बेन: Vocafy Language in Real Life में फिर से आपका स्वागत है। मैं बेन हूँ और मेरे साथ एक बार फिर क्लारा हैं। आज हम ऐसी भाषा की बात कर रहे हैं जो दुनिया के एक बहुत बड़े हिस्से में बोली जाती है—उत्तरी अफ़्रीका के अटलांटिक तट से लेकर अरब प्रायद्वीप और उससे भी आगे तक।

Ben: Welcome back to Vocafy Language in Real Life. I'm Ben, here again with Clara. Today we're looking at a language spoken across a huge part of the world, from the Atlantic coast of North Africa to the Arabian Peninsula and beyond.

अरबी।

Arabic.

लेकिन क्लारा, किसी के बारे में यह कहना कि वे ‘अरबी बोलते हैं’, हमेशा यह साफ़ नहीं करता कि वे अरबी का कौन-सा रूप बोलते हैं।

But Clara, saying someone "speaks Arabic" doesn't always tell us exactly what Arabic they speak.

क्लारा: शुरुआत के लिए यही बिल्कुल सही जगह है।

Clara: That's the perfect place to start.

अरबी में सीखने वालों के लिए एक असामान्य बात है। इसका एक व्यापक रूप से साझा मानक रूप है, लेकिन रोज़मर्रा की बोलचाल एक जगह से दूसरी जगह बहुत अलग हो सकती है।

Arabic has something unusual for learners. There is a widely shared standard form, but everyday speech can vary greatly from one place to another.

मोरक्को में होने वाली बातचीत, मिस्र, लेबनान या इराक़ की बातचीत से बिल्कुल अलग सुनाई दे सकती है, भले ही सभी लोग अपनी भाषा को अरबी ही कहते हों।

A conversation in Morocco might sound very different from one in Egypt, Lebanon or Iraq, even though the speakers may all describe what they speak as Arabic.

बेन: तो क्या अरबी वास्तव में एक भाषा है या भाषाओं का एक समूह?

Ben: So is Arabic actually one language or a group of languages?

क्लारा: यहीं से बात दिलचस्प हो जाती है।

Clara: That's where things become interesting.

इसका कोई एक आसान जवाब नहीं है, क्योंकि ‘भाषा’ और ‘बोली’ केवल भाषावैज्ञानिक लेबल नहीं हैं। इतिहास, संस्कृति और पहचान भी अहम हैं।

There isn't one simple answer, because "language" and "dialect" aren't purely linguistic labels. History, culture and identity matter too.

अधिकतर लोग खुद को अरबीभाषी मानते हैं, और पूरे क्षेत्र को जोड़ने वाली एक साझा लिखित और औपचारिक भाषा भी है।

Most speakers see themselves as speaking Arabic, and there is a shared written and formal language connecting the region.

साथ ही, रोज़मर्रा में बोले जाने वाले रूप उच्चारण, शब्दावली और व्याकरण में काफ़ी अलग हो सकते हैं।

At the same time, the everyday spoken varieties can differ substantially in pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar.

भाषाविज्ञानी इस स्थिति के लिए अक्सर ‘डाइग्लोसिया’ यानी भाषाई द्विरूपता शब्द का इस्तेमाल करते हैं।

Linguists often discuss this situation using the term diglossia.

बेन: यह उन शब्दों में से है जो अपने पीछे के विचार से कहीं ज़्यादा जटिल सुनाई देते हैं।

Ben: That's one of those words that sounds much more complicated than the idea behind it.

यहाँ डाइग्लोसिया का क्या मतलब है?

What does diglossia mean here?

क्लारा: सीधे शब्दों में कहें, तो इसका मतलब है कि एक भाषा के अलग-अलग रूपों का इस्तेमाल अलग-अलग उद्देश्यों के लिए होता है।

Clara: In the simplest version, it means that different forms of a language are used for different purposes.

अरबी का एक मानक रूप है जिसका इस्तेमाल खास तौर पर लिखने और औपचारिक संवाद के लिए होता है, जबकि लोग आम तौर पर घर में अपना स्थानीय रूप बोलते हुए बड़े होते हैं।

Arabic has a standard form used especially for writing and formal communication, while people usually grow up speaking a local variety at home.

आज इस मानक रूप को आम तौर पर आधुनिक मानक अरबी या MSA कहा जाता है।

The standard form today is usually called Modern Standard Arabic, or MSA.

लेकिन यहाँ एक अहम बात है।

But there's an important detail.

असल में यह दो साफ़-सुथरे खानों वाली दुनिया नहीं है, जिसमें एक पर MSA और दूसरे पर ‘बोली’ का लेबल लगा हो।

It isn't really a neat world with two boxes, one labelled MSA and the other labelled dialect.

बेन: क्यों नहीं?

Ben: Why not?

क्लारा: क्योंकि असल बातचीत कहीं अधिक मिली-जुली होती है।

Clara: Because real speech is much messier.

लोग परिस्थिति के अनुसार अधिक औपचारिक और अधिक सहज बोलचाल के बीच आ-जा सकते हैं। वे अपने स्थानीय रूप के तत्वों के साथ मानक भाषा की विशेषताएँ भी मिला सकते हैं।

People can move between more formal and more conversational language depending on the situation. They may mix standard features with elements of their local speech.

विश्वविद्यालय की कोई चर्चा, टेलीविज़न इंटरव्यू या राजनीतिक बहस दोस्तों की बातचीत से अधिक औपचारिक सुनाई दे सकती है, लेकिन ज़रूरी नहीं कि वह पूरी तरह किताबी MSA बन जाए।

A university discussion, a television interview or a political debate might sound more formal than a conversation between friends, without necessarily becoming pure textbook MSA.

इसलिए इसे एक क्रमिक दायरे की तरह देखना अक्सर बेहतर होता है।

So it's often better to imagine a spectrum.

एक छोर पर बेहद औपचारिक मानक अरबी है और दूसरे पर बहुत स्थानीय रोज़मर्रा की बोलचाल। लोग इन दोनों के बीच आ-जा सकते हैं।

At one end you have highly formal Standard Arabic. At the other you have very local everyday speech. And people can move around between them.

बेन: चलिए, औपचारिक छोर से शुरुआत करते हैं।

Ben: Let's start with the formal end.

आख़िर आधुनिक मानक अरबी क्या है?

What exactly is Modern Standard Arabic?

क्लारा: MSA, क्लासिकल अरबी पर काफ़ी हद तक आधारित अरबी का आधुनिक मानकीकृत रूप है।

Clara: MSA is the modern standardized form of Arabic closely based on Classical Arabic.

ज़्यादातर औपचारिक लिखित सामग्री में सीखने वालों का सामना इसी भाषा से होता है। यह आपको किताबों, अख़बारों, आधिकारिक दस्तावेज़ों और बहुत-सी शैक्षिक सामग्री में मिलेगी।

It is the language learners encounter in most formal writing. You'll see it in books, newspapers, official documents and much educational material.

आप इसे समाचार प्रसारणों, पहले से तैयार भाषणों, डॉक्यूमेंट्री और दूसरी औपचारिक स्थितियों में भी सुनेंगे।

You'll also hear forms of it in news broadcasts, prepared speeches, documentaries and other formal settings.

इसकी सबसे बड़ी खूबियों में से एक यह है कि यह अरबीभाषी दुनिया को व्यापक रूप से साझा लिखित भाषा देती है।

One of its great strengths is that it gives the Arabic-speaking world a broadly shared written language.

बेन: तो मोरक्को और ओमान के लोग एक ही अख़बार का लेख पढ़ सकते हैं।

Ben: So someone in Morocco and someone in Oman could read the same newspaper article.

क्लारा: बिल्कुल, बशर्ते दोनों की मानक अरबी पर अच्छी पकड़ हो।

Clara: Exactly, assuming both have a good command of Standard Arabic.

लेकिन इसका यह मतलब नहीं कि वे आम तौर पर नाश्ते के समय भी इसी तरह बात करते हैं।

But that doesn't mean they normally speak that way over breakfast.

बच्चे आम तौर पर अपने परिवार और समुदाय में बोला जाने वाला अरबी का रूप सीखते हुए बड़े होते हैं। मानक अरबी स्कूल, पढ़ाई, मीडिया और औपचारिक कामकाज के ज़रिए कहीं अधिक महत्वपूर्ण हो जाती है।

Children typically grow up speaking the Arabic variety of their family and community. Standard Arabic becomes much more important through school, reading, media and formal life.

बेन: तो MSA आम तौर पर वह भाषा नहीं है जो बच्चे सबसे पहले अपने माता-पिता से सीखते हैं।

Ben: So MSA isn't normally the language a child first learns from their parents.

क्लारा: सही कहा।

Clara: Right.

यह एक कारण है कि अरबी सीखने वालों को कुछ असामान्य लग सकती है।

That's one reason Arabic can feel unusual to learners.

कल्पना कीजिए कि आप अंग्रेज़ी सीख रहे हैं, लेकिन फिर आपको पता चलता है कि किताबों, समाचारों और स्कूल की भाषा, लोगों द्वारा अपने परिवारों के साथ स्वाभाविक रूप से इस्तेमाल की जाने वाली भाषा से काफ़ी अलग है।

Imagine learning English, but discovering that the language of books, news and school is noticeably different from the language people naturally use with their families.

यह तुलना पूरी तरह सटीक नहीं है, लेकिन इससे आपको इस अंतर का कुछ अंदाज़ा हो जाता है।

The comparison isn't perfect, but it gives you a sense of the distance involved.

बेन: और अरबीभाषी दुनिया के अलग-अलग हिस्सों के बीच यह अंतर कितना बड़ा हो सकता है?

Ben: And how large can that distance become between different parts of the Arabic-speaking world?

क्लारा: काफ़ी बड़ा।

Clara: Quite large.

मिस्री, लेवांती, खाड़ी, इराक़ी और मग़रेबी अरबी जैसे बड़े समूह हैं, और इनके भीतर भी कई क्षेत्रीय और स्थानीय अंतर हैं।

There are broad groups such as Egyptian, Levantine, Gulf, Iraqi and Maghrebi Arabic, and within those there are many more regional and local differences.

पड़ोसी क्षेत्रों के रूपों को समझना अक्सर अपेक्षाकृत आसान होता है, जबकि दूर-दराज़ के क्षेत्रों के रूपों को समझना कहीं मुश्किल हो सकता है।

Neighbouring varieties are often relatively easy for speakers to understand, while varieties from distant regions can be much harder.

लेकिन भूगोल ही एकमात्र कारण नहीं है।

But geography isn't the only factor.

किसी रूप से आपका परिचय कितना है, यह भी मायने रखता है।

Exposure matters too.

अगर आपने वर्षों तक टेलीविज़न, संगीत या ऑनलाइन मीडिया में किसी खास रूप को सुना है, तो आप उसे भौगोलिक दूरी के आधार पर लगाए गए अनुमान से कहीं बेहतर समझ सकते हैं।

If you've spent years hearing a particular variety in television, music or online media, you may understand it much better than geographical distance alone would suggest.

बेन: और यहीं से हम मिस्र पर आते हैं।

Ben: Which brings us to Egypt.

इस कहानी के मूल संस्करण में शायद मिस्री अरबी को अरब दुनिया की अनौपचारिक साझा भाषा कहा जाता।

The original version of this story would probably call Egyptian Arabic the unofficial common language of the Arab world.

क्या यह कुछ ज़्यादा कहना होगा?

Is that going too far?

क्लारा: हाँ, लेकिन इसके पीछे एक अहम सच्चाई भी है।

Clara: Yes, but there's an important truth behind it.

बीसवीं सदी के दौरान अरबी की लोकप्रिय संस्कृति पर मिस्र का बहुत बड़ा असर रहा।

Egypt had an enormous influence on Arabic-language popular culture during the twentieth century.

मिस्री फ़िल्में, गीत, रेडियो कार्यक्रम और टेलीविज़न कार्यक्रम पूरे क्षेत्र में पहुँचे। नतीजतन, मिस्री अरबी उन करोड़ों लोगों को भी परिचित लगने लगी जो खुद इसे नहीं बोलते थे।

Egyptian films, songs, radio programmes and television travelled throughout the region. As a result, Egyptian Arabic became familiar to huge numbers of people who didn't speak it themselves.

बेन: तो कोई व्यक्ति मिस्री अरबी को कुछ हद तक इसलिए समझ सकता है क्योंकि वे मिस्री फ़िल्में देखते हुए बड़े हुए हैं।

Ben: So someone might understand Egyptian Arabic partly because they grew up watching Egyptian movies.

क्लारा: बिल्कुल।

Clara: Exactly.

यह इस बात का बेहतरीन उदाहरण है कि मीडिया किसी भाषा के अलग-अलग रूपों के बीच आपसी समझ को कैसे बदल सकता है।

It's a great example of how media can change mutual understanding between language varieties.

मिस्री अरबी ने दूसरे देशों के स्थानीय रूपों की जगह नहीं ली, और अलग-अलग क्षेत्रों के लोग मिलते ही अपने आप मिस्री अरबी में बात करना शुरू नहीं कर देते।

Egyptian Arabic didn't replace the local speech of other countries, and people from different regions don't automatically switch to Egyptian when they meet.

लेकिन दशकों की लोकप्रिय संस्कृति ने इसे अरबी के सबसे व्यापक रूप से पहचाने जाने वाले बोलचाल के रूपों में से एक बना दिया।

But decades of popular culture made it one of the most widely recognised spoken forms of Arabic.

बेन: जब दो अरबीभाषी लोग एक-दूसरे के स्थानीय रूप को आसानी से नहीं समझ पाते, तो वे क्या करते हैं?

Ben: What happens when two Arabic speakers don't easily understand each other's local speech?

क्लारा: वे अपने बोलने का तरीका बदलते हैं।

Clara: They adapt.

वे बहुत स्थानीय अभिव्यक्तियों से बच सकते हैं। वे ऐसे शब्द इस्तेमाल कर सकते हैं जिन्हें सामने वाला पहचान सके। वे अधिक व्यापक रूप से समझे जाने वाले रूपों की ओर बढ़ सकते हैं या मानक अरबी के कुछ तत्व शामिल कर सकते हैं।

They might avoid strongly local expressions. They may use vocabulary they expect the other person to recognise. They can move toward more widely understood forms or bring in elements of Standard Arabic.

वे कौन-सा तरीका अपनाते हैं, यह बोलने वालों, उनकी पृष्ठभूमि और परिस्थिति पर निर्भर करता है।

The exact strategy depends on the speakers, their backgrounds and the situation.

यह एक और कारण है कि ‘MSA बनाम बोली’ की सरल तस्वीर असल ज़िंदगी को पूरी तरह नहीं दिखाती।

That's another reason the simple picture of "MSA versus dialect" doesn't quite capture real life.

बेन: अब उस चीज़ पर नज़र डालते हैं जिस पर लगभग हर सीखने वाले का ध्यान तुरंत जाता है।

Ben: Let's look at something that almost every learner notices immediately.

अरबी लिपि।

The writing system.

क्लारा: अरबी दाएँ से बाएँ लिखी जाती है, और किसी शब्द में अक्षर कहाँ आता है, इसके अनुसार उसका आकार बदलता है।

Clara: Arabic is written from right to left, and its letters change shape depending on where they appear in a word.

शुरुआत में यह मुश्किल लग सकता है, लेकिन यह प्रणाली जितनी दिखती है, उससे कहीं अधिक नियमबद्ध है।

That can look difficult at first, but the system is much more regular than it may appear.

ज़्यादातर अक्षर अपने आसपास के अक्षरों से जुड़ते हैं, इसलिए लिखी हुई अरबी में एक बहती हुई-सी बनावट होती है, जिससे इसे तुरंत पहचाना जा सकता है।

Most letters connect to the letters around them, so written Arabic has that flowing appearance that makes it instantly recognisable.

एक और विशेषता भी है जो सीखने वालों को हैरान करती है।

There is another feature that surprises learners too.

सामान्य लिखित सामग्री में छोटे स्वरों को अक्सर लिखा ही नहीं जाता।

Short vowels are often not written in ordinary texts.

बेन: फिर लोगों को कैसे पता चलता है कि शब्द को कैसे पढ़ना है?

Ben: So how do people know what the word says?

क्लारा: मुख्य रूप से शब्दावली, व्याकरण और संदर्भ से।

Clara: Mostly from vocabulary, grammar and context.

ज़रूरत होने पर अतिरिक्त स्वर-चिह्न लगाए जा सकते हैं। ये खास तौर पर बच्चों की किताबों, धार्मिक ग्रंथों और सीखने वालों के लिए बनाई गई सामग्री में उपयोगी होते हैं।

Extra vowel marks can be added when needed, and they're especially useful in children's books, religious texts and materials for learners.

लेकिन अनुभवी पाठकों को आम लिखित सामग्री में इनकी ज़रूरत नहीं पड़ती।

But experienced readers usually don't need them for ordinary text.

बेन: यह मुश्किल लगता है।

Ben: That sounds difficult.

क्लारा: शुरुआत में ऐसा हो सकता है।

Clara: At first it can be.

लेकिन अरबी सीखने वालों को शब्दावली समझने का एक और दमदार सुराग भी देती है—इसकी मूल और शब्द-ढाँचों की प्रणाली।

But Arabic also gives learners another powerful clue to vocabulary, and that's its system of roots and patterns.

अरबी के बहुत-से शब्द तीन व्यंजनों वाले एक मूल के आसपास बनाए जाते हैं।

Many Arabic words are built around a root containing three consonants.

इसका एक जाना-माना उदाहरण K-T-B है, जो लिखने से जुड़ा है।

A classic example is K-T-B, which is associated with writing.

इस शब्द-परिवार में किताब के लिए ‘किताब’ (kitaab), लेखक के लिए ‘कातिब’ (kaatib), दफ़्तर या मेज़ के लिए ‘मकतब’ (maktab), और पुस्तकालय या किताबों की दुकान के लिए ‘मकतबा’ (maktaba) जैसे शब्द मिलते हैं।

From this family you get words such as kitaab for book, kaatib for writer, maktab for office or desk, and maktaba for library or bookshop.

बेन: यह अरबी की मेरी पसंदीदा विशेषताओं में से एक है।

Ben: That's one of my favourite features of Arabic.

K-T-B को पहचान लेने के बाद ये शब्द पूरी तरह असंबंधित नहीं लगते।

Once you recognise K-T-B, those words stop looking completely unrelated.

क्लारा: बिल्कुल।

Clara: Exactly.

लेकिन इसे ऐसा कोड नहीं समझना चाहिए जिसकी मदद से आप हर शब्द का अर्थ अपने आप पहचान सकें।

You shouldn't think of it as a code that lets you automatically guess every word.

भाषा कभी इतनी आसानी से साथ नहीं देती।

Language is never quite that cooperative.

फिर भी, मूल अरबी की विशाल शब्दावली को शब्द-परिवारों में व्यवस्थित करने में मदद करते हैं।

But roots help organise a huge amount of Arabic vocabulary into families.

जब सीखने वाले अनजान शब्दों के भीतर परिचित मूल पहचानने लगते हैं, तो भाषा बहुत कम बेतरतीब लगने लगती है।

Once learners start recognising familiar roots inside unfamiliar words, the language can begin to feel much less random.

बेन: और फिर इसकी ध्वनियाँ भी हैं।

Ben: And then there are the sounds.

अरबी के बारे में माना जाता है कि इसका उच्चारण मुश्किल है।

Arabic has a reputation for being difficult to pronounce.

क्लारा: इसमें कई ऐसी ध्वनियाँ हैं जिनकी अंग्रेज़ी बोलने वालों को आदत नहीं होती।

Clara: It does contain several sounds that English speakers aren't used to.

इसका एक मशहूर उदाहरण अरबी अक्षर ‘ऐन’ (ayn) से दर्शाई जाने वाली ध्वनि है।

One famous example is the sound represented by the Arabic letter ayn.

अरबी में व्यंजनों के ऐसे भेद भी हैं जो शुरुआत में सीखने वालों को काफ़ी एक जैसे सुनाई दे सकते हैं, लेकिन मूल वक्ताओं के लिए वे अलग-अलग शब्दों की पहचान कराते हैं।

Arabic also has consonant contrasts that can initially sound very similar to learners but distinguish words for native speakers.

चुनौती केवल किसी असामान्य ध्वनि को एक बार बोल लेना नहीं है।

The challenge isn't simply producing an unusual sound once.

आपको उस अंतर को भरोसेमंद ढंग से सुनना और फिर शब्दों व वाक्यों के भीतर स्वाभाविक रूप से उसका उच्चारण करना सीखना होता है।

You have to learn to hear the difference reliably and then produce it naturally inside words and sentences.

बेन: क्या अलग-अलग क्षेत्रीय रूपों में उच्चारण भी बदलता है?

Ben: Does pronunciation vary between the regional varieties too?

क्लारा: बहुत ज़्यादा।

Clara: Very much so.

अरबीभाषी दुनिया के अलग-अलग हिस्सों में एक ही अक्षर का उच्चारण अलग तरह से हो सकता है।

The same written letter can be pronounced differently in different parts of the Arabic-speaking world.

यह सीखने वालों को यह जानने का एक और अच्छा कारण देता है कि वे कौन-सा रूप सुन रहे हैं।

That gives learners another good reason to know which variety they're listening to.

रोज़मर्रा की अरबी का कोई एक सार्वभौमिक लहजा नहीं है जिस पर बस महारत हासिल करनी हो।

There isn't just one universal everyday Arabic accent waiting to be mastered.

बेन: और अब हम शायद इस पूरे एपिसोड के सबसे बड़े व्यावहारिक सवाल पर आते हैं।

Ben: And that brings us to probably the biggest practical question in the entire episode.

अगर मैं आज तय करूँ कि मुझे अरबी सीखनी है, तो मुझे वास्तव में क्या सीखना चाहिए?

If I decide today that I want to learn Arabic, what should I actually learn?

MSA या बोलचाल के रूपों में से कोई एक?

MSA or one of the spoken varieties?

क्लारा: सबसे अच्छा जवाब बहुत सरल है—और शायद थोड़ा खीझ पैदा करने वाला भी।

Clara: The best answer is frustratingly simple.

यह इस बात पर निर्भर करता है कि आप क्या करना चाहते हैं।

It depends on what you want to do.

अगर आप अख़बार और किताबें पढ़ना, औपचारिक समाचार समझना, लिखित अरबी में काम करना या अलग-अलग देशों में औपचारिक संदर्भों में संवाद करना चाहते हैं, तो MSA बेहद उपयोगी है।

If you want to read newspapers and books, follow formal news, work with written Arabic or communicate across countries in formal contexts, MSA is extremely valuable.

अगर आप जॉर्डन में रहने जा रहे हैं और आपका मुख्य लक्ष्य कैफ़े, दुकानों और रोज़मर्रा की ज़िंदगी में लोगों से बात करना है, तो बोलचाल की लेवांती अरबी तुरंत काम आएगी।

If you're moving to Jordan and your main goal is talking to people in cafés, shops and everyday life, spoken Levantine Arabic will be immediately useful.

अगर आप काहिरा में रह रहे हैं, तो रोज़मर्रा के लिए मिस्री अरबी स्वाभाविक विकल्प बन जाती है।

If you're living in Cairo, Egyptian Arabic becomes the obvious everyday choice.

बेन: तो MSA ऐसी मास्टर चाबी नहीं है जो अपने आप हर बातचीत का ताला खोल दे।

Ben: So MSA isn't the master key that automatically unlocks every conversation.

क्लारा: बिल्कुल।

Clara: Exactly.

यह आपको अरबी के एक साझा और बेहद अहम हिस्से तक पहुँच देती है, खास तौर पर लिखित और औपचारिक भाषा तक।

It gives you access to a shared and enormously important part of Arabic, especially the written and formal language.

लेकिन MSA जानने का यह मतलब नहीं कि आप हर देश में रोज़मर्रा की तेज़ रफ़्तार बातचीत अपने आप समझने लगेंगे।

But knowing MSA doesn't automatically mean you'll understand rapid everyday conversation in every country.

इसका उलटा भी सच है।

The reverse is also true.

केवल एक स्थानीय रूप सीखने वाला व्यक्ति उस क्षेत्र में बहुत अच्छी तरह संवाद कर सकता है, फिर भी औपचारिक लिखित सामग्री उसे मुश्किल लग सकती है।

Someone who learns only one local variety may communicate very well in that region while still finding formal writing difficult.

बेन: क्या सीखने वालों को इनमें से एक चुनकर दूसरे को नज़रअंदाज़ करना पड़ता है?

Ben: Do learners have to choose one and ignore the other?

क्लारा: बिल्कुल नहीं।

Clara: Not at all.

जो लोग अरबी को गंभीरता से सीखना चाहते हैं, उनमें से बहुतों के लिए बोलचाल के एक रूप के साथ कुछ MSA सीखना काफ़ी उपयोगी होता है।

For many serious learners, learning some MSA alongside one spoken variety makes a lot of sense.

आप MSA के ज़रिए लिपि, पढ़ना और व्यापक औपचारिक शब्दावली सीख सकते हैं, और साथ ही धीरे-धीरे उस रूप में सुनने व बोलने का कौशल विकसित कर सकते हैं जो आपकी ज़िंदगी के लिए सबसे उपयोगी है।

You might learn the script, reading and broader formal vocabulary through MSA while gradually building your listening and speaking skills in the variety most relevant to your life.

दोनों में से किस पर कितना ध्यान देना है, यह आपके लक्ष्यों के साथ बदल सकता है।

How much attention you give each one can change with your goals.

बेन: यह उस सलाह से कहीं ज़्यादा व्यावहारिक लगता है कि हर किसी को पहले दो साल MSA पर लगाने चाहिए और उसके बाद ही सीखना चाहिए कि लोग वास्तव में कैसे बोलते हैं।

Ben: That feels more realistic than saying everyone should spend two years on MSA and only then start learning how people actually talk.

क्लारा: कहीं ज़्यादा व्यावहारिक।

Clara: Much more realistic.

हर सीखने वाले के लिए कोई एक सही रास्ता नहीं है।

There isn't one correct route for every learner.

अरबी साहित्य पढ़ने वाले व्यक्ति की ज़रूरतें बेरूत में रहने जा रहे व्यक्ति से अलग हैं, और उन दोनों की ज़रूरतें उस व्यक्ति से अलग हैं जो केवल अपने रिश्तेदारों से बात करना चाहता है।

Someone studying Arabic literature has different needs from someone moving to Beirut, and both have different needs from someone who simply wants to speak with relatives.

अहम बात यह है कि शुरुआत से ही समझ लिया जाए कि अरबी के अलग-अलग रूप अलग-अलग उद्देश्यों के काम आते हैं।

The important thing is to understand from the beginning that Arabic has different forms serving different purposes.

तब यह विविधता बाद में अचानक चौंकाने वाली चीज़ नहीं, बल्कि ऐसी बात बन जाती है जिसके लिए आप पहले से योजना बना सकते हैं।

Then the variation becomes something you can plan for rather than something that surprises you later.

बेन: और इससे हम फिर अपने शीर्षक पर लौट आते हैं।

Ben: Which brings us back to our title.

एक भाषा, हज़ार आवाज़ें।

One language, a thousand voices.

क्लारा: बिल्कुल।

Clara: Exactly.

बेशक, ‘हज़ार’ एक काव्यात्मक अभिव्यक्ति है, लेकिन इसके पीछे का विचार महत्वपूर्ण है।

The "thousand" is poetic, of course, but the idea matters.

अरबी की एक समृद्ध साझा परंपरा और व्यापक रूप से इस्तेमाल होने वाला मानक रूप है, जबकि रोज़मर्रा की बोलचाल इसे बोलने वालों के विशाल भौगोलिक फैलाव और विविधता को दर्शाती है।

Arabic has a powerful shared tradition and a widely used standard form, while everyday speech reflects the enormous geography and diversity of the people who use it.

ये दोनों बातें एक-दूसरे को नहीं नकारतीं।

Those two things don't cancel each other out.

दोनों ही अरबी का हिस्सा हैं।

They're both part of Arabic.

बेन: तो शायद दिलचस्प सवाल यह नहीं है कि अरबी वास्तव में एक भाषा है या असल में कई भाषाएँ।

Ben: So perhaps the interesting question isn't whether Arabic is really one language or secretly many languages.

क्लारा: मुझे भी यही लगता है।

Clara: I think that's right.

सीखने वालों के लिए अधिक उपयोगी सवाल यह है कि इसके अलग-अलग रूप आपस में कैसे जुड़ते हैं।

For a learner, the more useful question is how its different forms connect.

आप अख़बार में जो भाषा पढ़ते हैं, किसी औपचारिक भाषण में सुनते हैं, मिस्री फ़िल्म में देखते हैं और अम्मान की बातचीत में इस्तेमाल करते हैं, वे एक जैसी नहीं सुनाई दे सकतीं।

The language you read in a newspaper, hear in a formal speech, watch in an Egyptian film and use in a conversation in Amman may not sound the same.

लेकिन वे पूरी तरह अलग-थलग दुनियाएँ भी नहीं हैं।

But they're not isolated worlds either.

अरबी सीखने का अर्थ है धीरे-धीरे इस भाषाई दुनिया में अपना रास्ता बनाना सीखना।

Learning Arabic means gradually learning how to move through that landscape.

बेन: और अचानक यह जटिलता किसी समस्या से कम और भाषा को दिलचस्प बनाने वाली विशेषता से ज़्यादा लगने लगती है।

Ben: And suddenly the complexity starts looking less like a problem and more like part of what makes the language interesting.

क्लारा: बिल्कुल।

Clara: Exactly.

आपको हर रूप सीखने की ज़रूरत नहीं है।

You don't need to learn every variety.

आपको यह जानना है कि आप अरबी क्यों सीख रहे हैं, शुरुआत के लिए उपयोगी बिंदु चुनना है और समझना है कि जैसे-जैसे आप आगे बढ़ेंगे, भाषा अलग-अलग दिशाओं में खुलती जाएगी।

You need to know why you're learning Arabic, choose a useful place to begin, and understand that the language will open up in different directions as you go.

बेन: मुझे लगता है कि यह अरबी के किसी एक जादुई रूप की तलाश करने से कहीं बेहतर जवाब है जो हर जगह काम करे।

Ben: I think that's a much better answer than looking for one magical version of Arabic that works everywhere.

क्लारा, इसे समझने में हमारी मदद करने के लिए धन्यवाद।

Clara, thanks for helping us unpack it.

क्लारा: खुशी हुई, बेन।

Clara: My pleasure, Ben.

बेन: और सुनने वाले सभी लोगों का धन्यवाद। Vocafy Language in Real Life के अगले एपिसोड में फिर मिलेंगे।

Ben: And thanks to everyone listening. We'll see you next time on Vocafy Language in Real Life.
