Ben: Welcome back to Vocafy Unpacked. I'm your host, Ben, here again with Vocafy's language-learning expert, Clara.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਸਤ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ, ਬੈਨ। ਮੁੜ ਆ ਕੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।

Clara: Hi Ben. Great to be back.

ਬੈਨ: ਕਲਾਰਾ, ਅੱਜ ਮੈਂ ਇੱਕ ਅਜਿਹੀ ਗੱਲ ਕਰਨੀ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਜਿਸ ਤੋਂ ਹਰ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਸਿੱਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਜਾਣੂ ਹੈ।

Ben: Clara, today I want to talk about something every language learner knows.

You learn a bunch of new words. They feel familiar. Maybe you even test yourself and get them right.

Then a week later, somebody uses one of those words and you think, “I know this... I definitely learned this... what does it mean?”

ਕੀ ਹੋਇਆ?

What happened?

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਆਮ ਗੱਲ ਹੋਈ: ਤੁਸੀਂ ਭੁੱਲ ਗਏ।

Clara: Something completely normal: you forgot.

ਬੈਨ: ਇਹ ਤਾਂ ਬੜਾ ਸਿੱਧਾ, ਪਰ ਹੌਸਲਾ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਜਵਾਬ ਹੈ।

Ben: That's reassuringly direct.

Clara: But it's important, because learners often treat forgetting as evidence that they're bad at languages.

Usually it isn't. Memory changes over time. If we encounter something once and then never use or retrieve it again, our ability to remember it often becomes weaker.

ਬੈਨ: ਕੀ ਇਹੀ ਮਸ਼ਹੂਰ “ਭੁੱਲਣ-ਵਕਰ” ਹੈ?

Ben: Is that the famous “forgetting curve”?

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਇਸ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਦੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤ ਉੱਥੋਂ ਹੀ ਹੋਈ ਸੀ।

Clara: That's where the idea comes from.

In the nineteenth century, the psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus carried out some of the earliest systematic experiments on memory. He learned lists of meaningless syllables himself and measured how difficult they were to relearn after different amounts of time.

His results showed a pattern that has become famous: forgetting was relatively rapid after learning, then slowed over time.

ਬੈਨ: ਯਾਨੀ ਉਹ ਵਕਰ ਜੋ ਅਸੀਂ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਵੇਖਦੇ ਹਾਂ—ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਤੇਜ਼ ਗਿਰਾਵਟ ਅਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਲਗਭਗ ਸਮਤਲ ਲਕੀਰ।

Ben: So that curve we see everywhere — the dramatic drop followed by a flatter line.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਬਿਲਕੁਲ। ਪਰ ਇੱਥੇ ਇੱਕ ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਨ ਚੇਤਾਵਨੀ ਹੈ।

Clara: Exactly. But there's an important warning.

There isn't one universal forgetting curve that tells us exactly how much every person will forget after one hour, one day or one week.

Ebbinghaus studied one person — himself — using very artificial material. Real vocabulary learning depends on many things: how well you learned the word in the first place, how meaningful it is to you, how often you encounter it, what you already know, and what you're trying to remember.

ਬੈਨ: ਤਾਂ ਲਾਭਦਾਇਕ ਸਬਕ ਇਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ਕਿ “ਠੀਕ ਚੌਵੀ ਘੰਟਿਆਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਯਾਦਦਾਸ਼ਤ ਤੀਹ ਫ਼ੀਸਦੀ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਵੇਗੀ।”

Ben: So the useful lesson isn't “after exactly twenty-four hours, your memory will be at thirty percent.”

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਨਹੀਂ।

Clara: Definitely not.

The useful lesson is much simpler: one encounter is usually not enough, and the timing of later encounters matters.

ਬੈਨ: ਅਤੇ ਇੱਥੋਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਵਕਫ਼ਿਆਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਦੁਹਰਾਈ ਤੱਕ ਪਹੁੰਚਦੇ ਹਾਂ।

Ben: Which brings us to spaced repetition.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਬਿਲਕੁਲ।

Clara: Right.

Imagine you want to learn twenty new words. You could repeat each one ten times in a single evening.

ਇਸ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਬਹੁਤ ਜਾਣੇ-ਪਛਾਣੇ ਲੱਗ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ।

That might make them feel very familiar.

ਬੈਨ: ਅਤੇ ਠੀਕ ਉਸੇ ਵੇਲੇ ਮੈਂ ਬੜੇ ਭਰੋਸੇ ਨਾਲ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਕਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਇਹ ਸਿੱਖ ਲਏ ਹਨ।

Ben: Which is exactly when I confidently tell myself I've learned them.

Clara: And that's the trap. Familiarity right now isn't necessarily the same as being able to retrieve something days or weeks later.

ਇਹ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਦੁਹਰਾਈਆਂ ਇੱਕੋ ਵਾਰ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਥਾਂ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਵੰਡ ਸਕਦੇ ਹੋ।

Instead of doing all those repetitions at once, you can spread them across time.

You meet the word today. Return to it later. Then again after a longer interval. If it continues to be easy to remember, the gaps between reviews can become longer.

ਇਹੀ ਵਕਫ਼ਿਆਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਦੁਹਰਾਈ ਦਾ ਬੁਨਿਆਦੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਹੈ।

That's the basic idea behind spaced repetition.

ਬੈਨ: ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਕਿਸੇ ਐਪ ਦੀ ਚਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ?

Ben: And this isn't just an app trick?

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਨਹੀਂ। ਵਕਫ਼ਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਯਾਦਦਾਸ਼ਤ ਬਾਰੇ ਖੋਜ ਦੇ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਣਿਤ ਨਤੀਜਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ।

Clara: No. The spacing effect is one of the most established findings in memory research.

Across many kinds of learning, information studied across separate sessions tends to be retained better over the long term than the same material studied repeatedly in one concentrated session.

ਦੂਜੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਸਿੱਖਣ ਬਾਰੇ ਕੀਤੀ ਖੋਜ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੀ ਇਹੀ ਆਮ ਰੁਝਾਨ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੈ।

Research specifically on second-language learning has found the same general pattern.

Ben: But why do we need an algorithm for that? Couldn't I just review everything every few days?

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਕਰ ਸਕਦੇ ਹੋ। ਅਤੇ ਦਸ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਲਈ ਇਹ ਢੰਗ ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਵਧੀਆ ਕੰਮ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।

Clara: You could. And with ten words, that might work perfectly well.

The problem appears when you have fifty words, then five hundred, then several thousand.

Some are difficult. Some are easy. Some you've just learned. Others haven't troubled you for months.

ਸਭ ਦਾ ਇੱਕੋ ਜਿੰਨਾ ਮੁੜ ਅਭਿਆਸ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਮਾਂ ਬਰਬਾਦ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ।

Reviewing all of them equally would waste a lot of time.

ਬੈਨ: ਤਾਂ ਇੱਥੇ SRS—ਯਾਨੀ Spaced Repetition System—ਕੰਮ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

Ben: So that's where an SRS — a Spaced Repetition System — comes in.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਬਿਲਕੁਲ।

Clara: Exactly.

SRS ਇਹ ਤੈਅ ਕਰਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਦਦ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਕਿਹੜੀ ਸਮੱਗਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਮੁੜ ਅਭਿਆਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਿਆਉਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਲਗਭਗ ਕਦੋਂ।

An SRS helps decide what should come back into practice and roughly when.

Items you're struggling with can return sooner. Items you keep remembering successfully can usually wait longer.

The point isn't to predict the exact second you're going to forget something. Human memory isn't that predictable.

The goal is much more practical: use your limited practice time where another retrieval is likely to be useful.

ਬੈਨ: ਤੁਸੀਂ ਹੁਣੇ “ਯਾਦ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਮੁੜ ਲਿਆਉਣਾ” ਕਿਹਾ। ਕੀ ਇਹ ਦੁਹਰਾਈ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਖਰਾ ਹੈ?

Ben: You just used the word “retrieval.” Is that different from repetition?

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਬਹੁਤ ਵੱਖਰਾ—ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਨ ਹਿੱਸਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ।

Clara: Very different — and this is one of the most important parts.

ਮੰਨ ਲਓ ਮੈਂ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਕਾਰਡ ਦਿਖਾਉਂਦੀ ਹਾਂ, ਜਿਸ ਉੱਤੇ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੈ:

Suppose I show you a card that says:

“ephemeral—ਬਹੁਤ ਥੋੜ੍ਹੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਲਈ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ।”

“ephemeral — lasting for a very short time.”

ਤੁਸੀਂ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਪੰਜ ਵਾਰ ਪੜ੍ਹਦੇ ਹੋ।

You read it five times.

ਇਹ ਦੁਹਰਾਈ ਹੈ।

That's repetition.

But if I show you “ephemeral” and ask you to remember the meaning before revealing the answer, you're doing retrieval practice.

ਤੁਸੀਂ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਯਾਦ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਵਾਪਸ ਲਿਆਉਣ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ।

You're trying to bring the information back from memory.

ਬੈਨ: ਤਾਂ ਕੁਝ ਸਕਿੰਟ ਜਵਾਬ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਜੱਦੋ-ਜਹਿਦ ਕਰਨਾ ਲਾਜ਼ਮੀ ਤੌਰ ’ਤੇ ਮਾੜੀ ਗੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।

Ben: So struggling for a few seconds isn't necessarily a bad thing.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਬਿਲਕੁਲ।

Clara: Exactly.

Successful retrieval is itself a learning event. A large body of research shows that practising retrieval can improve later memory more than simply seeing the information again.

So a useful review system isn't just asking, “Have you looked at this word recently?”

ਉਹ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਅਸਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਯਾਦ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਮੁੜ ਲਿਆਉਣ ਦੇ ਮੌਕੇ ਦਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।

It's giving you opportunities to actually retrieve what you know.

Ben: And presumably one kind of retrieval doesn't prove that I completely know a word.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਸਿੱਖਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਤੌਰ ’ਤੇ ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਨ ਹੈ।

Clara: That's especially important in language learning.

ਸੋਚੋ ਕਿ ਕਿਸੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ “ਜਾਣਨ” ਦਾ ਕੀ ਮਤਲਬ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

Think about what it means to “know” a word.

ਪੜ੍ਹਦੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣ ਸਕਦੇ ਹੋ, ਪਰ ਖੁਦ ਉਸਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਯੋਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੇ।

You might recognise it while reading but be unable to produce it yourself.

ਉਸਦਾ ਲਿਖਤੀ ਰੂਪ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਉਸਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਯਾਦ ਆ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਬੋਲਚਾਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੇ।

You might remember its meaning when you see the written form but fail to recognise it in speech.

Or you might understand it perfectly and still not know how to use it naturally in a sentence.

ਬੈਨ: ਤਾਂ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਵਲੀ ਦਾ ਗਿਆਨ ਅਸਲ ਵਿੱਚ “ਜਾਣਦੇ ਹੋ ਜਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦੇ” ਵਾਲਾ ਕੋਈ ਸਧਾਰਣ ਸਵਿੱਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।

Ben: So vocabulary knowledge isn't really a simple known-or-not-known switch.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਬਿਲਕੁਲ।

Clara: Exactly.

ਇਸੇ ਲਈ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਅਭਿਆਸ ਲਾਭਦਾਇਕ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।

That's why varied practice can be useful.

You can recall a meaning, choose between alternatives, complete a sentence, write the word yourself, listen for it, or meet it again inside meaningful content.

ਇਹ ਗਤੀਵਿਧੀਆਂ ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਯਾਦਦਾਸ਼ਤ ਨੂੰ ਥੋੜ੍ਹੇ ਵੱਖਰੇ ਢੰਗਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਾਉਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।

These activities ask slightly different things of your memory.

Ben: Which sounds quite different from the classic flashcard experience of seeing the same isolated pair again and again.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਵੱਖਰਾ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।

Clara: It can be.

ਫਲੈਸ਼ਕਾਰਡ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਮੱਸਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ। ਉਹ ਇੱਕ ਲਾਭਦਾਇਕ ਸਾਧਨ ਹਨ।

Flashcards themselves aren't the problem. They're a useful tool.

But a word becomes much richer when you also know how it sounds, where you've seen it, what kind of sentence it appears in, and how it connects to something meaningful.

ਮੰਨ ਲਓ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਇੱਕ ਸ਼ਾਨਦਾਰ ਉਲਕਾ-ਵਰਖਾ ਬਾਰੇ ਲੇਖ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ “ephemeral” ਸ਼ਬਦ ਸੰਭਾਲਿਆ ਸੀ।

Imagine you saved the word “ephemeral” from an article about a spectacular meteor shower.

ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਇਹ ਵੇਖਣ ਦੀ ਥਾਂ:

Later, instead of seeing only:

“ephemeral = ਥੋੜ੍ਹੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਤੱਕ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ”

“ephemeral = short-lived”

ਤੁਸੀਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਵਾਕ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਵੀ ਮੁੜ ਜੋੜ ਸਕਦੇ ਹੋ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਵਾਰ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਹਮਣਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ।

you can also reconnect it with the sentence and idea where you first encountered it.

ਬੈਨ: ਤਾਂ ਸੰਦਰਭ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਟਿਕਣ ਲਈ ਕੋਈ ਥਾਂ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

Ben: So context gives the word somewhere to live.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਹਿਣ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਬਹੁਤ ਵਧੀਆ ਢੰਗ ਹੈ।

Clara: That's a nice way to put it.

It doesn't mean that adding more information automatically makes every memory stronger. But learning vocabulary involves more than storing a translation. You're gradually building knowledge about the word's form, sound, meaning and use.

Meeting and retrieving it in different useful ways can strengthen those connections.

ਬੈਨ: ਇਹ Vocafy ਵਿੱਚ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ?

Ben: How does that fit into Vocafy?

ਕਲਾਰਾ: Vocafy ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਸੰਭਾਲੀ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਵਲੀ ਨੂੰ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਸਿੱਖਣ ਦੇ ਸੰਦਰਭ ਅਤੇ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਨਾਲ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ।

Clara: Vocafy keeps the vocabulary you save connected with your learning context and history.

So a word or phrase you discover while reading, watching something or working with other content doesn't have to disappear when that activity ends.

You can return to saved vocabulary through review and practise it in different ways.

Ben: So spaced review becomes part of a bigger system rather than a separate deck of cards.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਬਿਲਕੁਲ।

Clara: Exactly.

The system can help bring vocabulary back over time, while different activities let you work with that vocabulary through recall, listening, writing, sentence completion and other forms of practice.

And because saved words can keep their context, review doesn't have to mean repeatedly memorising disconnected word pairs.

ਬੈਨ: ਜਦੋਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਚੀਜ਼ ਆਸਾਨੀ ਨਾਲ ਯਾਦ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਕੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ?

Ben: What happens when I remember something easily?

Clara: In a spaced system, it generally makes sense for that item to appear less frequently.

Why spend tomorrow reviewing something that is already easy when another word keeps disappearing from memory?

ਜਿਵੇਂ-ਜਿਵੇਂ ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਯਾਦ ਹੋਰ ਪੱਕੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਵਕਫ਼ਾ ਵਧਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।

As your memory becomes more reliable, the interval can grow.

ਬੈਨ: ਅਤੇ ਜੇ ਮੈਂ ਭੁੱਲ ਜਾਵਾਂ?

Ben: And if I forget?

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਤਾਂ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਿੱਖਣ ਬਾਰੇ ਇੱਕ ਲਾਭਦਾਇਕ ਗੱਲ ਪਤਾ ਲੱਗ ਗਈ।

Clara: Then you've learned something useful about your learning.

ਸ਼ਾਇਦ ਉਸ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਹੋਰ ਧਿਆਨ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਲਈ ਉਹ ਛੇਤੀ ਮੁੜ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਆ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।

The word probably needs more attention, so it can return sooner.

Forgetting during practice isn't a disaster. In fact, one reason we practise is to discover weaknesses while the stakes are low.

ਬੈਨ: ਲਾਲ ਰੰਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਦਿਖਦੇ “ਗਲਤ” ਜਵਾਬ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖਣ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਕਿਤੇ ਵਧੀਆ ਨਜ਼ਰੀਆ ਹੈ।

Ben: That's a much nicer way of looking at the red “wrong” answer.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਹੈ।

Clara: It is.

ਮੁੜ ਅਭਿਆਸ ਕੋਈ ਇਮਤਿਹਾਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਸਿੱਖਣ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਕਿਰਿਆ ਦਾ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਹੈ।

A review isn't an exam. It's part of the learning process.

ਬੈਨ: ਪਰ ਇੱਕ ਸਮੱਸਿਆ ਅਜੇ ਵੀ ਹੈ।

Ben: There's still one problem, though.

I've used spaced-repetition apps before. They're wonderful for a few days, and then suddenly I have a mountain of reviews waiting for me.

At that point, the scientifically optimal thing seems to be closing the app and pretending I never installed it.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਅਤੇ ਇੱਥੇ ਹੀ ਸਿੱਖਣ ਦਾ ਵਿਗਿਆਨ ਅਸਲ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।

Clara: And that's where learning science meets real life.

ਸਿਧਾਂਤਕ ਤੌਰ ’ਤੇ ਕੁਸ਼ਲ ਸਮਾਂ-ਸਾਰਣੀ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਲਾਭ ਨਹੀਂ, ਜੇ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਉਸਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਬੰਦ ਕਰ ਦਿਓ।

A theoretically efficient schedule isn't very useful if you stop using it.

The number of new items you add matters. The amount of review you can realistically sustain matters. And missing a day doesn't mean you've ruined the system.

ਬੈਨ: ਤਾਂ ਸਾਨੂੰ “ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਲਈ ਹਰ ਸਵੇਰ ਠੀਕ ਦਸ ਮਿੰਟ” ਵਾਲੇ ਮਸ਼ਹੂਰ ਨਿਯਮ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ?

Ben: So we don't need the famous “exactly ten minutes every morning forever” rule?

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਕੋਈ ਜਾਦੂਈ ਅੰਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।

Clara: No magic number.

The broader principle is that distributed practice is usually better for long-term retention than cramming everything into one session.

A short session that you can realistically return to is often more useful than an enormous study session followed by a week of nothing.

ਪਰ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵਧੀਆ ਰੁਟੀਨ ਉਹ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਅਸਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਾਰੀ ਰੱਖ ਸਕਦੇ ਹੋ।

But the best routine is one you can actually maintain.

Ben: And presumably we shouldn't spend our entire language-learning life doing reviews either.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਨਹੀਂ।

Clara: Definitely not.

ਸ਼ਬਦਾਵਲੀ ਯਾਦ ਰੱਖਣਾ ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਨ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਸਿੱਖਣਾ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਵਲੀ ਰੱਟਣ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਕਿਤੇ ਵੱਡੀ ਗੱਲ ਹੈ।

Remembering vocabulary is important, but language learning is bigger than memorising vocabulary.

ਪੜ੍ਹੋ। ਸੁਣੋ। ਗੱਲਬਾਤ ਕਰੋ। ਲਿਖੋ। ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦੇ ਨਵੇਂ ਰੂਪਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਰੂਬਰੂ ਹੋਵੋ।

Read. Listen. Have conversations. Write things. Encounter new language.

Spaced repetition is useful because it helps important words stay available while you do those other things.

ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਕਰਨੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਸਦੀ ਥਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੈਣੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ।

It should support language use, not replace it.

ਬੈਨ: ਤਾਂ ਜੇ ਅਸੀਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਵਧਾ-ਚੜ੍ਹਾ ਕੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਦਾਅਵੇ ਪਾਸੇ ਰੱਖ ਦੇਈਏ, ਅਸਲ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕੀ ਹੈ?

Ben: So if we strip away all the hype, what's the real idea?

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਇਹ ਉਮੀਦ ਨਾ ਰੱਖੋ ਕਿ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਇੱਕ ਵਾਰ ਸਾਹਮਣਾ ਹੋਣ ਨਾਲ ਕੋਈ ਸਥਾਈ ਯਾਦ ਬਣ ਜਾਵੇਗੀ।

Clara: Don't expect one exposure to create a permanent memory.

Return to important things over time. Try to retrieve them instead of simply rereading them. Give difficult items more attention and easy ones increasingly more space.

And whenever possible, keep vocabulary connected to the language where it actually means something.

ਬੈਨ: ਤਾਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਅਸਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਭੁੱਲਣ ਨੂੰ ਹਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹੇ।

Ben: So we're not really defeating forgetting.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਨਹੀਂ। ਭੁੱਲਣਾ ਯਾਦਦਾਸ਼ਤ ਦਾ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਹੈ।

Clara: No. Forgetting is part of memory.

ਅਸੀਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਅਭਿਆਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਹਕੀਕਤ ਮੁਤਾਬਕ ਢਾਲ ਰਹੇ ਹਾਂ।

We're designing practice around it.

Ben: I think that's actually more interesting than “hack your brain and never forget anything.”

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਅਤੇ ਕਿਤੇ ਵੱਧ ਹਕੀਕਤੀ ਵੀ।

Clara: Much more realistic too.

ਬੈਨ: ਕਲਾਰਾ, ਸਾਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਵਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਧੰਨਵਾਦ ਕਿ ਅਸੀਂ ਕਿਉਂ ਭੁੱਲਦੇ ਹਾਂ।

Ben: Clara, thanks for helping us remember why we forget.

ਕਲਾਰਾ: ਮੈਨੂੰ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੋਈ।

Clara: My pleasure.

Ben: And to everyone listening: if there's a word you learned recently and can still remember right now, maybe today is a good time to try recalling it again — before looking at the answer.
