Grammar devices Roots, patterns and word doubling

Word doubling

What does repeating a word or part of it add?

reduplication

Betydelse

Repeating a word or part of it can add meaning, such as extra strength or repeated action. It may also show that something is shared out or happens now and then, or it may create a new word. Some languages use doubling as a regular grammar rule, while others use it only in limited expressions or not as a grammar device at all. Focus and emphasis can highlight a word without repeating it; Word doubling is about the repeated form itself.

Så känner du igen det

Look for a whole word or part of a word being copied in a familiar pattern that adds a meaning, rather than being repeated by accident.

Engelska

English has some fixed doubled words, such as no-no, and some forms with a changed sound, such as tick-tock. Speakers also repeat words in informal speech for emphasis or to mean the real or usual kind of something. Doubling is not the normal way to mark plural nouns or verb tense.

Wearing shoes on the sofa is a no-no.

No-no is an informal word for something people should not do.

The clock went tick-tock all night.

The vowel changes in a repeated sound pattern that imitates a clock.

This bag is very, very heavy.

This is spoken repetition for emphasis, not a required grammar form.

Vanlig fallgrop

Learners whose language uses doubling as a regular grammar rule may repeat English nouns or verbs where plural endings or time expressions are needed. Not every word can be doubled naturally.
