What imperatives and let’s do

Imperatives are action sentences. They let you give instructions, warnings, offers, and invitations without building a full subject sentence. The basic form is short: base verb first. “Come in.” can be friendly when the situation is friendly. Let’s is the partner form for shared action: “Let’s start.” It means the speaker is included, so it often sounds like a suggestion or invitation. These forms are common in classrooms, recipes, travel directions, work messages, apps, signs, and everyday conversation. The grammar is simple, but tone is important.

In a normal imperative, the subject you is understood, so you usually do not say it. Start with the base form of the verb, then add the object, place, time, or manner. “Open your books.” tells the listener to do the action. Use the base form with be too: “Be quiet for a minute.” For directions, the same logic works: “Turn left at the bank.” Do not add -s, past tense, or to before the main verb. The listener is already inside the sentence, even when the word you is silent.

Form variations

Negatives, please, and signs

Negative imperatives use don’t plus the base verb. The pattern is the same for action verbs and for be: “Don’t touch that cable.” “Don’t be late.” To make a request or instruction more polite, add please, often at the beginning: “Please wait here.” Please softens the form, but it does not remove all pressure; relationship and voice still matter. In official notices, safety rules, and written instructions, do not is common instead of don’t: “Do not enter.” In everyday speech, don’t is much more normal.

Let’s is a contraction of let us, but learners should treat it as a practical suggestion chunk. It is followed by the base verb, with no to. Use it when you want to include yourself in the action or build group agreement: “Let’s meet at six.” For a negative suggestion, use let’s not plus the base verb: “Let’s not worry about it.” Let’s can be warm and social, but it can also organize a group in a meeting, class, or family situation. The meaning is usually closer to I suggest this for us than I order you.

Two common mistakes come from adding extra words after the control word. Mistake: “Don’t to open the window.” Corrected: “Don’t open the window.” After don’t, use the base verb directly. Mistake: “Let’s to eat.” Corrected: “Let’s eat.” After let’s, also use the base verb directly. Another danger is adding you to an ordinary imperative. Tone and context

Choose the form by purpose and relationship. Use short imperatives for clear instructions, recipes, directions, and urgent warnings. Use please when the listener has a choice or when you want a warmer tone. Use a question request when a direct command could sound too strong. Use let’s when the action belongs to the speaker and listener together: planning, starting, stopping, moving, deciding. Use let’s not when you want the group to avoid an action. In writing, an exclamation mark makes the sentence feel urgent or emotional; for ordinary polite instructions, a period is safer.
