Pinocchio cried for hours. His nose was still very long. He could not leave the room. The Fairy let him cry for a while to teach him a lesson. She wanted him to stop telling lies.

Finally, she felt sorry for him. She clapped her hands. One thousand woodpeckers (birds that Peck holes in trees) flew into the room. They pecked at Pinocchio’s long nose. Soon, his nose was small again.

Pinocchio thanked the Fairy. He said he loved her. The Fairy said she loved him too. She said Pinocchio could stay there and be her brother. Pinocchio wanted to stay, but he missed his father.

The Fairy said she already sent for Geppetto. He would arrive before night. Pinocchio was very happy. He wanted to walk down the path to meet his father. The Fairy told him to be careful.

Pinocchio ran through the woods. Near the giant oak tree, he saw the Fox and the Cat. They were very happy to see him. Pinocchio told them about the Assassins.

Pinocchio noticed that the Cat’s paw was wrapped in a cloth. He asked what happened. The Fox said the Cat gave his paw to a hungry wolf. Pinocchio felt sorry for the Cat.

The Fox asked about the gold pieces. Pinocchio said he had four coins in his pocket. The Fox told Pinocchio to come to the Field of Wonders. He said the coins could become two thousand coins.

Pinocchio remembered the Fairy and the Talking Cricket. But he wanted to be rich. He decided to go with the Fox and the Cat. They walked for a long time.

They reached a town called the City of Simple Simons. The streets were full of poor, sad animals. These animals were foolish and gave away everything they owned. Pinocchio did not understand this.

They went to a field outside the city. The Fox told Pinocchio to dig a hole. Pinocchio put his four gold pieces in the hole. He covered them with earth.

The Fox told Pinocchio to water the ground. Pinocchio used his shoe to carry water from a stream. He poured the water over the gold pieces. The Fox said the money would grow into a tree of gold.

The Fox and the Cat said they had to leave. They told Pinocchio to wait twenty minutes. They said he would find many gold coins on the branches of a new tree. Pinocchio thanked them and they walked away.
