Dr. Jekyll Was Quite at Ease

Two weeks later, Dr. Jekyll gave a dinner party. He invited five or six old friends. These men were all intelligent and successful. Mr. Utterson stayed at the house after the other guests left. This happened many times before. Hosts liked to keep Mr. Utterson with them. They liked his quiet company. Dr. Jekyll sat across from the fire. He was a large man of fifty years. He had a smooth face and kind eyes. He liked Mr. Utterson very much. "I want to speak to you, Dr. Jekyll," said Mr. Utterson. "I want to talk about your will (a document that says who gets a person's money after they die)." Dr. Jekyll tried to be funny. He told Mr. Utterson not to worry. He said that Mr. Utterson was like Dr. Lanyon. Dr. Jekyll called Dr. Lanyon a pedant (a person who worries too much about small rules). He was disappointed in Dr. Lanyon’s ideas about science. "You know I do not like your will," said Mr. Utterson. He did not want to talk about Dr. Lanyon. "Yes, I know that," said Dr. Jekyll. He spoke a little sharply. "I learned some things about Mr. Hyde," continued Mr. Utterson. Dr. Jekyll’s face became very pale. His eyes looked dark and unhappy. He said he did not want to hear more. He asked Mr. Utterson to drop the subject. Mr. Utterson said the things he heard were terrible. Dr. Jekyll said that it did not change anything. He said his situation was very strange. He said talking could not fix the problem. "Dr. Jekyll," said Mr. Utterson. "You know you can trust me. Tell me the truth. I am sure I can help you." Dr. Jekyll thanked Mr. Utterson. He said Mr. Utterson was a very good friend. But he said the problem was not what Mr. Utterson imagined. Then he said something very important. He said he could get rid of Mr. Hyde at any time. Dr. Jekyll asked for one favour. He said he had a great interest in Mr. Hyde. He asked Mr. Utterson to help Mr. Hyde if Dr. Jekyll died. He wanted Mr. Utterson to give Mr. Hyde his rights. Mr. Utterson sighed. He said he would never like Mr. Hyde. Dr. Jekyll did not ask him to like the man. He only asked for justice. Finally, Mr. Utterson promised to help.
