Ben: Welcome back to Vocafy Language in Real Life. I'm Ben. And today we're heading to East Asia to explore a language that fascinates a lot of learners—and can look fairly intimidating the first time you see it. Japanese.
My usual co-host Clara is away, so today I'm joined by Sarah. Welcome to the show.
ਸੈਰਾ: ਸਤ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ, ਬੈਨ। ਇੱਥੇ ਆ ਕੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
Sarah: Hi Ben. It's great to be here.
And yes, Japanese can make quite an entrance. If you're used to the Latin alphabet, even a completely ordinary Japanese sentence can look like several writing systems have been mixed together.
Ben: Which, in a way, they have. You've got these complex characters, then curvy symbols, then sharper, more angular ones. Are Japanese learners basically learning three alphabets?
Sarah: Not quite. Japanese normally uses three scripts together, but they have different roles.
The first is Kanji. These characters came historically from Chinese writing, although Japanese has adapted them over many centuries. Kanji are strongly connected with meaning and are often used for important parts of words—things like nouns and the main part of many verbs and adjectives.
ਉਦਾਹਰਨ ਵਜੋਂ, 山 ‘ਯਾਮਾ’, ਯਾਨੀ “ਪਹਾੜ”, ਲਈ ਕਾਂਜੀ ਹੈ।
For example, 山 is the kanji for yama, "mountain."
ਬੈਨ: ਤਾਂ ਇਹੀ ਉਹ ਗੁੰਝਲਦਾਰ ਦਿਸਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਹੈ।
Ben: So that's the complicated-looking part.
Sarah: Usually, yes. And one reason kanji take time to learn is that a character can have more than one reading depending on the word and context.
Then there is Hiragana. Its symbols represent small sound units—roughly the rhythmic beats of Japanese speech. Hiragana does a lot of grammatical work. You'll see it in particles, verb endings and many words that aren't written with kanji.
And finally there's Katakana, which represents the same basic set of sounds but uses a different set of symbols. It's especially common for foreign loanwords, foreign names and certain kinds of emphasis.
ਬੈਨ: ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਤਿੰਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਣਾਲੀਆਂ ਇੱਕ-ਦੂਜੇ ਨਾਲ ਮੁਕਾਬਲਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ। ਇਹ ਕੰਮ ਵੰਡ ਲੈਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
Ben: So the three systems aren't competing with each other. They divide up the work.
ਸੈਰਾ: ਬਿਲਕੁਲ।
Sarah: Exactly.
Take a simple sentence about drinking coffee. The core Japanese words might use kanji, grammatical endings and particles appear in hiragana, and kōhī—coffee—is normally written in katakana.
At first that mixture looks chaotic. Once you know what the different scripts are doing, it starts giving you clues about the sentence.
ਬੈਨ: ਇਹ ਤਾਂ ਹੁਣੇ ਹੀ ਕਾਫ਼ੀ ਘੱਟ ਡਰਾਉਣਾ ਲੱਗਣ ਲੱਗ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ।
Ben: That's already much less frightening.
ਪਰ ਫਿਰ ਵਿਆਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਵਾਰੀ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਜਾਪਾਨੀ ਵਾਕ ਦੇ ਅੰਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਿਰਿਆ ਰੱਖਣ ਲਈ ਮਸ਼ਹੂਰ ਹੈ।
But then we get to grammar. Japanese is famous for putting the verb at the end.
ਸੈਰਾ: ਇਹ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡੇ ਫ਼ਰਕਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਬੋਲਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
Sarah: That's one of the biggest differences English speakers notice.
ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਆਮ ਤੌਰ ’ਤੇ ਕਰਤਾ-ਕਿਰਿਆ-ਕਰਮ ਕ੍ਰਮ ਦੀ ਪਾਲਣਾ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ। “ਮੈਂ ਇੱਕ ਸੇਬ ਖਾਂਦਾ/ਖਾਂਦੀ ਹਾਂ।”
English usually follows Subject-Verb-Object. "I eat an apple."
ਜਾਪਾਨੀ ਨੂੰ ਆਮ ਤੌਰ ’ਤੇ ਕਰਤਾ-ਕਰਮ-ਕਿਰਿਆ ਵਾਲੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਲਈ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਵਾਕ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ:
Japanese is commonly described as Subject-Object-Verb. So you can get
「私はりんごを食べます」
「私はりんごを食べます」
ਵਾਤਾਸ਼ੀ ਵਾ ਰਿੰਗੋ ਓ ਤਾਬੇਮਾਸੁ।
Watashi wa ringo o tabemasu.
ਬਹੁਤ ਮੋਟੇ ਤੌਰ ’ਤੇ, “ਮੇਰੀ ਗੱਲ ਕਰੀਏ ਤਾਂ, ਸੇਬ ਖਾਣਾ।”
Very roughly, "As for me, apple eat."
ਅਹਿਮ ਗੱਲ ਇਹ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਵਾਕ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਖ ਕਿਰਿਆ-ਭਾਗ ਆਮ ਤੌਰ ’ਤੇ ਅੰਤ ਵੱਲ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
The important thing is that the main predicate normally comes toward the end.
Ben: But if Japanese word order is more flexible, how do people know which word is doing what?
ਸੈਰਾ: ਇੱਥੇ ਪਾਰਟੀਕਲ ਬੇਹੱਦ ਲਾਭਦਾਇਕ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
Sarah: This is where particles become incredibly useful.
They're short grammatical markers that come after words or phrases and tell you something about their role.
In our sentence, wa marks watashi—"I"—as the topic. The particle o marks ringo—"apple"—as the object of the verb.
ਤੁਸੀਂ ਪਾਰਟੀਕਲਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਾਕ ਦੇ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਹਿੱਸਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਲੱਗੇ ਛੋਟੇ ਲੇਬਲ ਸਮਝ ਸਕਦੇ ਹੋ।
You can think of particles as little labels attached to parts of the sentence.
Ben: So English relies quite heavily on position. Japanese can rely more on these labels.
Sarah: That's a useful way to think about it, although Japanese word order isn't completely free.
And there's another difference that learners discover quite quickly. Japanese often leaves things out when everybody already knows what they are.
ਜੇ ਸੰਦਰਭ ਤੋਂ ਗੱਲ ਸਪਸ਼ਟ ਹੋਵੇ, ਤਾਂ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਵਾਰ-ਵਾਰ “ਮੈਂ” ਜਾਂ “ਤੁਸੀਂ” ਕਹਿਣ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ।
You don't have to keep saying "I" or "you" if the context makes it obvious.
ਬੈਨ: ਜੋ ਸੁਣਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਤਾਂ ਸੁਵਿਧਾਜਨਕ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆਰਥੀ ਲਈ ਸ਼ਾਇਦ ਮੁਸ਼ਕਲ ਵੀ ਹੋਵੇ।
Ben: Which sounds efficient, but probably dangerous for a beginner.
ਸੈਰਾ: ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਵਿੱਚ, ਹਾਂ। ਸਿੱਖਿਆਰਥੀ ਅਕਸਰ ਕਰਤਾ ਲੱਭਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਸੋਚਦੇ ਹਨ, “ਰੁਕੋ—ਇਹ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਗਿਆ?”
Sarah: At first, yes. Learners often search for the subject and think, "Wait—where did it go?"
But eventually you start noticing that the missing information isn't really missing for the people in the conversation. It's understood from context.
ਬੈਨ: ਇਸ ਨਾਲ ਅਸੀਂ ਬੜੀ ਸਹਿਜਤਾ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਪਾਨੀ ਦੇ ਇੱਕ ਹੋਰ ਮਸ਼ਹੂਰ ਪੱਖ ’ਤੇ ਆ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਾਂ। ਨਿਮਰਤਾ।
Ben: That brings us nicely to another famous part of Japanese. Politeness.
People often hear about Keigo, this complicated system where you have to change the way you speak depending on the person in front of you.
ਅਸਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਹ ਫ਼ਰਕ ਕਿੰਨਾ ਵੱਡਾ ਹੈ?
How dramatic is it really?
ਸੈਰਾ: ਇਹ ਪ੍ਰਣਾਲੀ ਸੱਚਮੁੱਚ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਕਾਫ਼ੀ ਬਾਰੀਕ ਤੇ ਵਿਕਸਿਤ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ।
Sarah: The system is real, and it can become quite sophisticated.
Japanese has ordinary polite speech, respectful forms that elevate another person's actions, and humble forms that lower the speaker's own side in relation to someone else.
ਕਈ ਵਾਰ ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਵਲੀ ਵਰਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਕਈ ਵਾਰ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਵਿਆਕਰਨਕ ਬਣਤਰਾਂ ਵਰਤੀਆਂ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
Sometimes that involves special vocabulary. Sometimes it involves grammatical patterns.
So yes, the Japanese you use with a close friend can be noticeably different from the Japanese used with a customer, senior colleague or someone you're meeting formally.
ਬੈਨ: ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਸਿਰਫ਼ “ਸਰ” ਵਰਗਾ ਕੋਈ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਜੋੜਨ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਕਿਤੇ ਵੱਧ ਹੈ।
Ben: So much more than adding the equivalent of "sir."
ਸੈਰਾ: ਬਿਲਕੁਲ।
Sarah: Definitely.
But I wouldn't want beginners to imagine that every conversation is a social minefield.
You can communicate a lot with basic polite Japanese long before you master formal keigo. Even native speakers learn some of the more formal conventions as they enter professional life.
And context matters. Age, familiarity, professional role, the situation and whether someone is considered part of your own group can all affect the language people choose.
ਬੈਨ: ਇਹ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਇਹ ਕਹਿਣ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਕਿਤੇ ਵੱਧ ਦਿਲਚਸਪ ਹੈ ਕਿ “ਜਾਪਾਨੀ ਲੋਕ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਨਿਮਰ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ।”
Ben: That's much more interesting than simply saying, "Japanese people are extremely polite."
Sarah: Exactly. Politeness exists in every language. Japanese simply grammaticalises and conventionalises some social distinctions in particularly visible ways.
ਬੈਨ: ਹੁਣ ਆਓ ਇੱਕ ਹੋਰ ਗੱਲ ਸਪਸ਼ਟ ਕਰੀਏ।
Ben: Now let's clear up something else.
Japanese uses Chinese characters, so people naturally assume Japanese and Chinese must be closely related languages.
ਕੀ ਇਹ ਸੱਚ ਹੈ?
Are they?
ਸੈਰਾ: ਨਹੀਂ। ਘੱਟੋ-ਘੱਟ ਇੱਕੋ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ-ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਬੰਧਿਤ ਹੋਣ ਦੇ ਅਰਥ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਹੀਂ।
Sarah: No. Not in the sense of belonging to the same language family.
Japanese belongs to the Japonic language family, which also includes the Ryukyuan languages. Chinese belongs to the Sino-Tibetan family.
ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਬੁਨਿਆਦੀ ਬਣਤਰਾਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਵੱਖਰੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
Their basic structures are very different.
ਪਰ ਇਹ ਕਹਿਣਾ ਕਿ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਨਾਤਾ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਲਿਖਤ ਤੱਕ ਹੀ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਵੀ ਗੁੰਮਰਾਹ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ।
But saying that the connection ends with writing would also be misleading.
ਬੈਨ: ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਚੀਨ ਦਾ ਜਾਪਾਨੀ ਉੱਤੇ ਅਸਰ ਕਿਤੇ ਵੱਧ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਸੀ?
Ben: Because China influenced Japanese much more broadly?
ਸੈਰਾ: ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਵੱਧ।
Sarah: Very much so.
Japanese adopted Chinese characters and also borrowed a huge amount of vocabulary from Chinese over centuries. So modern Japanese contains a large layer of Sino-Japanese words.
It's a little like the enormous influence Latin and French had on English vocabulary—except that in Japan the history of writing makes the connection even more visible.
So Japanese and Chinese aren't close genetic relatives, but they have an extremely important history of cultural and linguistic contact.
ਬੈਨ: ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਸੁਣਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੀ ਬਹੁਤ ਵੱਖਰੀਆਂ ਲੱਗਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
Ben: And they sound very different too.
Chinese languages are famous for tone. Japanese isn't a tonal language in quite the same way, right?
ਸੈਰਾ: ਹਾਂ, ਪਰ ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਅਹਿਮ ਬਾਰੀਕੀ ਹੈ।
Sarah: Right, although there's an important detail.
In languages such as Mandarin Chinese, different tone patterns can distinguish many words. Standard Tokyo Japanese instead has what's usually called a pitch-accent system.
ਸੁਰ ਦੀ ਉਚਾਈ ਫਿਰ ਵੀ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਵਿਚਕਾਰ ਫ਼ਰਕ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਇਹ ਪ੍ਰਣਾਲੀ ਵੱਖਰੇ ਢੰਗ ਨਾਲ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ।
Pitch can still distinguish words, but the system works differently.
For a beginner, though, Japanese pronunciation has some friendly features. It has a relatively small vowel system, and once you've learned kana, the relationship between writing and basic pronunciation is much more regular than English spelling.
ਬੈਨ: ਤਾਂ ਕੀ ਜਾਪਾਨੀ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਆਸਾਨ ਹੈ?
Sarah: I'd say the basics are approachable rather than simply "easy."
Learners still have to get used to things like long and short sounds, doubled consonants, rhythm and pitch accent. Those differences can matter.
But compared with the writing system, learners often find that they can start producing understandable Japanese sounds relatively early.
ਬੈਨ: ਅਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਜਾਪਾਨ ਵੀ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਦੇ ਬੇਹਿਸਾਬ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਉਧਾਰ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਮਾਨੋ ਇਹ ਅਹਿਸਾਨ ਮੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ।
Ben: And then Japan seems to return the favour by borrowing enormous numbers of English words.
ਸੈਰਾ: ਹਾਂ, ਬਿਲਕੁਲ।
Sarah: It does.
Modern Japanese has borrowed heavily from English, and these words usually appear in katakana.
ਪਰ ਇਹ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਉਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਰਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਬੋਲਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਉਮੀਦ ਕਰੇਗਾ।
But they don't always behave exactly as an English speaker expects.
ਉਧਾਰ ਲਿਆ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਆਪਣਾ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਬਦਲ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਛੋਟਾ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਾਂ ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਨਵਾਂ ਅਰਥ ਵੀ ਵਿਕਸਿਤ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।
A borrowed word can change its pronunciation, become shorter or even develop a new meaning.
Take manshon, from English "mansion." In Japanese it normally refers to a type of apartment or condominium building—not a giant luxury house.
ਬੈਨ: ਇਸ ਨਾਲ ਘਰ ਵੇਖਣ ਜਾਣ ’ਤੇ ਕਾਫ਼ੀ ਨਿਰਾਸ਼ਾ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ।
Ben: That could lead to a fairly disappointing property viewing.
ਸੈਰਾ: ਜਾਂ ਫਿਰ ਹੈਰਾਨੀਜਨਕ ਤੌਰ ’ਤੇ ਘੱਟ ਕੀਮਤ ਵਾਲੀ “ਮੈਨਸ਼ਨ” ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ।
Sarah: Or a surprisingly affordable mansion.
And then there's wasei-eigo, literally "Japanese-made English." These are expressions created in Japan from English-looking material.
A classic example is salaryman, referring to a salaried company employee, traditionally especially a male white-collar worker.
ਇਹ ਸੁਣਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਮ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਰਗਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਇਹ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਇੱਕ ਜਾਪਾਨੀ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਾਵੇ ਵਜੋਂ ਵਿਕਸਿਤ ਹੋਇਆ।
It sounds as though it should be ordinary English, but the word developed as a Japanese expression.
Ben: So even when Japanese borrows, it doesn't necessarily leave the word untouched.
Sarah: Exactly. Borrowing doesn't mean copying. Languages reshape things to fit their own sound system, grammar and culture.
Ben: There's another part of Japanese vocabulary that always seems incredibly expressive. All those words that sound like what they're describing.
ਸੈਰਾ: ਜਾਪਾਨੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਨੁਕਰਣਾਤਮਕ ਜਾਂ ਧੁਨੀ-ਪ੍ਰਤੀਕਾਤਮਕ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਦਾ ਬੇਹੱਦ ਸਮ੍ਰਿੱਧ ਸਮੂਹ ਹੈ।
Sarah: Japanese has a remarkably rich group of mimetic, or sound-symbolic, words.
Some really are what English speakers would call onomatopoeia.
ਉਦਾਹਰਨ ਵਜੋਂ, ਜ਼ਾ-ਜ਼ਾ ਮੋਹਲੇਧਾਰ ਮੀਂਹ ਦੀ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਨੂੰ ਦਰਸਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।
For example, zaa-zaa can describe the sound of heavy rain.
ਪਰ ਜਾਪਾਨੀ ਧੁਨੀ-ਪ੍ਰਤੀਕਵਾਦ ਅਸਲ ਆਵਾਜ਼ਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਕਿਤੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
But Japanese sound symbolism goes much further than actual noises.
ਕਿਰਾ-ਕਿਰਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਚਮਕਦੀ ਜਾਂ ਝਿਲਮਿਲਾਉਂਦੀ ਚੀਜ਼ ਨੂੰ ਦਰਸਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।
Kira-kira can describe something glittering or sparkling.
And waku-waku describes that excited, expectant feeling when you're looking forward to something.
ਬੈਨ: ਤਾਂ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਧੁਨੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਅਜਿਹੀਆਂ ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ ਦੀ ਨਕਲ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ ਜੋ ਅਸਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੋਈ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ।
Ben: So you're imitating things that don't actually make a sound.
ਸੈਰਾ: ਬਿਲਕੁਲ।
Sarah: Exactly.
ਹਿਲਜੁਲ, ਬਣਾਵਟ, ਦਿੱਖ, ਸਰੀਰਕ ਅਹਿਸਾਸਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਭਾਵਨਾਵਾਂ ਲਈ ਵੀ ਅਨੁਕਰਣਾਤਮਕ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਹਨ।
There are mimetic words for movement, texture, appearance, physical sensations and emotions.
That's part of what makes them so memorable. The sound of the word often feels connected to the experience it's describing.
ਬੈਨ: ਹੁਣ ਅਖ਼ੀਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਸੀਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਿਰਲੇਖ ਵਾਲੇ ਵਾਕੰਸ਼, 「空気を読む」—ਕੂਕੀ ਓ ਯੋਮੁ—’ਤੇ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਾਂ।
Ben: Now we finally come to the phrase in our title, 「空気を読む」—kūki o yomu.
ਸ਼ਾਬਦਿਕ ਅਰਥ ਹੈ, “ਹਵਾ ਨੂੰ ਪੜ੍ਹਨਾ।”
Literally, "read the air."
ਅਸਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਭਾਵ ਕੀ ਹੈ?
What does that actually mean?
ਸੈਰਾ: ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਅਕਸਰ “ਰੀਡ ਦ ਰੂਮ” ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ—ਯਾਨੀ “ਮਾਹੌਲ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਂਪਣਾ।”
Sarah: A natural English equivalent would often be "read the room."
It means noticing the mood, the relationships between people and the things that aren't being stated directly—and adjusting your behaviour accordingly.
Imagine you're in a meeting. Nobody explicitly says that an idea should be dropped, but you can sense from the reactions around the table that continuing to push it would be awkward.
ਇਹੀ ਹਵਾ ਨੂੰ ਪੜ੍ਹਨਾ ਹੈ।
You've read the air.
ਬੈਨ: ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਅਕਸਰ ਇਸ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਜੋੜਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜਾਪਾਨੀ ਇੱਕ “ਵੱਧ ਸੰਦਰਭ-ਨਿਰਭਰ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ” ਹੈ।
Ben: And this is often connected to the idea that Japanese is a "high-context language."
ਸੈਰਾ: ਹਾਂ, ਹਾਲਾਂਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਇਹ ਵਾਕੰਸ਼ ਥੋੜ੍ਹੀ ਸਾਵਧਾਨੀ ਨਾਲ ਵਰਤਾਂਗੀ।
Sarah: Yes, although I'd be careful with that phrase.
You sometimes hear Japanese culture described as "high-context," meaning that people rely relatively heavily on shared circumstances and implicit information.
That can be a useful starting point, but it isn't a law of Japanese grammar, and it certainly doesn't mean every Japanese person communicates indirectly.
ਅਸੀਂ ਇਹ ਜ਼ਰੂਰ ਕਹਿ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਜਾਪਾਨੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੰਦਰਭ ਸੱਚਮੁੱਚ ਬਹੁਤ ਮਹੱਤਵ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ।
What we can say is that context really does matter in Japanese.
Subjects and objects are often omitted when they're obvious. The appropriate level of politeness depends on the relationship and situation. And expressions like kūki o yomu show that attention to unspoken social information is culturally familiar and important.
Ben: So learning Japanese isn't about discovering that Japanese people somehow communicate telepathically.
ਸੈਰਾ: ਬਦਕਿਸਮਤੀ ਨਾਲ, ਨਹੀਂ। ਨਹੀਂ ਤਾਂ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਸਿੱਖਣਾ ਕਿਤੇ ਤੇਜ਼ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ।
Sarah: Unfortunately not. That would make language learning much quicker.
ਪਰ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਹੌਲੀ-ਹੌਲੀ ਉਸ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਨਾਲ ਵਧੇਰੇ ਸਹਿਜ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹੋ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਦੁਹਰਾਉਣ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ।
But you do gradually become more comfortable with information that doesn't need to be repeated.
ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਿੱਖਿਆਰਥੀ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਹਰ ਵਾਕ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਫ਼-ਸਾਫ਼ ਦੱਸੇ ਕਿ ਕਿਸ ਨੇ ਕਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਕੀ ਕੀਤਾ।
At first, a learner wants every sentence to tell them exactly who did what to whom.
Later, you start asking a different question. "Given everything that's happening here, what would naturally be understood?"
ਅਤੇ ਸੋਚ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਹ ਬਦਲਾਅ ਬਹੁਤ ਲਾਭਦਾਇਕ ਹੈ।
And that's a useful shift.
ਬੈਨ: ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਪਸੰਦ ਆਈ।
Ben: I like that.
So Japanese begins with what looks like a wall of unfamiliar symbols. But once we look closer, the scripts have different jobs. Particles help organise the sentence. The verb tends to anchor the end. Politeness reflects relationships and situations. And context helps speakers avoid saying things that everyone already understands.
ਸੈਰਾ: ਬਿਲਕੁਲ।
Sarah: Exactly.
Japanese is difficult in some very real ways. Learning kanji takes time. Grammar asks English speakers to build sentences differently. Formal language can become complicated.
ਪਰ ਅਣਜਾਣ ਹੋਣ ਦਾ ਮਤਲਬ ਤਰਕਹੀਣ ਹੋਣਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
But unfamiliar doesn't mean illogical.
Once you start seeing the patterns, that intimidating page becomes a system you can gradually learn to read.
ਅਤੇ ਅਖ਼ੀਰ ਵਿੱਚ, ਸ਼ਾਇਦ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਆਲੇ-ਦੁਆਲੇ ਦੀ ਹਵਾ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਥੋੜ੍ਹਾ ਪੜ੍ਹਨ ਲੱਗ ਪਵੋ।
And eventually, perhaps, you start reading a little of the air around it too.
ਬੈਨ: ਸਮਾਪਤ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਵਧੀਆ ਥਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ।
Ben: That's a perfect place to finish.
ਸੈਰਾ, ਸਾਡੇ ਨਾਲ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਹੋਣ ਲਈ ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਧੰਨਵਾਦ।
Sarah, thank you for joining us.
ਸੈਰਾ: ਮੈਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੋਈ, ਬੈਨ।
Sarah: It was my pleasure, Ben.
Ben: And thanks to everyone listening. We'll see you next time on Vocafy Language in Real Life.
