The three doctors left the room. The Fairy with Azure Hair went to Pinocchio’s bed. She touched his head. Pinocchio had a very high fever (when the body is too hot because of sickness).
The Fairy put a white powder into a glass of water. She gave it to the puppet. She told him to drink it to get well. Pinocchio looked at the glass. He made a sad face. He asked if the medicine was sweet or bitter.
The Fairy said it was bitter, but it was good for him. Pinocchio said he did not want anything bitter. The Fairy promised to give him a lump of sugar after the medicine. Pinocchio wanted the sugar first.
The Fairy gave him the sugar. Pinocchio ate it quickly. Then the Fairy asked him to drink the medicine. Pinocchio put his nose in the glass. He said it was too bitter. He asked for more sugar.
The Fairy was patient and gave him more sugar. But Pinocchio still refused to drink. He said the pillow on his feet bothered him. The Fairy moved the pillow. Then he said the door was open too far. The Fairy closed the door.
Pinocchio began to cry. He said he would not drink the awful water. The Fairy warned him that he was very sick. She said he might die in a few hours. Pinocchio said he did not care. He said he would rather die than drink bitter medicine.
Suddenly, the door opened. Four black Rabbits entered the room. They carried a small black coffin (a box for a dead person) on their shoulders. Pinocchio was very scared. He asked what they wanted.
The largest Rabbit said they came for Pinocchio. He said Pinocchio would die soon because he refused his medicine. Pinocchio screamed. He grabbed the glass and drank all the medicine at once.
The Rabbits were disappointed. They said they came for nothing. They left the room with the black coffin. Pinocchio felt better immediately. He jumped out of bed and put on his clothes.
The Fairy was happy to see him well. She asked why she had to beg him to drink the medicine. Pinocchio said that all boys hate medicine. The Fairy said that medicine can save lives.
The Fairy asked Pinocchio about the Assassins. Pinocchio told her the whole story. He told her about the Fox, the Cat, and the gold pieces. He told her how the men hanged him from the tree.
The Fairy asked where the gold pieces were now. Pinocchio told a lie. He said he lost them. But the money was really in his pocket. As he spoke, his nose grew two inches longer.
The Fairy asked where he lost the money. Pinocchio said he lost it in the woods. His nose grew even longer. Then Pinocchio said he swallowed the coins with the medicine.
After this third lie, his nose became very long. He could not even turn around in the room. He hit the window and the walls with his nose. The Fairy sat and laughed at him.
Pinocchio asked why she was laughing. She said she was laughing at his lies. She said there are lies with short legs and lies with long noses. Pinocchio’s lies had long noses. Pinocchio was very ashamed. He tried to run away, but his nose was too long to fit through the door.
