Dr. Seward went to Renfield’s room. He found Renfield on the floor. There was a lot of blood. Renfield was very hurt. His face was bruised and his back was broken. Renfield could not move his right arm or his right leg. He was paralysed (unable to move part of the body). Dr. Seward called for Van Helsing.
Van Helsing arrived quickly. He looked at Renfield’s head. He said Renfield had a very bad injury. They needed to do an operation (when a doctor cuts the body to fix it). Van Helsing wanted to fix Renfield’s head. He hoped Renfield could speak before he died. Arthur Holmwood and Quincey Morris came to help.
The room was very quiet. Everyone was nervous. Van Helsing began the operation on Renfield's head. After a few minutes, Renfield opened his eyes. He looked at the doctors. He asked for some water and brandy. Then he began to tell a story. He said it was not a dream. It was real.
Renfield told them about Count Dracula. He said the Count came to his window in the mist. The Count promised Renfield many things. He promised Renfield flies and moths. He promised thousands of rats. The Count said Renfield could have many lives if he served him. Renfield opened the window and let the Count in.
But Renfield noticed something. He saw Mina Harker today. She looked very pale and tired. Renfield realised the Count was taking Mina’s life. This made Renfield very angry. When the Count came back that night, Renfield tried to stop him. Renfield was strong, but the Count was stronger. The Count threw Renfield onto the floor. That is how Renfield was hurt.
Van Helsing stood up. He was very worried. He said they must go to the Harkers' room immediately. The men took their bags and ran to the door. Van Helsing tried to open the door, but it was locked. The men pushed the door together. The door broke open and they fell into the room.
The room was bright with moonlight. Jonathan Harker was in a deep sleep on the bed. Mina Harker was kneeling on the bed. A tall, thin man in black stood next to her. It was Count Dracula. He held Mina’s hands tightly. He forced Mina’s face against an open wound on his chest. There was blood on her white nightdress.
Dracula looked at the men. His eyes were red and angry. He looked like a wild animal. Van Helsing held up a Sacred Wafer (a special piece of bread used in church). The other men held up their crucifixes (a cross with a figure of Jesus on it). The Count was afraid of these holy things. He turned into a dark mist and went under the door.
Mina Harker screamed. It was a loud and sad scream. She was very afraid. Her face was pale and there was blood on her mouth. She cried because she felt dirty. Van Helsing woke Jonathan Harker with cold water. Jonathan was confused. When he saw the blood, he began to cry. He asked God to help them.
Mina told Jonathan he must stay with her. She was afraid the Count would hurt him. Van Helsing tried to calm them. He said the Count could not come near them because of the crucifixes. But Mina felt terrible. She said she could not kiss her husband anymore. She felt like an enemy to him.
Arthur Holmwood and Quincey Morris looked for the Count. They went to the study. They found that the Count destroyed all the papers. He also burned Dr. Seward’s voice recordings (voices saved on a machine). But Dr. Seward was happy because he had another copy in a safe. Quincey Morris said he saw a bat fly away from the house.
Mina Harker told them what happened. She took medicine to sleep, but she had bad dreams. She saw a mist in the room. Then the Count appeared. He told her to be quiet. He said he would kill Jonathan if she made a sound. He drank her blood from her neck. Then he forced her to drink his blood from his chest.
The Count said Mina was now "part of him." He said she must come when he called her. This was his punishment because she helped the other men. As Mina finished her story, the sun began to rise. Jonathan Harker looked at his wife. His face was very gray. His hair was now white because he was so sad. The house was full of sorrow.
