Talk about the photos on your phone or in an album. In this set, you meet everyday words to point out where people are in the frame, say what they are doing and wearing, and share simple memories.

  • Notice how French uses sur la photo (on the photo) rather than 'in'.
  • Learn position words in pairs like à gauche and à droite, or devant and derrière.
  • Practice by opening your own camera roll and describing two or three pictures out loud.

Voca 카드

1.
la photo
photo, picture

J'ai beaucoup de photos sur mon téléphone.
I have a lot of photos on my phone.
Short for 'la photographie', which nobody uses in everyday conversation. Even though it ends in '-o', it is feminine.
2.
regarder
to look, to look at

Regarde, c'est notre voyage en Italie.
Look, this is our trip to Italy.
Unlike in English, you do not put a preposition like 'at' after 'regarder'.
3.
prendre une photo
to take a photo, to take a picture

Mon ami prend toujours de très bonnes photos.
My friend always takes really good photos.
4.
sur la photo
in the photo, in the picture

There are six people in the photo.
French uses 'sur' (on) for pictures and screens, not 'dans' (in).
5.

À gauche, c'est mon collègue Thomas.
On the left, that's my coworker Thomas.
6.

7.

I'm in the middle, in the blue T-shirt.
Add 'de' to say 'in the middle of' something, like 'au milieu de la place'.
8.
à côté de
next to, beside

Qui est le garçon à côté de toi ?
Who is the boy next to you?
Changes to 'à côté du' before a masculine noun and 'à côté des' before a plural noun.
9.
devant
in front of

Nous sommes devant le musée du Louvre.
We're in front of the Louvre Museum.
10.
derrière

On voit la mer juste derrière nous.
You can see the sea right behind us.
11.
assis
sitting, seated

The final 's' is silent for a man or a mixed group ('assis'), and pronounced 'z' for a woman ('assise').
12.
debout
standing

Tout le monde est debout près de la table.
Everyone is standing near the table.
An adverb, so its spelling never changes for feminine or plural.
13.

You always smile in photos!
'Un sourire' is also the noun for 'a smile'.
14.

This picture is a good memory of our summer.
In French, 'un souvenir' usually means a memory in your mind, not just an object you buy on holiday.
