I am finishing my story now. There are still many questions without answers. I want to talk about these questions. Scientists have many different ideas. I think a scientist named Carver is right. He thinks the Martians died because of bacteria (very small living things that can cause disease). I believe this is the truth.

Scientists examined the dead bodies of the Martians. They found the same bacteria that live on Earth. The Martians did not know about these tiny things. They did not bury their dead. They did not understand that dead things rot. They were not ready for the diseases of our world.

We still do not know what the Black Smoke was. It was very deadly to humans. We also do not know how the Heat-Ray worked. Some scientists tried to study the Martian machines. But there were accidents in the laboratories. These accidents were very dangerous. So, the scientists stopped their work for now.

The black powder is also a mystery. It has a strange element in it. This element might mix with argon (a type of gas) to kill people. But we are not sure. We cannot study the red plants in the river anymore. All the plants are gone now.

Dogs ate some of the Martians after they died. This made it hard to study their bodies. But there is a good specimen (an example of a thing used for science) in a museum. It is kept in a jar of liquid. Many people go to the museum to see it. They draw pictures of the Martian’s body.

Will the Martians attack us again? This is a very important question. I think we must be careful. We should watch the planet Mars with telescopes. We can find the place where they fire their big gun. We must be ready for the next attack.

If another cylinder (a large metal tube) falls, we must destroy it quickly. We can use artillery (large, heavy guns) or dynamite (a powerful substance that explodes). We can kill the Martians before they come out. The Martians will not surprise us a second time.

One scientist has a new idea. He thinks the Martians are now on the planet Venus. Seven months ago, Mars and Venus were in a line with the sun. Scientists saw strange marks on Venus. Then they saw similar marks on Mars. Maybe the Martians went to Venus because it was safer.

This war changed our ideas about the future. We know now that Earth is not always safe. Danger can come from space at any time. But the war also helped humans. It taught us more about science. It also made all humans work together. We are now one people.

Before the war, we thought we were alone in space. Now we know the truth. If Martians can go to Venus, maybe humans can go too. One day, the sun will get cold. Earth will be too cold for life. Then, humans might move to another planet. But that is a dream for the future.

I still feel a lot of fear. The danger changed my mind. Sometimes I sit in my room and I see the fire again. I feel like my house is empty and sad. I walk on the road and see people. I see a boy or a worker on a bicycle. But suddenly, they do not feel real.

I remember running with the artilleryman (the soldier from the hill). At night, I dream about the black powder. I see dead bodies in my dreams. The bodies look scary and grey. I wake up feeling very cold in the dark night.

I go to London and see the busy crowds. The people look like ghosts to me. I remember when the streets were silent and dead. I went to Primrose Hill again yesterday. I saw children playing near the Martian machine. The machine is still there on the hill.

I remember the morning when I found the dead Martians. It was very quiet and clear then. Now, I hear the sound of children playing. It is a very strange change.

The strangest thing is holding my wife’s hand. For a long time, I thought she was dead. She also thought I was dead. Now, we are together again in our home.
