Spanish expressions mark topic changes and returns to earlier points. Two coworkers move between a shared trip, work, and daily plans using tú. The cards pair short conversational signals with more structured ways to name or revisit a topic.

Mga kard ng Voca

1.
por cierto
by the way

By the way, Ana, have you requested time off for our trip yet?
Introduces a side topic that need not connect closely to the previous one.
2.
hablando de eso
speaking of that

Speaking of that, how did it go with your boss?
'Eso' points back to something just mentioned, so the new topic stays connected.
3.
cambiando de tema
changing the subject

Changing the subject, do you want to grab something to eat with me after work?
Signals a deliberate move to an unrelated topic; it can sound abrupt without a friendly tone.
4.
en cuanto a algo
as for something

As for the trip, I still don't know how much I can spend.
Keep 'a' before the topic. Before 'el', it becomes 'al'.
5.
ya que mencionas eso
now that you mention it

Now that you mention it, can I borrow your computer to look for hotels?
Use this when the other person has just raised the topic, not for a completely new subject.
6.
eso me recuerda que
that reminds me that

That reminds me that I need to request time off today.
Use 'que' before the thought you want to add; the connection may be a personal association.
7.
por otro lado
on another note

On another note, who's going to take care of your dog during the trip?
Adds another aspect of the discussion; it does not always express a contrast.
8.
antes de que se me olvide
before I forget

Before I forget, do you have Luis's number?
Often introduces a quick side topic before the conversation continues.
9.
Dejemos ese tema por ahora.
Let's leave that for now.

Let's leave that for now; I need to talk to you about the hotel.
Sets a topic aside temporarily, without refusing to discuss it later.
10.
Volvamos al tema.
Let's get back to the topic.

Let's get back to the topic: how much do you want to spend on the hotel, Ana?
A direct way to bring both speakers back; it can sound firm after a long digression.
11.
¿En qué estábamos?
Where were we?

Ana, where were we before we started talking about your dog?
'Estábamos' refers to your place in the conversation, not a physical location.
12.
como te decía
as I was saying

As I was saying, I'd prefer a hotel near the beach.
Refers back to your own earlier point; use 'como decías' for the other person's point.
13.
volviendo a lo de antes
going back to what we were talking about earlier

Going back to what we were talking about earlier, can you talk to Luis today?
'Lo de antes' refers to an earlier topic that both speakers can identify.
14.
a propósito de algo
speaking of something

Speaking of the trip, have you talked to your boss yet, Ana?
Use 'a propósito de' with a named topic; 'a propósito' without 'de' can also mean intentionally.
15.
retomando lo de antes
picking up where we left off

Picking up where we left off, Luis can take care of your dog.
Slightly more structured than 'volviendo a lo de antes'; natural in conversations at work.
16.
para volver al tema
to get back to the topic

To get back to the topic, tell me which hotel you like best.
'Para' frames the next point as a way to refocus the conversation.
17.
con respecto a algo
as for something, regarding something

As for the hotel, I'd rather share a room with you, Ana.
Common at work and a little more formal than 'en cuanto a'; use the preposition 'a'.
18.
en relación con algo
regarding something, about something

About the time off, my boss still hasn't gotten back to me.
Common in work discussions; keep 'con' before the topic in this expression.
19.
pasando a otro tema
moving on to another topic

Moving on to another topic, can you help me with this work before lunch?
Useful for an organized discussion; more structured than 'cambiando de tema'.
20.
a todo esto
by the way

By the way, have you told Luis when we're leaving yet?
Informal; often introduces a related question that has not been addressed yet.
21.
retomando lo que decías
going back to what you were saying

Going back to what you were saying, why do you prefer traveling at night?
'Decías' points back to the other person's words, unlike 'como te decía'.
22.
para no desviarnos del tema
to stay on topic

To stay on topic, tell me if you can travel with me in July.
Gently redirects a discussion when it starts drifting, rather than introducing a new subject.
