My mild behavior and continued good conduct eventually won over the Emperor and his court. Even the army and the general public began to trust me, and I started to hope that I might soon be granted my freedom. To cultivate this favorable impression, I did everything I could to put the natives at ease. Over time, they grew less apprehensive; I would often lie down and allow five or six of them to dance upon my hand, and eventually, children even ventured to play hide-and-seek in my hair.
By this time, I had made significant progress in learning the language. One day, the Emperor decided to entertain me with the local shows, which far exceeded those of any other nation in both dexterity and magnificence. I was most entertained by the rope-dancers, who performed upon a slender white thread stretched about a foot above the ground.
In Lilliput, this activity is not merely a performance; it is a political maneuver. Only those who are candidates for high office or great favor at court practice it. When a prestigious position becomes vacant, several candidates petition the Emperor to let them dance on the rope. Whoever jumps the highest without falling succeeds to the office. Even the chief ministers are occasionally commanded to show that they have not lost their skill. Flimnap, the Treasurer, is known to perform a somersault on a thread no thicker than common English twine. These displays are often hazardous; I have seen several candidates break limbs, and Flimnap himself would have certainly broken his neck if he hadn't landed on one of the King’s cushions.
There is another ritual held only before the Emperor and the First Minister. Three silken threads—one blue, one red, and one green—are laid on a table as prizes for those the Emperor wishes to distinguish. The candidates undergo a trial where the Emperor holds a stick, and they must either leap over it or creep under it as it is moved up and down. Whoever shows the most agility and lasts the longest is rewarded with the blue silk, followed by red and green for the runners-up. You will see many great figures at court wearing these silken girdles around their waists.
The Emperor’s horses were now so accustomed to my presence that they would come right up to my feet without flinching. To further amuse the court, I designed a unique entertainment. I requested several tall sticks, which I fixed firmly into the ground to form a square. I then fastened my handkerchief to the tops of these sticks, stretching it tight until it resembled the head of a drum. Once the stage was set, I invited a troop of twenty-four royal horsemen to exercise upon it.
It was a remarkable sight to see them divide into two parties, performing mock battles and military maneuvers on this elevated plain. The Emperor was so delighted that he had the performance repeated several times, and even requested to be lifted up so he could give the words of command himself. Fortunately, no serious accidents occurred, though once a fiery horse kicked a hole through my handkerchief. I managed to catch both the horse and the rider in mid-air to prevent them from falling to the ground, and I quickly repaired the fabric, though I decided not to risk such a dangerous stunt again.
A few days before I regained my liberty, some messengers arrived with news of a "great black substance" found near the coast where I had first been washed ashore. They described it as a hollow, oddly shaped object, as wide as the King’s bedchamber. I immediately realized it was my hat, which I had lost during my struggle to reach the shore. The Emperor ordered it to be brought to me, and although the workmen had bored holes in the brim to drag it with hooks and horses, it arrived in relatively good condition.
Shortly after this, the Emperor requested a singular favor. He desired me to stand like a Colossus, with my legs spread wide apart. He then commanded his army—three thousand infantry and a thousand cavalry—to march under me with drums beating and colors flying. His Majesty issued strict orders that the soldiers should behave with the utmost decency. However, I must confess that my breeches were in such a poor state at the time that they provided some of the younger officers with a rather unexpected and amusing view.
I had sent many petitions for my freedom, and eventually, the Emperor brought the matter before his council. It was opposed only by Skyresh Bolgolam, the High Admiral, who had become my mortal enemy for no apparent reason. Nevertheless, the council outvoted him. Bolgolam was tasked with drafting the articles of my release, which he brought to me in person. To gain my freedom, I was required to swear a solemn oath, holding my right foot in my left hand while placing my finger on the crown of my head.
The agreement contained several strict conditions: I was not to leave the kingdom without permission; I could only enter the capital with an express order; I had to stick to the high roads and avoid walking in the fields; and, most importantly, I was to serve as an ally against the empire’s enemies on the island of Blefuscu.
In return for my cooperation, I was granted a daily allowance of food and drink sufficient for 1,724 Lilliputians. When I later asked how they had arrived at such a precise number, a friend explained that the royal mathematicians had measured my height. Finding that I was twelve times taller than they were, they calculated—based on the laws of geometry—that my body must equal the bulk of 1,724 of theirs, and would therefore require a proportionate amount of sustenance. This calculation gave me a profound respect for the ingenuity and precision of the Lilliputian people.
Once I had signed the articles, my chains were finally unlocked. I prostrated myself at the Emperor’s feet to express my gratitude, and he graciously remarked that he hoped I would prove to be a useful servant to his empire.
