José Martí was a Cuban poet, journalist and thinker who lived many years in exile, most of them in New York, and gave his life to Cuba's independence from Spain; he died in battle in 1895. In 1889 he wrote and published La Edad de Oro, a monthly magazine for the children of the Americas, and his poems and essays made him one of the great writers of the Spanish language.
