Ben: Welcome back to Vocafy Language in Real Life. I'm Ben, here again with Clara. Today we're looking at a language spoken across a huge part of the world, from the Atlantic coast of North Africa to the Arabian Peninsula and beyond.

अरबी.

Arabic.

पण क्लारा, एखादी व्यक्ती ‘अरबी बोलते’ असे म्हटल्याने ती नेमकी कोणती अरबी बोलते, हे नेहमीच स्पष्ट होत नाही.

But Clara, saying someone "speaks Arabic" doesn't always tell us exactly what Arabic they speak.

क्लारा: सुरुवात करण्यासाठी हाच अगदी योग्य मुद्दा आहे.

Clara: That's the perfect place to start.

अरबीमध्ये शिकणाऱ्यांसाठी एक वेगळे वैशिष्ट्य आहे. तिचे एक व्यापकपणे सामायिक प्रमाणरूप आहे; मात्र दैनंदिन बोलणे एका ठिकाणाहून दुसऱ्या ठिकाणी खूप बदलू शकते.

Arabic has something unusual for learners. There is a widely shared standard form, but everyday speech can vary greatly from one place to another.

मोरोक्कोमधील संभाषण इजिप्त, लेबनॉन किंवा इराकमधील संभाषणापेक्षा अगदी वेगळे वाटू शकते, जरी हे सगळे भाषक आपण बोलतो त्याला अरबीच म्हणत असले तरी.

A conversation in Morocco might sound very different from one in Egypt, Lebanon or Iraq, even though the speakers may all describe what they speak as Arabic.

बेन: मग अरबी ही प्रत्यक्षात एक भाषा आहे की भाषांचा समूह?

Ben: So is Arabic actually one language or a group of languages?

क्लारा: इथेच गोष्ट रंजक होते.

Clara: That's where things become interesting.

याचे एकच सरळ उत्तर नाही, कारण ‘भाषा’ आणि ‘बोलीभाषा’ ही केवळ भाषाशास्त्रीय लेबले नाहीत. इतिहास, संस्कृती आणि अस्मिताही महत्त्वाची असते.

There isn't one simple answer, because "language" and "dialect" aren't purely linguistic labels. History, culture and identity matter too.

बहुतेक भाषक स्वतःला अरबी बोलणारे मानतात आणि संपूर्ण प्रदेशाला जोडणारी एक सामायिक लिखित व औपचारिक भाषा अस्तित्वात आहे.

Most speakers see themselves as speaking Arabic, and there is a shared written and formal language connecting the region.

त्याच वेळी, दैनंदिन जीवनात बोलल्या जाणाऱ्या भाषाप्रकारांमध्ये उच्चार, शब्दसंग्रह आणि व्याकरणाच्या बाबतीत लक्षणीय फरक असू शकतात.

At the same time, the everyday spoken varieties can differ substantially in pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar.

भाषाशास्त्रज्ञ या परिस्थितीची चर्चा करताना अनेकदा ‘डायग्लॉसिया’ ही संज्ञा वापरतात.

Linguists often discuss this situation using the term diglossia.

बेन: हा असा शब्द आहे, जो त्यामागच्या कल्पनेपेक्षा कितीतरी अधिक गुंतागुंतीचा वाटतो.

Ben: That's one of those words that sounds much more complicated than the idea behind it.

इथे डायग्लॉसिया म्हणजे नेमके काय?

What does diglossia mean here?

क्लारा: अगदी साध्या शब्दांत सांगायचे तर, भाषेची वेगवेगळी रूपे वेगवेगळ्या उद्देशांसाठी वापरली जातात.

Clara: In the simplest version, it means that different forms of a language are used for different purposes.

अरबीचे एक प्रमाणरूप विशेषतः लेखन आणि औपचारिक संवादासाठी वापरले जाते, तर लोक सहसा घरात स्थानिक भाषाप्रकार बोलतच मोठे होतात.

Arabic has a standard form used especially for writing and formal communication, while people usually grow up speaking a local variety at home.

आज या प्रमाणरूपाला सामान्यतः आधुनिक प्रमाण अरबी किंवा एमएसए असे म्हणतात.

The standard form today is usually called Modern Standard Arabic, or MSA.

पण इथे एक महत्त्वाचा तपशील आहे.

But there's an important detail.

प्रत्यक्षात जग इतके नीट दोन कप्प्यांत विभागलेले नाही—एका कप्प्यावर एमएसए आणि दुसऱ्यावर बोलीभाषा अशी पाटी लावता येत नाही.

It isn't really a neat world with two boxes, one labelled MSA and the other labelled dialect.

बेन: असे का?

Ben: Why not?

क्लारा: कारण प्रत्यक्ष बोलणे त्यापेक्षा खूपच अधिक सरमिसळ असलेले असते.

Clara: Because real speech is much messier.

परिस्थितीनुसार लोक अधिक औपचारिक आणि अधिक संवादात्मक भाषेदरम्यान सहज वावरू शकतात. ते आपल्या स्थानिक बोलण्यातील घटकांमध्ये प्रमाणभाषेची वैशिष्ट्ये मिसळू शकतात.

People can move between more formal and more conversational language depending on the situation. They may mix standard features with elements of their local speech.

विद्यापीठातील चर्चा, दूरचित्रवाणीवरील मुलाखत किंवा राजकीय वादविवाद हे मित्रांमधील संभाषणापेक्षा अधिक औपचारिक वाटू शकतात; मात्र त्यामुळे ते पूर्णपणे पाठ्यपुस्तकी एमएसए होतीलच असे नाही.

A university discussion, a television interview or a political debate might sound more formal than a conversation between friends, without necessarily becoming pure textbook MSA.

म्हणून याकडे एक सलग पट्टा म्हणून पाहणे अनेकदा अधिक योग्य ठरते.

So it's often better to imagine a spectrum.

एका टोकाला अत्यंत औपचारिक प्रमाण अरबी असते. दुसऱ्या टोकाला अगदी स्थानिक दैनंदिन बोलणे असते. आणि लोक या दोन्ही टोकांदरम्यान सहज वावरू शकतात.

At one end you have highly formal Standard Arabic. At the other you have very local everyday speech. And people can move around between them.

बेन: चला, औपचारिक टोकापासून सुरुवात करूया.

Ben: Let's start with the formal end.

आधुनिक प्रमाण अरबी म्हणजे नेमके काय?

What exactly is Modern Standard Arabic?

क्लारा: एमएसए हे अभिजात अरबीवर जवळून आधारित असलेले अरबीचे आधुनिक प्रमाणित रूप आहे.

Clara: MSA is the modern standardized form of Arabic closely based on Classical Arabic.

बहुतेक औपचारिक लिखाणातून शिकणाऱ्यांचा परिचय याच भाषेशी होतो. ती पुस्तके, वर्तमानपत्रे, अधिकृत कागदपत्रे आणि अनेक शैक्षणिक सामग्रीमध्ये दिसते.

It is the language learners encounter in most formal writing. You'll see it in books, newspapers, official documents and much educational material.

बातम्यांचे प्रसारण, पूर्वतयारी केलेली भाषणे, माहितीपट आणि इतर औपचारिक प्रसंगांमध्येही तिची विविध रूपे ऐकू येतात.

You'll also hear forms of it in news broadcasts, prepared speeches, documentaries and other formal settings.

अरबी भाषिक जगाला व्यापकपणे सामायिक असलेली लिखित भाषा उपलब्ध करून देणे, ही तिची एक मोठी ताकद आहे.

One of its great strengths is that it gives the Arabic-speaking world a broadly shared written language.

बेन: म्हणजे मोरोक्कोमधील आणि ओमानमधील व्यक्ती वर्तमानपत्रातील एकच लेख वाचू शकतात.

Ben: So someone in Morocco and someone in Oman could read the same newspaper article.

क्लारा: अगदी बरोबर—अर्थात, दोघांनाही प्रमाण अरबीवर चांगले प्रभुत्व असेल तर.

Clara: Exactly, assuming both have a good command of Standard Arabic.

पण याचा अर्थ ते न्याहारीच्या वेळीही नेहमी त्याच पद्धतीने बोलतात, असा होत नाही.

But that doesn't mean they normally speak that way over breakfast.

मुले सहसा आपल्या कुटुंबाचा आणि समुदायाचा अरबी भाषाप्रकार बोलतच मोठी होतात. शाळा, वाचन, माध्यमे आणि औपचारिक व्यवहारांमुळे प्रमाण अरबीचे महत्त्व खूप वाढते.

Children typically grow up speaking the Arabic variety of their family and community. Standard Arabic becomes much more important through school, reading, media and formal life.

बेन: म्हणजे एमएसए ही सहसा मुलाने आपल्या पालकांकडून सर्वप्रथम शिकलेली भाषा नसते.

Ben: So MSA isn't normally the language a child first learns from their parents.

क्लारा: बरोबर.

Clara: Right.

अरबी शिकणाऱ्यांना ती वेगळी वाटण्याचे हे एक कारण आहे.

That's one reason Arabic can feel unusual to learners.

कल्पना करा की आपण इंग्रजी शिकत आहात; पण पुस्तके, बातम्या आणि शाळेत वापरली जाणारी भाषा, लोक आपल्या कुटुंबीयांसोबत सहजपणे वापरतात त्या भाषेपेक्षा स्पष्टपणे वेगळी आहे.

Imagine learning English, but discovering that the language of books, news and school is noticeably different from the language people naturally use with their families.

ही तुलना पूर्णपणे अचूक नाही; पण त्यांच्यातील अंतराची कल्पना ती नक्कीच देते.

The comparison isn't perfect, but it gives you a sense of the distance involved.

बेन: आणि अरबी भाषिक जगाच्या वेगवेगळ्या भागांमध्ये हे अंतर किती मोठे असू शकते?

Ben: And how large can that distance become between different parts of the Arabic-speaking world?

क्लारा: बरेच मोठे.

Clara: Quite large.

इजिप्शियन, लेव्हँटाइन, आखाती, इराकी आणि मघरेबी अरबी असे व्यापक गट आहेत आणि त्या प्रत्येकामध्ये आणखी अनेक प्रादेशिक व स्थानिक फरक आढळतात.

There are broad groups such as Egyptian, Levantine, Gulf, Iraqi and Maghrebi Arabic, and within those there are many more regional and local differences.

शेजारच्या प्रदेशांतील भाषाप्रकार समजणे भाषकांना अनेकदा तुलनेने सोपे जाते, तर दूरच्या प्रदेशांतील भाषाप्रकार समजणे खूप कठीण असू शकते.

Neighbouring varieties are often relatively easy for speakers to understand, while varieties from distant regions can be much harder.

पण भौगोलिक अंतर हा एकमेव घटक नाही.

But geography isn't the only factor.

एखादा भाषाप्रकार किती ऐकला आहे, हेदेखील महत्त्वाचे असते.

Exposure matters too.

एखादा विशिष्ट भाषाप्रकार आपण अनेक वर्षे दूरचित्रवाणी, संगीत किंवा ऑनलाइन माध्यमांतून ऐकला असेल, तर केवळ भौगोलिक अंतरावरून अपेक्षित असेल त्यापेक्षा तो आपल्याला खूप चांगला समजू शकतो.

If you've spent years hearing a particular variety in television, music or online media, you may understand it much better than geographical distance alone would suggest.

बेन: आणि यामुळे आपण इजिप्तकडे येतो.

Ben: Which brings us to Egypt.

या कथनाच्या मूळ आवृत्तीत इजिप्शियन अरबीला बहुधा अरब जगताची अनधिकृत सामायिक भाषा म्हटले गेले असते.

The original version of this story would probably call Egyptian Arabic the unofficial common language of the Arab world.

हे जरा अतिशयोक्तीचे ठरेल का?

Is that going too far?

क्लारा: हो; पण त्यामागे एक महत्त्वाचे सत्य आहे.

Clara: Yes, but there's an important truth behind it.

विसाव्या शतकात अरबी भाषेतील लोकप्रिय संस्कृतीवर इजिप्तचा प्रचंड प्रभाव होता.

Egypt had an enormous influence on Arabic-language popular culture during the twentieth century.

इजिप्शियन चित्रपट, गाणी, आकाशवाणीवरील कार्यक्रम आणि दूरचित्रवाणी मालिका संपूर्ण प्रदेशात पोहोचल्या. त्यामुळे स्वतः इजिप्शियन अरबी न बोलणाऱ्या प्रचंड संख्येने लोकांनाही ती परिचित झाली.

Egyptian films, songs, radio programmes and television travelled throughout the region. As a result, Egyptian Arabic became familiar to huge numbers of people who didn't speak it themselves.

बेन: म्हणजे एखाद्याला इजिप्शियन अरबी काही प्रमाणात यासाठी समजू शकते की ते इजिप्शियन चित्रपट पाहत मोठे झाले आहेत.

Ben: So someone might understand Egyptian Arabic partly because they grew up watching Egyptian movies.

क्लारा: अगदी बरोबर.

Clara: Exactly.

भाषेच्या विविध रूपांमधील परस्पर आकलन माध्यमांमुळे कसे बदलू शकते, याचे हे उत्तम उदाहरण आहे.

It's a great example of how media can change mutual understanding between language varieties.

इजिप्शियन अरबीने इतर देशांतील स्थानिक बोलण्याची जागा घेतली नाही आणि वेगवेगळ्या प्रदेशांतील लोक भेटल्यावर आपोआप इजिप्शियन अरबीवर वळतही नाहीत.

Egyptian Arabic didn't replace the local speech of other countries, and people from different regions don't automatically switch to Egyptian when they meet.

पण अनेक दशकांच्या लोकप्रिय संस्कृतीमुळे ती अरबीच्या सर्वाधिक ओळखल्या जाणाऱ्या बोलभाषांपैकी एक बनली.

But decades of popular culture made it one of the most widely recognised spoken forms of Arabic.

बेन: दोन अरबी भाषकांना एकमेकांचे स्थानिक बोलणे सहज समजत नसेल, तर ते काय करतात?

Ben: What happens when two Arabic speakers don't easily understand each other's local speech?

क्लारा: ते आपले बोलणे परिस्थितीनुसार बदलतात.

Clara: They adapt.

ते अगदी खास स्थानिक वाक्प्रचार टाळू शकतात. समोरच्या व्यक्तीला समजेल अशी अपेक्षा असलेला शब्दसंग्रह वापरू शकतात. ते अधिक व्यापकपणे समजल्या जाणाऱ्या रूपांकडे वळू शकतात किंवा प्रमाण अरबीतील घटक वापरू शकतात.

They might avoid strongly local expressions. They may use vocabulary they expect the other person to recognise. They can move toward more widely understood forms or bring in elements of Standard Arabic.

नेमकी कोणती पद्धत वापरायची, हे भाषक, त्यांची पार्श्वभूमी आणि परिस्थिती यांवर अवलंबून असते.

The exact strategy depends on the speakers, their backgrounds and the situation.

‘एमएसए विरुद्ध बोलीभाषा’ हे साधे चित्र प्रत्यक्ष जीवनाचे पूर्ण स्वरूप दाखवत नाही, याचे हे आणखी एक कारण आहे.

That's another reason the simple picture of "MSA versus dialect" doesn't quite capture real life.

बेन: आता जवळजवळ प्रत्येक शिकणाऱ्याच्या लगेच लक्षात येणारी गोष्ट पाहूया.

Ben: Let's look at something that almost every learner notices immediately.

लेखनपद्धती.

The writing system.

क्लारा: अरबी उजवीकडून डावीकडे लिहिली जाते आणि शब्दात अक्षर कुठे आले आहे त्यानुसार त्याचे रूप बदलते.

Clara: Arabic is written from right to left, and its letters change shape depending on where they appear in a word.

सुरुवातीला हे कठीण वाटू शकते; पण दिसते त्यापेक्षा ही पद्धत खूपच नियमित आहे.

That can look difficult at first, but the system is much more regular than it may appear.

बहुतेक अक्षरे शेजारच्या अक्षरांना जोडली जातात. त्यामुळे लिखित अरबीला ते ओघवते रूप मिळते आणि ती लगेच ओळखू येते.

Most letters connect to the letters around them, so written Arabic has that flowing appearance that makes it instantly recognisable.

शिकणाऱ्यांना आश्चर्य वाटावे असे आणखी एक वैशिष्ट्यही आहे.

There is another feature that surprises learners too.

सामान्य मजकुरात ऱ्हस्व स्वर अनेकदा लिहिले जात नाहीत.

Short vowels are often not written in ordinary texts.

बेन: मग शब्द कसा वाचायचा हे लोकांना कसे कळते?

Ben: So how do people know what the word says?

क्लारा: मुख्यतः शब्दसंग्रह, व्याकरण आणि संदर्भावरून.

Clara: Mostly from vocabulary, grammar and context.

गरजेनुसार अतिरिक्त स्वरचिन्हे लावता येतात. ती विशेषतः लहान मुलांची पुस्तके, धार्मिक ग्रंथ आणि शिकणाऱ्यांसाठीची सामग्री यांमध्ये उपयुक्त ठरतात.

Extra vowel marks can be added when needed, and they're especially useful in children's books, religious texts and materials for learners.

पण अनुभवी वाचकांना सामान्य मजकूर वाचण्यासाठी सहसा त्यांची गरज पडत नाही.

But experienced readers usually don't need them for ordinary text.

बेन: हे कठीण वाटते.

Ben: That sounds difficult.

क्लारा: सुरुवातीला तसे असू शकते.

Clara: At first it can be.

पण शब्दसंग्रह समजून घेण्यासाठी अरबी शिकणाऱ्यांना आणखी एक प्रभावी संकेत देते—तो म्हणजे शब्दमुळे आणि रचनाबंधांची तिची पद्धत.

But Arabic also gives learners another powerful clue to vocabulary, and that's its system of roots and patterns.

अरबीतील अनेक शब्द तीन व्यंजने असलेल्या एका शब्दमुळाभोवती तयार होतात.

Many Arabic words are built around a root containing three consonants.

लेखनाशी संबंधित K-T-B हे त्याचे एक प्रसिद्ध उदाहरण आहे.

A classic example is K-T-B, which is associated with writing.

या शब्दकुळातून पुस्तकासाठी kitaab, लेखकासाठी kaatib, कार्यालय किंवा लेखनमेजेसाठी maktab आणि ग्रंथालय किंवा पुस्तकांच्या दुकानासाठी maktaba असे शब्द मिळतात.

From this family you get words such as kitaab for book, kaatib for writer, maktab for office or desk, and maktaba for library or bookshop.

बेन: अरबीतील हे माझ्या आवडत्या वैशिष्ट्यांपैकी एक आहे.

Ben: That's one of my favourite features of Arabic.

K-T-B ओळखू येऊ लागल्यावर हे शब्द पूर्णपणे असंबंधित वाटेनासे होतात.

Once you recognise K-T-B, those words stop looking completely unrelated.

क्लारा: अगदी बरोबर.

Clara: Exactly.

याकडे असा संकेतकोड म्हणून पाहू नये, ज्यामुळे प्रत्येक शब्दाचा अर्थ आपोआप ओळखता येईल.

You shouldn't think of it as a code that lets you automatically guess every word.

भाषा कधीच इतकी सरळ साथ देत नाही.

Language is never quite that cooperative.

पण शब्दमुळांमुळे अरबीतील प्रचंड शब्दसंग्रह शब्दकुळांमध्ये मांडता येतो.

But roots help organise a huge amount of Arabic vocabulary into families.

अपरिचित शब्दांमध्ये परिचित शब्दमुळे ओळखू येऊ लागली की, भाषा खूपच कमी विस्कळीत वाटू लागते.

Once learners start recognising familiar roots inside unfamiliar words, the language can begin to feel much less random.

बेन: आणि मग उच्चार आहेत.

Ben: And then there are the sounds.

अरबीचे उच्चार करणे कठीण असते, अशी तिची ख्याती आहे.

Arabic has a reputation for being difficult to pronounce.

क्लारा: अरबीमध्ये असे अनेक ध्वनी आहेत, ज्यांची इंग्रजी भाषकांना सवय नसते.

Clara: It does contain several sounds that English speakers aren't used to.

अरबीतील ‘अइन’ या अक्षराने दर्शवला जाणारा ध्वनी हे त्याचे एक प्रसिद्ध उदाहरण आहे.

One famous example is the sound represented by the Arabic letter ayn.

अरबीतील काही व्यंजनांमधील फरक शिकणाऱ्यांना सुरुवातीला अगदी सारखे वाटू शकतात; पण मूळ भाषकांसाठी ते वेगवेगळे शब्द ओळखण्यास मदत करतात.

Arabic also has consonant contrasts that can initially sound very similar to learners but distinguish words for native speakers.

आव्हान केवळ एकदा एखादा अपरिचित ध्वनी काढण्याचे नसते.

The challenge isn't simply producing an unusual sound once.

तो फरक सातत्याने ऐकता आला पाहिजे आणि नंतर शब्द व वाक्यांमध्ये तो ध्वनी सहजपणे उच्चारता आला पाहिजे.

You have to learn to hear the difference reliably and then produce it naturally inside words and sentences.

बेन: प्रादेशिक भाषाप्रकारांनुसार उच्चारही बदलतात का?

Ben: Does pronunciation vary between the regional varieties too?

क्लारा: खूपच बदलतात.

Clara: Very much so.

अरबी भाषिक जगाच्या वेगवेगळ्या भागांत लिखित स्वरूपातील एकाच अक्षराचा उच्चार वेगवेगळ्या प्रकारे होऊ शकतो.

The same written letter can be pronounced differently in different parts of the Arabic-speaking world.

त्यामुळे आपण नेमका कोणता भाषाप्रकार ऐकत आहोत, हे जाणून घेण्याचे शिकणाऱ्यांकडे आणखी एक चांगले कारण असते.

That gives learners another good reason to know which variety they're listening to.

प्रभुत्व मिळवण्यासाठी सर्वत्र वापरला जाणारा एकच दैनंदिन अरबी उच्चार अस्तित्वात नाही.

There isn't just one universal everyday Arabic accent waiting to be mastered.

बेन: आणि आता आपण या संपूर्ण भागातील कदाचित सर्वांत महत्त्वाच्या व्यावहारिक प्रश्नाकडे येतो.

Ben: And that brings us to probably the biggest practical question in the entire episode.

मी आजच अरबी शिकायचे ठरवले, तर प्रत्यक्षात काय शिकावे?

If I decide today that I want to learn Arabic, what should I actually learn?

एमएसए की बोलला जाणारा एखादा भाषाप्रकार?

MSA or one of the spoken varieties?

क्लारा: याचे सर्वोत्तम उत्तर त्रासदायक वाटावे इतके साधे आहे.

Clara: The best answer is frustratingly simple.

आपल्याला काय करायचे आहे, यावर ते अवलंबून आहे.

It depends on what you want to do.

आपल्याला वर्तमानपत्रे आणि पुस्तके वाचायची असतील, औपचारिक बातम्या समजून घ्यायच्या असतील, लिखित अरबीमध्ये काम करायचे असेल किंवा वेगवेगळ्या देशांतील लोकांशी औपचारिक संदर्भात संवाद साधायचा असेल, तर एमएसए अत्यंत उपयुक्त आहे.

If you want to read newspapers and books, follow formal news, work with written Arabic or communicate across countries in formal contexts, MSA is extremely valuable.

आपण जॉर्डनला राहायला जात असाल आणि कॅफे, दुकाने व दैनंदिन जीवनात लोकांशी बोलणे हे आपले मुख्य उद्दिष्ट असेल, तर बोलली जाणारी लेव्हँटाइन अरबी लगेचच उपयोगी ठरेल.

If you're moving to Jordan and your main goal is talking to people in cafés, shops and everyday life, spoken Levantine Arabic will be immediately useful.

आपण कैरोमध्ये राहत असाल, तर दैनंदिन वापरासाठी इजिप्शियन अरबी ही स्वाभाविक निवड ठरते.

If you're living in Cairo, Egyptian Arabic becomes the obvious everyday choice.

बेन: म्हणजे एमएसए ही प्रत्येक संभाषणाचे दार आपोआप उघडणारी सर्वकष किल्ली नाही.

Ben: So MSA isn't the master key that automatically unlocks every conversation.

क्लारा: अगदी बरोबर.

Clara: Exactly.

ती आपल्याला अरबीच्या सामायिक आणि अत्यंत महत्त्वाच्या भागापर्यंत पोहोचवते—विशेषतः लिखित आणि औपचारिक भाषेपर्यंत.

It gives you access to a shared and enormously important part of Arabic, especially the written and formal language.

पण एमएसए येत असल्याने प्रत्येक देशातील वेगवान दैनंदिन संभाषण आपोआप समजेलच असे नाही.

But knowing MSA doesn't automatically mean you'll understand rapid everyday conversation in every country.

याच्या उलटही तितकेच खरे आहे.

The reverse is also true.

केवळ एक स्थानिक भाषाप्रकार शिकलेली व्यक्ती त्या प्रदेशात उत्तम संवाद साधू शकते; पण तरीही तिला औपचारिक लिखाण कठीण वाटू शकते.

Someone who learns only one local variety may communicate very well in that region while still finding formal writing difficult.

बेन: शिकणाऱ्यांनी यांपैकी एकच निवडून दुसऱ्याकडे दुर्लक्ष करावे लागते का?

Ben: Do learners have to choose one and ignore the other?

क्लारा: अजिबात नाही.

Clara: Not at all.

मनापासून अरबी शिकणाऱ्या अनेकांसाठी एका बोलभाषेसोबत काही प्रमाणात एमएसए शिकणे खूप उपयुक्त ठरते.

For many serious learners, learning some MSA alongside one spoken variety makes a lot of sense.

एमएसएमधून लिपी, वाचन आणि व्यापक औपचारिक शब्दसंग्रह शिकता येतो; त्याच वेळी आपल्या जीवनाशी सर्वाधिक संबंधित असलेल्या भाषाप्रकारातील ऐकण्याचे आणि बोलण्याचे कौशल्य हळूहळू विकसित करता येते.

You might learn the script, reading and broader formal vocabulary through MSA while gradually building your listening and speaking skills in the variety most relevant to your life.

आपल्या उद्दिष्टांनुसार यांपैकी प्रत्येकाला किती महत्त्व द्यायचे, हे बदलू शकते.

How much attention you give each one can change with your goals.

बेन: सगळ्यांनी आधी दोन वर्षे एमएसए शिकावे आणि त्यानंतरच लोक प्रत्यक्षात कसे बोलतात ते शिकण्यास सुरुवात करावी, असे म्हणण्यापेक्षा हे अधिक वास्तववादी वाटते.

Ben: That feels more realistic than saying everyone should spend two years on MSA and only then start learning how people actually talk.

क्लारा: निश्चितच अधिक वास्तववादी.

Clara: Much more realistic.

प्रत्येक शिकणाऱ्यासाठी एकच योग्य मार्ग नसतो.

There isn't one correct route for every learner.

अरबी साहित्याचा अभ्यास करणाऱ्या व्यक्तीच्या गरजा बेरूतला स्थलांतरित होणाऱ्या व्यक्तीपेक्षा वेगळ्या असतात आणि या दोघांच्याही गरजा केवळ नातेवाइकांशी बोलू इच्छिणाऱ्या व्यक्तीपेक्षा वेगळ्या असतात.

Someone studying Arabic literature has different needs from someone moving to Beirut, and both have different needs from someone who simply wants to speak with relatives.

अरबीची वेगवेगळी रूपे वेगवेगळ्या उद्देशांसाठी वापरली जातात, हे सुरुवातीपासून समजून घेणे महत्त्वाचे आहे.

The important thing is to understand from the beginning that Arabic has different forms serving different purposes.

मग ही विविधता नंतर अचानक आश्चर्यचकित करणारी गोष्ट न राहता, आधीच नियोजन करता येणारी बाब बनते.

Then the variation becomes something you can plan for rather than something that surprises you later.

बेन: आणि यामुळे आपण पुन्हा आपल्या शीर्षकाकडे येतो.

Ben: Which brings us back to our title.

एक भाषा, हजार आवाज.

One language, a thousand voices.

क्लारा: अगदी बरोबर.

Clara: Exactly.

अर्थात, इथला ‘हजार’ हा शब्द काव्यात्मक आहे; पण त्यामागची कल्पना महत्त्वाची आहे.

The "thousand" is poetic, of course, but the idea matters.

अरबीला एक प्रभावी सामायिक परंपरा आणि व्यापकपणे वापरले जाणारे प्रमाणरूप आहे; तर दैनंदिन बोलण्यात तिचा वापर करणाऱ्या लोकांचा विशाल भौगोलिक विस्तार आणि विविधता प्रतिबिंबित होते.

Arabic has a powerful shared tradition and a widely used standard form, while everyday speech reflects the enormous geography and diversity of the people who use it.

या दोन्ही गोष्टी एकमेकींना नाकारत नाहीत.

Those two things don't cancel each other out.

दोन्हीही अरबीचाच भाग आहेत.

They're both part of Arabic.

बेन: मग अरबी खरोखर एकच भाषा आहे की प्रत्यक्षात अनेक भाषा आहेत, हा कदाचित सर्वांत रंजक प्रश्न नाही.

Ben: So perhaps the interesting question isn't whether Arabic is really one language or secretly many languages.

क्लारा: मलाही तसेच वाटते.

Clara: I think that's right.

शिकणाऱ्यासाठी तिची वेगवेगळी रूपे एकमेकांशी कशी जोडली जातात, हा अधिक उपयुक्त प्रश्न आहे.

For a learner, the more useful question is how its different forms connect.

वर्तमानपत्रात वाचली जाणारी, औपचारिक भाषणात ऐकू येणारी, इजिप्शियन चित्रपटातून अनुभवता येणारी आणि अम्मानमधील संभाषणात वापरली जाणारी भाषा कदाचित सारखी वाटणार नाही.

The language you read in a newspaper, hear in a formal speech, watch in an Egyptian film and use in a conversation in Amman may not sound the same.

पण ही रूपे एकमेकांपासून पूर्णपणे वेगळी असलेली स्वतंत्र विश्वेही नाहीत.

But they're not isolated worlds either.

अरबी शिकणे म्हणजे हळूहळू या भाषिक भूप्रदेशात वावरायला शिकणे.

Learning Arabic means gradually learning how to move through that landscape.

बेन: आणि मग अचानक ही गुंतागुंत समस्या वाटेनाशी होते आणि भाषेला रंजक बनवणाऱ्या गोष्टींपैकी एक वाटू लागते.

Ben: And suddenly the complexity starts looking less like a problem and more like part of what makes the language interesting.

क्लारा: आनंद झाला, बेन.

Clara: My pleasure, Ben.

Ben: And thanks to everyone listening. We'll see you next time on Vocafy Language in Real Life.
