बेन: Vocafy Unpacked मध्ये पुन्हा स्वागत आहे. मी बेन, आणि माझ्यासोबत क्लारा आहे. आज आपण बाळांविषयी बोलणार आहोत. पाठ्यपुस्तकं, शब्दसंग्रहासाठीची ॲप्स किंवा व्याकरणाच्या धड्यांशिवाय ती बोलायला शिकतात. मग प्रश्न पडतोच: आपणही तसंच करू शकतो का?

Ben: Welcome back to Vocafy Unpacked. I'm Ben, and I'm joined by Clara. Today we're talking about babies. They learn to speak without textbooks, vocabulary apps or grammar lessons. It's hard not to wonder: could we do the same?

Clara: There's plenty to learn from watching them. But babies are developing their first language while discovering the world around them. Adults already have language, knowledge and learning strategies. We don't need to start over as babies to learn another language.

बेन: तरीही, बाहेरून पाहताना हे सगळं अगदी सहज घडतंय असं वाटतं.

Ben: Still, from the outside, it looks almost effortless.

क्लारा: बाळ पहिला शब्द बोललं की आपण आनंद साजरा करतो. पण त्याआधी घडलेल्या सगळ्या गोष्टी नेहमी आपल्या लक्षात येत नाहीत: महिनोनमहिने ऐकणं, आवाज काढणं, लोकांना पाहणं आणि रोजच्या संवादात सहभागी होणं. आणि पहिली वाक्यं बोलल्यानंतरही भाषाविकास अनेक वर्षं सुरूच राहतो.

Clara: We see the first word and celebrate it. What we don't always notice is everything leading up to it: months of listening, making sounds, watching people and joining in everyday exchanges. And language development continues for years after those first sentences.

बेन: मग प्रत्यक्षात शिकायला सुरुवात कधी होते?

Ben: So when does the learning actually begin?

क्लारा: पहिला शब्द बोलण्याच्या खूप आधी. बाळांना लोकांचे आवाज आणि बोलण्याच्या पद्धती परिचित होऊ लागतात. संशोधनातून असं दिसतं की पहिल्या वर्षातच बाळांना परिचित शब्दांचा काही अर्थ समजू लागतो—ते शब्द स्वतः बोलता येण्याआधीच.

Clara: Well before the first word. Babies become familiar with voices and speech patterns, and research shows that some understanding of familiar words is already present during the first year, before they can say those words themselves.

बेन: याला “मौनाचा काळ” म्हणतात, असं मी ऐकलं आहे. ही संज्ञा उपयोगी आहे का?

Ben: I've heard that called a “silent period.” Is that a useful description?

क्लारा: हे वर्णन दिशाभूल करू शकतं. अजून शब्द न बोलणारं बाळ “कू-कू”सारखे आवाज काढत असेल, बडबडत असेल, कोणाकडे पाहत असेल किंवा हावभावाने प्रतिसाद देत असेल. म्हणजे आधीपासूनच भरपूर संवाद सुरू असतो.

Clara: It can be misleading. A baby who isn't saying words yet may still be cooing, babbling, looking towards someone or responding with a gesture. There's already a lot of communication happening.

बेन: म्हणजे शब्द बोलता येण्याआधीपासूनच बाळं संभाषणात सहभागी असतात.

Ben: They're part of the conversation before they have the words.

क्लारा: अगदी. एखादं बाळ आवाज काढतं आणि पालकांकडून त्याला प्रतिसाद मिळतो, अशी कल्पना करा. मग बाळ आणखी एक आवाज काढतं. अशा छोट्या संवादांतून दुसऱ्या व्यक्तीला प्रतिसाद देण्याचा अनुभव त्याला मिळतो.

Clara: Exactly. Imagine a baby making a sound and a parent answering. Then the baby makes another sound. Those little exchanges give them experience of responding to another person.

बेन: म्हणजे बोलण्याचा प्रयत्न करण्यापूर्वी प्रौढांनी बराच काळ फक्त ऐकत राहावं का?

Ben: Does that mean adults should spend a long time listening before trying to speak?

Clara: Listening deserves plenty of attention, but there's no need to impose a long waiting period on yourself. You can listen and try simple responses alongside it. A greeting, a short answer, a question you actually need. You don't have to wait until you can say everything.

बेन: आता बाळांच्या बडबडीबद्दल बोलू या. त्या सगळ्या “बा-बा-बा” आणि “दा-दा-दा” आवाजांमागे नेमकं काय चाललेलं असतं?

Ben: Let's talk about babbling. What's happening with all those “ba-ba-ba” and “da-da-da” sounds?

क्लारा: बाळं आपल्या आवाजाने आणि तोंडाने काय काय करता येतं, हे शोधत असतात. कालांतराने त्यांचे आवाज अधिकाधिक बोलण्यासारखे वाटू लागतात. इतरांकडून मिळणाऱ्या प्रतिसादामुळे आवाजांशी चाललेल्या या खेळाला दिशा मिळू शकते.

Clara: Babies are exploring what they can do with their voices and mouths. Over time, their sounds become more speech-like. And the responses they get from other people can help shape that vocal play.

बेन: सगळीकडे बाळांची बडबड सारखीच ऐकू येते का?

Ben: Does babbling sound the same everywhere?

क्लारा: वेगवेगळ्या भाषांमध्ये काही साम्यं असतात, विशेषतः “बा-बा”सारख्या पुन्हा पुन्हा येणाऱ्या उच्चारांमध्ये. पण बडबड पूर्णपणे एकसारखी नसते. स्पष्ट शब्द ऐकू येण्याआधीही बाळाच्या आसपास बोलल्या जाणाऱ्या भाषेशी जोडलेले सूक्ष्म फरक संशोधकांना आढळले आहेत.

Clara: There are similarities across languages, especially in the kinds of repeated syllables you hear. But it isn't identical. Researchers have found subtle differences related to the language around the baby, even before clear words appear.

बेन: म्हणजे ओळखीचे ध्वनी आधीपासूनच आपली छाप पाडत असतात.

Ben: So the familiar sounds are already leaving a mark.

क्लारा: हो, हळूहळू. ही एखाद्या ठरावीक दिवशी अचानक सुरू होणारी गोष्ट नाही. ऐकणं, आवाज काढण्याच्या क्षमतेचा विकास आणि परस्परसंवाद या सगळ्या प्रक्रिया एकमेकींत गुंतलेल्या असतात.

Clara: Yes, gradually. It isn't a switch that flips on a particular day. Listening, vocal development and interaction overlap.

बेन: मग येतात पहिले शब्द. त्या सुरुवातीच्या शब्दसंग्रहात सहसा काय समाविष्ट होतं?

Ben: Then come the first words. What tends to make it into that early vocabulary?

Clara: Often familiar people, objects, actions and routines. Things like a parent’s name, “more,” or “bye-bye.” The exact words differ across children and languages, but they're often connected to something happening in the child's life.

बेन: उदाहरणार्थ, कोणी तुमच्या पायात बूट घालत असताना “बूट” हा शब्द ऐकू येतो तसं.

Ben: Like hearing “shoes” when someone's putting your shoes on.

क्लारा: बरोबर. त्या प्रसंगातून अर्थ समजण्याचे संकेत मिळतात. आणि तोच शब्द वेगवेगळ्या दिवशी, वेगवेगळे बूट असताना, कदाचित वेगवेगळ्या लोकांकडून पुन्हा ऐकू येतो.

Clara: Right. The situation gives clues to the meaning. And that word comes back on different days, with different shoes, perhaps spoken by different people.

बेन: हे प्रौढांसाठीही उपयोगी वाटतं.

Ben: That sounds useful for adults too.

क्लारा: हे तत्त्व नक्कीच वापरता येईल. एखादा वाक्प्रयोग शिकताना तो एखाद्या प्रसंगाशी जोडा. “मला थोडी मदत कराल का?” हे वाक्य जतन करत असाल, तर त्याचा अर्थ स्पष्ट करणारे उदाहरणही सोबत ठेवा. मग प्रत्यक्षात अशी विनंती करण्याची वेळ आली, तर ते वापरून पाहा.

Clara: It is a useful principle to borrow. When you learn an expression, connect it to a situation. If you save “Could you give me a hand?”, keep an example that makes its meaning clear. Then try using it for something you might actually ask.

बेन: म्हणजे शब्दसंग्रहाची यादी ही सुरुवातीसाठी वाईट पद्धत आहे का?

Ben: So is a vocabulary list a bad starting point?

क्लारा: अजिबात नाही. यादीमुळे उपयोगी शब्द आणि वाक्यं व्यवस्थित मांडता येतात आणि त्यांची उजळणी करता येते. त्यात नेहमी वापरले जाणारे वाक्प्रयोग, उदाहरण-वाक्यं आणि ऑडिओ समाविष्ट करू शकता. नंतर ते वाक्प्रयोग इतर सामग्रीत शोधा आणि स्वतः वापरण्याचा सराव करा.

Clara: Not at all. A list can help you organise and review useful language. You can include common phrases, example sentences and audio. Then look for those expressions in other material and practise using them yourself.

बेन: “शब्दसंग्रहाचा स्फोट” म्हणून ओळखल्या जाणाऱ्या टप्प्याचं काय? प्रत्येक गोष्टीला नाव असतं, हे प्रत्येक लहान मुलाच्या अचानक लक्षात येतं का?

Ben: What about the famous vocabulary explosion? Does every toddler suddenly realise that everything has a name?

क्लारा: काही मुलांच्या शब्द शिकण्याच्या वेगात खरोखरच लक्षणीय वाढ दिसते. इतर मुलांची वाढ मात्र अधिक हळूहळू होते. हे सगळं अचानक झालेल्या एकाच जाणिवेमुळे घडतं, ही कल्पना खूपच सोपी करून मांडलेली आहे. प्रत्येक मुलाला लागू पडेल असं एकच वेळापत्रक नसतं.

Clara: Some children do show a noticeable acceleration in word learning. For others, growth is more gradual. The idea of one sudden discovery explaining it all is too neat. There isn't a single timetable that describes every child.

बेन: आणि शेवटी ती शब्द एकत्र जोडू लागतात.

Ben: And eventually they start putting words together.

क्लारा: हो. सुरुवातीचे शब्दसमूह “आणखी दूध” किंवा “बाबा गेले” यांसारखे छोटे असू शकतात. पण ते छोटे आहेत म्हणजे त्यांच्यात व्याकरण नाही असं नव्हे. शब्दांतून संबंध व्यक्त होऊ लागतात: एखादी गोष्ट आणखी हवी आहे किंवा कोणी निघून गेलं आहे.

Clara: Yes. Early combinations can be short, like “more milk” or “Daddy gone.” But short doesn't mean there's no grammar. The words are beginning to express relationships: wanting more of something, or saying that someone has left.

बेन: माझं आवडतं उदाहरण अजूनही “I goed” हेच आहे. ते चुकीचं आहे, पण ते बरोबर का वाटलं असेल हे समजतं.

Ben: My favourite example is still “I goed.” It's wrong, but you can see how it makes sense.

क्लारा: अगदी. मूल “walked” किंवा “played”सारखी परिचित रचना वेगळ्या प्रकारे बदलणाऱ्या शब्दाला लागू करतं. याला ‘अतिनियमितीकरण’ (overregularisation) म्हणतात. याआधी त्या मुलाने “went” बरोबर म्हटलंही असेल.

Clara: Exactly. The child is extending a familiar pattern—like “walked” or “played”—to a word that works differently. That's called overregularisation. They may even have said “went” correctly before.

बेन: म्हणजे चूक झाली, याचा अर्थ त्यांची प्रगती मागे गेली असाच होत नाही.

Ben: So a mistake doesn't necessarily mean they've gone backwards.

Clara: Right. It can reveal something about the patterns they're developing. For an adult learner, the practical message is to be willing to try, then pay attention to feedback. You can accept a mistake without deciding to keep it.

बेन: आणि बाळं व्याकरणाची स्पष्टीकरणं वापरत नाहीत म्हणून आपल्याला ती सोडून देण्याची गरज नाही, बरोबर?

Ben: And we don't have to give up grammar explanations just because babies don't use them?

Clara: Definitely not. Adults can ask questions, compare examples, read explanations and deliberately practise something difficult. Those are useful resources. If a short explanation helps you understand a pattern, use it.

बेन: मग आठवडाभराच्या नेहमीच्या अभ्यासात बाळांकडून नेमकं काय घेता येईल?

Ben: So what would you actually borrow from babies for an ordinary week of learning?

क्लारा: भाषेसाठी नियमितपणे वेळ काढा. ज्या गोष्टी तुम्हाला समजतात आणि महत्त्वाच्या वाटतात, त्यांच्याशी भाषा जोडा. उपयोगी शब्द वेगवेगळ्या प्रसंगांत पुन्हा पाहा. आणि सहभागी व्हा—प्रतिसाद द्या, प्रश्न विचारा, काहीतरी करून पाहा आणि त्यातून शिका.

Clara: Make room for language regularly. Connect it to things you understand and care about. Return to useful words in different situations. And take part—respond, ask, try something, and learn from what happens.

बेन: Vocafy मध्ये हे प्रत्यक्षात कसं करता येईल?

Ben: What might that look like in Vocafy?

Clara: You could create a Voca set for an everyday situation, with useful phrases and example sentences. Listen to it, pause to recall an expression, and use some of that language in practice with the tutor. Later, you might meet it again in a story or video.

बेन: भाषेला आपल्या दिनक्रमाचा भाग बनवण्याचा सहज जमणारा मार्ग.

Ben: A manageable way to bring language into your day.

क्लारा: हो. भाषा पुन्हा पुन्हा समजून घेण्याच्या आणि वापरण्याच्या संधी मिळतात, हेच महत्त्वाचं आहे. प्रौढ म्हणून तुमच्याकडे असलेल्या ज्ञानाचा पूर्ण उपयोग करतानाच मुलांकडून प्रेरणाही घेता येते.

Clara: Yes. The value is in those repeated opportunities to understand and use it. You can take inspiration from children while making full use of what you know as an adult.

बेन: क्लारा, धन्यवाद. आणि ऐकणाऱ्या सर्वांचेही आभार. Vocafy Unpacked च्या पुढच्या भागात पुन्हा भेटू.

Ben: Clara, thank you. And thanks to everyone listening. See you next time on Vocafy Unpacked.
