משמעות

A small word can add a limit, surprise or a hint of the speaker's attitude to a message. Such words shape how a message is understood rather than naming a person, thing or action. Languages use different sets of these words, and not every language has a separate word for each job; endings or the voice can express similar effects. What a word applies to describes the reach of a word's meaning; Particles describes one kind of word that can have this effect.

איך לזהות

Look for short words that limit, highlight or shade a message, and compare what the message means with and without them.

אנגלית

English uses small words such as only, even and just to limit or highlight information or to soften a request. These words can function as particles: their job is to shape the message, and they do not change their form. Their position helps show which part of the message they affect.

I have only ten minutes.

Only limits the amount of time and suggests that it is not much.

Even Tom liked the soup.

Tom is presented as someone who was not expected to like it.

Could you just wait a minute?

In a friendly request, just can make the favor sound small; an impatient voice can change its effect.

אתגר נפוץ בלמידה

Learners whose language places similar words elsewhere may attach a limit or surprise to the wrong part of the message. Learners whose language uses different ways to soften requests may miss the effect of just or use it where it sounds impatient.
