The Carew Murder Case

Nearly a year later, a terrible crime happened in London. The crime was very violent. A maid lived alone in a house near the river. She went upstairs to bed about eleven o'clock. The night was clear and the moon was bright. The girl sat by her window and looked at the lane. She felt very peaceful. Then she saw an old gentleman with white hair. He was walking along the lane. The old man met a small man. The girl recognized the small man. He was Mr. Hyde. He once visited her master. She did not like Mr. Hyde. The old man was very polite. He bowed to Mr. Hyde. He pointed with his hand. Perhaps he was asking for the way. The moon shone on the old man's kind face. Suddenly, Mr. Hyde became very angry. He had a heavy cane (a strong stick for walking). He hit the ground with his foot. He looked like a madman. Mr. Hyde hit the old man with the cane. The old man fell to the ground. Then Mr. Hyde jumped on the victim. He hit the old man many times. The girl heard the bones break. She felt very sick and she fainted. The girl woke up at two o'clock. She called the police. The murderer was gone. But the body was still in the lane. It was a horrible sight. The cane was broken in the middle. One half of the stick was in the gutter. The murderer took the other half. The police found a purse and a gold watch on the body. They also found a letter for Mr. Utterson. The police brought the letter to the lawyer the next morning. Mr. Utterson went to the police station. He looked at the body. He said the man was Sir Danvers Carew. The police officer was surprised. He showed Mr. Utterson the broken cane. Mr. Utterson felt afraid. He gave that cane to Dr. Jekyll many years ago. He knew Mr. Hyde was the killer. Mr. Utterson and a police inspector went to Soho in a cab (a carriage pulled by horses). The city was full of brown fog. The streets looked dirty and poor. It looked like a city in a bad dream. They arrived at Mr. Hyde's house. An old woman with a mean face opened the door. She said Mr. Hyde was not at home. She said he arrived late and left again quickly. She said his habits were very strange. Mr. Utterson and the inspector went into Mr. Hyde's rooms. The rooms were very expensive and beautiful. But the rooms were messy. Someone had searched the pockets of the clothes on the floor. There were grey ashes in the fireplace. Someone burned many papers. The inspector found the end of a green bank book in the ashes. They also found the other half of the cane behind a door. The inspector was happy. He said he had enough evidence. He found many thousands of pounds in Mr. Hyde's bank account. He thought Mr. Hyde would go to the bank for the money. But catching Mr. Hyde was not easy. He had no family and no photos. People described him in different ways. But everyone agreed on one thing. They said Mr. Hyde looked strange and deformed (having a body that is not the normal shape).
