बेन: Vocafy Unpacked मध्ये पुन्हा एकदा स्वागत आहे. मी तुमचा सूत्रसंचालक बेन आणि आज माझ्यासोबत पुन्हा एकदा आहेत Vocafy मधील भाषा-शिक्षण तज्ज्ञ क्लारा.

Ben: Welcome back to Vocafy Unpacked. I'm your host, Ben, here again with Vocafy's language-learning expert, Clara.

क्लारा: नमस्कार बेन. पुन्हा इथे येऊन छान वाटत आहे.

Clara: Hi Ben. Great to be back.

बेन: क्लारा, आज मला अशा एका गोष्टीबद्दल बोलायचे आहे जी प्रत्येक भाषा शिकणाऱ्याला माहीत असते.

Ben: Clara, today I want to talk about something every language learner knows.

तुम्ही अनेक नवे शब्द शिकता. ते ओळखीचे वाटू लागतात. कदाचित तुम्ही स्वतःची चाचणीही घेता आणि योग्य उत्तरे देता.

You learn a bunch of new words. They feel familiar. Maybe you even test yourself and get them right.

मग आठवडाभराने त्यांपैकी एखादा शब्द कुणीतरी वापरतो आणि तुम्हाला वाटते, “हा शब्द मला माहीत आहे... मी तो नक्कीच शिकलो होतो... पण त्याचा अर्थ काय?”

Then a week later, somebody uses one of those words and you think, “I know this... I definitely learned this... what does it mean?”

नेमके काय झाले?

What happened?

क्लारा: अगदी स्वाभाविक गोष्ट झाली—तुम्ही तो विसरलात.

Clara: Something completely normal: you forgot.

बेन: अगदी थेट उत्तर आहे—आणि दिलासा देणारेही.

Ben: That's reassuringly direct.

क्लारा: पण हे समजून घेणे महत्त्वाचे आहे, कारण शिकणाऱ्यांना अनेकदा वाटते की आपण विसरतो म्हणजे भाषा शिकण्यात आपण चांगले नाही.

Clara: But it's important, because learners often treat forgetting as evidence that they're bad at languages.

बहुतेक वेळा तसे नसते. स्मरणशक्ती काळानुसार बदलते. एखाद्या गोष्टीशी आपला एकदाच संपर्क आला आणि त्यानंतर आपण ती पुन्हा कधी वापरली किंवा आठवलीच नाही, तर ती लक्षात ठेवण्याची आपली क्षमता अनेकदा कमकुवत होते.

Usually it isn't. Memory changes over time. If we encounter something once and then never use or retrieve it again, our ability to remember it often becomes weaker.

बेन: हाच तो प्रसिद्ध “विस्मरण वक्र” आहे का?

Ben: Is that the famous “forgetting curve”?

क्लारा: ही संकल्पना तिथूनच आली आहे.

Clara: That's where the idea comes from.

एकोणिसाव्या शतकात मानसशास्त्रज्ञ हर्मन एबिंगहाउस यांनी स्मरणशक्तीवरचे काही सुरुवातीचे पद्धतशीर प्रयोग केले. त्यांनी स्वतःच निरर्थक अक्षरसमूहांच्या याद्या पाठ केल्या आणि वेगवेगळ्या कालावधीनंतर त्या पुन्हा शिकणे किती कठीण होते, हे मोजले.

In the nineteenth century, the psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus carried out some of the earliest systematic experiments on memory. He learned lists of meaningless syllables himself and measured how difficult they were to relearn after different amounts of time.

त्यांच्या निष्कर्षांमध्ये एक नमुना दिसून आला, जो पुढे प्रसिद्ध झाला: शिकल्यावर सुरुवातीला विस्मरण तुलनेने वेगाने होते आणि नंतर काळानुसार त्याचा वेग कमी होतो.

His results showed a pattern that has become famous: forgetting was relatively rapid after learning, then slowed over time.

बेन: म्हणजे आपण सर्वत्र पाहतो तो वक्र—सुरुवातीला तीव्र घसरण आणि त्यानंतर अधिक सपाट होणारी रेषा.

Ben: So that curve we see everywhere — the dramatic drop followed by a flatter line.

क्लारा: अगदी बरोबर. पण इथे एक महत्त्वाची सूचना आहे.

Clara: Exactly. But there's an important warning.

प्रत्येक व्यक्ती एका तासानंतर, एका दिवसानंतर किंवा एका आठवड्यानंतर नेमके किती विसरेल हे सांगणारा, सर्वांना लागू होईल असा एकच विस्मरण वक्र नाही.

There isn't one universal forgetting curve that tells us exactly how much every person will forget after one hour, one day or one week.

Ebbinghaus studied one person — himself — using very artificial material. Real vocabulary learning depends on many things: how well you learned the word in the first place, how meaningful it is to you, how often you encounter it, what you already know, and what you're trying to remember.

बेन: म्हणजे यातून मिळणारा उपयुक्त धडा असा नाही की “बरोबर चोवीस तासांनंतर तुमची स्मरणशक्ती तीस टक्क्यांवर येईल.”

Ben: So the useful lesson isn't “after exactly twenty-four hours, your memory will be at thirty percent.”

क्लारा: नक्कीच नाही.

Clara: Definitely not.

उपयुक्त धडा खूपच सोपा आहे: एखाद्या गोष्टीशी एकदाच संपर्क येणे सहसा पुरेसे नसते आणि त्यानंतरचा संपर्क कधी होतो हे महत्त्वाचे असते.

The useful lesson is much simpler: one encounter is usually not enough, and the timing of later encounters matters.

बेन: आणि इथेच अंतरित पुनरावृत्तीचा विषय येतो.

Ben: Which brings us to spaced repetition.

क्लारा: बरोबर.

Clara: Right.

समजा, तुम्हाला वीस नवे शब्द शिकायचे आहेत. तुम्ही एकाच संध्याकाळी प्रत्येक शब्दाची दहा वेळा पुनरावृत्ती करू शकता.

Imagine you want to learn twenty new words. You could repeat each one ten times in a single evening.

त्यामुळे ते शब्द तुम्हाला खूप ओळखीचे वाटू शकतात.

That might make them feel very familiar.

बेन: आणि नेमक्या याच वेळी मी आत्मविश्वासाने स्वतःला सांगतो की ते शब्द मला पाठ झाले आहेत.

Ben: Which is exactly when I confidently tell myself I've learned them.

क्लारा: आणि हाच सापळा आहे. एखादी गोष्ट आत्ता ओळखीची वाटणे म्हणजे ती काही दिवसांनी किंवा आठवड्यांनी स्मरणातून आठवता येईलच असे नाही.

Clara: And that's the trap. Familiarity right now isn't necessarily the same as being able to retrieve something days or weeks later.

सर्व पुनरावृत्ती एकाच वेळी करण्याऐवजी तुम्ही त्या वेगवेगळ्या कालावधीत विभागू शकता.

Instead of doing all those repetitions at once, you can spread them across time.

आज शब्दाशी पहिल्यांदा परिचय करा. काही काळाने त्याची पुन्हा उजळणी करा. त्यानंतर आणखी मोठ्या अंतराने पुन्हा करा. तो सहज आठवत राहिला, तर प्रत्येक उजळणीमधील अंतर वाढवता येते.

You meet the word today. Return to it later. Then again after a longer interval. If it continues to be easy to remember, the gaps between reviews can become longer.

अंतरित पुनरावृत्तीमागची हीच मूलभूत कल्पना आहे.

That's the basic idea behind spaced repetition.

बेन: आणि ही केवळ अॅपमध्ये वापरली जाणारी एखादी युक्ती नाही, बरोबर?

Ben: And this isn't just an app trick?

क्लारा: नाही. अंतर ठेवून केलेल्या सरावाचा परिणाम हा स्मरणशक्तीवरील संशोधनातील सर्वाधिक प्रस्थापित निष्कर्षांपैकी एक आहे.

Clara: No. The spacing effect is one of the most established findings in memory research.

अनेक प्रकारच्या शिक्षणात असे दिसून येते की एकाच सत्रात त्याच सामग्रीचा वारंवार अभ्यास करण्यापेक्षा वेगवेगळ्या सत्रांमध्ये अंतर ठेवून शिकलेली माहिती दीर्घकाळ अधिक चांगली लक्षात राहते.

Across many kinds of learning, information studied across separate sessions tends to be retained better over the long term than the same material studied repeatedly in one concentrated session.

दुसरी भाषा शिकण्याबाबतच्या संशोधनातही साधारण हाच नमुना आढळला आहे.

Research specifically on second-language learning has found the same general pattern.

बेन: पण त्यासाठी अल्गोरिदमची गरज का आहे? मी दर काही दिवसांनी सर्व शब्दांची उजळणी करू शकत नाही का?

Ben: But why do we need an algorithm for that? Couldn't I just review everything every few days?

क्लारा: नक्कीच करू शकता. आणि केवळ दहा शब्द असतील, तर ती पद्धत उत्तम कामही करेल.

Clara: You could. And with ten words, that might work perfectly well.

पण शब्दांची संख्या आधी पन्नास, मग पाचशे आणि नंतर काही हजारांवर गेली की समस्या सुरू होते.

The problem appears when you have fifty words, then five hundred, then several thousand.

काही शब्द कठीण असतात. काही सोपे असतात. काही तुम्ही नुकतेच शिकलेले असतात, तर काही शब्दांनी अनेक महिन्यांपासून तुम्हाला अडचणीत टाकलेले नसते.

Some are difficult. Some are easy. Some you've just learned. Others haven't troubled you for months.

त्या सर्वांची सारखीच उजळणी करण्यात बराच वेळ वाया जाईल.

Reviewing all of them equally would waste a lot of time.

बेन: आणि इथेच SRS—म्हणजे Spaced Repetition System किंवा अंतरित पुनरावृत्ती प्रणाली—उपयोगी ठरते.

Ben: So that's where an SRS — a Spaced Repetition System — comes in.

क्लारा: अगदी बरोबर.

Clara: Exactly.

कोणत्या गोष्टीचा पुन्हा सराव करायचा आणि साधारण केव्हा करायचा, हे ठरवण्यात SRS मदत करते.

An SRS helps decide what should come back into practice and roughly when.

ज्या गोष्टी लक्षात ठेवताना अडचण येते त्या लवकर पुन्हा समोर येऊ शकतात. ज्या गोष्टी सातत्याने सहज आठवतात त्यांची उजळणी साधारणपणे अधिक काळ थांबू शकते.

Items you're struggling with can return sooner. Items you keep remembering successfully can usually wait longer.

तुम्ही एखादी गोष्ट नेमक्या कोणत्या सेकंदाला विसरणार आहात, याचा अंदाज लावणे हा यामागचा उद्देश नाही. मानवी स्मरणशक्ती इतकी अचूकपणे वर्तवता येत नाही.

The point isn't to predict the exact second you're going to forget something. Human memory isn't that predictable.

यामागचे उद्दिष्ट अधिक व्यावहारिक आहे: तुमच्याकडे असलेला मर्यादित सरावाचा वेळ अशा गोष्टींसाठी वापरा, जिथे पुन्हा सक्रियपणे आठवण्याचा प्रयत्न उपयुक्त ठरण्याची शक्यता आहे.

The goal is much more practical: use your limited practice time where another retrieval is likely to be useful.

बेन: तुम्ही आत्ताच “सक्रिय स्मरण” असा शब्द वापरलात. ते पुनरावृत्तीपेक्षा वेगळे आहे का?

Ben: You just used the word “retrieval.” Is that different from repetition?

क्लारा: खूपच वेगळे आहे—आणि हा सर्वांत महत्त्वाच्या भागांपैकी एक आहे.

Clara: Very different — and this is one of the most important parts.

समजा, मी तुम्हाला एक कार्ड दाखवले आणि त्यावर लिहिले आहे:

Suppose I show you a card that says:

“ephemeral — अगदी थोडा काळ टिकणारे.”

“ephemeral — lasting for a very short time.”

तुम्ही ते पाच वेळा वाचता.

You read it five times.

ही पुनरावृत्ती झाली.

That's repetition.

पण मी तुम्हाला “ephemeral” हा शब्द दाखवला आणि उत्तर उघड करण्यापूर्वी त्याचा अर्थ आठवायला सांगितला, तर तुम्ही सक्रिय स्मरणाचा सराव करत आहात.

But if I show you “ephemeral” and ask you to remember the meaning before revealing the answer, you're doing retrieval practice.

तुम्ही ती माहिती स्मरणातून पुन्हा जागी करण्याचा प्रयत्न करत आहात.

You're trying to bring the information back from memory.

बेन: म्हणजे काही सेकंद आठवण्याचा प्रयत्न करताना अडखळणे ही नेहमीच वाईट गोष्ट नसते.

Ben: So struggling for a few seconds isn't necessarily a bad thing.

क्लारा: अगदी बरोबर.

Clara: Exactly.

एखादी गोष्ट यशस्वीपणे आठवणे ही स्वतःमध्ये शिकण्याची प्रक्रिया असते. विपुल संशोधनातून असे दिसते की केवळ तीच माहिती पुन्हा पाहण्यापेक्षा ती स्मरणातून आठवण्याचा सराव केल्यास पुढे ती अधिक चांगली लक्षात राहू शकते.

Successful retrieval is itself a learning event. A large body of research shows that practising retrieval can improve later memory more than simply seeing the information again.

त्यामुळे उपयुक्त उजळणी प्रणाली केवळ “तुम्ही अलीकडे हा शब्द पाहिला आहे का?” असा प्रश्न विचारत नाही.

So a useful review system isn't just asking, “Have you looked at this word recently?”

तुम्हाला माहीत असलेली गोष्ट प्रत्यक्षात आठवण्याच्या संधी ती देते.

It's giving you opportunities to actually retrieve what you know.

बेन: आणि एखादा शब्द एका प्रकारे आठवता आला म्हणजे तो मला पूर्णपणे येतो, असेही सिद्ध होत नसावे.

Ben: And presumably one kind of retrieval doesn't prove that I completely know a word.

क्लारा: भाषा शिकताना ही गोष्ट विशेषतः महत्त्वाची ठरते.

Clara: That's especially important in language learning.

एखादा शब्द “माहीत असणे” म्हणजे नेमके काय, याचा विचार करा.

Think about what it means to “know” a word.

वाचताना तुम्ही तो शब्द ओळखू शकता; पण स्वतःहून वापरू शकत नाही.

You might recognise it while reading but be unable to produce it yourself.

लिखित स्वरूप पाहिल्यावर त्याचा अर्थ आठवू शकतो; पण बोलण्यात तो ऐकल्यावर ओळखता येत नाही.

You might remember its meaning when you see the written form but fail to recognise it in speech.

किंवा त्याचा अर्थ पूर्णपणे समजत असूनही वाक्यात तो सहज आणि नैसर्गिकपणे कसा वापरायचा, हे माहीत नसू शकते.

Or you might understand it perfectly and still not know how to use it naturally in a sentence.

बेन: म्हणजे शब्दसंग्रहाचे ज्ञान हे “माहित आहे किंवा माहीत नाही” असे साधे चालू-बंद बटण नाही.

Ben: So vocabulary knowledge isn't really a simple known-or-not-known switch.

क्लारा: अगदी बरोबर.

Clara: Exactly.

म्हणूनच विविध प्रकारचा सराव उपयुक्त ठरू शकतो.

That's why varied practice can be useful.

तुम्ही शब्दाचा अर्थ आठवू शकता, पर्यायांमधून योग्य उत्तर निवडू शकता, वाक्य पूर्ण करू शकता, शब्द स्वतः लिहू शकता, ऐकताना तो ओळखू शकता किंवा अर्थपूर्ण मजकुरात त्याच्याशी पुन्हा परिचित होऊ शकता.

You can recall a meaning, choose between alternatives, complete a sentence, write the word yourself, listen for it, or meet it again inside meaningful content.

या प्रत्येक कृतीत तुमच्या स्मरणशक्तीचा थोडा वेगळ्या प्रकारे वापर होतो.

These activities ask slightly different things of your memory.

बेन: एकाच वेगळ्या शब्दजोड्या पुन्हा पुन्हा दाखवणाऱ्या पारंपरिक फ्लॅशकार्ड पद्धतीपेक्षा हे बरेच वेगळे वाटते.

Ben: Which sounds quite different from the classic flashcard experience of seeing the same isolated pair again and again.

क्लारा: हो, ते वेगळे असू शकते.

Clara: It can be.

फ्लॅशकार्ड्समध्ये स्वतःमध्ये काहीच समस्या नाही. ते एक उपयुक्त साधन आहे.

Flashcards themselves aren't the problem. They're a useful tool.

पण एखादा शब्द कसा उच्चारला जातो, तो तुम्हाला कुठे दिसला, कोणत्या प्रकारच्या वाक्यात येतो आणि अर्थपूर्ण गोष्टीशी त्याचा कसा संबंध आहे हेही माहीत असेल, तर त्या शब्दाबद्दलचे तुमचे ज्ञान अधिक समृद्ध होते.

But a word becomes much richer when you also know how it sounds, where you've seen it, what kind of sentence it appears in, and how it connects to something meaningful.

समजा, नेत्रदीपक उल्कावर्षावावरील एका लेखातून तुम्ही “ephemeral” हा शब्द जतन केला.

Imagine you saved the word “ephemeral” from an article about a spectacular meteor shower.

नंतर केवळ हे पाहण्याऐवजी:

Later, instead of seeing only:

“ephemeral = अल्पकाळ टिकणारे”

“ephemeral = short-lived”

तुम्ही तो शब्द पहिल्यांदा ज्या वाक्यात आणि कल्पनेत पाहिला होता, त्यांच्याशीही पुन्हा जोडू शकता.

you can also reconnect it with the sentence and idea where you first encountered it.

बेन: म्हणजे संदर्भामुळे शब्दाला जणू राहण्यासाठी एक जागा मिळते.

Ben: So context gives the word somewhere to live.

क्लारा: हे सांगण्याची खूप छान पद्धत आहे.

Clara: That's a nice way to put it.

याचा अर्थ असा नाही की अधिक माहिती जोडल्याने प्रत्येक आठवण आपोआप अधिक मजबूत होते. पण शब्दसंग्रह शिकणे म्हणजे केवळ भाषांतर साठवून ठेवणे नव्हे. तुम्ही हळूहळू त्या शब्दाचे रूप, उच्चार, अर्थ आणि वापर यांविषयीचे ज्ञान विकसित करत असता.

It doesn't mean that adding more information automatically makes every memory stronger. But learning vocabulary involves more than storing a translation. You're gradually building knowledge about the word's form, sound, meaning and use.

वेगवेगळ्या उपयुक्त पद्धतींनी तो शब्द पुन्हा पाहणे आणि आठवणे यामुळे हे संबंध अधिक मजबूत होऊ शकतात.

Meeting and retrieving it in different useful ways can strengthen those connections.

बेन: हे Vocafy मध्ये कसे बसते?

Ben: How does that fit into Vocafy?

क्लारा: तुम्ही जतन केलेला शब्दसंग्रह Vocafy तुमच्या शिकण्याच्या संदर्भाशी आणि इतिहासाशी जोडून ठेवते.

Clara: Vocafy keeps the vocabulary you save connected with your learning context and history.

त्यामुळे वाचताना, काहीतरी पाहताना किंवा इतर सामग्रीचा अभ्यास करताना सापडलेला शब्द किंवा वाक्प्रचार ती कृती संपल्यानंतर नाहीसा होण्याची गरज नाही.

So a word or phrase you discover while reading, watching something or working with other content doesn't have to disappear when that activity ends.

जतन केलेल्या शब्दसंग्रहाकडे तुम्ही उजळणीच्या माध्यमातून पुन्हा वळू शकता आणि वेगवेगळ्या प्रकारे त्याचा सराव करू शकता.

You can return to saved vocabulary through review and practise it in different ways.

बेन: म्हणजे अंतरित उजळणी ही स्वतंत्र कार्डसंच न राहता मोठ्या प्रणालीचा भाग बनते.

Ben: So spaced review becomes part of a bigger system rather than a separate deck of cards.

क्लारा: अगदी बरोबर.

Clara: Exactly.

ही प्रणाली काळानुसार शब्दसंग्रह पुन्हा समोर आणण्यास मदत करते, तर विविध कृतींमधून तुम्ही सक्रिय स्मरण, ऐकणे, लिहिणे, वाक्य पूर्ण करणे आणि इतर पद्धतींनी त्या शब्दसंग्रहाचा सराव करू शकता.

The system can help bring vocabulary back over time, while different activities let you work with that vocabulary through recall, listening, writing, sentence completion and other forms of practice.

आणि जतन केलेल्या शब्दांसोबत त्यांचा संदर्भही कायम राहू शकत असल्याने उजळणी म्हणजे एकमेकांशी संबंध नसलेल्या शब्दजोड्या वारंवार पाठ करणेच असे नाही.

And because saved words can keep their context, review doesn't have to mean repeatedly memorising disconnected word pairs.

बेन: एखादी गोष्ट मला सहज आठवली तर काय होते?

Ben: What happens when I remember something easily?

क्लारा: अंतरित प्रणालीमध्ये ती गोष्ट साधारणपणे कमी वेळा समोर येणे योग्य ठरते.

Clara: In a spaced system, it generally makes sense for that item to appear less frequently.

एखादा दुसरा शब्द वारंवार विसरला जात असताना आधीच सहज आठवणाऱ्या गोष्टीची उद्या पुन्हा उजळणी करण्यात वेळ का घालवायचा?

Why spend tomorrow reviewing something that is already easy when another word keeps disappearing from memory?

तुमची आठवण अधिक विश्वासार्ह होत गेली की उजळणीमधील अंतर वाढू शकते.

As your memory becomes more reliable, the interval can grow.

बेन: आणि मी विसरलो तर?

Ben: And if I forget?

क्लारा: मग तुम्हाला स्वतःच्या शिकण्याबद्दल काहीतरी उपयुक्त समजले आहे.

Clara: Then you've learned something useful about your learning.

त्या शब्दाकडे कदाचित अधिक लक्ष देण्याची गरज आहे, त्यामुळे तो लवकर पुन्हा समोर येऊ शकतो.

The word probably needs more attention, so it can return sooner.

सराव करताना विसरणे ही काही आपत्ती नाही. उलट, फारसे नुकसान होणार नसताना आपल्या कमकुवत बाजू शोधणे हेही सराव करण्यामागचे एक कारण आहे.

Forgetting during practice isn't a disaster. In fact, one reason we practise is to discover weaknesses while the stakes are low.

बेन: लाल रंगात दिसणाऱ्या “चूक” या उत्तराकडे पाहण्याची ही खूपच चांगली पद्धत आहे.

Ben: That's a much nicer way of looking at the red “wrong” answer.

क्लारा: नक्कीच.

Clara: It is.

उजळणी म्हणजे परीक्षा नाही. ती शिकण्याच्या प्रक्रियेचाच एक भाग आहे.

A review isn't an exam. It's part of the learning process.

बेन: पण अजूनही एक समस्या आहे.

Ben: There's still one problem, though.

मी यापूर्वी अंतरित पुनरावृत्तीची अॅप्स वापरली आहेत. काही दिवस ती अप्रतिम वाटतात आणि मग अचानक उजळणीचा मोठा डोंगर समोर उभा राहतो.

I've used spaced-repetition apps before. They're wonderful for a few days, and then suddenly I have a mountain of reviews waiting for me.

त्या वेळी शास्त्रीयदृष्ट्या सर्वांत योग्य उपाय म्हणजे अॅप बंद करणे आणि आपण ते कधी इन्स्टॉलच केले नव्हते असे भासवणे, असे वाटते.

At that point, the scientifically optimal thing seems to be closing the app and pretending I never installed it.

क्लारा: आणि इथेच शिक्षणविज्ञानाची वास्तव जीवनाशी गाठ पडते.

Clara: And that's where learning science meets real life.

तुम्ही एखादे वेळापत्रक वापरणेच थांबवले, तर सैद्धांतिकदृष्ट्या ते कितीही कार्यक्षम असले तरी त्याचा फारसा उपयोग होत नाही.

A theoretically efficient schedule isn't very useful if you stop using it.

तुम्ही किती नवीन गोष्टी जोडता हे महत्त्वाचे आहे. प्रत्यक्षात किती उजळणी नियमितपणे करणे शक्य आहे, हेही महत्त्वाचे आहे. आणि एखादा दिवस चुकला म्हणजे संपूर्ण प्रणाली बिघडली असे नाही.

The number of new items you add matters. The amount of review you can realistically sustain matters. And missing a day doesn't mean you've ruined the system.

बेन: म्हणजे “दररोज सकाळी अगदी दहा मिनिटे—आयुष्यभर” असा प्रसिद्ध नियम पाळण्याची गरज नाही?

Ben: So we don't need the famous “exactly ten minutes every morning forever” rule?

क्लारा: असा कोणताही जादुई आकडा नाही.

Clara: No magic number.

व्यापक तत्त्व असे आहे की दीर्घकाळ माहिती लक्षात ठेवण्यासाठी सगळा अभ्यास एकाच सत्रात करण्यापेक्षा वेळोवेळी विभागून केलेला सराव सहसा अधिक उपयुक्त ठरतो.

The broader principle is that distributed practice is usually better for long-term retention than cramming everything into one session.

एकदा प्रचंड मोठे अभ्याससत्र करून नंतर आठवडाभर काहीच न करण्यापेक्षा तुम्हाला नियमितपणे करता येईल असे छोटे सत्र अनेकदा अधिक उपयुक्त असते.

A short session that you can realistically return to is often more useful than an enormous study session followed by a week of nothing.

पण तुम्हाला प्रत्यक्षात सातत्याने पाळता येईल अशी दिनचर्याच सर्वोत्तम ठरते.

But the best routine is one you can actually maintain.

बेन: आणि भाषा शिकण्यातला संपूर्ण वेळ केवळ उजळणी करण्यात घालवू नये, हेही खरे असेल.

Ben: And presumably we shouldn't spend our entire language-learning life doing reviews either.

क्लारा: नक्कीच नाही.

Clara: Definitely not.

शब्दसंग्रह लक्षात ठेवणे महत्त्वाचे आहे; पण भाषा शिकणे म्हणजे केवळ शब्दसंग्रह पाठ करणे नव्हे.

Remembering vocabulary is important, but language learning is bigger than memorising vocabulary.

वाचा. ऐका. संवाद साधा. लिहा. नव्या भाषेच्या संपर्कात या.

Read. Listen. Have conversations. Write things. Encounter new language.

या इतर गोष्टी करत असताना महत्त्वाचे शब्द आठवणीत आणि वापरासाठी उपलब्ध ठेवण्यास अंतरित पुनरावृत्ती मदत करते, म्हणून ती उपयुक्त आहे.

Spaced repetition is useful because it helps important words stay available while you do those other things.

तिने भाषेच्या वापराला मदत केली पाहिजे, त्याची जागा घेऊ नये.

It should support language use, not replace it.

बेन: म्हणजे सगळा गाजावाजा बाजूला ठेवला, तर यामागची खरी कल्पना काय आहे?

Ben: So if we strip away all the hype, what's the real idea?

क्लारा: एखादी गोष्ट एकदाच पाहिल्याने किंवा ऐकल्याने ती कायमची लक्षात राहील, अशी अपेक्षा ठेवू नका.

Clara: Don't expect one exposure to create a permanent memory.

महत्त्वाच्या गोष्टींकडे वेळोवेळी परत या. त्या केवळ पुन्हा वाचण्याऐवजी स्मरणातून आठवण्याचा प्रयत्न करा. कठीण गोष्टींकडे अधिक लक्ष द्या आणि सोप्या गोष्टींच्या उजळणीतील अंतर हळूहळू वाढवा.

Return to important things over time. Try to retrieve them instead of simply rereading them. Give difficult items more attention and easy ones increasingly more space.

आणि शक्य असेल तेव्हा शब्दसंग्रह ज्या भाषिक संदर्भात खरोखर अर्थपूर्ण ठरतो, त्याच्याशी जोडून ठेवा.

And whenever possible, keep vocabulary connected to the language where it actually means something.

बेन: म्हणजे आपण विस्मरणावर खरोखर मात करत नाही.

Ben: So we're not really defeating forgetting.

क्लारा: नाही. विसरणे हा स्मरणशक्तीचाच एक भाग आहे.

Clara: No. Forgetting is part of memory.

आपण त्याचा विचार करून सरावाची रचना करत आहोत.

We're designing practice around it.

बेन: “तुमचा मेंदू हॅक करा आणि पुन्हा कधीही काही विसरू नका” यापेक्षा ही कल्पना मला प्रत्यक्षात अधिक रंजक वाटते.

Ben: I think that's actually more interesting than “hack your brain and never forget anything.”

क्लारा: आणि खूपच वास्तववादीही.

Clara: Much more realistic too.

बेन: क्लारा, आपण का विसरतो हे लक्षात ठेवायला आम्हाला मदत केल्याबद्दल धन्यवाद.

Ben: Clara, thanks for helping us remember why we forget.

क्लारा: आनंदच झाला.

Clara: My pleasure.

बेन: आणि ऐकणाऱ्या सर्वांसाठी: अलीकडे शिकलेला एखादा शब्द तुम्हाला आत्ता अजूनही आठवत असेल, तर कदाचित आज उत्तर पाहण्याआधी तो पुन्हा आठवण्याचा प्रयत्न करण्याची योग्य वेळ आहे.
