Ben: Welcome back to Vocafy Unpacked. I'm Ben, and I'm joined by Clara. Today we're talking about babies. They learn to speak without textbooks, vocabulary apps or grammar lessons. It's hard not to wonder: could we do the same?
Clara: There's plenty to learn from watching them. But babies are developing their first language while discovering the world around them. Adults already have language, knowledge and learning strategies. We don't need to start over as babies to learn another language.
బెన్ గారు: అయినా, బయటి నుంచి చూస్తే అది దాదాపు ఎలాంటి శ్రమా లేకుండా జరుగుతున్నట్లు కనిపిస్తుంది.
Ben: Still, from the outside, it looks almost effortless.
Clara: We see the first word and celebrate it. What we don't always notice is everything leading up to it: months of listening, making sounds, watching people and joining in everyday exchanges. And language development continues for years after those first sentences.
బెన్ గారు: అయితే నేర్చుకోవడం నిజంగా ఎప్పుడు మొదలవుతుంది?
Ben: So when does the learning actually begin?
క్లారా గారు: తొలి మాటకు ఎంతో ముందే. పసిపిల్లలు గొంతు స్వరాలకు, మాటల లయలకు అలవాటు పడతారు. తాము ఆ పదాలను పలకలేకపోయినా, మొదటి ఏడాదిలోనే పరిచయమైన కొన్ని పదాలను అర్థం చేసుకుంటారని పరిశోధనలు చెబుతున్నాయి.
Clara: Well before the first word. Babies become familiar with voices and speech patterns, and research shows that some understanding of familiar words is already present during the first year, before they can say those words themselves.
బెన్ గారు: దాన్ని “నిశ్శబ్ద దశ” అంటారని విన్నాను. అది సరైన వర్ణనేనా?
Ben: I've heard that called a “silent period.” Is that a useful description?
క్లారా గారు: ఆ పేరు తప్పుదారి పట్టించవచ్చు. ఇంకా పదాలు పలకని శిశువు కూడా ఊ-ఆ వంటి శబ్దాలు చేస్తూ, బుడిబుడి మాటలు పలుకుతూ, ఎవరివైపో చూస్తూ లేదా సైగతో స్పందిస్తూ ఉండవచ్చు. అప్పటికే ఎంతో సంభాషణ జరుగుతోంది.
Clara: It can be misleading. A baby who isn't saying words yet may still be cooing, babbling, looking towards someone or responding with a gesture. There's already a lot of communication happening.
బెన్ గారు: అంటే పదాలు రాకముందే వారు సంభాషణలో భాగమవుతున్నారు.
Ben: They're part of the conversation before they have the words.
క్లారా గారు: సరిగ్గా అదే. ఒక శిశువు శబ్దం చేస్తే, తల్లిదండ్రుల్లో ఒకరు స్పందిస్తున్నారని ఊహించండి. తర్వాత శిశువు నుంచి మరో శబ్దం వస్తుంది. ఇలాంటి చిన్న చిన్న పరస్పర స్పందనలతో ఎదుటివారికి ప్రతిస్పందించే అనుభవం కలుగుతుంది.
Clara: Exactly. Imagine a baby making a sound and a parent answering. Then the baby makes another sound. Those little exchanges give them experience of responding to another person.
బెన్ గారు: అంటే పెద్దవారు మాట్లాడటానికి ప్రయత్నించే ముందు చాలాకాలం కేవలం వింటూ ఉండాలా?
Ben: Does that mean adults should spend a long time listening before trying to speak?
Clara: Listening deserves plenty of attention, but there's no need to impose a long waiting period on yourself. You can listen and try simple responses alongside it. A greeting, a short answer, a question you actually need. You don't have to wait until you can say everything.
బెన్ గారు: బుడిబుడి శబ్దాల గురించి మాట్లాడుకుందాం. ఆ “బా-బా-బా”, “డా-డా-డా” శబ్దాల సమయంలో ఏం జరుగుతోంది?
Ben: Let's talk about babbling. What's happening with all those “ba-ba-ba” and “da-da-da” sounds?
క్లారా గారు: తమ గొంతు, నోటితో ఎలాంటి శబ్దాలు చేయగలరో పసిపిల్లలు అన్వేషిస్తారు. కాలక్రమంలో ఆ శబ్దాలు మాటల్లా వినిపించడం మొదలవుతుంది. ఇతరుల నుంచి వచ్చే స్పందనలు ఆ శబ్దాల ఆటకు ఒక రూపు ఇవ్వడంలో సహాయపడతాయి.
Clara: Babies are exploring what they can do with their voices and mouths. Over time, their sounds become more speech-like. And the responses they get from other people can help shape that vocal play.
బెన్ గారు: పసిపిల్లల బుడిబుడి శబ్దాలు అన్ని చోట్లా ఒకేలా వినిపిస్తాయా?
Ben: Does babbling sound the same everywhere?
క్లారా గారు: భాషలన్నింటిలోనూ కొన్ని పోలికలు ఉంటాయి, ముఖ్యంగా పదే పదే వినిపించే శబ్ద భాగాల్లో. కానీ అవి పూర్తిగా ఒకేలా ఉండవు. స్పష్టమైన పదాలు రాకముందే, శిశువు చుట్టూ వినిపించే భాషకు సంబంధించిన సూక్ష్మ తేడాలను పరిశోధకులు గుర్తించారు.
Clara: There are similarities across languages, especially in the kinds of repeated syllables you hear. But it isn't identical. Researchers have found subtle differences related to the language around the baby, even before clear words appear.
బెన్ గారు: అంటే తరచూ వినిపించే శబ్దాలు అప్పటికే తమ ముద్ర వేస్తున్నాయన్నమాట.
Ben: So the familiar sounds are already leaving a mark.
క్లారా గారు: అవును, క్రమంగా. ఫలానా రోజున ఒక్కసారిగా ఆన్ అయ్యే స్విచ్లాంటి విషయం కాదు. వినడం, మాట శబ్దాలు అభివృద్ధి చెందడం, ఇతరులతో సంభాషించడం—ఇవన్నీ ఒకదానితో ఒకటి కలిసే సాగుతాయి.
Clara: Yes, gradually. It isn't a switch that flips on a particular day. Listening, vocal development and interaction overlap.
బెన్ గారు: తర్వాత తొలి పదాలు వస్తాయి. ఆ మొదటి పదజాలంలో సాధారణంగా ఎలాంటివి ఉంటాయి?
Ben: Then come the first words. What tends to make it into that early vocabulary?
Clara: Often familiar people, objects, actions and routines. Things like a parent’s name, “more,” or “bye-bye.” The exact words differ across children and languages, but they're often connected to something happening in the child's life.
బెన్ గారు: ఉదాహరణకు, ఎవరైనా మీకు చెప్పులు వేస్తున్నప్పుడు “చెప్పులు” అనే మాట వినడం లాగా.
Ben: Like hearing “shoes” when someone's putting your shoes on.
క్లారా గారు: అవును. ఆ సందర్భం పదం అర్థం చేసుకోవడానికి ఆధారాలు ఇస్తుంది. అదే పదం వేర్వేరు రోజుల్లో, వేర్వేరు చెప్పుల సందర్భంలో, బహుశా వేర్వేరు వ్యక్తుల నుంచి మళ్లీ మళ్లీ వినిపిస్తుంది.
Clara: Right. The situation gives clues to the meaning. And that word comes back on different days, with different shoes, perhaps spoken by different people.
బెన్ గారు: ఇది పెద్దవారికీ ఉపయోగకరంగానే అనిపిస్తోంది.
Ben: That sounds useful for adults too.
Clara: It is a useful principle to borrow. When you learn an expression, connect it to a situation. If you save “Could you give me a hand?”, keep an example that makes its meaning clear. Then try using it for something you might actually ask.
బెన్ గారు: అయితే పదజాల జాబితాతో మొదలుపెట్టడం మంచిది కాదా?
Ben: So is a vocabulary list a bad starting point?
Clara: Not at all. A list can help you organise and review useful language. You can include common phrases, example sentences and audio. Then look for those expressions in other material and practise using them yourself.
బెన్ గారు: పదజాలం ఒక్కసారిగా విస్తరించే ప్రసిద్ధ దశ మాటేమిటి? ప్రతి చిన్నారి ప్రతి వస్తువుకీ ఒక పేరు ఉందని అకస్మాత్తుగా గ్రహిస్తారా?
Ben: What about the famous vocabulary explosion? Does every toddler suddenly realise that everything has a name?
క్లారా గారు: కొంతమంది పిల్లల్లో పదాలు నేర్చుకునే వేగం స్పష్టంగా పెరుగుతుంది. మరికొందరిలో పెరుగుదల క్రమంగా ఉంటుంది. ఒక్క ఆకస్మిక ఆవిష్కరణే దీనంతటికీ కారణమని చెప్పడం మరీ సరళమైన వివరణ. అందరు పిల్లలూ ఒకే సమయక్రమాన్ని అనుసరించరు.
Clara: Some children do show a noticeable acceleration in word learning. For others, growth is more gradual. The idea of one sudden discovery explaining it all is too neat. There isn't a single timetable that describes every child.
బెన్ గారు: చివరికి వారు పదాలను కలిపి చెప్పడం మొదలుపెడతారు.
Ben: And eventually they start putting words together.
Clara: Yes. Early combinations can be short, like “more milk” or “Daddy gone.” But short doesn't mean there's no grammar. The words are beginning to express relationships: wanting more of something, or saying that someone has left.
బెన్ గారు: నాకు ఇప్పటికీ ఇష్టమైన ఉదాహరణ “I goed.” అది తప్పే; కానీ అలా ఎందుకు చెప్పారో అర్థమవుతుంది.
Ben: My favourite example is still “I goed.” It's wrong, but you can see how it makes sense.
క్లారా గారు: సరిగ్గా అదే. పిల్లలు “walked” లేదా “played” వంటి తమకు తెలిసిన నమూనాను, వేరే రీతిలో మారే పదానికి వర్తింపజేస్తున్నారు. దీన్ని అతి నియమీకరణ (overregularisation) అంటారు. అంతకు ముందు “went” అని సరిగ్గా చెప్పి కూడా ఉండవచ్చు.
Clara: Exactly. The child is extending a familiar pattern—like “walked” or “played”—to a word that works differently. That's called overregularisation. They may even have said “went” correctly before.
బెన్ గారు: అంటే ఒక తప్పు జరిగిందని వారి అభ్యాసం వెనక్కి వెళ్లిందని తప్పనిసరిగా అనుకోనక్కర్లేదు.
Ben: So a mistake doesn't necessarily mean they've gone backwards.
Clara: Right. It can reveal something about the patterns they're developing. For an adult learner, the practical message is to be willing to try, then pay attention to feedback. You can accept a mistake without deciding to keep it.
బెన్ గారు: పసిపిల్లలు వ్యాకరణ వివరణలు ఉపయోగించరు కాబట్టి మనం వాటిని వదులుకోవాల్సిన అవసరం లేదు కదా?
Ben: And we don't have to give up grammar explanations just because babies don't use them?
Clara: Definitely not. Adults can ask questions, compare examples, read explanations and deliberately practise something difficult. Those are useful resources. If a short explanation helps you understand a pattern, use it.
బెన్ గారు: అయితే ఒక సాధారణ అభ్యాస వారంలో పసిపిల్లల నుంచి మీరు నిజంగా ఏ పద్ధతులను తీసుకోవచ్చు?
Ben: So what would you actually borrow from babies for an ordinary week of learning?
Clara: Make room for language regularly. Connect it to things you understand and care about. Return to useful words in different situations. And take part—respond, ask, try something, and learn from what happens.
బెన్ గారు: Vocafyలో అది ఆచరణలో ఎలా కనిపిస్తుంది?
Ben: What might that look like in Vocafy?
Clara: You could create a Voca set for an everyday situation, with useful phrases and example sentences. Listen to it, pause to recall an expression, and use some of that language in practice with the tutor. Later, you might meet it again in a story or video.
బెన్ గారు: భాషను మీ రోజులో భాగం చేసుకోవడానికి సులభంగా పాటించగల మార్గం.
Ben: A manageable way to bring language into your day.
క్లారా గారు: అవును. దాన్ని అర్థం చేసుకుని ఉపయోగించడానికి మళ్లీ మళ్లీ లభించే అవకాశాల్లోనే అసలు విలువ ఉంది. పెద్దవారిగా మీకు తెలిసిన విషయాలన్నింటినీ పూర్తిగా ఉపయోగించుకుంటూనే, పిల్లల నుంచి స్ఫూర్తి పొందవచ్చు.
Clara: Yes. The value is in those repeated opportunities to understand and use it. You can take inspiration from children while making full use of what you know as an adult.
బెన్ గారు: క్లారా గారు, ధన్యవాదాలు. అలాగే వింటున్న మీ అందరికీ ధన్యవాదాలు. తదుపరి Vocafy అన్ప్యాక్డ్లో మళ్లీ కలుద్దాం.
Ben: Clara, thank you. And thanks to everyone listening. See you next time on Vocafy Unpacked.
