన సంస్కృతిపై ఈజిప్ట్ అపారమైన ప్రభావం చూపింది.
Egypt had an enormous influence on Arabic-language popular culture during the twentieth century.
ఈజిప్షియన్ చలనచిత్రాలు, పాటలు, రేడియో కార్యక్రమాలు, టెలివిజన్ ప్రసారాలు ప్రాంతమంతటా వ్యాపించాయి. ఫలితంగా, స్వయంగా ఈజిప్షియన్ అరబిక్ మాట్లాడని కోట్లాది మందికి కూడా అది సుపరిచితమైంది.
Egyptian films, songs, radio programmes and television travelled throughout the region. As a result, Egyptian Arabic became familiar to huge numbers of people who didn't speak it themselves.
బెన్ గారు: అంటే ఎవరైనా ఈజిప్షియన్ సినిమాలు చూస్తూ పెరిగినందువల్ల ఈజిప్షియన్ అరబిక్ను కొంతవరకు అర్థం చేసుకోవచ్చన్నమాట.
Ben: So someone might understand Egyptian Arabic partly because they grew up watching Egyptian movies.
క్లారా గారు: అవును, సరిగ్గా అదే.
Clara: Exactly.
వేర్వేరు భాషారూపాల మధ్య పరస్పర అవగాహనను మీడియా ఎలా మార్చగలదో చూపించే గొప్ప ఉదాహరణ ఇది.
It's a great example of how media can change mutual understanding between language varieties.
ఈజిప్షియన్ అరబిక్ ఇతర దేశాల స్థానిక మాటతీరును భర్తీ చేయలేదు. అలాగే వేర్వేరు ప్రాంతాల ప్రజలు కలిసినప్పుడు వారు స్వయంచాలకంగా ఈజిప్షియన్ అరబిక్కు మారరు.
Egyptian Arabic didn't replace the local speech of other countries, and people from different regions don't automatically switch to Egyptian when they meet.
అయితే దశాబ్దాల ప్రజాదరణ పొందిన సంస్కృతి కారణంగా, ఇది అత్యంత విస్తృతంగా గుర్తుపట్టగల మాట్లాడే అరబిక్ రూపాల్లో ఒకటిగా మారింది.
But decades of popular culture made it one of the most widely recognised spoken forms of Arabic.
బెన్ గారు: ఇద్దరు అరబిక్ మాట్లాడేవారు ఒకరి స్థానిక మాటతీరును మరొకరు సులభంగా అర్థం చేసుకోలేకపోతే ఏం చేస్తారు?
Ben: What happens when two Arabic speakers don't easily understand each other's local speech?
క్లారా గారు: వారు తమ మాటతీరును పరిస్థితికి అనుగుణంగా మార్చుకుంటారు.
Clara: They adapt.
అత్యంత స్థానికమైన పదబంధాలను ఉపయోగించకుండా ఉండవచ్చు. ఎదుటివారు గుర్తించగలరని భావించే పదజాలాన్ని ఉపయోగించవచ్చు. విస్తృతంగా అర్థమయ్యే రూపాలవైపు మారవచ్చు లేదా ప్రామాణిక అరబిక్లోని అంశాలను చేర్చవచ్చు.
They might avoid strongly local expressions. They may use vocabulary they expect the other person to recognise. They can move toward more widely understood forms or bring in elements of Standard Arabic.
వారు ఎంచుకునే వ్యూహం మాట్లాడేవారు, వారి నేపథ్యం, పరిస్థితిపై ఆధారపడి ఉంటుంది.
The exact strategy depends on the speakers, their backgrounds and the situation.
“MSAకు ఎదురుగా మాండలికం” అనే సరళమైన చిత్రం నిజ జీవితాన్ని పూర్తిగా వివరించలేకపోవడానికి ఇది మరో కారణం.
That's another reason the simple picture of "MSA versus dialect" doesn't quite capture real life.
బెన్ గారు: దాదాపు ప్రతి అభ్యాసకుడూ వెంటనే గమనించే అంశాన్ని ఇప్పుడు చూద్దాం.
Ben: Let's look at something that almost every learner notices immediately.
అదే లిపి.
The writing system.
క్లారా గారు: అరబిక్ను కుడి నుంచి ఎడమకు రాస్తారు. అక్షరాలు ఒక పదంలో ఎక్కడ కనిపిస్తాయన్నదాన్ని బట్టి వాటి ఆకారం మారుతుంది.
Clara: Arabic is written from right to left, and its letters change shape depending on where they appear in a word.
మొదట్లో ఇది కష్టంగా కనిపించవచ్చు. కానీ కనిపించినంత క్లిష్టంగా కాకుండా, ఈ వ్యవస్థ చాలా క్రమబద్ధంగా ఉంటుంది.
That can look difficult at first, but the system is much more regular than it may appear.
చాలా అక్షరాలు తమ పక్కనున్న అక్షరాలతో కలుస్తాయి. అందువల్ల లిఖిత అరబిక్కు ప్రవాహంలాంటి రూపం వస్తుంది; దాన్ని చూసిన వెంటనే గుర్తుపట్టవచ్చు.
Most letters connect to the letters around them, so written Arabic has that flowing appearance that makes it instantly recognisable.
అభ్యాసకులను ఆశ్చర్యపరిచే మరో లక్షణం కూడా ఉంది.
There is another feature that surprises learners too.
సాధారణ పాఠ్యాల్లో చిన్న అచ్చు ధ్వనులను తరచూ రాయరు.
Short vowels are often not written in ordinary texts.
బెన్ గారు: అయితే ఒక పదాన్ని ఎలా చదవాలో ప్రజలకు ఎలా తెలుస్తుంది?
Ben: So how do people know what the word says?
క్లారా గారు: ప్రధానంగా పదజాలం, వ్యాకరణం, సందర్భం ద్వారా తెలుస్తుంది.
Clara: Mostly from vocabulary, grammar and context.
అవసరమైనప్పుడు అదనపు అచ్చు గుర్తులను చేర్చవచ్చు. పిల్లల పుస్తకాలు, మత గ్రంథాలు, అభ్యాసకుల కోసం రూపొందించిన వనరుల్లో ఇవి ప్రత్యేకంగా ఉపయోగపడతాయి.
Extra vowel marks can be added when needed, and they're especially useful in children's books, religious texts and materials for learners.
అయితే అనుభవం ఉన్న పాఠకులకు సాధారణ పాఠ్యాన్ని చదవడానికి అవి సాధారణంగా అవసరం ఉండవు.
But experienced readers usually don't need them for ordinary text.
బెన్ గారు: అది కష్టంగా అనిపిస్తోంది.
Ben: That sounds difficult.
క్లారా గారు: మొదట్లో కష్టంగానే ఉండవచ్చు.
Clara: At first it can be.
అయితే పదజాలాన్ని అర్థం చేసుకోవడానికి అరబిక్ అభ్యాసకులకు మరో శక్తివంతమైన సూచనను ఇస్తుంది. అదే మూలాలు, నమూనాల వ్యవస్థ.
But Arabic also gives learners another powerful clue to vocabulary, and that's its system of roots and patterns.
అనేక అరబిక్ పదాలు మూడు హల్లులతో కూడిన ఒక మూలం చుట్టూ నిర్మితమవుతాయి.
Many Arabic words are built around a root containing three consonants.
రచనతో సంబంధం ఉన్న K-T-B దీనికి ప్రసిద్ధ ఉదాహరణ.
A classic example is K-T-B, which is associated with writing.
ఈ పద కుటుంబం నుంచి పుస్తకం అనే అర్థంలో ‘కితాబ్’, రచయిత అనే అర్థంలో ‘కాతిబ్’, కార్యాలయం లేదా బల్ల అనే అర్థంలో ‘మక్తబ్’, గ్రంథాలయం లేదా పుస్తకాల దుకాణం అనే అర్థంలో ‘మక్తబా’ వంటి పదాలు వస్తాయి.
From this family you get words such as kitaab for book, kaatib for writer, maktab for office or desk, and maktaba for library or bookshop.
బెన్ గారు: అరబిక్లో నాకు అత్యంత ఇష్టమైన లక్షణాల్లో ఇది ఒకటి.
Ben: That's one of my favourite features of Arabic.
మీరు K-T-Bని గుర్తించిన తర్వాత ఆ పదాలు ఒకదానితో మరొకదానికి అసలు సంబంధమే లేనట్లు కనిపించవు.
Once you recognise K-T-B, those words stop looking completely unrelated.
క్లారా గారు: అవును, సరిగ్గా అదే.
Clara: Exactly.
అయితే ప్రతి పదాన్నీ స్వయంచాలకంగా ఊహించడానికి ఉపయోగపడే సంకేత విధానంలా దీనిని భావించకూడదు.
You shouldn't think of it as a code that lets you automatically guess every word.
ఏ భాషా అంత సులభంగా సహకరించదు.
Language is never quite that cooperative.
కానీ మూలాలు అరబిక్లోని విస్తారమైన పదజాలాన్ని పద కుటుంబాలుగా క్రమబద్ధీకరించడంలో సహాయపడతాయి.
But roots help organise a huge amount of Arabic vocabulary into families.
తెలియని పదాల్లో పరిచయమున్న మూలాలను అభ్యాసకులు గుర్తించడం ప్రారంభించిన తర్వాత, ఆ భాష అంత యాదృచ్ఛికంగా అనిపించదు.
Once learners start recognising familiar roots inside unfamiliar words, the language can begin to feel much less random.
బెన్ గారు: ఇక ధ్వనుల విషయం కూడా ఉంది.
Ben: And then there are the sounds.
అరబిక్ ఉచ్చరించడం కష్టమనే పేరు ఉంది.
Arabic has a reputation for being difficult to pronounce.
క్లారా గారు: ఇంగ్లీష్ మాట్లాడేవారికి అలవాటు లేని అనేక ధ్వనులు ఇందులో ఉన్నాయి.
Clara: It does contain several sounds that English speakers aren't used to.
అరబిక్లోని ‘అయిన్’ అనే అక్షరం సూచించే ధ్వని దీనికి ప్రసిద్ధ ఉదాహరణ.
One famous example is the sound represented by the Arabic letter ayn.
అలాగే, అభ్యాసకులకు మొదట్లో చాలా ఒకేలా వినిపించినప్పటికీ, మాతృభాషగా అరబిక్ మాట్లాడేవారికి వేర్వేరు పదాలను గుర్తించడంలో సహాయపడే హల్లుల మధ్య భేదాలు కూడా ఉన్నాయి.
Arabic also has consonant contrasts that can initially sound very similar to learners but distinguish words for native speakers.
ఒక అసాధారణ ధ్వనిని ఒక్కసారి పలకడం మాత్రమే సవాలు కాదు.
The challenge isn't simply producing an unusual sound once.
ముందుగా ఆ తేడాను నమ్మకంగా వినగలగాలి. తర్వాత పదాలు, వాక్యాల్లో దాన్ని సహజంగా పలకడం నేర్చుకోవాలి.
You have to learn to hear the difference reliably and then produce it naturally inside words and sentences.
బెన్ గారు: ప్రాంతీయ భాషారూపాల మధ్య కూడా ఉచ్చారణ మారుతుందా?
Ben: Does pronunciation vary between the regional varieties too?
క్లారా గారు: చాలా ఎక్కువగా మారుతుంది.
Clara: Very much so.
ఒకే లిఖిత అక్షరాన్ని అరబిక్ మాట్లాడే ప్రపంచంలోని వేర్వేరు ప్రాంతాల్లో వేర్వేరుగా ఉచ్చరించవచ్చు.
The same written letter can be pronounced differently in different parts of the Arabic-speaking world.
తాము వింటున్నది ఏ భాషారూపమో అభ్యాసకులు తెలుసుకోవడానికి ఇది మరో మంచి కారణం.
That gives learners another good reason to know which variety they're listening to.
మీరు నేర్చుకోవాల్సిన ఒకే ఒక్క సార్వత్రిక రోజువారీ అరబిక్ యాస అంటూ లేదు.
There isn't just one universal everyday Arabic accent waiting to be mastered.
బెన్ గారు: ఇప్పుడు ఈ ఎపిసోడ్లోని అతిపెద్ద ఆచరణాత్మక ప్రశ్నకు వచ్చాం.
Ben: And that brings us to probably the biggest practical question in the entire episode.
నేను ఈ రోజే అరబిక్ నేర్చుకోవాలని నిర్ణయించుకుంటే, నిజానికి ఏది నేర్చుకోవాలి?
If I decide today that I want to learn Arabic, what should I actually learn?
MSAనా, లేక మాట్లాడే ప్రాంతీయ రూపాల్లో ఒకదాన్నా?
MSA or one of the spoken varieties?
క్లారా గారు: దీనికి ఉత్తమ సమాధానం విసుగు పుట్టించేంత సరళంగా ఉంటుంది.
Clara: The best answer is frustratingly simple.
మీరు ఏం చేయాలనుకుంటున్నారనే దానిపై అది ఆధారపడి ఉంటుంది.
It depends on what you want to do.
మీరు వార్తాపత్రికలు, పుస్తకాలు చదవాలనుకుంటే, అధికారిక వార్తలను అనుసరించాలనుకుంటే, లిఖిత అరబిక్తో పని చేయాలనుకుంటే లేదా అధికారిక సందర్భాల్లో వేర్వేరు దేశాల వారితో సంభాషించాలనుకుంటే MSA ఎంతో విలువైనది.
If you want to read newspapers and books, follow formal news, work with written Arabic or communicate across countries in formal contexts, MSA is extremely valuable.
మీరు జోర్డాన్కు వెళ్లి నివసించబోతూ, కేఫేలు, దుకాణాలు, రోజువారీ జీవితంలో ప్రజలతో మాట్లాడడమే మీ ప్రధాన లక్ష్యమైతే, మాట్లాడే లెవాంటైన్ అరబిక్ వెంటనే ఉపయోగపడుతుంది.
If you're moving to Jordan and your main goal is talking to people in cafés, shops and everyday life, spoken Levantine Arabic will be immediately useful.
మీరు కైరోలో నివసిస్తుంటే, రోజువారీ జీవితానికి ఈజిప్షియన్ అరబిక్ సహజమైన ఎంపిక అవుతుంది.
If you're living in Cairo, Egyptian Arabic becomes the obvious everyday choice.
బెన్ గారు: అంటే ప్రతి సంభాషణనూ స్వయంచాలకంగా తెరిచే సర్వసాధారణ తాళంచెవి MSA కాదన్నమాట.
Ben: So MSA isn't the master key that automatically unlocks every conversation.
క్లారా గారు: అవును, సరిగ్గా అదే.
Clara: Exactly.
అరబిక్లో అందరూ పంచుకునే, అత్యంత ముఖ్యమైన భాగాన్ని—ప్రత్యేకంగా లిఖిత, అధికారిక భాషను—అర్థం చేసుకోవడానికి ఇది మీకు అవకాశం ఇస్తుంది.
It gives you access to a shared and enormously important part of Arabic, especially the written and formal language.
అయితే MSA తెలిసినంత మాత్రాన ప్రతి దేశంలోని వేగవంతమైన రోజువారీ సంభాషణను మీరు స్వయంచాలకంగా అర్థం చేసుకోగలరని కాదు.
But knowing MSA doesn't automatically mean you'll understand rapid everyday conversation in every country.
దీనికి విరుద్ధమైన పరిస్థితి కూడా నిజమే.
The reverse is also true.
ఒక స్థానిక భాషారూపాన్ని మాత్రమే నేర్చుకున్న వ్యక్తి ఆ ప్రాంతంలో చాలా బాగా సంభాషించగలిగినా, అధికారిక రచనను అర్థం చేసుకోవడం కష్టంగా అనిపించవచ్చు.
Someone who learns only one local variety may communicate very well in that region while still finding formal writing difficult.
బెన్ గారు: అభ్యాసకులు రెండింటిలో ఒకదాన్ని ఎంచుకుని, మరొకదాన్ని పట్టించుకోకుండా ఉండాలా?
Ben: Do learners have to choose one and ignore the other?
క్లారా గారు: అసలు అవసరం లేదు.
Clara: Not at all.
చాలామంది పట్టుదల గల అభ్యాసకులకు, ఒక మాట్లాడే భాషారూపంతో పాటు కొంత MSA నేర్చుకోవడం ఎంతో ప్రయోజనకరం.
For many serious learners, learning some MSA alongside one spoken variety makes a lot of sense.
MSA ద్వారా లిపి, పఠనం, విస్తృతమైన అధికారిక పదజాలాన్ని నేర్చుకుంటూనే, మీ జీవితానికి అత్యంత సంబంధం ఉన్న భాషారూపంలో వినడం, మాట్లాడటం వంటి నైపుణ్యాలను క్రమంగా పెంచుకోవచ్చు.
You might learn the script, reading and broader formal vocabulary through MSA while gradually building your listening and speaking skills in the variety most relevant to your life.
మీ లక్ష్యాలను బట్టి రెండింటిలో దేనికి ఎంత ప్రాధాన్యం ఇవ్వాలన్నది మారవచ్చు.
How much attention you give each one can change with your goals.
బెన్ గారు: ప్రతి ఒక్కరూ రెండేళ్లు MSA నేర్చుకుని, ఆ తర్వాతే ప్రజలు నిజంగా ఎలా మాట్లాడతారో నేర్చుకోవడం ప్రారంభించాలని చెప్పడం కంటే ఇది వాస్తవానికి దగ్గరగా ఉంది.
Ben: That feels more realistic than saying everyone should spend two years on MSA and only then start learning how people actually talk.
క్లారా గారు: చాలా ఎక్కువగా వాస్తవానికి దగ్గరగా ఉంది.
Clara: Much more realistic.
ప్రతి అభ్యాసకుడికీ సరిపోయే ఒకే సరైన మార్గం లేదు.
There isn't one correct route for every learner.
అరబిక్ సాహిత్యాన్ని చదివే వ్యక్తి అవసరాలు, బీరూట్కు వెళ్లి నివసించబోయే వ్యక్తి అవసరాలకంటే భిన్నంగా ఉంటాయి. అలాగే బంధువులతో మాట్లాడాలని మాత్రమే కోరుకునే వ్యక్తి అవసరాలు కూడా వీరిద్దరి అవసరాలకంటే వేరుగా ఉంటాయి.
Someone studying Arabic literature has different needs from someone moving to Beirut, and both have different needs from someone who simply wants to speak with relatives.
వేర్వేరు అవసరాలకు ఉపయోగపడే వేర్వేరు రూపాలు అరబిక్లో ఉన్నాయని మొదటి నుంచే అర్థం చేసుకోవడం ముఖ్యం.
The important thing is to understand from the beginning that Arabic has different forms serving different purposes.
అప్పుడు ఈ వైవిధ్యం తర్వాత మిమ్మల్ని ఆశ్చర్యపరిచే అంశంగా కాకుండా, ముందుగానే ప్రణాళిక వేసుకోగల అంశంగా మారుతుంది.
Then the variation becomes something you can plan for rather than something that surprises you later.
బెన్ గారు: దీనితో మళ్లీ మన శీర్షిక దగ్గరకు వచ్చాం.
Ben: Which brings us back to our title.
ఒకే భాష, వెయ్యి గొంతులు.
One language, a thousand voices.
క్లారా గారు: అవును, సరిగ్గా అదే.
Clara: Exactly.
“వెయ్యి” అనేది కవితాత్మక ప్రయోగమే. కానీ దాని వెనుక ఉన్న భావన ముఖ్యమైనది.
The "thousand" is poetic, of course, but the idea matters.
అరబిక్కు శక్తిమంతమైన ఉమ్మడి సంప్రదాయం, విస్తృతంగా ఉపయోగించే ప్రామాణిక రూపం ఉన్నాయి. అదే సమయంలో, రోజువారీ మాటతీరు దాన్ని ఉపయోగించే ప్రజల విస్తారమైన భౌగోళిక పరిధిని, వైవిధ్యాన్ని ప్రతిబింబిస్తుంది.
Arabic has a powerful shared tradition and a widely used standard form, while everyday speech reflects the enormous geography and diversity of the people who use it.
ఈ రెండూ ఒకదానిని మరొకటి కొట్టివేయవు.
Those two things don't cancel each other out.
రెండూ అరబిక్లో భాగమే.
They're both part of Arabic.
బెన్ గారు: అరబిక్ నిజంగా ఒకే భాషా లేదా రహస్యంగా అనేక భాషలా అనే ప్రశ్న అంత ఆసక్తికరమైనది కాకపోవచ్చు.
Ben: So perhaps the interesting question isn't whether Arabic is really one language or secretly many languages.
క్లారా గారు: అది నిజమేనని నేనూ భావిస్తున్నాను.
Clara: I think that's right.
అభ్యాసకులకు మరింత ఉపయోగకరమైన ప్రశ్న ఏమిటంటే, అరబిక్లోని వేర్వేరు రూపాలు ఒకదానితో మరొకటి ఎలా అనుసంధానమై ఉన్నాయి?
For a learner, the more useful question is how its different forms connect.
వార్తాపత్రికలో మీరు చదివే భాష, అధికారిక ప్రసంగంలో వినే భాష, ఈజిప్షియన్ చలనచిత్రంలో చూసే భాష, అమ్మాన్లో సంభాషణ కోసం ఉపయోగించే భాష ఒకేలా వినిపించకపోవచ్చు.
The language you read in a newspaper, hear in a formal speech, watch in an Egyptian film and use in a conversation in Amman may not sound the same.
అయితే అవి పూర్తిగా వేరుపడిన ప్రపంచాలు కూడా కావు.
But they're not isolated worlds either.
అరబిక్ నేర్చుకోవడమంటే ఈ విస్తారమైన భాషా ప్రపంచంలో ఎలా ముందుకు సాగాలో క్రమంగా నేర్చుకోవడమే.
Learning Arabic means gradually learning how to move through that landscape.
బెన్ గారు: అప్పుడు ఈ సంక్లిష్టత ఒక సమస్యలా కాకుండా, భాషను ఆసక్తికరంగా మార్చే లక్షణాల్లో ఒకటిగా కనిపించడం మొదలవుతుంది.
Ben: And suddenly the complexity starts looking less like a problem and more like part of what makes the language interesting.
క్లారా గారు: అవును, సరిగ్గా అదే.
Clara: Exactly.
మీరు ప్రతి భాషారూపాన్నీ నేర్చుకోవాల్సిన అవసరం లేదు.
You don't need to learn every variety.
మీరు అరబిక్ ఎందుకు నేర్చుకుంటున్నారో తెలుసుకోవాలి, ప్రారంభించడానికి ఉపయోగకరమైన రూపాన్ని ఎంచుకోవాలి, ముందుకు సాగుతున్న కొద్దీ భాష వేర్వేరు దిశల్లో మీకు విస్తరిస్తుందని అర్థం చేసుకోవాలి.
You need to know why you're learning Arabic, choose a useful place to begin, and understand that the language will open up in different directions as you go.
బెన్ గారు: ప్రతిచోటా పనిచేసే ఒక అద్భుతమైన అరబిక్ రూపం కోసం వెతకడం కంటే ఇది ఎంతో మెరుగైన సమాధానం అనిపిస్తోంది.
Ben: I think that's a much better answer than looking for one magical version of Arabic that works everywhere.
దీన్ని లోతుగా అర్థం చేసుకోవడంలో మాకు సహాయపడినందుకు ధన్యవాదాలు, క్లారా గారు.
Clara, thanks for helping us unpack it.
క్లారా గారు: సంతోషం, బెన్ గారు.
Clara: My pleasure, Ben.
బెన్ గారు: మా కార్యక్రమాన్ని విన్న ప్రతి ఒక్కరికీ ధన్యవాదాలు. Vocafy ‘నిజ జీవితంలో భాష’ కార్యక్రమంలో మళ్లీ కలుద్దాం.
Ben: And thanks to everyone listening. We'll see you next time on Vocafy Language in Real Life.
