Obligation
Does someone need to do it?
의미
Obligation shows that an action is required or necessary. Advice is weaker: it says what would be best, rather than what is required. Languages use special verb forms or separate words and phrases, and some have no special obligation form. Permission concerns what someone is allowed to do, not what they need to do.
알아보는 방법
Look for what makes an action necessary or expected, and check whether the speaker presents it as a firm requirement or weaker advice.
모국어에서는
Korean expresses a requirement or necessity with -아/어야 하다 or -아/어야 되다. -아/어야겠다 often presents something the speaker decides is necessary. To say that an action is unnecessary, use patterns such as -(으)ㄹ 필요가 없다; -(으)면 안 되다 instead forbids it.
내일까지 이 일을 끝내야 해요. (Naeilkkaji i ireul kkeunnaeya haeyo.)
좀 쉬어야겠어요. (Jom swieoyagesseoyo.)
The speaker presents resting as a necessity they have recognized.
오늘은 예약할 필요가 없어요. (Oneureun yeyakal piryoga eopseoyo.)
This removes a requirement; it does not forbid making a reservation.
