משמעות

We can identify someone or something by name or say what kind of person or thing it is. This can point to one particular person or thing, or place it in a group such as teachers or birds. Some languages connect the two parts with a verb, while others have no such verb or leave it out in some sentences. Unlike State and existence, this block names or classifies something rather than describing its condition, location, or existence.

איך לזהות

Look for a part that answers who or what someone or something is, rather than what they do or what condition they are in.

אנגלית

English uses a form of be before a name or noun to say who or what someone or something is. A singular noun for one member of a group normally needs a/an if it names something that can be counted. To identify a particular person or thing, English can use a name or a phrase such as the new teacher.

This is Emma.

A name identifies a particular person; no article is used before Emma.

Leo is a driver.

A driver places Leo in a group; the singular job noun needs a.

That building is the library.

The library identifies which building it is.

אתגר נפוץ בלמידה

Learners whose language omits the verb in sentences naming or classifying someone may leave out be. Learners whose language uses job nouns without an article may omit a/an.
