Step up to the counter at a French public library (la bibliothèque or la médiathèque) using polite vous forms with the staff.
- Ask about membership rules, loan limits, and how long you can keep books.
- Check if a copy is available, reserve a book that is checked out, and use the checkout desk or self-service machine.
- Renew a loan and return books on time or a little late.
Notice the pair emprunter (to borrow) and prêter (to lend), which gives the noun le prêt (the loan), and remember that renewing a book in French is prolonger le prêt.
