Ben: Welcome back to Vocafy Language in Real Life. I'm Ben, here again with Clara. Today we're looking at a language spoken across a huge part of the world, from the Atlantic coast of North Africa to the Arabian Peninsula and beyond.

அரபு மொழி.

Arabic.

ஆனால் கிளாரா, ஒருவர் “அரபு பேசுகிறார்” என்று மட்டும் சொல்வதால், அவர் எந்த வகை அரபைப் பேசுகிறார் என்பது எப்போதும் துல்லியமாகத் தெரிவதில்லை.

But Clara, saying someone "speaks Arabic" doesn't always tell us exactly what Arabic they speak.

கிளாரா: தொடங்குவதற்கு அதுவே சரியான இடம்.

Clara: That's the perfect place to start.

அரபு மொழியில், கற்போருக்குப் புதுமையாகத் தோன்றும் ஓர் அம்சம் உள்ளது. பரவலாகப் பகிரப்படும் ஒரு தரநிலை வடிவம் இருக்கிறது; ஆனால் அன்றாடப் பேச்சு இடத்திற்கு இடம் பெருமளவில் மாறுபடலாம்.

Arabic has something unusual for learners. There is a widely shared standard form, but everyday speech can vary greatly from one place to another.

பேசுவோர் அனைவரும் தாங்கள் பேசுவது அரபுதான் என்று கூறினாலும், மொராக்கோவில் நடக்கும் ஓர் உரையாடல், எகிப்து, லெபனான் அல்லது ஈராக்கில் நடக்கும் உரையாடலிலிருந்து மிகவும் வேறுபட்டு ஒலிக்கலாம்.

A conversation in Morocco might sound very different from one in Egypt, Lebanon or Iraq, even though the speakers may all describe what they speak as Arabic.

பென்: அப்படியானால், அரபு உண்மையில் ஒரே மொழியா அல்லது பல மொழிகளின் தொகுப்பா?

Ben: So is Arabic actually one language or a group of languages?

கிளாரா: இங்குதான் விஷயம் சுவாரஸ்யமாகிறது.

Clara: That's where things become interesting.

இதற்கு எளிமையான ஒரே பதில் இல்லை. ஏனெனில் “மொழி”, “வட்டார வழக்கு” ஆகியவை முற்றிலும் மொழியியல் அடிப்படையிலான பெயர்கள் அல்ல. வரலாறு, பண்பாடு, அடையாளம் ஆகியவையும் முக்கியம்.

There isn't one simple answer, because "language" and "dialect" aren't purely linguistic labels. History, culture and identity matter too.

பெரும்பாலானோர் தாங்கள் அரபு பேசுவதாகவே கருதுகின்றனர். மேலும், அந்தப் பிராந்தியத்தை இணைக்கும் பொதுவான எழுத்து மொழியும் முறையான மொழியும் உள்ளது.

Most speakers see themselves as speaking Arabic, and there is a shared written and formal language connecting the region.

அதே நேரத்தில், அன்றாடப் பேச்சு வகைகள் உச்சரிப்பு, சொற்களஞ்சியம், இலக்கணம் ஆகியவற்றில் கணிசமாக வேறுபடலாம்.

At the same time, the everyday spoken varieties can differ substantially in pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar.

இந்த நிலையை மொழியியலாளர்கள் பெரும்பாலும் “இரட்டை வழக்கு” (diglossia) என்ற சொல்லால் குறிப்பிடுகின்றனர்.

Linguists often discuss this situation using the term diglossia.

பென்: அதன் பின்னால் இருக்கும் கருத்தைவிட மிகவும் சிக்கலானதாக ஒலிக்கும் சொற்களில் இதுவும் ஒன்று.

Ben: That's one of those words that sounds much more complicated than the idea behind it.

இங்கே “இரட்டை வழக்கு” என்றால் என்ன?

What does diglossia mean here?

கிளாரா: மிகவும் எளிமையாகச் சொன்னால், ஒரு மொழியின் வெவ்வேறு வடிவங்கள் வெவ்வேறு தேவைகளுக்குப் பயன்படுத்தப்படுகின்றன என்று பொருள்.

Clara: In the simplest version, it means that different forms of a language are used for different purposes.

அரபில், குறிப்பாக எழுத்துக்கும் முறையான தகவல்தொடர்புக்கும் ஒரு தரநிலை வடிவம் பயன்படுத்தப்படுகிறது. ஆனால் மக்கள் பொதுவாக வீட்டில் ஓர் உள்ளூர்ப் பேச்சு வகையைப் பேசியே வளர்கின்றனர்.

Arabic has a standard form used especially for writing and formal communication, while people usually grow up speaking a local variety at home.

இன்றைய தரநிலை வடிவம் பொதுவாக நவீனத் தரநிலை அரபு அல்லது MSA என்று அழைக்கப்படுகிறது.

The standard form today is usually called Modern Standard Arabic, or MSA.

ஆனால் இதில் ஒரு முக்கியமான நுணுக்கம் இருக்கிறது.

But there's an important detail.

ஒரு பெட்டியில் MSA, மற்றொரு பெட்டியில் வட்டார வழக்கு என்று இரண்டாகத் தெளிவாகப் பிரிக்கப்பட்ட உலகம் இது அல்ல.

It isn't really a neat world with two boxes, one labelled MSA and the other labelled dialect.

பென்: ஏன் இல்லை?

Ben: Why not?

கிளாரா: ஏனெனில் நிஜப் பேச்சு அதைவிட மிகவும் கலவையானது.

Clara: Because real speech is much messier.

சூழ்நிலைக்கேற்ப மக்கள் முறையான மொழிக்கும் உரையாடல் மொழிக்கும் இடையே மாறிச் செல்லலாம். தரநிலை மொழியின் அம்சங்களைத் தங்கள் உள்ளூர்ப் பேச்சின் கூறுகளுடன் கலந்தும் பயன்படுத்தலாம்.

People can move between more formal and more conversational language depending on the situation. They may mix standard features with elements of their local speech.

பல்கலைக்கழக விவாதம், தொலைக்காட்சி நேர்காணல் அல்லது அரசியல் விவாதம் ஆகியவை நண்பர்களுக்கிடையிலான உரையாடலைவிட முறையாக ஒலிக்கலாம். அதற்காக அவை முழுக்க முழுக்கப் பாடநூல் MSA-வாக இருக்க வேண்டியதில்லை.

A university discussion, a television interview or a political debate might sound more formal than a conversation between friends, without necessarily becoming pure textbook MSA.

எனவே, இதை ஒரு தொடர்ச்சியான அளவுகோலாகக் கற்பனை செய்வது சிறந்தது.

So it's often better to imagine a spectrum.

ஒரு முனையில் மிகவும் முறையான தரநிலை அரபு உள்ளது. மறுமுனையில் மிகவும் உள்ளூர்மயமான அன்றாடப் பேச்சு உள்ளது. மக்கள் இவ்விரண்டிற்கும் இடையே மாறிச் செல்ல முடியும்.

At one end you have highly formal Standard Arabic. At the other you have very local everyday speech. And people can move around between them.

பென்: முதலில் முறையான முனையிலிருந்து தொடங்குவோம்.

Ben: Let's start with the formal end.

நவீனத் தரநிலை அரபு என்றால் துல்லியமாக என்ன?

What exactly is Modern Standard Arabic?

கிளாரா: செவ்வியல் அரபை நெருக்கமாக அடிப்படையாகக் கொண்டு நவீன முறையில் தரப்படுத்தப்பட்ட அரபு வடிவமே MSA.

Clara: MSA is the modern standardized form of Arabic closely based on Classical Arabic.

பெரும்பாலான முறையான எழுத்துகளில் கற்போர் சந்திக்கும் மொழி இதுதான். நூல்கள், செய்தித்தாள்கள், அதிகாரப்பூர்வ ஆவணங்கள் மற்றும் பல கல்விப் பொருட்களில் இதைக் காணலாம்.

It is the language learners encounter in most formal writing. You'll see it in books, newspapers, official documents and much educational material.

செய்தி ஒளிபரப்புகள், தயாரிக்கப்பட்ட உரைகள், ஆவணப்படங்கள் மற்றும் பிற முறையான சூழல்களிலும் இதன் பல வடிவங்களைக் கேட்கலாம்.

You'll also hear forms of it in news broadcasts, prepared speeches, documentaries and other formal settings.

அரபு மொழி பேசப்படும் உலகிற்கு பரவலாகப் பகிரப்படும் ஓர் எழுத்துமொழியை வழங்குவது இதன் மிகப் பெரிய பலங்களில் ஒன்று.

One of its great strengths is that it gives the Arabic-speaking world a broadly shared written language.

பென்: அப்படியானால், மொராக்கோவைச் சேர்ந்த ஒருவரும் ஓமானைச் சேர்ந்த ஒருவரும் ஒரே செய்தித்தாள் கட்டுரையைப் படிக்க முடியும்.

Ben: So someone in Morocco and someone in Oman could read the same newspaper article.

கிளாரா: சரியாகச் சொன்னீர்கள். இருவருக்கும் தரநிலை அரபில் நல்ல தேர்ச்சி இருக்க வேண்டும் என்பதே நிபந்தனை.

Clara: Exactly, assuming both have a good command of Standard Arabic.

ஆனால் காலை உணவின்போது அவர்கள் வழக்கமாக அப்படித்தான் பேசுவார்கள் என்று அதற்குப் பொருள் இல்லை.

But that doesn't mean they normally speak that way over breakfast.

குழந்தைகள் பொதுவாகத் தங்கள் குடும்பமும் சமூகமும் பயன்படுத்தும் அரபுப் பேச்சு வகையைப் பேசியே வளர்கின்றனர். பள்ளிக் கல்வி, வாசிப்பு, ஊடகம் மற்றும் முறையான வாழ்க்கைச் சூழல்கள் வழியாகத் தரநிலை அரபு மிகவும் முக்கியத்துவம் பெறுகிறது.

Children typically grow up speaking the Arabic variety of their family and community. Standard Arabic becomes much more important through school, reading, media and formal life.

பென்: அப்படியானால், ஒரு குழந்தை தன் பெற்றோரிடமிருந்து முதலில் கற்கும் மொழி பொதுவாக MSA அல்ல.

Ben: So MSA isn't normally the language a child first learns from their parents.

கிளாரா: சரிதான்.

Clara: Right.

கற்போருக்கு அரபு புதுமையாகத் தோன்றுவதற்கு இதுவும் ஒரு காரணம்.

That's one reason Arabic can feel unusual to learners.

நீங்கள் ஆங்கிலம் கற்றுக்கொள்வதாகக் கற்பனை செய்யுங்கள். ஆனால் நூல்கள், செய்திகள், பள்ளி ஆகியவற்றின் மொழி, மக்கள் தங்கள் குடும்பத்தினருடன் இயல்பாகப் பயன்படுத்தும் மொழியிலிருந்து கணிசமாக வேறுபட்டிருப்பதைப் பின்னர் அறிகிறீர்கள்.

Imagine learning English, but discovering that the language of books, news and school is noticeably different from the language people naturally use with their families.

இந்த ஒப்பீடு முழுமையானதல்ல. ஆனால் இதில் உள்ள இடைவெளியைப் புரிந்துகொள்ள இது உதவுகிறது.

The comparison isn't perfect, but it gives you a sense of the distance involved.

பென்: அரபு மொழி பேசப்படும் உலகின் வெவ்வேறு பகுதிகளுக்கு இடையில் அந்த இடைவெளி எவ்வளவு பெரிதாக இருக்கலாம்?

Ben: And how large can that distance become between different parts of the Arabic-speaking world?

கிளாரா: மிகவும் பெரிதாக இருக்கலாம்.

Clara: Quite large.

எகிப்திய அரபு, லெவான்ட் அரபு, வளைகுடா அரபு, ஈராக்கிய அரபு, மக்ரெபி அரபு போன்ற பரந்த குழுக்கள் உள்ளன. அவை ஒவ்வொன்றுக்குள்ளும் இன்னும் பல பிராந்திய மற்றும் உள்ளூர் வேறுபாடுகள் காணப்படுகின்றன.

There are broad groups such as Egyptian, Levantine, Gulf, Iraqi and Maghrebi Arabic, and within those there are many more regional and local differences.

அண்டைப் பகுதிகளின் பேச்சு வகைகளைப் புரிந்துகொள்வது பொதுவாக எளிதாக இருக்கும். தொலைதூரப் பகுதிகளின் வகைகள் மிகவும் கடினமாக இருக்கலாம்.

Neighbouring varieties are often relatively easy for speakers to understand, while varieties from distant regions can be much harder.

ஆனால் புவியியல் மட்டுமே இதைத் தீர்மானிப்பதில்லை.

But geography isn't the only factor.

ஒரு பேச்சு வகையை எந்த அளவுக்குக் கேட்டுப் பழகியிருக்கிறோம் என்பதும் முக்கியம்.

Exposure matters too.

தொலைக்காட்சி, இசை அல்லது இணைய ஊடகங்களில் ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட பேச்சு வகையைப் பல ஆண்டுகளாகக் கேட்டு வந்திருந்தால், புவியியல் தொலைவு உணர்த்துவதைவிட அதை நீங்கள் மிக நன்றாகப் புரிந்துகொள்ளக்கூடும்.

If you've spent years hearing a particular variety in television, music or online media, you may understand it much better than geographical distance alone would suggest.

பென்: இதுதான் நம்மை எகிப்துக்கு அழைத்துச் செல்கிறது.

Ben: Which brings us to Egypt.

இந்தக் கதையின் மூல வடிவம், எகிப்திய அரபை அரபுலகின் அதிகாரப்பூர்வமற்ற பொதுமொழி என்று அழைத்திருக்கக்கூடும்.

The original version of this story would probably call Egyptian Arabic the unofficial common language of the Arab world.

அது கொஞ்சம் மிகைப்படுத்தலா?

Is that going too far?

கிளாரா: ஆம். ஆனால் அதற்குப் பின்னால் ஒரு முக்கியமான உண்மை இருக்கிறது.

Clara: Yes, but there's an important truth behind it.

இருபதாம் நூற்றாண்டில் அரபு மொழி வெகுஜனக் கலாச்சாரத்தின் மீது எகிப்து மிகப் பெரிய செல்வாக்குச் செலுத்தியது.

Egypt had an enormous influence on Arabic-language popular culture during the twentieth century.

Egyptian films, songs, radio programmes and television travelled throughout the region. As a result, Egyptian Arabic became familiar to huge numbers of people who didn't speak it themselves.

பென்: அப்படியானால், எகிப்தியத் திரைப்படங்களைப் பார்த்து வளர்ந்ததால் ஒருவர் எகிப்திய அரபை ஓரளவு புரிந்துகொள்ளக்கூடும்.

Ben: So someone might understand Egyptian Arabic partly because they grew up watching Egyptian movies.

கிளாரா: சரியாகச் சொன்னீர்கள்.

Clara: Exactly.

ஒரு மொழியின் வெவ்வேறு பேச்சு வகைகளுக்கிடையிலான பரஸ்பரப் புரிதலை ஊடகம் எவ்வாறு மாற்ற முடியும் என்பதற்கு இது சிறந்த எடுத்துக்காட்டு.

It's a great example of how media can change mutual understanding between language varieties.

பிற நாடுகளின் உள்ளூர்ப் பேச்சை எகிப்திய அரபு மாற்றிவிடவில்லை. வெவ்வேறு பகுதிகளைச் சேர்ந்தவர்கள் சந்திக்கும்போது தானாகவே எகிப்திய அரபுக்கு மாறுவதும் இல்லை.

Egyptian Arabic didn't replace the local speech of other countries, and people from different regions don't automatically switch to Egyptian when they meet.

ஆனால் பல தசாப்தங்களாகப் பரவிய வெகுஜனக் கலாச்சாரம், மிகவும் பரவலாக அறியப்படும் அரபுப் பேச்சு வடிவங்களில் ஒன்றாக அதை மாற்றியது.

But decades of popular culture made it one of the most widely recognised spoken forms of Arabic.

பென்: இரண்டு அரபு மொழிப் பேச்சாளர்களால் ஒருவரின் உள்ளூர்ப் பேச்சை மற்றவர் எளிதாகப் புரிந்துகொள்ள முடியாதபோது என்ன நடக்கும்?

Ben: What happens when two Arabic speakers don't easily understand each other's local speech?

கிளாரா: அவர்கள் தங்கள் பேச்சைச் சூழ்நிலைக்கேற்ப மாற்றிக்கொள்வார்கள்.

Clara: They adapt.

மிகவும் உள்ளூர்மயமான சொற்றொடர்களைத் தவிர்க்கலாம். மற்றவர் புரிந்துகொள்வார் என்று எதிர்பார்க்கும் சொற்களைப் பயன்படுத்தலாம். பரவலாகப் புரிந்துகொள்ளப்படும் வடிவங்களை நோக்கி மாறலாம் அல்லது தரநிலை அரபின் கூறுகளைச் சேர்த்துக்கொள்ளலாம்.

They might avoid strongly local expressions. They may use vocabulary they expect the other person to recognise. They can move toward more widely understood forms or bring in elements of Standard Arabic.

அவர்கள் பின்பற்றும் சரியான உத்தி, பேசுவோர், அவர்களது பின்னணி, சூழ்நிலை ஆகியவற்றைப் பொறுத்தது.

The exact strategy depends on the speakers, their backgrounds and the situation.

“MSA-வுக்கு எதிராக வட்டார வழக்கு” என்ற எளிய பிரிப்பு நிஜ வாழ்க்கையை முழுமையாக விளக்காததற்கு இதுவும் ஒரு காரணம்.

That's another reason the simple picture of "MSA versus dialect" doesn't quite capture real life.

பென்: கிட்டத்தட்ட ஒவ்வொரு கற்போரும் உடனடியாகக் கவனிக்கும் ஒன்றைப் பார்ப்போம்.

Ben: Let's look at something that almost every learner notices immediately.

எழுத்துமுறை.

The writing system.

கிளாரா: அரபு வலமிருந்து இடமாக எழுதப்படுகிறது. அதன் எழுத்துகள் ஒரு சொல்லில் இடம்பெறும் இடத்துக்கேற்ப வடிவம் மாறுகின்றன.

Clara: Arabic is written from right to left, and its letters change shape depending on where they appear in a word.

முதலில் அது கடினமாகத் தோன்றலாம். ஆனால் தோற்றத்தில் தெரிவதைவிட இந்த எழுத்துமுறை மிகவும் ஒழுங்கானது.

That can look difficult at first, but the system is much more regular than it may appear.

பெரும்பாலான எழுத்துகள் முன்னும் பின்னும் வரும் எழுத்துகளுடன் இணைகின்றன. அதனால்தான் எழுதப்பட்ட அரபுக்கு அந்தத் தொடர்ச்சியாகப் பாயும் தோற்றம் கிடைக்கிறது; அதைப் பார்த்தவுடன் அடையாளம் காணவும் முடிகிறது.

Most letters connect to the letters around them, so written Arabic has that flowing appearance that makes it instantly recognisable.

கற்போரை ஆச்சரியப்படுத்தும் மற்றோர் அம்சமும் உள்ளது.

There is another feature that surprises learners too.

சாதாரண உரைகளில் குறில் உயிரொலிகள் பெரும்பாலும் எழுதப்படுவதில்லை.

Short vowels are often not written in ordinary texts.

பென்: அப்படியானால், ஒரு சொல்லை எப்படி வாசிக்க வேண்டும் என்று மக்களுக்கு எப்படித் தெரியும்?

Ben: So how do people know what the word says?

கிளாரா: பெரும்பாலும் சொற்களஞ்சியம், இலக்கணம், சூழல் ஆகியவற்றின் உதவியால்தான்.

Clara: Mostly from vocabulary, grammar and context.

தேவைப்படும்போது கூடுதல் உயிர்க்குறிகளைச் சேர்க்கலாம். குழந்தைகளுக்கான நூல்கள், சமய நூல்கள், கற்போருக்கான பயிற்சிப் பொருட்கள் ஆகியவற்றில் அவை மிகவும் பயனுள்ளதாக இருக்கும்.

Extra vowel marks can be added when needed, and they're especially useful in children's books, religious texts and materials for learners.

ஆனால் அனுபவமுள்ள வாசகர்களுக்குச் சாதாரண உரைகளைப் படிக்க அவை பொதுவாகத் தேவையில்லை.

But experienced readers usually don't need them for ordinary text.

பென்: அது கடினமாகத் தோன்றுகிறது.

Ben: That sounds difficult.

கிளாரா: ஆரம்பத்தில் அப்படித்தான் இருக்கலாம்.

Clara: At first it can be.

ஆனால் சொற்களஞ்சியத்தைப் புரிந்துகொள்ள அரபு கற்போருக்கு மற்றொரு வலுவான வழிகாட்டியையும் வழங்குகிறது. அதுதான் அதன் வேர்கள் மற்றும் சொல்லமைப்பு வடிவங்களின் அமைப்பு.

But Arabic also gives learners another powerful clue to vocabulary, and that's its system of roots and patterns.

பல அரபுச் சொற்கள் மூன்று மெய்யொலிகளைக் கொண்ட ஒரு வேரைச் சுற்றி உருவாக்கப்படுகின்றன.

Many Arabic words are built around a root containing three consonants.

எழுதுதல் என்ற கருத்துடன் தொடர்புடைய K-T-B இதற்கான புகழ்பெற்ற எடுத்துக்காட்டு.

A classic example is K-T-B, which is associated with writing.

இந்தக் குடும்பத்திலிருந்து kitaab — புத்தகம், kaatib — எழுத்தாளர், maktab — அலுவலகம் அல்லது மேசை, maktaba — நூலகம் அல்லது புத்தகக்கடை போன்ற சொற்கள் கிடைக்கின்றன.

From this family you get words such as kitaab for book, kaatib for writer, maktab for office or desk, and maktaba for library or bookshop.

பென்: அரபில் எனக்கு மிகவும் பிடித்த அம்சங்களில் இதுவும் ஒன்று.

Ben: That's one of my favourite features of Arabic.

K-T-B என்பதை அடையாளம் கண்டுகொண்ட பிறகு, அந்தச் சொற்கள் முற்றிலும் தொடர்பற்றவையாகத் தோன்றுவதில்லை.

Once you recognise K-T-B, those words stop looking completely unrelated.

கிளாரா: சரியாகச் சொன்னீர்கள்.

Clara: Exactly.

ஒவ்வொரு சொல்லையும் தானாகவே ஊகிக்க உதவும் ஒரு குறியீடாக இதைக் கருதக் கூடாது.

You shouldn't think of it as a code that lets you automatically guess every word.

மொழி ஒருபோதும் அவ்வளவு எளிதாக நமக்கு ஒத்துழைப்பதில்லை.

Language is never quite that cooperative.

ஆனால் அரபின் மிகப் பெரிய சொற்களஞ்சியத்தைப் பல குடும்பங்களாக ஒழுங்குபடுத்த வேர்கள் உதவுகின்றன.

But roots help organise a huge amount of Arabic vocabulary into families.

அறிமுகமில்லாத சொற்களுக்குள் தெரிந்த வேர்களை அடையாளம் காணத் தொடங்கியதும், அந்த மொழி முன்பைவிட மிகவும் குறைவாகவே தொடர்பற்றதாகத் தோன்றும்.

Once learners start recognising familiar roots inside unfamiliar words, the language can begin to feel much less random.

பென்: அடுத்து ஒலிகள் இருக்கின்றன.

Ben: And then there are the sounds.

அரபை உச்சரிப்பது கடினம் என்ற பெயர் உள்ளது.

Arabic has a reputation for being difficult to pronounce.

கிளாரா: ஆங்கிலம் பேசுவோருக்குப் பழக்கமில்லாத பல ஒலிகள் அரபில் இருக்கின்றன.

Clara: It does contain several sounds that English speakers aren't used to.

அரபு எழுத்தான அய்ன் (ayn) குறிக்கும் ஒலி இதற்கான புகழ்பெற்ற ஓர் எடுத்துக்காட்டு.

One famous example is the sound represented by the Arabic letter ayn.

கற்போருக்கு ஆரம்பத்தில் மிகவும் ஒத்ததாகக் கேட்கக்கூடிய மெய்யொலி வேறுபாடுகளும் அரபில் உள்ளன. ஆனால் தாய்மொழியாகப் பேசுவோருக்கு அவை சொற்களை வேறுபடுத்துகின்றன.

Arabic also has consonant contrasts that can initially sound very similar to learners but distinguish words for native speakers.

அசாதாரணமான ஓர் ஒலியை ஒருமுறை உச்சரிப்பது மட்டுமே சவால் அல்ல.

The challenge isn't simply producing an unusual sound once.

அந்த வேறுபாட்டைத் தொடர்ந்து துல்லியமாகக் கேட்டு உணரவும், பின்னர் சொற்களிலும் வாக்கியங்களிலும் இயல்பாக உச்சரிக்கவும் கற்றுக்கொள்ள வேண்டும்.

You have to learn to hear the difference reliably and then produce it naturally inside words and sentences.

பென்: பிராந்தியப் பேச்சு வகைகளுக்கு இடையிலும் உச்சரிப்பு மாறுபடுகிறதா?

Ben: Does pronunciation vary between the regional varieties too?

கிளாரா: பெருமளவில் மாறுபடுகிறது.

Clara: Very much so.

எழுத்தில் ஒரே மாதிரியாக இருக்கும் ஓர் எழுத்து, அரபு பேசப்படும் உலகின் வெவ்வேறு பகுதிகளில் வெவ்வேறு விதமாக உச்சரிக்கப்படலாம்.

The same written letter can be pronounced differently in different parts of the Arabic-speaking world.

தாங்கள் எந்தப் பேச்சு வகையைக் கேட்கிறோம் என்பதை அறிந்துகொள்ள கற்போருக்கு இது மற்றொரு நல்ல காரணம்.

That gives learners another good reason to know which variety they're listening to.

கற்று தேர்ச்சி பெறுவதற்காகக் காத்திருக்கும், அனைவருக்கும் பொதுவான ஒரே அன்றாட அரபு உச்சரிப்பு என்று எதுவும் இல்லை.

There isn't just one universal everyday Arabic accent waiting to be mastered.

பென்: இந்த அத்தியாயத்தின் மிகப் பெரிய நடைமுறைக் கேள்விக்கு இது நம்மை அழைத்துச் செல்கிறது.

Ben: And that brings us to probably the biggest practical question in the entire episode.

இன்று நான் அரபு கற்க வேண்டும் என்று முடிவு செய்தால், உண்மையில் எதைக் கற்க வேண்டும்?

If I decide today that I want to learn Arabic, what should I actually learn?

MSA-வையா அல்லது பேச்சு வகைகளில் ஒன்றையா?

MSA or one of the spoken varieties?

கிளாரா: சிறிது ஏமாற்றமளிக்கும் அளவுக்கு மிக எளிமையான பதில்தான் சிறந்தது.

Clara: The best answer is frustratingly simple.

நீங்கள் என்ன செய்ய விரும்புகிறீர்கள் என்பதைப் பொறுத்தது.

It depends on what you want to do.

செய்தித்தாள்களையும் நூல்களையும் படிக்க, முறையான செய்திகளைப் பின்தொடர, எழுத்து அரபுடன் பணியாற்ற அல்லது நாடுகளைக் கடந்து முறையான சூழல்களில் தொடர்புகொள்ள விரும்பினால், MSA மிகவும் பயனுள்ளது.

If you want to read newspapers and books, follow formal news, work with written Arabic or communicate across countries in formal contexts, MSA is extremely valuable.

நீங்கள் ஜோர்டானில் குடியேறுகிறீர்கள் என்றும், கஃபேக்கள், கடைகள் மற்றும் அன்றாடச் சூழல்களில் மக்களுடன் பேசுவதே உங்கள் முக்கிய நோக்கம் என்றும் வைத்துக்கொண்டால், லெவான்ட் பேச்சு அரபு உடனடியாகப் பயனளிக்கும்.

If you're moving to Jordan and your main goal is talking to people in cafés, shops and everyday life, spoken Levantine Arabic will be immediately useful.

நீங்கள் கெய்ரோவில் வாழ்கிறீர்கள் என்றால், அன்றாட வாழ்வுக்கான இயல்பான தேர்வு எகிப்திய அரபுதான்.

If you're living in Cairo, Egyptian Arabic becomes the obvious everyday choice.

பென்: அப்படியானால், ஒவ்வோர் உரையாடலையும் தானாகவே திறந்துவிடும் முதன்மைச் சாவி MSA அல்ல.

Ben: So MSA isn't the master key that automatically unlocks every conversation.

கிளாரா: சரியாகச் சொன்னீர்கள்.

Clara: Exactly.

அரபின் பொதுவாகப் பகிரப்படும், மிகவும் முக்கியமான ஒரு பகுதிக்கான அணுகலை அது வழங்குகிறது; குறிப்பாக எழுத்து மொழிக்கும் முறையான மொழிக்கும்.

It gives you access to a shared and enormously important part of Arabic, especially the written and formal language.

ஆனால் MSA தெரிந்திருப்பதால் ஒவ்வொரு நாட்டிலும் நடைபெறும் வேகமான அன்றாட உரையாடலைத் தானாகவே புரிந்துகொள்ள முடியும் என்று பொருள் இல்லை.

But knowing MSA doesn't automatically mean you'll understand rapid everyday conversation in every country.

இதன் மறுபக்கமும் உண்மை.

The reverse is also true.

ஒரே ஓர் உள்ளூர்ப் பேச்சு வகையை மட்டும் கற்ற ஒருவர், அந்தப் பகுதியில் மிக நன்றாகத் தொடர்புகொள்ளலாம். அதே நேரத்தில், முறையான எழுத்து மொழியை அவர் சிரமமாக உணரக்கூடும்.

Someone who learns only one local variety may communicate very well in that region while still finding formal writing difficult.

பென்: கற்போர் ஒன்றைத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்து மற்றொன்றைப் புறக்கணிக்க வேண்டுமா?

Ben: Do learners have to choose one and ignore the other?

கிளாரா: தேவையில்லை.

Clara: Not at all.

அரபை ஆழமாகக் கற்க விரும்பும் பலருக்கு, ஒரு பேச்சு வகையுடன் சேர்த்து ஓரளவு MSA கற்றுக்கொள்வது மிகவும் பொருத்தமானது.

For many serious learners, learning some MSA alongside one spoken variety makes a lot of sense.

MSA வழியாக எழுத்துமுறை, வாசிப்பு, பரந்த முறையான சொற்களஞ்சியம் ஆகியவற்றைக் கற்கலாம். அதே நேரத்தில், உங்கள் தேவைகளுக்கு மிகவும் பொருந்தும் பேச்சு வகையில் கேட்கும் மற்றும் பேசும் திறன்களைப் படிப்படியாக வளர்த்துக்கொள்ளலாம்.

You might learn the script, reading and broader formal vocabulary through MSA while gradually building your listening and speaking skills in the variety most relevant to your life.

ஒவ்வொன்றுக்கும் நீங்கள் அளிக்கும் முக்கியத்துவம், உங்கள் இலக்குகளுக்கேற்ப மாறலாம்.

How much attention you give each one can change with your goals.

பென்: அனைவரும் முதலில் இரண்டு ஆண்டுகள் MSA கற்றுவிட்டு, அதன் பிறகே மக்கள் உண்மையில் எப்படிப் பேசுகிறார்கள் என்பதைக் கற்கத் தொடங்க வேண்டும் என்று சொல்வதைவிட இது நடைமுறைக்கு ஏற்றதாகத் தெரிகிறது.

Ben: That feels more realistic than saying everyone should spend two years on MSA and only then start learning how people actually talk.

கிளாரா: மிகவும் நடைமுறைக்கு ஏற்றது.

Clara: Much more realistic.

ஒவ்வொரு கற்போருக்கும் பொருந்தும் ஒரே சரியான பாதை என்று எதுவும் இல்லை.

There isn't one correct route for every learner.

அரபு இலக்கியம் பயில்பவரின் தேவைகள், பெய்ரூட்டில் குடியேறுபவரின் தேவைகளிலிருந்து வேறுபடுகின்றன. உறவினர்களுடன் பேச விரும்புபவரின் தேவைகள் இவ்விருவரிடமிருந்தும் வேறுபடும்.

Someone studying Arabic literature has different needs from someone moving to Beirut, and both have different needs from someone who simply wants to speak with relatives.

வெவ்வேறு தேவைகளை நிறைவேற்றும் பல வடிவங்கள் அரபில் உள்ளன என்பதைத் தொடக்கத்திலிருந்தே புரிந்துகொள்வதுதான் முக்கியம்.

The important thing is to understand from the beginning that Arabic has different forms serving different purposes.

அப்போது அந்த மாறுபாடு பின்னர் உங்களை ஆச்சரியப்படுத்தும் ஒன்றாக இல்லாமல், முன்கூட்டியே திட்டமிடக்கூடிய ஒன்றாக மாறும்.

Then the variation becomes something you can plan for rather than something that surprises you later.

பென்: இது நம்மை மீண்டும் தலைப்புக்கு அழைத்துச் செல்கிறது.

Ben: Which brings us back to our title.

ஒரே மொழி, ஆயிரம் குரல்கள்.

One language, a thousand voices.

கிளாரா: சரியாகச் சொன்னீர்கள்.

Clara: Exactly.

“ஆயிரம்” என்பது கவித்துவமான சொல்லாடல்தான். ஆனால் அதன் பின்னால் உள்ள கருத்து முக்கியமானது.

The "thousand" is poetic, of course, but the idea matters.

அரபுக்கு வலுவான பொதுமரபும் பரவலாகப் பயன்படுத்தப்படும் தரநிலை வடிவமும் உள்ளன. அதே நேரத்தில், அன்றாடப் பேச்சு அதைப் பயன்படுத்தும் மக்களின் பரந்த புவியியல் பரப்பையும் பன்முகத்தன்மையையும் பிரதிபலிக்கிறது.

Arabic has a powerful shared tradition and a widely used standard form, while everyday speech reflects the enormous geography and diversity of the people who use it.

இந்த இரண்டும் ஒன்றையொன்று மறுப்பவை அல்ல.

Those two things don't cancel each other out.

இரண்டுமே அரபின் பகுதிகள்தான்.

They're both part of Arabic.

பென்: அப்படியானால், அரபு உண்மையில் ஒரே மொழியா அல்லது அடிப்படையில் பல மொழிகளா என்பது சுவாரஸ்யமான கேள்வி அல்லவோ.

Ben: So perhaps the interesting question isn't whether Arabic is really one language or secretly many languages.

கிளாரா: அதுதான் சரி என்று நினைக்கிறேன்.

Clara: I think that's right.

கற்போருக்கு, அதன் வெவ்வேறு வடிவங்கள் ஒன்றோடொன்று எவ்வாறு தொடர்புபடுகின்றன என்பதே மிகவும் பயனுள்ள கேள்வி.

For a learner, the more useful question is how its different forms connect.

செய்தித்தாளில் நீங்கள் படிக்கும் மொழி, முறையான உரையில் கேட்கும் மொழி, எகிப்தியத் திரைப்படத்தில் பார்க்கும் மொழி, அம்மானில் ஓர் உரையாடலில் பயன்படுத்தும் மொழி ஆகியவை ஒரே மாதிரி ஒலிக்காமல் இருக்கலாம்.

The language you read in a newspaper, hear in a formal speech, watch in an Egyptian film and use in a conversation in Amman may not sound the same.

ஆனால் அவை ஒன்றுக்கொன்று தொடர்பில்லாத தனித்தனி உலகங்களும் அல்ல.

But they're not isolated worlds either.

அரபைக் கற்பது என்பது, அந்த மொழிப் பரப்பில் எவ்வாறு பயணிப்பது என்பதைப் படிப்படியாகக் கற்பதாகும்.

Learning Arabic means gradually learning how to move through that landscape.

பென்: அப்போது அந்தச் சிக்கல் ஒரு பிரச்சினையாகத் தோன்றாமல், மொழியைச் சுவாரஸ்யமாக்கும் அம்சங்களில் ஒன்றாகத் தெரியத் தொடங்குகிறது.

Ben: And suddenly the complexity starts looking less like a problem and more like part of what makes the language interesting.

கிளாரா: சரியாகச் சொன்னீர்கள்.

Clara: Exactly.

நீங்கள் ஒவ்வொரு பேச்சு வகையையும் கற்க வேண்டியதில்லை.

You don't need to learn every variety.

நீங்கள் ஏன் அரபு கற்கிறீர்கள் என்பதை அறிந்து, பயனுள்ள ஒரு தொடக்க இடத்தைத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்து, நீங்கள் முன்னேறும்போது அந்த மொழி வெவ்வேறு திசைகளில் விரியும் என்பதைப் புரிந்துகொள்ள வேண்டும்.

You need to know why you're learning Arabic, choose a useful place to begin, and understand that the language will open up in different directions as you go.

பென்: எல்லா இடங்களிலும் பயன்படும் மாயமான ஒரே அரபு வடிவத்தைத் தேடுவதைவிட இது மிகச் சிறந்த பதில் என்று நினைக்கிறேன்.

Ben: I think that's a much better answer than looking for one magical version of Arabic that works everywhere.

கிளாரா, இதைப் புரிந்துகொள்ள எங்களுக்கு உதவியதற்கு நன்றி.

Clara, thanks for helping us unpack it.

கிளாரா: மகிழ்ச்சி, பென்.

Clara: My pleasure, Ben.

பென்: கேட்டுக்கொண்டிருக்கும் அனைவருக்கும் நன்றி. Vocafy வழங்கும் ‘நிஜ வாழ்வில் மொழி’ நிகழ்ச்சியில் அடுத்த முறை சந்திப்போம்.

Ben: And thanks to everyone listening. We'll see you next time on Vocafy Language in Real Life.
