Before the First Word: Learning Starts with Sound
Language experience begins surprisingly early.
During the later stages of pregnancy, a fetus can hear sounds from outside the womb. Speech is muffled, so fine details are difficult to perceive, but broader features such as rhythm, pitch, and intonation survive relatively well. Newborns consequently arrive with some experience of the sound patterns and voices they heard before birth. Research has found, for example, early sensitivity to the mother's voice and to familiar prosodic patterns.
This does not mean that babies understand language before they are born. What they can learn at this stage is much more basic: properties of sound, rhythm, and familiarity.
After birth, this learning accelerates.
Becoming Tuned to the Languages Around Them
Young infants are initially sensitive to a remarkably wide range of speech distinctions, including some that are not important in the language spoken around them.
During roughly the second half of the first year, this perception becomes increasingly specialized. Infants usually become better tuned to distinctions that matter in the language or languages they regularly hear, while sensitivity to some unfamiliar distinctions declines.
Researchers call this process perceptual narrowing.
It is an important example of how development works: babies are not simply born with a finished language system waiting to activate. Their perceptual abilities are continuously shaped by experience.
Finding Patterns in Continuous Speech
There is another problem babies need to solve.
Spoken language does not arrive with spaces between words.
When you read:
Do you want your teddy bear?
the spaces make the word boundaries obvious. In ordinary speech, those boundaries are much less clear.
Yet during the first year, infants begin discovering recurring units inside this continuous stream.
One mechanism that appears to help is statistical learning: sensitivity to patterns in how sounds and syllables occur together.
In classic experiments, eight-month-old infants listened to continuous streams of unfamiliar syllables with no pauses marking individual “words.” After very brief exposure, they could distinguish sequences that regularly occurred together from sequences crossing the artificial word boundaries. Later studies have shown that infants use many other cues too, including rhythm, stress, familiar sounds, and properties of their language.
Babies are therefore doing something much more sophisticated than simply recording everything they hear.
They are gradually discovering structure inside the input.
From Cooing to Babbling
Language development is not only about listening. During the first year, babies increasingly experiment with producing sounds themselves.
Early vocal play often includes vowel-like sounds and cooing. Over the following months, more speech-like combinations begin to appear.
By around the middle of the first year, many infants enter what researchers call canonical babbling, producing syllable-like sequences such as:
ba-ba-ba
da-da-da
ma-ma-ma
The exact timing varies considerably between children, but canonical babbling commonly emerges during the second half of the first year.
Babbling is not yet ordinary speech and usually does not carry the stable meanings that words do. But it gives infants experience coordinating breathing, voice, jaw, lips, and tongue to produce increasingly speech-like patterns.
Importantly, babbling is also influenced by linguistic experience. Over time, features of children's vocal productions begin to reflect characteristics of the languages they hear.
And language development is not limited to speech.
Children exposed to a sign language from birth show comparable early patterned activity in the manual modality. Studies of deaf signing infants have described manual babbling: repetitive hand movements containing structural properties found in signed languages.
This provides an important clue about language development. Human language is not fundamentally tied to sound. The developing brain can build a linguistic system from accessible, structured language input in different modalities.
The First Words
For many children, recognizable first words appear around the end of the first year, although there is substantial normal variation.
Early vocabularies often contain names for familiar people, objects, routines, actions, and social expressions:
mama
ball
dog
bye-bye
more
up
These words have several possible advantages. Children encounter many of them repeatedly, they refer to things that are important in everyday interactions, and their meanings are often easier to infer from the surrounding situation.
But there is no simple formula determining which word a child will learn first.
Frequency matters, but so do context, pronunciation, interaction, attention, and what the people around the child tend to talk about.
A Word Is More Than a Sound
Learning a word involves solving several problems at once.
A child has to notice that a particular sound pattern forms a useful unit, remember it, determine what it probably refers to, and gradually learn how other people use it.
This mapping is not always obvious.
Imagine hearing someone say:
Look at the dax!
while several unfamiliar objects and actions are happening at once.
What exactly is dax?
A particular object? Its color? The action someone is performing? A part of the object?
Children repeatedly face versions of this problem. They use multiple sources of information — including the situation, previous experience, social cues, and patterns in the surrounding language — to narrow down possible meanings.
Word learning is therefore usually not a one-trial act of attaching a label to an object. Knowledge becomes richer across repeated encounters.
Does Vocabulary Suddenly Explode?
A well-known description of early language development is the vocabulary spurt or vocabulary explosion.
After producing a relatively small number of words, many toddlers do begin adding new words at an increasingly rapid rate during the second year of life.
But the simple textbook story — slow learning followed by a sudden universal explosion at around 18 months — is too neat.
Research finds substantial variation. Some children show a pronounced acceleration, others a much more gradual curve, and researchers do not agree that a distinct vocabulary spurt is a universal developmental stage.
Nor is there good reason to explain the change with one sudden realization that “everything has a name.”
Several abilities are developing at once. Children know more words, understand more about communication, become better at identifying patterns, improve at remembering word forms, and can use what they already know to help interpret new language.
The result is a learning system that becomes increasingly capable of learning from its own accumulated knowledge.
From Words to Combinations
At some point during the second year, many children begin combining words:
Daddy go
More milk
Big dog
These early combinations are often short, but they already express relationships between ideas: an object and its property, an agent and an action, an action and its object.
English-language research traditionally described this stage as telegraphic speech, because children often leave out articles, auxiliaries, and other grammatical elements.
But languages organize grammar in very different ways, so there is no single universal two-word template that every child follows.
Cross-linguistic research shows that children become sensitive surprisingly early to the particular structures of the language they are learning. What develops first, and what early utterances look like, depends partly on the grammatical system available in the child's input.
The broad pattern remains: vocabulary and grammar increasingly begin to work together, allowing children to express more complex meanings.
When Mistakes Reveal Learning
Some of the most interesting evidence about grammatical development comes from children's mistakes.
An English-learning child who has previously said went correctly may later begin saying:
goed
Similarly:
feet → foots
mice → mouses
These errors are called overregularizations.
They are interesting because forms such as goed usually did not come directly from adult speech. The child has detected a productive pattern — for example, that English past-tense verbs often end in -ed — and extended it to a word where it does not apply.
This does not mean children discover grammar as a neat collection of conscious rules. Language learning appears to involve an interaction between learned examples, recurring patterns, generalization, memory, and the structure of the language itself.
But errors such as goed demonstrate something important:
children can produce linguistic forms that they were never simply taught or asked to memorize.
They are generalizing from what they have experienced.
Different Languages Shape Different Developmental Paths
Children everywhere face some of the same broad challenges: discovering useful units, connecting forms with meanings, identifying recurring patterns, and eventually producing increasingly complex language.
But the details are strongly influenced by the language being learned.
Consider nouns and verbs.
English-learning children often show a strong early preference for nouns. This was once sometimes treated as a nearly universal property of vocabulary development.
Cross-linguistic evidence has made the picture more interesting.
A recent systematic review found an overall noun advantage across many languages, but also substantial variation between languages and cultures. Earlier work has found smaller or absent noun advantages in languages including Korean and Mandarin.
Similar variation occurs in grammar.
A child learning English must become highly sensitive to word order and auxiliary constructions. A child learning Spanish receives much richer information through verb inflections and grammatical gender. Other languages mark relationships using cases, particles, tones, classifiers, or structures that English does not have at all.
Children are not following one fixed grammatical roadmap.
They are solving a common human problem using evidence supplied by very different linguistic environments.
Language Development Is a System, Not a Checklist
It is tempting to summarize child language acquisition as:
sounds → babbling → words → two-word phrases → grammar
That is useful as a rough orientation, but real development is less orderly.
Listening, speech perception, gesture, vocabulary, social interaction, sound production, and grammar overlap and influence one another. Children also differ substantially in when particular abilities emerge and how quickly they develop.
A milestone therefore describes what often happens around a particular period. It is not a deadline or a precise schedule followed by every child.
More importantly, language development is cumulative.
Learning some sound patterns makes it easier to recognize familiar words. Knowing words provides clues about the structure of sentences. Understanding more sentences creates opportunities to learn more words. Interaction gives meaning to patterns that would otherwise be only sounds.
Each new piece of knowledge changes what the child can learn next.
What Can Adult Language Learners Take From This?
Infant language development cannot be turned directly into a learning program for adults. Adults have different brains, existing languages, knowledge of the world, goals, learning environments, and cognitive strategies.
Still, the developmental process highlights a few useful principles.
Become familiar with the sound system. Listening matters not because adults need to spend months silently absorbing a language, but because recognizing its sounds, rhythm, common words, and recurring patterns is part of becoming able to process it efficiently.
Look for patterns, not only translations. Knowing that a word means something is useful. Noticing what usually comes before and after it, how it changes, and in which situations it appears gives you much more of the language.
Expect knowledge to develop gradually. Recognizing a word, understanding it in context, recalling it, and using it fluently are not necessarily one event.
Use the language while the system is still incomplete. Children communicate long before their grammar is finished. Adults do not need to wait for perfect knowledge either. Speaking, writing, listening, reading, feedback, and deliberate study can develop alongside one another.
Perhaps the most interesting lesson is not that adults should imitate babies.
It is that language knowledge is built from interconnected experience.
Sounds become patterns. Patterns become familiar words. Words become part of larger structures. And every new piece of knowledge helps the learner make more sense of what comes next.
That process looks effortless from the outside.
Underneath, an extraordinary amount of learning is taking place.
