Manner

How does it happen?

adverbial of manner adverb

의미

We can describe how an action is done, not just what happens. This can show speed, care, loudness, or another feature of the action. Languages use special word forms or phrases, and some have no separate ending for making an adverb. Unlike Qualities, Manner describes the action or event, not a person or thing.

알아보는 방법

Look for a word or phrase that answers how an action is done or how an event happens.

모국어에서는

한국어

Korean describes manner with adverbs such as 천천히, meaning 'slowly,' and 조용히, meaning 'quietly.' Many adjectives can also take -게 to describe how an action is performed. These expressions normally come before the verb they describe.

천천히 말해 주세요. (Cheoncheonhi malhae juseyo.)

문을 조용히 닫았어요. (Muneul joyonghi dadasseoyo.)

이름을 크게 써 주세요. (Ireumeul keuge sseo juseyo.)

크다 takes -게 to describe how the writing should be done.
