Ben: Welcome back to Vocafy Unpacked. I'm Ben, and I'm here with Clara. Today we're going back almost a century to meet someone whose approach to language learning can sound surprisingly modern.

Clara: Hi Ben. And I should probably admit from the beginning that I have a soft spot for this one. Kató Lomb is one of the language learners I admire most.

ਬੈਨ: ਇਹ ਤਾਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਜ਼ੋਰਦਾਰ ਸਿਫ਼ਾਰਸ਼ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਕੌਣ ਸਨ?

Ben: That's a strong recommendation. Who was she?

Clara: She was Hungarian, born in 1909, and her original academic world wasn't languages at all. She studied physics and chemistry and earned a doctorate in chemistry.

She later became a translator and one of the early simultaneous interpreters. At the height of her career, she worked professionally with 16 languages.

ਬੈਨ: ਸੋਲਾਂ ਭਾਸ਼ਾਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ ਲਗਭਗ ਅਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸਯੋਗ ਲੱਗਦੀ ਹੈ।

Ben: Sixteen sounds almost unbelievable.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਲੱਗਦੀ ਤਾਂ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਲੋਮਬ ਖ਼ੁਦ ਇਸ ਗਿਣਤੀ ਬਾਰੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਵਧਾਨ ਸਨ।

Clara: It does, but Lomb herself was careful about that number.

ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਖੁੱਲ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ 16 ਭਾਸ਼ਾਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕੋ ਪੱਧਰ ’ਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਸਨ।

She openly said that she did not know all 16 languages at the same level.

There were languages such as Hungarian, Russian, English, French and German that she could use very freely. With some others she could translate or interpret after preparation. And there were languages she mainly worked with through written texts.

Ben: I already like that answer more than the usual polyglot story where somebody supposedly speaks thirty languages perfectly.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਬਿਲਕੁਲ।

Clara: Exactly.

ਉਹ ਭਾਸ਼ਾਵਾਂ ਸਿੱਖਣ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਜਾਦੂਈ ਕਾਰਨਾਮਾ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਦਿਲਚਸਪੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਸਨ।

She wasn't interested in turning language learning into magic.

In fact, one of the recurring themes in her writing was almost the opposite. She wanted to remove some of the mystery surrounding the idea of being naturally gifted at languages.

ਬੈਨ: ਕੀ ਉਹ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਸਨ ਜੋ ਬਚਪਨ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਬਹੁਤ ਸ਼ਾਨਦਾਰ ਢੰਗ ਨਾਲ ਭਾਸ਼ਾਵਾਂ ਸਿੱਖਦੇ ਆ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ?

Ben: Was she one of those people who had been learning languages brilliantly since childhood?

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਨਹੀਂ, ਅਤੇ ਇਹੀ ਇੱਕ ਕਾਰਨ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਇੰਨੀ ਦਿਲਚਸਪ ਹੈ।

Clara: No, and that's one reason her story is so interesting.

She had learned some languages at school, but she didn't describe herself as a remarkable language student.

Her serious independent language-learning journey really began as an adult.

In 1933 she wanted to improve her employment prospects, so she began teaching herself English.

ਬੈਨ: ਕਿਵੇਂ?

Ben: How?

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਇੱਕ ਨਾਵਲ ਨਾਲ।

Clara: With a novel.

ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਸਿੱਖਣ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਲਈ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਤੌਰ ’ਤੇ ਸਰਲ ਬਣਾਈ ਗਈ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ।

And not a specially simplified learner book.

ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਜੌਨ ਗਾਲਜ਼ਵਰਦੀ ਦੇ ਇੱਕ ਨਾਵਲ ਨਾਲ ਬਹੁਤ ਡੂੰਘਾਈ ਨਾਲ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਨਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕੀਤਾ।

She began working intensively with a novel by John Galsworthy.

At first she understood very little. She later wrote that after a week she was beginning to sense her way through the text, after about a month she could understand it, and after two months she was enjoying it.

Ben: That sounds either inspiring or terrifying, depending on what page you're currently stuck on.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਸ਼ਾਇਦ ਦੋਵੇਂ ਹੀ।

Clara: Probably both.

ਪਰ ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਲੋਮਬ ਬਾਰੇ ਇੱਕ ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਨ ਗੱਲ ਪਤਾ ਲੱਗਦੀ ਹੈ।

But this tells us something important about Lomb.

ਉਹ ਅਧੂਰੀ ਸਮਝ ਨੂੰ ਸਵੀਕਾਰ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਤਿਆਰ ਸਨ।

She was willing to tolerate partial understanding.

She didn't think you had to know every word before a text became useful.

ਬੈਨ: ਇਹ ਉਸ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਤੋਂ ਕਾਫ਼ੀ ਵੱਖਰਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਡੇ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਕਈਆਂ ਨੇ ਸਕੂਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਭਾਸ਼ਾਵਾਂ ਸਿੱਖੀਆਂ ਸਨ।

Ben: That's quite different from how many of us learned languages at school.

You read a paragraph, stop at every unknown word, look it up, write it down, and by the time you reach the end you've forgotten what the paragraph was about.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਬਿਲਕੁਲ।

Clara: Exactly.

ਲੋਮਬ ਸ਼ਬਦਕੋਸ਼ ਵਰਤਦੇ ਸਨ। ਉਹ ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਵੀ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਿਰੁੱਧ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਨ।

Lomb used dictionaries. She wasn't against them at all.

ਪਰ ਉਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੇ ਸਨ ਕਿ ਸ਼ਬਦਕੋਸ਼ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੜ੍ਹਨ ਨੂੰ ਕਾਬੂ ਕਰੇ।

But she didn't want the dictionary to control the reading.

When reading a new book, she often tried first to work out meaning from the context. She would record useful words together with sentences rather than as isolated items. Only on later readings would she look up more of what she still didn't understand.

ਬੈਨ: ਤਾਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਵਲੀ ਦਾ ਪੂਰਾ ਗਿਆਨ ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿੱਚ।

Ben: So the story came first and complete vocabulary knowledge came later.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਹਿਣਾ ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਠੀਕ ਹੈ।

Clara: That's a fair way to describe it.

ਅਤੇ ਕੀ ਪੜ੍ਹਨਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਦੀ ਚੋਣ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਲਈ ਬੇਹੱਦ ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਨ ਸੀ।

And the choice of what to read mattered enormously to her.

One of her simplest recommendations was to choose something that genuinely interests you.

ਕੋਈ ਜਾਸੂਸੀ ਕਹਾਣੀ, ਤਕਨੀਕੀ ਪਾਠ, ਰਸਾਲਾ—ਜੋ ਵੀ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਅੱਗੇ ਪੜ੍ਹਦੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਲਈ ਖਿੱਚੇ।

A detective story, a technical text, a magazine, whatever pulls you forward.

ਬੈਨ: ਇਹ ਤਾਂ ਲਗਭਗ ਸਪੱਸ਼ਟ ਜਿਹੀ ਗੱਲ ਲੱਗਦੀ ਹੈ।

Ben: That sounds almost obvious.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਹੁਣ ਤਾਂ ਲੱਗਦੀ ਹੈ।

Clara: It does now.

ਪਰ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਇੱਕ ਵਿਹਾਰਕ ਸੂਝ ਹੈ।

But there's a practical insight underneath it.

A difficult foreign-language text creates friction. If you don't care what happens on the next page, it's very easy to stop.

ਜਦੋਂ ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਸਮਝ ਅਧੂਰੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਦੋਂ ਵੀ ਉਤਸੁਕਤਾ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਅੱਗੇ ਵਧਦੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਦਾ ਕਾਰਨ ਦਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।

Curiosity gives you a reason to keep going even when your understanding is incomplete.

Lomb wrote very directly about this. Interest, in her view, was one of the forces that helped learners through those moments when the language itself became frustrating.

ਬੈਨ: ਅਤੇ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਇਕੱਲੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਜੋ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਸਿੱਖੀ।

Ben: And English wasn't the only language she learned that way.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਨਹੀਂ।

Clara: Far from it.

ਰੂਸੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਹੋਰ ਸ਼ਾਨਦਾਰ ਉਦਾਹਰਨ ਦਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।

Russian gives us another great example.

1941 ਵਿੱਚ ਲੋਮਬ ਨੇ ਰੂਸੀ ਸਿੱਖਣ ਦਾ ਫ਼ੈਸਲਾ ਕੀਤਾ।

In 1941, Lomb decided to learn Russian.

She found an old two-volume Russian-English dictionary in a secondhand bookshop. It had been published in 1860 and was apparently in pretty terrible condition.

ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਖਰੀਦਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਕੰਮ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ।

She bought it and started working.

ਬੈਨ: ਕੀ 1941 ਵਿੱਚ ਹੰਗਰੀ ਅੰਦਰ ਰੂਸੀ ਸਿੱਖਣਾ ਰਾਜਨੀਤਿਕ ਪੱਖੋਂ ਕਾਫ਼ੀ ਮੁਸ਼ਕਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ?

Ben: Wasn't learning Russian in Hungary in 1941 politically rather awkward?

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਬਹੁਤ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ।

Clara: Very much so.

Hungary was moving deeper into the Axis camp, so openly studying Russian could attract unwanted attention.

Lomb had already developed a way of learning through texts, which became useful because formal opportunities were limited.

She tried classic Russian literature but initially found it too difficult. Then she found a much easier novel and worked through that instead.

ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿੱਚ, ਜੰਗ ਦੌਰਾਨ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਬੇਹੱਦ ਮੁਸ਼ਕਲ ਹਾਲਾਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੀ ਰੂਸੀ ਪੜ੍ਹਨਾ ਜਾਰੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ।

Later, during the war, she continued reading Russian even under extremely difficult circumstances.

ਬੈਨ: ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਕੋਈ ਧਿਆਨ ਨਾਲ ਤਿਆਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਕੋਰਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ।

Ben: So this wasn't a carefully designed language course.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ।

Clara: Not remotely.

ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਹੋਰ ਮੁੱਖ ਵਿਸ਼ਾ ਹੈ।

And that's another theme in her life.

ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਵੀ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦਾ ਸੀ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਉਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਵਰਤਿਆ।

She used what she could find.

ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ, ਸ਼ਬਦਕੋਸ਼, ਰੇਡੀਓ, ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰ, ਗੱਲਬਾਤਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਤਕਨੀਕੀ ਦਸਤਾਵੇਜ਼।

Books, dictionaries, radio, newspapers, conversations, technical documents.

She once described a foreign language as something like a castle that should be attacked from every direction.

ਬੈਨ: ਇਹ ਤਾਂ ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਲੋਮਬ ਵਾਲੀ ਗੱਲ ਹੈ।

Ben: That's very Lomb.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਬਿਲਕੁਲ।

Clara: Very much so.

And it matters because her philosophy wasn't simply "read novels and ignore everything else."

She also listened to radio, used dictionaries, sought teachers and native speakers, studied patterns, translated texts and deliberately practised speaking.

ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਤਰੀਕਾ ਬਹੁਪੱਖੀ ਸੀ।

Her approach was broad.

ਬੈਨ: ਵਿਆਕਰਨ ਬਾਰੇ ਕੀ?

Ben: What about grammar?

The usual retelling of her story is that she basically ignored grammar and learned everything naturally from context.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਬਹੁਤ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਸਰਲ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਗਈ ਹੈ।

Clara: That's too simple.

She disliked the idea that language learning should begin and end with memorising vocabulary lists and digesting grammar rules.

She preferred discovering patterns through the language itself and then using grammar to help make sense of what she was seeing.

ਇਸ ਲਈ ਉਹ ਇਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਹਿ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ ਕਿ ਵਿਆਕਰਨ ਬੇਕਾਰ ਹੈ।

So she wasn't saying that grammar is useless.

ਉਹ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਮਹੱਤਤਾ ਦਾ ਕ੍ਰਮ ਬਦਲ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ।

She was changing the order of importance.

ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ, ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਲਈ ਵਿਸ਼ਲੇਸ਼ਣ।

Language first, analysis in support of it.

ਬੈਨ: ਇਹ ਇੱਕ ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਨ ਫ਼ਰਕ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ।

Ben: That feels like an important distinction.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਇਹ ਹੈ ਵੀ।

Clara: It is.

We should also remember that Lomb was describing what worked for her over many years.

ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਨਿਯੰਤਰਿਤ ਵਿਗਿਆਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਯੋਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ।

Her books aren't controlled scientific experiments.

Some of her ideas fit comfortably with things language teachers and researchers discuss today. Others are simply the observations of an exceptionally experienced learner.

ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦਿਲਚਸਪ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਗੱਲ ਇਹ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਲਗਾਤਾਰ ਵਿਹਾਰਕ ਸਵਾਲ ਪੁੱਛਦੇ ਰਹੇ।

What makes her fascinating is that she kept asking practical questions.

ਮੇਰੀ ਦਿਲਚਸਪੀ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਬਣੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ?

What keeps me interested?

ਮੈਨੂੰ ਬੋਲਣ ਤੋਂ ਡਰ ਕਿਸ ਗੱਲ ਕਰਕੇ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ?

What makes me afraid to speak?

ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਬਣਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ?

How can I fit this language into my life?

ਕਿਸੇ ਵਿਆਖਿਆ ਵੱਲ ਜਾਣ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਸੰਦਰਭ ਤੋਂ ਕੀ ਸਿੱਖ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ?

What can I learn from context before reaching for an explanation?

ਬੈਨ: ਅਤੇ ਹੁਣ ਗੱਲ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਸ਼ਹੂਰ ਸਮੀਕਰਨ ਤੱਕ ਆ ਪਹੁੰਚਦੀ ਹੈ।

Ben: Which brings us to her famous equation.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਹਾਂ।

Clara: Yes.

Lomb eventually expressed her view of language-learning success with a deliberately simple formula.

ਲਗਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ ਸਮਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਣਾ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਝਿਜਕ ਨਾਲ ਭਾਗ ਦੇਣ ’ਤੇ ਨਤੀਜਾ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।

Invested time plus motivation, divided by inhibition, gives the result.

ਬੈਨ: ਇਹ ਤਾਂ ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਕਿਸੇ ਰਸਾਇਣ ਵਿਗਿਆਨੀ ਵਾਲਾ ਕੰਮ ਹੈ।

Ben: That's a very chemist-like thing to do.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਹੈ ਤਾਂ।

Clara: It is.

And she knew perfectly well that human learning couldn't literally be reduced to an equation.

ਅਸਲ ਗੱਲ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਤੱਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਆਪਸੀ ਸੰਬੰਧ ਦੀ ਸੀ।

The point was the relationship between those factors.

ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਨਾਲ ਹੋਰ ਅਰਥਪੂਰਨ ਸਮਾਂ ਬਿਤਾਓ।

Spend more meaningful time with the language.

ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੱਖਣ ਲਈ ਆਪਣੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਨੂੰ ਹੋਰ ਮਜ਼ਬੂਤ ਬਣਾਓ।

Have a stronger reason to learn it.

ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਝਿਜਕ ਨੂੰ ਘਟਾਓ ਜੋ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਅਸਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਰਤਣ ਤੋਂ ਰੋਕਦੀ ਹੈ।

And reduce the inhibition that stops you from actually using it.

ਬੈਨ: ਝਿਜਕ ਤੋਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਅਸਲ ਮਤਲਬ ਕੀ ਸੀ?

Ben: What exactly did she mean by inhibition?

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਇਸ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਨ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਗਲਤੀਆਂ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਸੀ।

Clara: One important part was fear of making mistakes.

ਤੁਸੀਂ ਇਸ ਅਹਿਸਾਸ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਹੋ।

You know the feeling.

You know roughly what you want to say, but you're not sure the sentence is correct, so you say nothing.

ਲੋਮਬ ਲਈ ਇਹ ਝਿਜਕ ਇੱਕ ਗੰਭੀਰ ਰੁਕਾਵਟ ਬਣ ਸਕਦੀ ਸੀ।

For Lomb, that hesitation could become a serious obstacle.

ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਮੰਨਣਾ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਅਧੂਰੇ ਢੰਗ ਨਾਲ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੰਚਾਰ ਵੀ ਕੀਮਤੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

She believed that imperfect communication still had value.

ਬੈਨ: ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਸ਼ਹੂਰ ਗੱਲ ਇੱਥੋਂ ਹੀ ਆਈ ਹੈ।

Ben: That's where her famous line comes from.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਹਾਂ।

Clara: Yes.

ਉਹ ਅਕਸਰ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਸਨ ਕਿ ਭਾਸ਼ਾਵਾਂ ਹੀ ਇੱਕ ਅਜਿਹੀ ਚੀਜ਼ ਹਨ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਅਧੂਰਾ ਗਿਆਨ ਹੋਣਾ ਵੀ ਲਾਭਦਾਇਕ ਹੈ।

She liked to say that languages were the only thing worth knowing even poorly.

ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਵਾਕ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਦਾ ਵਿਚਾਰ, ਵਾਕ ਖ਼ੁਦ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਵੀ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਦਿਲਚਸਪ ਹੈ।

And the idea behind that line is more interesting than the quote itself.

If your Italian is imperfect but it helps you ask which train goes to Milan, the language has already done something useful.

ਵਿਆਕਰਨ ਪੱਖੋਂ ਅਧੂਰਾ ਵਾਕ ਵੀ ਦੋ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜੋੜ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।

A grammatically imperfect sentence can still connect two people.

ਬੈਨ: ਪਰ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਮਤਲਬ ਇਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਿ ਗਲਤੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਮਹੱਤਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ।

Ben: Which doesn't mean mistakes don't matter.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਬਿਲਕੁਲ।

Clara: Exactly.

Lomb wanted corrections. She valued teachers and speakers who could correct her.

ਮਕਸਦ ਗਲਤੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਜਸ਼ਨ ਮਨਾਉਣਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ।

The point wasn't to celebrate mistakes.

ਮਕਸਦ ਇਹ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਗਲਤੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਸੰਚਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਨਾ ਰੋਕੇ।

It was not to let the fear of them prevent communication.

ਇਹ ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਵੱਖਰੀ ਗੱਲ ਹੈ।

That's a very different idea.

ਬੈਨ: ਤਾਂ ਆਤਮ-ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸ ਦਾ ਮਤਲਬ ਇਹ ਦਿਖਾਵਾ ਕਰਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਸਹੀ ਹੋ।

Ben: So confidence wasn't pretending you were correct.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਸਹੀ ਕਿਹਾ।

Clara: Right.

ਇਸ ਦਾ ਮਤਲਬ ਸੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕਰਨ, ਆਪਣੀ ਗਲਤੀ ਜਾਣਨ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਧਾਰਨ ਅਤੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਵਧਦੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਲਈ ਤਿਆਰ ਹੋਣਾ।

It was being willing to try, discover that you were wrong, adjust, and continue.

Ben: You mentioned motivation in the equation too. Did she mean the kind of motivation where you make yourself study every night because you've bought an expensive course?

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ।

Clara: Not quite.

ਲੋਮਬ ਲਈ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਣਾ ਅਕਸਰ ਬਹੁਤ ਠੋਸ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਸੀ।

For Lomb, motivation was often very concrete.

ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਕੁਝ ਹੱਦ ਤੱਕ ਇਸ ਲਈ ਸਿੱਖੀ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕੰਮ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਸੀ।

She learned English partly because she needed work.

She began Japanese because she had taken on the rather ambitious task of translating a Japanese chemical patent at a time when finding a Japanese teacher or textbook in Hungary was extremely difficult.

ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਉਤਸੁਕਤਾ ਵੀ ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਨ ਸੀ।

Her curiosity mattered too.

ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੱਚਮੁੱਚ ਕਿਸੇ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦੀ ਬੁਝਾਰਤ ਸੁਲਝਾਉਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਨੰਦ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਸੀ।

She genuinely enjoyed solving the puzzle of a language.

ਬੈਨ: ਤਾਂ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਣਾ ਦਾ ਮਤਲਬ ਲਾਜ਼ਮੀ ਤੌਰ ’ਤੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਭਰ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਵੱਡਾ ਸੁਪਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ।

Ben: So motivation wasn't necessarily some grand lifelong dream.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਬਿਲਕੁਲ।

Clara: Exactly.

It could be professional necessity, curiosity, a book you wanted to understand, a person you wanted to speak with, or simply the pleasure of figuring something out.

And she tried to connect language learning with the rest of life rather than making it a completely separate duty.

ਬੈਨ: ਇਸ ਨਾਲ ਅਸੀਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜੀ ਇੱਕ ਹੋਰ ਸਲਾਹ ਤੱਕ ਪਹੁੰਚਦੇ ਹਾਂ—ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਪਰਕ।

Ben: Which leads into another piece of advice associated with her. Daily contact.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਹਾਂ।

Clara: Yes.

ਲੋਮਬ ਦੀਆਂ ਵਿਹਾਰਕ ਸਲਾਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਕੁਝ ਸਮਾਂ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਨਾਲ ਬਿਤਾਇਆ ਜਾਵੇ।

One of Lomb's practical suggestions was to spend some time with the language every day.

If time was short, she suggested at least trying a ten-minute monologue.

ਇਹ ਦਾਅਵਾ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਵੱਖਰੀ ਗੱਲ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਦਸ ਮਿੰਟ ਵਿਗਿਆਨਕ ਤੌਰ ’ਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਸੰਪੂਰਨ ਮਾਤਰਾ ਹੈ।

That's quite different from claiming that ten minutes is some scientifically perfect dose.

ਬੈਨ: ਤਾਂ ਕੋਈ ਜਾਦੂਈ ਟਾਈਮਰ ਨਹੀਂ।

Ben: So no magical timer.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਨਹੀਂ।

Clara: No.

ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਵੱਡੀ ਗੱਲ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਤਾ ਬਾਰੇ ਸੀ।

Her larger point was continuity.

ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਇਸ ਲਈ ਲੰਮੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਤੱਕ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਤੋਂ ਦੂਰ ਨਾ ਰਹੋ ਕਿ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਗੰਭੀਰ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਈ ਲਈ ਸਮਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੱਢ ਸਕਦੇ।

Don't disappear from the language for long periods just because you can't fit in a serious study session.

ਜੇ ਲੋੜ ਹੋਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਸਰਗਰਮੀ ਬਦਲ ਲਵੋ।

Change the activity if necessary.

ਕੁਝ ਪੜ੍ਹੋ।

Read something.

ਕੁਝ ਸੁਣੋ।

Listen.

ਮਨ ਹੀ ਮਨ ਥੋੜ੍ਹੀ ਗੱਲਬਾਤ ਕਰੋ।

Think through a little monologue.

ਕੋਈ ਸ਼ਬਦਕੋਸ਼ ਫਰੋਲੋ।

Look through a dictionary.

ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਨਾਲ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਤਾ ਜਿਉਂਦਾ ਰੱਖੋ।

Keep the relationship with the language alive.

ਬੈਨ: ਕੀ ਉਹ ਸੱਚਮੁੱਚ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨਾਲ ਗੱਲ ਕਰਦੇ ਸਨ?

Ben: Did she really talk to herself?

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਉਹ ਉਸ ਅਭਿਆਸ ਦੀ ਜ਼ੋਰਦਾਰ ਸਿਫ਼ਾਰਸ਼ ਕਰਦੇ ਸਨ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਇਕਾਲਾਪ ਜਾਂ ਅੰਦਰੂਨੀ ਇਕਾਲਾਪ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਸਨ।

Clara: She strongly recommended what she called monologues or inner monologues.

She thought learners should practise constructing thoughts in the language even when there was nobody around to talk to.

ਇਹ ਇੱਕ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਵਿਹਾਰਕ ਕਾਰਨ ਕਰਕੇ ਲਾਭਦਾਇਕ ਹੈ।

That's useful for a very practical reason.

ਗੱਲਬਾਤ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਹਰ ਵਾਕ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਸਮਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ।

Conversation doesn't give you unlimited time to build every sentence.

ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਅਭਿਆਸ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਪਤਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕੀ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੇ ਹੋ ਅਤੇ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਅਟਕਦੇ ਹੋ।

Practising on your own lets you notice what you can express and where you get stuck.

Ben: So rather than waiting for a real conversation to discover that I have absolutely no idea how to explain what I did yesterday.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਬਿਲਕੁਲ।

Clara: Precisely.

ਤੁਸੀਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਰਸੋਈ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਅਤ ਢੰਗ ਨਾਲ ਇਸ ਸਮੱਸਿਆ ਦਾ ਪਤਾ ਲਗਾ ਸਕਦੇ ਹੋ।

You can discover that problem safely in your kitchen.

ਅਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਲੋੜੀਂਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਜਾਂ ਵਾਕੰਸ਼ ਲੱਭ ਸਕਦੇ ਹੋ।

And then you can find the missing language.

ਬੈਨ: ਇਸ ਸਭ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਸਾਦੀ ਜਿਹੀ ਖਿੱਚ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੋਈ ਦਿਖਾਵਾ ਨਹੀਂ।

Ben: There's something appealingly unglamorous about all this.

ਇੱਕ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਪੜ੍ਹੋ।

Read a book.

ਜਦੋਂ ਮਦਦ ਮਿਲੇ, ਸ਼ਬਦਕੋਸ਼ ਵਰਤੋ।

Use a dictionary when it helps.

ਰੇਡੀਓ ਸੁਣੋ।

Listen to the radio.

ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨਾਲ ਗੱਲ ਕਰੋ।

Talk to yourself.

ਅੱਗੇ ਵਧਦੇ ਰਹੋ।

Keep going.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਇਹੀ ਇੱਕ ਕਾਰਨ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਲੋਮਬ ਇੰਨੇ ਪਸੰਦ ਹਨ।

Clara: That's one of the reasons I like Lomb so much.

ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀਆਂ ਅਸਾਧਾਰਣ ਸਨ, ਪਰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਲਾਹ ਆਮ ਤੌਰ ’ਤੇ ਅਸਾਧਾਰਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ।

Her achievements were extraordinary, but her advice usually wasn't.

She didn't give learners a secret technique that would make a language effortless.

ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਮੇਂ, ਉਤਸੁਕਤਾ, ਲਗਨ ਅਤੇ ਅਧੂਰੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਨਾਲ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਤਿਆਰੀ ਉੱਤੇ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ।

She emphasized time, curiosity, persistence and willingness to work with incomplete knowledge.

ਬੈਨ: ਅਤੇ ਕਦੇ-ਕਦੇ ਥੋੜ੍ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਦਿਖਾਈ ਦੇਣ ਲਈ ਵੀ ਤਿਆਰ ਰਹਿਣਾ।

Ben: And willingness to look slightly foolish sometimes.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਬਿਲਕੁਲ।

Clara: Absolutely.

ਪਰ ਇੱਕ ਹੋਰ ਗੱਲ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਬਾਰੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਖ਼ਿਆਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਸਾਵਧਾਨ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।

But there's one more thing I think we should be careful about.

It's tempting to turn Lomb's life into proof that anybody can learn sixteen languages if they just use the right method.

ਪਰ ਅਸਲ ਸਬਕ ਇਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।

That's not really the lesson.

ਬੈਨ: ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹ ਸਪੱਸ਼ਟ ਤੌਰ ’ਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਅਸਾਧਾਰਣ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਸਨ।

Ben: Because she was clearly an unusual person.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਅਸਾਧਾਰਣ।

Clara: Very unusual.

She was extraordinarily persistent, intellectually curious and spent decades working professionally with languages.

ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਿਖਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇੱਕ ਅਸਾਧਾਰਣ ਬਾਲਗ ਸਿੱਖਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਨੇ ਕੀ ਹਾਸਲ ਕੀਤਾ।

Her life demonstrates what one remarkable adult learner achieved.

ਇਹ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੱਸਦਾ ਕਿ ਹਰ ਕੋਈ ਉਸੇ ਮੰਜ਼ਿਲ ਤੱਕ ਪਹੁੰਚੇਗਾ।

It doesn't tell us that everyone will reach the same destination.

What it does challenge is the idea that serious language learning belongs only to people who were obviously gifted at it from childhood.

ਬੈਨ: ਖ਼ਾਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਇਸ ਲਈ ਕਿ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਵੱਡਾ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਬਾਲਗ ਹੋਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਬਣਾਉਣਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕੀਤਾ ਸੀ।

Ben: Especially because she started building much of this as an adult.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਬਿਲਕੁਲ।

Clara: Exactly.

ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਕਈ ਦਹਾਕਿਆਂ ਤੱਕ ਸਿੱਖਦੇ ਰਹੇ।

And she continued learning for decades.

ਸ਼ਾਇਦ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਦਾ ਇਹੀ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਲਈ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਹੌਸਲਾ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ।

That may be the part of her story I find most encouraging.

She didn't treat language learning as a phase you complete.

ਇਹ ਉਹ ਕੰਮ ਰਿਹਾ ਜੋ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਾਰੀ ਉਮਰ ਕੀਤਾ।

It remained something she did throughout her life.

Ben: If Kató Lomb were sitting here with us, what do you think she'd tell a learner who's been studying for six months and feels hopelessly slow?

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਜ਼ਾਹਿਰ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਕਹਿਣਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਵੱਸ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਕੀ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ।

Clara: I obviously can't speak for her.

ਪਰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਲਿਖਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਆਧਾਰ ’ਤੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਕੁਝ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਵਿਹਾਰਕ ਸਵਾਲ ਪੁੱਛਦੇ।

But based on her writing, I suspect she'd ask some very practical questions.

ਕੀ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਨਾਲ ਕਾਫ਼ੀ ਸਮਾਂ ਬਿਤਾ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ?

Are you spending enough time with the language?

ਕੀ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਅਜਿਹੀਆਂ ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਕੰਮ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਸੱਚਮੁੱਚ ਦਿਲਚਸਪੀ ਹੈ?

Are you working with things that genuinely interest you?

ਕੀ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਤੋਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਜਲਦੀ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਸਮਝ ਲੈਣ ਦੀ ਉਮੀਦ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ?

Are you expecting yourself to understand everything too soon?

ਅਤੇ ਕੀ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਗਲਤੀਆਂ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਇੰਨਾ ਡਰਦੇ ਹੋ ਕਿ ਉਸੇ ਅਭਿਆਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਚ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਲੋੜ ਹੈ?

And are you so afraid of making mistakes that you're avoiding the very practice you need?

ਬੈਨ: ਇਹ ਤਾਂ ਕਾਫ਼ੀ ਅਸਹਿਜ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਸਵਾਲ-ਸੂਚੀ ਹੈ।

Ben: That's a rather uncomfortable checklist.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਲਾਭਦਾਇਕ ਸੂਚੀਆਂ ਅਕਸਰ ਅਜਿਹੀਆਂ ਹੀ ਹੁੰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।

Clara: The useful ones often are.

Ben: So how would you summarize her approach without turning it into another internet recipe for fluency?

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਉਤਸੁਕ ਰਹੋ।

Clara: Stay curious.

ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਨਾਲ ਸੱਚਮੁੱਚ ਸਮਾਂ ਬਿਤਾਓ।

Spend real time with the language.

ਉਹ ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ ਪੜ੍ਹੋ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਅਸਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਮਝਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੇ ਹੋ।

Read things you actually want to understand.

ਸੰਦਰਭ ਵਰਤੋ, ਪਰ ਲੋੜ ਪੈਣ ’ਤੇ ਸ਼ਬਦਕੋਸ਼ਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਆਖਿਆਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਦਦ ਵੀ ਲਵੋ।

Use context, but use dictionaries and explanations when you need them.

ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵੱਲ ਨਿਯਮਿਤ ਤੌਰ ’ਤੇ ਮੁੜਦੇ ਰਹੋ।

Return to the language regularly.

ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਹੀ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਕਰਨ ਤੱਕ ਉਡੀਕਣ ਦੀ ਬਜਾਏ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਬੋਲਣ ਅਤੇ ਲਿਖਣ ਦਾ ਅਭਿਆਸ ਕਰੋ।

Practise producing it instead of waiting until you feel perfect.

ਅਤੇ ਅਧੂਰੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ ਬੇਕਾਰ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਨਾ ਸਮਝੋ।

And don't confuse imperfect language with useless language.

ਬੈਨ: ਇਹ “ਇੱਕ ਅਜੀਬ ਨੁਸਖ਼ੇ ਨਾਲ ਬਹੁਭਾਸ਼ੀ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਨੇ ਸੋਲਾਂ ਭਾਸ਼ਾਵਾਂ ਸਿੱਖ ਲਈਆਂ” ਨਾਲੋਂ ਕਾਫ਼ੀ ਬਿਹਤਰ ਹੈ।

Ben: That's considerably better than "polyglot learns sixteen languages with one weird trick."

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਕਿਤੇ ਬਿਹਤਰ।

Clara: Much better.

ਅਤੇ ਖ਼ੁਦ ਉਸ ਸ਼ਖ਼ਸੀਅਤ ਦੇ ਵੀ ਕਿਤੇ ਨੇੜੇ।

And much closer to the woman herself.

ਬੈਨ: ਕਲਾਰਾ, ਹੁਣ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਆ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ੰਸਕ ਕਿਉਂ ਹੋ।

Ben: Clara, I can see why you're a fan.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਮੈਂ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਚੇਤਾਵਨੀ ਦੇ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਸੀ।

Clara: I warned you at the beginning.

Ben: Kató Lomb was a chemist, translator, interpreter and lifelong language learner. But perhaps her most useful legacy is much simpler.

ਭਾਸ਼ਾਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਭਾ ਜਾਂ ਸੰਪੂਰਨਤਾ ਨਾਲ ਹੋਣੀ ਲਾਜ਼ਮੀ ਨਹੀਂ।

Languages don't have to begin with talent or perfection.

ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤ ਉਤਸੁਕਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਵਧਦੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਦੀ ਤਿਆਰੀ ਨਾਲ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ।

They can begin with curiosity and the willingness to keep going.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਮੇਰੇ ਖ਼ਿਆਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਪਸੰਦ ਆਉਂਦੀ।

Clara: I think she would have liked that.

ਬੈਨ: ਕਲਾਰਾ, ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਧੰਨਵਾਦ।

Ben: Clara, thank you.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਮੈਨੂੰ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੋਈ।

Clara: My pleasure.
