Sultan was a faithful dog who had grown old and lost his teeth. One day, he heard his master say, "I will shoot Sultan tomorrow. He is useless now." The master’s wife begged him to let the dog live, but the man refused.
Sultan was terrified and went to the woods to talk to his friend, the wolf. The wolf said, "I have a plan. Tomorrow, your masters will take their child to the field. I will run out and pretend to steal the baby. You must chase me. I will drop the child, and you can 'save' him. They will be so thankful that they will keep you forever."
The plan worked perfectly. The master was so happy that he promised to take care of Sultan for life. Soon after, the wolf visited Sultan. "Now, friend," the wolf said, "let me steal one of your master’s sheep as a reward for my help." Sultan refused, saying, "I must be loyal to my master."
The wolf didn't believe him and tried to steal a sheep that night. However, Sultan had warned his master, and the wolf was chased away with a stick. The wolf was angry and challenged Sultan to a fight in the woods.
Sultan’s only friend was an old three-legged cat. As they walked to the woods, the cat struggled and held its tail high in the air. The wolf and a wild boar saw them coming. They thought the cat’s tail was a sword and her limping was her picking up stones to throw! Frightened, the boar hid in a bush and the wolf climbed a tree.
When the cat saw the boar’s ears moving in the bush, she thought it was a mouse and bit it. The boar screamed and ran away, shouting, "The one you want is in the tree!" The wolf felt very ashamed. He came down and promised to be Sultan’s friend again.
