बेन: Vocafy Unpacked में आपका फिर से स्वागत है। मैं बेन हूँ और मेरे साथ क्लारा हैं। आज हम लगभग एक सदी पीछे जाकर एक ऐसी महिला से मिलेंगे, जिनका भाषा सीखने का तरीका आश्चर्यजनक रूप से आधुनिक लग सकता है।

Ben: Welcome back to Vocafy Unpacked. I'm Ben, and I'm here with Clara. Today we're going back almost a century to meet someone whose approach to language learning can sound surprisingly modern.

क्लारा: नमस्ते बेन। और शायद मुझे शुरुआत में ही मान लेना चाहिए कि इस कहानी से मुझे खास लगाव है। कातो लोम्ब उन भाषा सीखने वालों में से एक हैं जिनकी मैं सबसे अधिक प्रशंसा करती हूँ।

Clara: Hi Ben. And I should probably admit from the beginning that I have a soft spot for this one. Kató Lomb is one of the language learners I admire most.

बेन: यह तो बहुत ज़ोरदार सिफ़ारिश है। वे कौन थीं?

Ben: That's a strong recommendation. Who was she?

क्लारा: वे हंगरी की थीं, उनका जन्म 1909 में हुआ था और उनका मूल शैक्षणिक क्षेत्र भाषाओं से बिल्कुल अलग था। उन्होंने भौतिकी और रसायन विज्ञान की पढ़ाई की और रसायन विज्ञान में डॉक्टरेट हासिल की।

Clara: She was Hungarian, born in 1909, and her original academic world wasn't languages at all. She studied physics and chemistry and earned a doctorate in chemistry.

बाद में वे अनुवादक और शुरुआती समकालिक दुभाषियों में से एक बनीं। अपने करियर के शिखर पर उन्होंने 16 भाषाओं में पेशेवर रूप से काम किया।

She later became a translator and one of the early simultaneous interpreters. At the height of her career, she worked professionally with 16 languages.

बेन: सोलह भाषाएँ तो लगभग अविश्वसनीय लगती हैं।

Ben: Sixteen sounds almost unbelievable.

क्लारा: लगती तो हैं, लेकिन लोम्ब खुद इस संख्या को लेकर बहुत सावधान थीं।

Clara: It does, but Lomb herself was careful about that number.

उन्होंने खुलकर कहा था कि वे सभी 16 भाषाएँ एक ही स्तर पर नहीं जानती थीं।

She openly said that she did not know all 16 languages at the same level.

हंगेरियन, रूसी, अंग्रेज़ी, फ़्रेंच और जर्मन जैसी कुछ भाषाओं का वे बहुत सहजता से उपयोग कर सकती थीं। कुछ अन्य भाषाओं में वे तैयारी के बाद अनुवाद या दुभाषिए का काम कर सकती थीं। वहीं कुछ भाषाओं के साथ वे मुख्य रूप से लिखित पाठों के ज़रिए काम करती थीं।

There were languages such as Hungarian, Russian, English, French and German that she could use very freely. With some others she could translate or interpret after preparation. And there were languages she mainly worked with through written texts.

बेन: मुझे यह जवाब उन आम बहुभाषी कहानियों से कहीं बेहतर लगा, जिनमें दावा किया जाता है कि कोई तीस भाषाएँ पूरी तरह बोलता है।

Ben: I already like that answer more than the usual polyglot story where somebody supposedly speaks thirty languages perfectly.

क्लारा: बिल्कुल।

Clara: Exactly.

वे भाषा सीखने को कोई जादू बनाकर पेश नहीं करना चाहती थीं।

She wasn't interested in turning language learning into magic.

दरअसल, उनके लेखन में बार-बार आने वाले विषयों में से एक इसका लगभग उलटा था। वे भाषाओं के लिए जन्मजात प्रतिभा होने की धारणा से जुड़ा कुछ रहस्य दूर करना चाहती थीं।

In fact, one of the recurring themes in her writing was almost the opposite. She wanted to remove some of the mystery surrounding the idea of being naturally gifted at languages.

बेन: क्या वे उन लोगों में से थीं जो बचपन से ही बड़ी कुशलता से भाषाएँ सीखते आ रहे थे?

Ben: Was she one of those people who had been learning languages brilliantly since childhood?

क्लारा: नहीं, और यही उनकी कहानी के इतना दिलचस्प होने की एक वजह है।

Clara: No, and that's one reason her story is so interesting.

उन्होंने स्कूल में कुछ भाषाएँ सीखी थीं, लेकिन वे खुद को कोई असाधारण भाषा विद्यार्थी नहीं मानती थीं।

She had learned some languages at school, but she didn't describe herself as a remarkable language student.

अपने दम पर गंभीरता से भाषाएँ सीखने की उनकी यात्रा वास्तव में वयस्क होने के बाद शुरू हुई।

Her serious independent language-learning journey really began as an adult.

1933 में वे नौकरी पाने की संभावनाएँ बेहतर करना चाहती थीं, इसलिए उन्होंने खुद से अंग्रेज़ी सीखना शुरू किया।

In 1933 she wanted to improve her employment prospects, so she began teaching herself English.

बेन: कैसे?

Ben: How?

क्लारा: एक उपन्यास से।

Clara: With a novel.

और वह भाषा सीखने वालों के लिए खास तौर पर सरल बनाया गया कोई उपन्यास नहीं था।

And not a specially simplified learner book.

उन्होंने जॉन गॉल्सवर्दी के एक उपन्यास पर गहराई से काम करना शुरू किया।

She began working intensively with a novel by John Galsworthy.

शुरू में वे बहुत कम समझ पाती थीं। बाद में उन्होंने लिखा कि एक सप्ताह के बाद वे पाठ का अर्थ कुछ-कुछ समझने लगी थीं, लगभग एक महीने बाद वे उसे समझ सकती थीं और दो महीने बाद उसका आनंद लेने लगी थीं।

At first she understood very little. She later wrote that after a week she was beginning to sense her way through the text, after about a month she could understand it, and after two months she was enjoying it.

बेन: यह प्रेरणादायक भी लग सकता है और डरावना भी—इस पर निर्भर करता है कि आप इस समय किस पन्ने पर अटके हैं।

Ben: That sounds either inspiring or terrifying, depending on what page you're currently stuck on.

क्लारा: शायद दोनों।

Clara: Probably both.

लेकिन इससे हमें लोम्ब के बारे में एक महत्वपूर्ण बात पता चलती है।

But this tells us something important about Lomb.

वे अधूरी समझ के साथ आगे बढ़ने को तैयार थीं।

She was willing to tolerate partial understanding.

वे नहीं मानती थीं कि किसी पाठ के उपयोगी बनने से पहले आपको उसका हर शब्द जानना ज़रूरी है।

She didn't think you had to know every word before a text became useful.

बेन: यह उस तरीके से काफ़ी अलग है जिससे हममें से कई लोगों ने स्कूल में भाषाएँ सीखी थीं।

Ben: That's quite different from how many of us learned languages at school.

आप एक अनुच्छेद पढ़ते हैं, हर अनजान शब्द पर रुकते हैं, उसका अर्थ खोजते हैं, उसे लिखते हैं और अंत तक पहुँचते-पहुँचते भूल जाते हैं कि अनुच्छेद किस बारे में था।

You read a paragraph, stop at every unknown word, look it up, write it down, and by the time you reach the end you've forgotten what the paragraph was about.

क्लारा: बिल्कुल।

Clara: Exactly.

लोम्ब शब्दकोशों का उपयोग करती थीं। वे उनके बिल्कुल खिलाफ़ नहीं थीं।

Lomb used dictionaries. She wasn't against them at all.

लेकिन वे नहीं चाहती थीं कि शब्दकोश पढ़ने की प्रक्रिया पर हावी हो जाए।

But she didn't want the dictionary to control the reading.

नई किताब पढ़ते समय वे अक्सर पहले संदर्भ से अर्थ समझने की कोशिश करती थीं। उपयोगी शब्दों को अलग-अलग लिखने के बजाय वे उन्हें वाक्यों के साथ नोट करती थीं। बाद में दोबारा पढ़ते समय ही वे उन बातों में से अधिक के अर्थ खोजती थीं जिन्हें वे अब भी नहीं समझ पाई थीं।

When reading a new book, she often tried first to work out meaning from the context. She would record useful words together with sentences rather than as isolated items. Only on later readings would she look up more of what she still didn't understand.

बेन: यानी कहानी पहले आती थी और शब्दावली का पूरा ज्ञान बाद में।

Ben: So the story came first and complete vocabulary knowledge came later.

क्लारा: इसे समझाने का यह एक उचित तरीका है।

Clara: That's a fair way to describe it.

और क्या पढ़ना है, इसका चुनाव उनके लिए बेहद महत्वपूर्ण था।

And the choice of what to read mattered enormously to her.

उनकी सबसे सरल सलाहों में से एक थी कि ऐसी चीज़ चुनिए जिसमें आपकी सचमुच दिलचस्पी हो।

One of her simplest recommendations was to choose something that genuinely interests you.

कोई जासूसी कहानी, तकनीकी पाठ, पत्रिका—कुछ भी जो आपको आगे पढ़ते रहने के लिए प्रेरित करे।

A detective story, a technical text, a magazine, whatever pulls you forward.

बेन: यह तो लगभग साफ़-साफ़ समझ आने वाली बात लगती है।

Ben: That sounds almost obvious.

क्लारा: अब तो लगती है।

Clara: It does now.

लेकिन इसके पीछे एक व्यावहारिक समझ है।

But there's a practical insight underneath it.

किसी विदेशी भाषा का कठिन पाठ रुकावट पैदा करता है। अगर आपको इसकी परवाह ही नहीं कि अगले पन्ने पर क्या होगा, तो पढ़ना छोड़ देना बहुत आसान है।

A difficult foreign-language text creates friction. If you don't care what happens on the next page, it's very easy to stop.

जिज्ञासा आपको तब भी आगे बढ़ते रहने की वजह देती है, जब आपकी समझ अधूरी हो।

Curiosity gives you a reason to keep going even when your understanding is incomplete.

लोम्ब ने इस बारे में बहुत स्पष्टता से लिखा। उनके अनुसार, रुचि उन शक्तियों में से एक थी जो भाषा से झुंझलाहट होने के पलों में भी सीखने वालों को आगे बढ़ाती थी।

Lomb wrote very directly about this. Interest, in her view, was one of the forces that helped learners through those moments when the language itself became frustrating.

बेन: और अंग्रेज़ी अकेली भाषा नहीं थी जिसे उन्होंने इस तरह सीखा।

Ben: And English wasn't the only language she learned that way.

क्लारा: बिल्कुल नहीं।

Clara: Far from it.

रूसी भाषा इसका एक और बेहतरीन उदाहरण है।

Russian gives us another great example.

1941 में लोम्ब ने रूसी सीखने का फैसला किया।

In 1941, Lomb decided to learn Russian.

उन्हें पुरानी किताबों की एक दुकान में दो खंडों वाला पुराना रूसी-अंग्रेज़ी शब्दकोश मिला। वह 1860 में प्रकाशित हुआ था और ज़ाहिर तौर पर उसकी हालत बहुत खराब थी।

She found an old two-volume Russian-English dictionary in a secondhand bookshop. It had been published in 1860 and was apparently in pretty terrible condition.

उन्होंने उसे खरीदा और काम शुरू कर दिया।

She bought it and started working.

बेन: क्या 1941 के हंगरी में रूसी सीखना राजनीतिक रूप से काफ़ी असहज स्थिति पैदा नहीं करता था?

Ben: Wasn't learning Russian in Hungary in 1941 politically rather awkward?

क्लारा: बिल्कुल करता था।

Clara: Very much so.

हंगरी धुरी राष्ट्रों के खेमे में और गहराई से शामिल हो रहा था, इसलिए खुले तौर पर रूसी पढ़ने से अनचाहा ध्यान आकर्षित हो सकता था।

Hungary was moving deeper into the Axis camp, so openly studying Russian could attract unwanted attention.

लोम्ब पहले ही पाठों के माध्यम से सीखने का एक तरीका विकसित कर चुकी थीं, जो इसलिए उपयोगी साबित हुआ क्योंकि औपचारिक अवसर सीमित थे।

Lomb had already developed a way of learning through texts, which became useful because formal opportunities were limited.

उन्होंने रूसी साहित्य की उत्कृष्ट कृतियाँ पढ़ने की कोशिश की, लेकिन शुरुआत में वे उन्हें बहुत कठिन लगीं। फिर उन्हें एक कहीं आसान उपन्यास मिला और उन्होंने उसके साथ काम किया।

She tried classic Russian literature but initially found it too difficult. Then she found a much easier novel and worked through that instead.

बाद में युद्ध के दौरान भी उन्होंने बेहद कठिन परिस्थितियों में रूसी पढ़ना जारी रखा।

Later, during the war, she continued reading Russian even under extremely difficult circumstances.

बेन: तो यह सावधानी से तैयार किया गया कोई भाषा पाठ्यक्रम नहीं था।

Ben: So this wasn't a carefully designed language course.

क्लारा: बिल्कुल भी नहीं।

Clara: Not remotely.

और यह उनके जीवन का एक और प्रमुख विषय है।

And that's another theme in her life.

उन्हें जो कुछ मिल सकता था, वे उसका उपयोग करती थीं।

She used what she could find.

किताबें, शब्दकोश, रेडियो, अखबार, बातचीत और तकनीकी दस्तावेज़।

Books, dictionaries, radio, newspapers, conversations, technical documents.

उन्होंने एक बार विदेशी भाषा को एक ऐसे किले जैसा बताया था जिस पर हर दिशा से हमला किया जाना चाहिए।

She once described a foreign language as something like a castle that should be attacked from every direction.

बेन: यह बिल्कुल लोम्ब जैसी बात है।

Ben: That's very Lomb.

क्लारा: बिल्कुल।

Clara: Very much so.

और यह इसलिए महत्वपूर्ण है क्योंकि उनका दर्शन केवल इतना नहीं था कि “उपन्यास पढ़िए और बाकी सबको अनदेखा कर दीजिए।”

And it matters because her philosophy wasn't simply "read novels and ignore everything else."

वे रेडियो भी सुनती थीं, शब्दकोश इस्तेमाल करती थीं, शिक्षकों और मातृभाषी वक्ताओं की मदद लेती थीं, भाषा के पैटर्न का अध्ययन करती थीं, पाठों का अनुवाद करती थीं और सोच-समझकर बोलने का अभ्यास करती थीं।

She also listened to radio, used dictionaries, sought teachers and native speakers, studied patterns, translated texts and deliberately practised speaking.

उनका तरीका व्यापक था।

Her approach was broad.

बेन: व्याकरण के बारे में उनका क्या विचार था?

Ben: What about grammar?

उनकी कहानी के आम वर्णन में कहा जाता है कि उन्होंने व्याकरण को लगभग अनदेखा कर दिया और संदर्भ से स्वाभाविक रूप से सब कुछ सीख लिया।

The usual retelling of her story is that she basically ignored grammar and learned everything naturally from context.

क्लारा: यह बात कुछ ज़्यादा ही सरल बना दी गई है।

Clara: That's too simple.

उन्हें यह विचार पसंद नहीं था कि भाषा सीखने की शुरुआत और अंत शब्द-सूचियाँ याद करने और व्याकरण के नियमों को समझने तक ही सीमित होना चाहिए।

She disliked the idea that language learning should begin and end with memorising vocabulary lists and digesting grammar rules.

वे पहले भाषा के माध्यम से पैटर्न खोजना और फिर जो कुछ देख रही थीं उसे समझने में व्याकरण की मदद लेना पसंद करती थीं।

She preferred discovering patterns through the language itself and then using grammar to help make sense of what she was seeing.

इसलिए वे यह नहीं कह रही थीं कि व्याकरण बेकार है।

So she wasn't saying that grammar is useless.

वे बस प्राथमिकताओं का क्रम बदल रही थीं।

She was changing the order of importance.

पहले भाषा, फिर उसे समझने में मदद के लिए विश्लेषण।

Language first, analysis in support of it.

बेन: यह एक महत्वपूर्ण अंतर लगता है।

Ben: That feels like an important distinction.

क्लारा: है भी।

Clara: It is.

हमें यह भी याद रखना चाहिए कि लोम्ब कई वर्षों के अनुभव से बता रही थीं कि उनके लिए क्या कारगर रहा।

We should also remember that Lomb was describing what worked for her over many years.

उनकी किताबें नियंत्रित वैज्ञानिक प्रयोग नहीं हैं।

Her books aren't controlled scientific experiments.

उनके कुछ विचार आज भाषा शिक्षकों और शोधकर्ताओं की चर्चाओं से आसानी से मेल खाते हैं। अन्य विचार केवल एक बेहद अनुभवी भाषा सीखने वाली की टिप्पणियाँ हैं।

Some of her ideas fit comfortably with things language teachers and researchers discuss today. Others are simply the observations of an exceptionally experienced learner.

उन्हें इतना दिलचस्प बनाने वाली बात यह है कि वे लगातार व्यावहारिक सवाल पूछती रहीं।

What makes her fascinating is that she kept asking practical questions.

मेरी रुचि किससे बनी रहती है?

What keeps me interested?

मुझे बोलने से डर किस बात का लगता है?

What makes me afraid to speak?

मैं इस भाषा को अपने जीवन का हिस्सा कैसे बना सकती हूँ?

How can I fit this language into my life?

किसी व्याख्या की ओर जाने से पहले मैं संदर्भ से क्या सीख सकती हूँ?

What can I learn from context before reaching for an explanation?

बेन: और अब बात आती है उनके प्रसिद्ध समीकरण की।

Ben: Which brings us to her famous equation.

क्लारा: हाँ।

Clara: Yes.

आखिरकार लोम्ब ने भाषा सीखने में सफलता के अपने विचार को जानबूझकर एक सरल फ़ॉर्मूले में व्यक्त किया।

Lomb eventually expressed her view of language-learning success with a deliberately simple formula.

लगाया गया समय और प्रेरणा जोड़कर, उसे झिझक से भाग देने पर परिणाम मिलता है।

Invested time plus motivation, divided by inhibition, gives the result.

बेन: यह एक रसायनशास्त्री जैसा ही काम है।

Ben: That's a very chemist-like thing to do.

क्लारा: बिल्कुल।

Clara: It is.

और वे अच्छी तरह जानती थीं कि इंसान के सीखने की प्रक्रिया को सचमुच किसी समीकरण में नहीं समेटा जा सकता।

And she knew perfectly well that human learning couldn't literally be reduced to an equation.

मुख्य बात इन कारकों के बीच का संबंध था।

The point was the relationship between those factors.

भाषा के साथ अधिक सार्थक समय बिताइए।

Spend more meaningful time with the language.

उसे सीखने की एक अधिक मज़बूत वजह रखिए।

Have a stronger reason to learn it.

और उस झिझक को कम कीजिए जो आपको वास्तव में भाषा का उपयोग करने से रोकती है।

And reduce the inhibition that stops you from actually using it.

बेन: झिझक से उनका ठीक-ठीक क्या मतलब था?

Ben: What exactly did she mean by inhibition?

क्लारा: इसका एक महत्वपूर्ण हिस्सा था गलतियाँ करने का डर।

Clara: One important part was fear of making mistakes.

आप उस एहसास को जानते हैं।

You know the feeling.

आपको मोटे तौर पर पता है कि आप क्या कहना चाहते हैं, लेकिन यह भरोसा नहीं कि वाक्य सही है, इसलिए आप कुछ नहीं कहते।

You know roughly what you want to say, but you're not sure the sentence is correct, so you say nothing.

लोम्ब के लिए ऐसी हिचकिचाहट एक गंभीर रुकावट बन सकती थी।

For Lomb, that hesitation could become a serious obstacle.

उनका मानना था कि अधूरा या त्रुटिपूर्ण संवाद भी मूल्यवान होता है।

She believed that imperfect communication still had value.

बेन: यहीं से उनकी प्रसिद्ध पंक्ति आती है।

Ben: That's where her famous line comes from.

क्लारा: हाँ।

Clara: Yes.

वे कहा करती थीं कि भाषाएँ ही एक ऐसी चीज़ हैं जिन्हें थोड़ा-बहुत जानना भी सार्थक है।

She liked to say that languages were the only thing worth knowing even poorly.

और इस पंक्ति के पीछे का विचार उस कथन से भी अधिक दिलचस्प है।

And the idea behind that line is more interesting than the quote itself.

अगर आपकी इतालवी सही नहीं है, लेकिन उससे आप यह पूछ पाते हैं कि मिलान जाने वाली ट्रेन कौन-सी है, तो भाषा पहले ही कोई उपयोगी काम कर चुकी है।

If your Italian is imperfect but it helps you ask which train goes to Milan, the language has already done something useful.

व्याकरण की दृष्टि से अधूरा वाक्य भी दो लोगों को जोड़ सकता है।

A grammatically imperfect sentence can still connect two people.

बेन: इसका अर्थ यह नहीं कि गलतियाँ मायने नहीं रखतीं।

Ben: Which doesn't mean mistakes don't matter.

क्लारा: बिल्कुल।

Clara: Exactly.

लोम्ब चाहती थीं कि उनकी गलतियाँ सुधारी जाएँ। वे ऐसे शिक्षकों और वक्ताओं को महत्व देती थीं जो उन्हें सुधार सकें।

Lomb wanted corrections. She valued teachers and speakers who could correct her.

बात गलतियों का जश्न मनाने की नहीं थी।

The point wasn't to celebrate mistakes.

बात यह थी कि गलतियों का डर संवाद को न रोके।

It was not to let the fear of them prevent communication.

यह बिल्कुल अलग विचार है।

That's a very different idea.

बेन: यानी आत्मविश्वास का मतलब यह दिखावा करना नहीं था कि आप सही हैं।

Ben: So confidence wasn't pretending you were correct.

क्लारा: सही कहा।

Clara: Right.

इसका मतलब था कोशिश करने, अपनी गलती जानने, उसे सुधारने और आगे बढ़ते रहने के लिए तैयार होना।

It was being willing to try, discover that you were wrong, adjust, and continue.

बेन: आपने समीकरण में प्रेरणा का भी ज़िक्र किया। क्या उनका मतलब उस तरह की प्रेरणा से था जिसमें आप खुद को हर रात पढ़ने के लिए मजबूर करते हैं, क्योंकि आपने कोई महँगा कोर्स खरीद लिया है?

Ben: You mentioned motivation in the equation too. Did she mean the kind of motivation where you make yourself study every night because you've bought an expensive course?

क्लारा: पूरी तरह नहीं।

Clara: Not quite.

लोम्ब के लिए प्रेरणा अक्सर बहुत ठोस होती थी।

For Lomb, motivation was often very concrete.

उन्होंने अंग्रेज़ी कुछ हद तक इसलिए सीखी क्योंकि उन्हें काम की ज़रूरत थी।

She learned English partly because she needed work.

उन्होंने जापानी सीखना इसलिए शुरू किया क्योंकि उन्होंने एक जापानी रासायनिक पेटेंट का अनुवाद करने का काफ़ी महत्वाकांक्षी काम अपने हाथ में लिया था। उस समय हंगरी में जापानी शिक्षक या पाठ्यपुस्तक खोजना बेहद कठिन था।

She began Japanese because she had taken on the rather ambitious task of translating a Japanese chemical patent at a time when finding a Japanese teacher or textbook in Hungary was extremely difficult.

उनकी जिज्ञासा भी मायने रखती थी।

Her curiosity mattered too.

उन्हें किसी भाषा की पहेली सुलझाने में सचमुच आनंद आता था।

She genuinely enjoyed solving the puzzle of a language.

बेन: यानी प्रेरणा का मतलब जीवन भर का कोई बहुत बड़ा सपना होना ज़रूरी नहीं था।

Ben: So motivation wasn't necessarily some grand lifelong dream.

क्लारा: बिल्कुल।

Clara: Exactly.

यह पेशेवर ज़रूरत, जिज्ञासा, कोई ऐसी किताब जिसे आप समझना चाहते हों, कोई ऐसा व्यक्ति जिससे आप बात करना चाहते हों, या बस किसी चीज़ को समझ लेने का आनंद हो सकता है।

It could be professional necessity, curiosity, a book you wanted to understand, a person you wanted to speak with, or simply the pleasure of figuring something out.

और वे भाषा सीखने को पूरी तरह अलग ज़िम्मेदारी बनाने के बजाय उसे जीवन के बाकी हिस्सों से जोड़ने की कोशिश करती थीं।

And she tried to connect language learning with the rest of life rather than making it a completely separate duty.

बेन: इससे हम उनकी एक और सलाह पर आते हैं—भाषा से रोज़ाना संपर्क।

Ben: Which leads into another piece of advice associated with her. Daily contact.

क्लारा: हाँ।

Clara: Yes.

लोम्ब के व्यावहारिक सुझावों में से एक था हर दिन भाषा के साथ कुछ समय बिताना।

One of Lomb's practical suggestions was to spend some time with the language every day.

अगर समय कम हो, तो वे कम से कम दस मिनट का एकालाप करने की कोशिश करने की सलाह देती थीं।

If time was short, she suggested at least trying a ten-minute monologue.

यह दावा करने से यह बात काफ़ी अलग है कि दस मिनट वैज्ञानिक रूप से कोई आदर्श अवधि है।

That's quite different from claiming that ten minutes is some scientifically perfect dose.

बेन: यानी कोई जादुई टाइमर नहीं।

Ben: So no magical timer.

क्लारा: नहीं।

Clara: No.

उनकी बड़ी बात निरंतरता थी।

Her larger point was continuity.

सिर्फ इसलिए लंबे समय तक भाषा से दूर मत रहिए कि आप पढ़ाई का लंबा सत्र नहीं कर सकते।

Don't disappear from the language for long periods just because you can't fit in a serious study session.

ज़रूरत हो तो गतिविधि बदल दीजिए।

Change the activity if necessary.

कुछ पढ़िए।

Read something.

कुछ सुनिए।

Listen.

मन-ही-मन एक छोटा-सा एकालाप कीजिए।

Think through a little monologue.

शब्दकोश के कुछ पन्ने देखिए।

Look through a dictionary.

भाषा के साथ अपना रिश्ता जीवित रखिए।

Keep the relationship with the language alive.

बेन: क्या वे सचमुच खुद से बातें करती थीं?

Ben: Did she really talk to herself?

क्लारा: वे उस अभ्यास की पुरज़ोर सलाह देती थीं जिसे वे एकालाप या आंतरिक एकालाप कहती थीं।

Clara: She strongly recommended what she called monologues or inner monologues.

उनका मानना था कि आसपास बात करने वाला कोई न हो, तब भी सीखने वालों को उस भाषा में अपने विचार व्यक्त करने का अभ्यास करना चाहिए।

She thought learners should practise constructing thoughts in the language even when there was nobody around to talk to.

यह एक बहुत व्यावहारिक वजह से उपयोगी है।

That's useful for a very practical reason.

बातचीत में आपको हर वाक्य बनाने के लिए असीमित समय नहीं मिलता।

Conversation doesn't give you unlimited time to build every sentence.

अकेले अभ्यास करने से आपको पता चलता है कि आप क्या व्यक्त कर सकते हैं और कहाँ अटकते हैं।

Practising on your own lets you notice what you can express and where you get stuck.

बेन: यानी किसी असली बातचीत के दौरान यह पता चलने का इंतज़ार न करना कि मुझे बिल्कुल नहीं मालूम कि मैंने कल क्या किया था, यह कैसे समझाऊँ।

Ben: So rather than waiting for a real conversation to discover that I have absolutely no idea how to explain what I did yesterday.

क्लारा: बिल्कुल।

Clara: Precisely.

आप अपनी रसोई में सुरक्षित ढंग से इस समस्या का पता लगा सकते हैं।

You can discover that problem safely in your kitchen.

फिर आप ज़रूरी शब्द और अभिव्यक्तियाँ खोज सकते हैं।

And then you can find the missing language.

बेन: इस सबकी सादगी में एक अलग ही आकर्षण है।

Ben: There's something appealingly unglamorous about all this.

एक किताब पढ़िए।

Read a book.

जब मदद मिले, शब्दकोश का उपयोग कीजिए।

Use a dictionary when it helps.

रेडियो सुनिए।

Listen to the radio.

खुद से बात कीजिए।

Talk to yourself.

आगे बढ़ते रहिए।

Keep going.

क्लारा: यही एक वजह है कि मुझे लोम्ब इतनी पसंद हैं।

Clara: That's one of the reasons I like Lomb so much.

उनकी उपलब्धियाँ असाधारण थीं, लेकिन उनकी सलाह आम तौर पर असाधारण नहीं थी।

Her achievements were extraordinary, but her advice usually wasn't.

उन्होंने सीखने वालों को कोई ऐसी गुप्त तकनीक नहीं दी जिससे भाषा सीखना बेहद आसान हो जाए।

She didn't give learners a secret technique that would make a language effortless.

उन्होंने समय, जिज्ञासा, लगन और अधूरे ज्ञान के साथ भी काम करने की इच्छा पर ज़ोर दिया।

She emphasized time, curiosity, persistence and willingness to work with incomplete knowledge.

बेन: और कभी-कभी थोड़ा मूर्ख दिखने के लिए तैयार रहने पर भी।

Ben: And willingness to look slightly foolish sometimes.

क्लारा: बिल्कुल।

Clara: Absolutely.

लेकिन एक और बात है जिसके बारे में मुझे लगता है कि हमें सावधान रहना चाहिए।

But there's one more thing I think we should be careful about.

लोम्ब के जीवन को इस बात का प्रमाण बना देना आसान है कि सही तरीका अपनाकर कोई भी सोलह भाषाएँ सीख सकता है।

It's tempting to turn Lomb's life into proof that anybody can learn sixteen languages if they just use the right method.

लेकिन असली सीख यह नहीं है।

That's not really the lesson.

बेन: क्योंकि वे स्पष्ट रूप से एक असाधारण व्यक्ति थीं।

Ben: Because she was clearly an unusual person.

क्लारा: बेहद असाधारण।

Clara: Very unusual.

वे असाधारण रूप से दृढ़ थीं, बौद्धिक जिज्ञासा से भरपूर थीं और उन्होंने दशकों तक भाषाओं के साथ पेशेवर रूप से काम किया।

She was extraordinarily persistent, intellectually curious and spent decades working professionally with languages.

उनका जीवन दिखाता है कि एक असाधारण वयस्क भाषा सीखने वाली ने क्या हासिल किया।

Her life demonstrates what one remarkable adult learner achieved.

इसका मतलब यह नहीं कि हर कोई उसी मुकाम तक पहुँचेगा।

It doesn't tell us that everyone will reach the same destination.

लेकिन यह उस धारणा को ज़रूर चुनौती देता है कि गंभीरता से भाषा सीखना केवल उन्हीं लोगों के लिए है जिनमें बचपन से ही इसकी स्पष्ट प्रतिभा थी।

What it does challenge is the idea that serious language learning belongs only to people who were obviously gifted at it from childhood.

बेन: खासकर इसलिए क्योंकि उन्होंने इसका बड़ा हिस्सा वयस्क होने के बाद विकसित किया।

Ben: Especially because she started building much of this as an adult.

क्लारा: बिल्कुल।

Clara: Exactly.

और वे दशकों तक सीखती रहीं।

And she continued learning for decades.

शायद उनकी कहानी का यही हिस्सा मुझे सबसे अधिक प्रोत्साहित करता है।

That may be the part of her story I find most encouraging.

उन्होंने भाषा सीखने को कोई ऐसा चरण नहीं माना जिसे पूरा करके छोड़ दिया जाए।

She didn't treat language learning as a phase you complete.

यह जीवन भर उनके काम का हिस्सा बना रहा।

It remained something she did throughout her life.

बेन: अगर कातो लोम्ब हमारे साथ यहाँ बैठी होतीं, तो आपके खयाल से वे ऐसे व्यक्ति से क्या कहतीं जो छह महीने से भाषा सीख रहा है और अपनी बेहद धीमी प्रगति से निराश है?

Ben: If Kató Lomb were sitting here with us, what do you think she'd tell a learner who's been studying for six months and feels hopelessly slow?

क्लारा: ज़ाहिर है, मैं उनकी ओर से नहीं बोल सकती।

Clara: I obviously can't speak for her.

लेकिन उनके लेखन के आधार पर मुझे लगता है कि वे कुछ बहुत व्यावहारिक सवाल पूछतीं।

But based on her writing, I suspect she'd ask some very practical questions.

क्या आप भाषा के साथ पर्याप्त समय बिता रहे हैं?

Are you spending enough time with the language?

क्या आप ऐसी चीज़ों के साथ काम कर रहे हैं जिनमें आपकी सचमुच रुचि है?

Are you working with things that genuinely interest you?

क्या आप खुद से बहुत जल्दी सब कुछ समझ लेने की उम्मीद कर रहे हैं?

Are you expecting yourself to understand everything too soon?

और क्या आप गलतियाँ करने से इतने डरते हैं कि उसी अभ्यास से बच रहे हैं जिसकी आपको ज़रूरत है?

And are you so afraid of making mistakes that you're avoiding the very practice you need?

बेन: यह सवालों की काफ़ी असहज सूची है।

Ben: That's a rather uncomfortable checklist.

क्लारा: उपयोगी सूचियाँ अक्सर ऐसी ही होती हैं।

Clara: The useful ones often are.

बेन: तो धाराप्रवाह बोलने का कोई और इंटरनेट नुस्खा बनाए बिना आप उनके तरीके का सार कैसे बताएँगी?

Ben: So how would you summarize her approach without turning it into another internet recipe for fluency?

क्लारा: जिज्ञासु बने रहिए।

Clara: Stay curious.

भाषा के साथ सचमुच समय बिताइए।

Spend real time with the language.

ऐसी चीज़ें पढ़िए जिन्हें आप वास्तव में समझना चाहते हैं।

Read things you actually want to understand.

संदर्भ का उपयोग कीजिए, लेकिन ज़रूरत पड़ने पर शब्दकोश और व्याख्याओं की मदद भी लीजिए।

Use context, but use dictionaries and explanations when you need them.

नियमित रूप से भाषा की ओर लौटिए।

Return to the language regularly.

खुद को पूरी तरह तैयार महसूस करने का इंतज़ार करने के बजाय भाषा में अभिव्यक्त होने का अभ्यास कीजिए।

Practise producing it instead of waiting until you feel perfect.

और त्रुटिपूर्ण भाषा को बेकार भाषा मत समझिए।

And don't confuse imperfect language with useless language.

बेन: यह “एक अजीब-सी तरकीब से सोलह भाषाएँ सीखने वाला बहुभाषी” से काफ़ी बेहतर है।

Ben: That's considerably better than "polyglot learns sixteen languages with one weird trick."

क्लारा: कहीं बेहतर।

Clara: Much better.

और खुद उस महिला के कहीं अधिक करीब भी।

And much closer to the woman herself.

बेन: क्लारा, अब मैं समझ सकता हूँ कि आप उनकी प्रशंसक क्यों हैं।

Ben: Clara, I can see why you're a fan.

क्लारा: मैंने आपको शुरुआत में ही चेतावनी दी थी।

Clara: I warned you at the beginning.

बेन: कातो लोम्ब एक रसायनशास्त्री, अनुवादक, दुभाषिया और जीवन भर भाषा सीखने वाली महिला थीं। लेकिन शायद उनकी सबसे उपयोगी विरासत कहीं अधिक सरल है।

Ben: Kató Lomb was a chemist, translator, interpreter and lifelong language learner. But perhaps her most useful legacy is much simpler.

भाषाएँ सीखने की शुरुआत प्रतिभा या पूर्णता से होना ज़रूरी नहीं है।

Languages don't have to begin with talent or perfection.

इसकी शुरुआत जिज्ञासा और आगे बढ़ते रहने की इच्छा से हो सकती है।

They can begin with curiosity and the willingness to keep going.

क्लारा: मुझे लगता है कि उन्हें यह बात पसंद आती।

Clara: I think she would have liked that.

बेन: क्लारा, धन्यवाद।

Ben: Clara, thank you.

क्लारा: मुझे खुशी हुई।

Clara: My pleasure.
