Permission
Is someone allowed to do it?
의미
Permission tells us whether an action is allowed. A person may give permission, and a rule may allow or forbid an action. Languages use special verb forms, small words, or expressions for this, and some have no separate permission form. Possibility concerns whether something can happen, not whether it is allowed.
알아보는 방법
Look for whether a person or rule allows or forbids an action, rather than whether someone can manage it.
모국어에서는
Korean uses -아/어도 되다 to say that an action is allowed, and the same pattern can ask for permission. -(으)면 안 되다 says that an action is not allowed. These patterns express permission rather than personal skill or physical possibility.
이 의자에 앉아도 돼요? (I uijae anjado dwaeyo?)
-아도 돼요 asks whether the action is allowed.
여기서는 사진을 찍으면 안 돼요. (Yeogiseoneun sajineul jjigeumyeon an dwaeyo.)
-으면 안 돼요 expresses a prohibition.
